Easy as Pie, Turnips, Bread, Babyfood…

『そんなの簡単！』をいろんな言葉で表現

I suddenly got to thinking; the expression, “that’s so easy” can be described as “Piece of Cake” or “Easy as Pie” in English. I assume that these expressions came from “as easy as eating a piece of cake or pie” but! I became a bit curious; <What would people say, in a country without a culture of eating cakes and pies? Or, they are actually very expensive that it is NOT easy to eat cakes and pies…?>

ふと思ったんです。「そんなの簡単！」という表現、英語ですと”Piece of Cake” や、”Easy as Pie” と、ケーキやパイが登場してきますが、まぁ「ケーキやパイを食べるくらい簡単」という意味だと思うのですが、『もし、ケーキやパイのない文化の国だったら、なんて表現するのかなぁ』と興味が湧いてしまったんです。

So, I did some research. All kinds of different expressions to say “that’s so easy” in different languages. Turned out, they are quite interesting, revealing characteristics of different cultures and different countries. Why don’t we take a look together!

と言うことで、調べてみましたよ～。いろんな言語で表現する「そんなの簡単！」なんだかお国柄がでていてなかなか面白いですので、みなさまにもご紹介します。

I guess it’s same in French as “Gâteau” = cake. Come to think of it, Marie Antoinette supposedly said, “Let them eat a cake,” right?　フランス語も英語と同じ、Gateau, ケーキなんですねぇ。そういえば、マリー·アントワネットも「（パンがなければ）ケーキを食べればいいじゃない？」と言ったとか言わなかったとか。

Crepe-like pancakes in Sweden – oh so yum! Making those pancakes is not that easy, I have to say – it requires certain skills. But, I also have to say – it’s so easy to eat (a lot of) them! With lingonberry jam, cloud berry jam, and whipped cream…　スウェーデンのパンケーキは、クレープのように薄くて、リンゴンベリー·ジャムやクラウドベリー·ジャムホイップ·クリームで食べると最高～。軽く５枚くらい食べられちゃいます、はい。

Turnip is an essential ingredient in Borscht. I bet steaming it is certainly easy.　ボルシチには欠かせないかぶ。それを蒸すだけなら確かに簡単です。

Sewing while singing in Spain… that’s quite poetic! I might be able to hum a tune, but real singing? Hmm…　スペインでは歌いながらお裁縫する、、、なかなかイキですね。私も鼻歌くらいならできるかな。

Cantonese speaking people mention lettuce. Okay. I wonder if they eat raw? A bit too crunchy? It doesn’t seem so easy, but it must be very healthy.　広東語はレタスときましたね。生のままバリバリいくんでしょうか。そんなに簡単そうではないですが、まぁ、体には良さそうです。

I like this simplicity in Polish. Maybe Poland is a simple country. But, it’s also kind of charming and relaxing.　いいですねぇ、このシンプルさ。ポーランドってシンプルな文化なんでしょうか。なんだか落ち着きます。

I can totally imagine some German children playing on wooden toys or something. Then after their play time, they eat HARIBO.　　”木製の遊具で遊ぶドイツの子供たち”のイメージ。遊び疲れたら、ハリボーのグミ、かな。

Aww, baby food. That’s cute. But homemade baby food could be time-consuming. So, I believe, they mean baby food in those little jars.　ベビーフードとは、かわいい。でも、お手製のベビーフードはなかなか手間がかかるので、ここでの意味は、瓶詰めのものでしょうかね。

I think Tajine could be “easy-to-prepare” dish in Morocco. You just need to put in meat, veggies, and spices, then simmer for some time. They will all taste good, thanks to the magic of Tajine… Yup, easy-peasy!　モロッコでの「手間のかからないお料理」って、やっぱりタジーン？確かに、煮込む時間は必要ですが、お肉やお野菜＆スパイスを入れて火にかけるだけ、、、ではありますね。

This Japanese expression feels the most fitting (according to my Japanese DNA). No need to eat cake, bread, turnips, or baby food. However, I do want to request “rice, natto and miso soup” for my breakfast after finishing some easy task when I wake up.　やっぱり「朝飯前」が感覚的に1番しっくりきます！ケーキもパンもカブもタジーンも食べる必要なし、さっさとできちゃう感じ。でも、タスクが終わったら、ゆっくり納豆ご飯とお味噌汁食べたいな（TKGもいいな）。

10 cents donut? In this economy?

お買い得で”貴重な”ドーナッツとザーザー

Let me write about two delicious & dangerous snacks that you are sure to come across while walking through the medina in Morocco. They might not be the healthiest snacks, but sometimes you deserve a “cheat day” – I certainly enjoy cheating with these snacks.

モロッコのメディーナを歩いていると、絶対にみかける美味しいスナックをふたつご紹介します。決して、「体に良い」スナックとはいえないのですが、、、人生、時には＜チートデイ＞も必要！と言うことで、はい。

The first one is something between a smoothie and a parfait, called Za3Za3. It’s pronounced “Zaa-Zaa”, which makes me think of the sound of rain in Japanese. This snack is primarily an avocado smoothie, and the name of Darija means “to shake things up.” The texture is kind of like milkshake at McDonald’s and it has full of fresh avocado flavor. But, Za3Za3 has a lot more to enjoy. It is generously mixed with walnuts, almonds, dates and other dried fruits, topped with fresh fruits. Sounds healthy? Wait a little bit…

まずは、Za3Za3と呼ばれるこのドリンク？パフェ？です。これで「ザーザー」と読みます。雨の音のようですね。こちらは、アボカドのスムージーが主体になったスナックでして、ダリジャ語で”シェイクする”という意味があるのです。あ、そうか、よくマクドナルドなどにあるシェイクですね。と、考えると、アイスクリームの代わりにアボカドが使われているし、ナッツ類やデーツなどもふんだんに混ぜ混ぜされている、、まぁ、ちょっと健康志向？

Here is the part you don’t want to be fooled. It is usually decorated with plenty of chocolate sauce, often with a big drop of whipped cream, and even cookies like Oreos or KitKat. Yup, this whole “Shaken up” snack can easily reach 700~800 calories.

いえいえ、だまされてはいけません。こちらには通常、たっぷりのチョコレートソース、時にはウィップクリーム、さらには、オレオやキットカット（なぜだろう？）といったクッキーがのるんです。これ、普通に全部一杯食べたら700~800カロリーは下らないでしょうね。

From a historical perspective, it seems that the popularity of avocados began around the year 2000 in Morocco, triggered by the success in local avocado production. Za3Za3 became incredibly popular as a desert after breaking the fast during Ramadan. You put everything you want to snack, but let’s mix them with healthy avocados! Yup, it works.

歴史的観点では、約2000年ごろからはじまったモロッコでのアボカド生産／販売の成功がきっかけとなって流行りはじめたとか。そして、ラマダン中の断食明けのデザートとしてすごく人気が出たそうです。わかる気がしますぅ。

The next item is Sfenj, a type of donut you see freshly made in the tiny little corner shop. Unlike the American-style donuts, which are dense and often with lots of creams and colorful, sweet icing, this Moroccan-style donut has a crispy texture, and usually just simply sprinkled with sugar or drizzled with honey (you can buy plain ones, too).

もうひとつは、スフェンジ。ドーナッツです！欧米でスタンダードなしっかり＆ぎっしりした生地とは違い、サクサクっとした食感。さらに、カラフルで甘ーいアイシングなどはなく、シンプルにお砂糖をまぶす、あるいは蜂蜜を垂らすのみ（プレインでも買えますよ）。

Similar donuts can be found in other Arab and African countries. What makes them so delicious is being able to eat fresh and hot. You will find a small stall where an uncle (or young man) is constantly throwing the dough in hot oil. Often, the flying pot looks as old as the uncle, the oil seems “well-used, well-seasoned, and well-loved,” and that’s what makes Sfenj so yummy!

他のアラブ諸国やアフリカの国でも似たようなドーナッツが広がっているようですが、なにが美味しいって、揚げたてをほくほく言いながら食べれるところ。通常、小さな屋台やお店で、おじさん（お兄さん？）がひたすら揚げまくっています。年季の入った揚げ油にお鍋、、、これがいいんですよ。

It is said that these kinds of donuts were invented by the Moors who lived in the Andalusia region of Spain. At that time, these donuts were so popular, with people saying, “Those who make Sfenj are as valuable as kings.”

はじまりは、スペインはアンダルーシア地方に住んでいたムーア族さんたちが作り始めたとか。当時、この魅力的なスナックは大変な人気だったようで、「スフェンジを作るひとたちは、国王ほどに貴重な存在である」と言われたほど、だそうですよ。

You can buy Sfenj in Rabat for 1~2 dirhams (10~20 cents) each. They go perfectly with our beloved mint tea! Indeed, a snack that you can enjoy at this price, in this economy, is so valuable.

ラバトのスフェンジ、ひとつ１～２ディルハム（15～30円）で買えます。ミントティと最高にあいます！確かに、このお値段で楽しめるスナックは、「貴重な存在」ですねぇ。

Dr. Hellman in da house!

光ってるよ！旦那さん〜

My husband is a scientist and a programmer. After many years at Microsoft in Seattle, he started his own companies in the US and Morocco. He works hard every day, but it seems that he enjoys being able to dedicate his expertise and passion to his work to the fullest extent.

私の旦那さんは、科学者であり、プログラマーです。マイクロソフト社での長い年月の後、アメリカとモロッコで自分の会社を立ちあげ、日々がんばっております。自分の知識と情熱を、おもうそんぶん自分の仕事のために注げるのは、楽しそうでもあります。

Recently, he had the opportunity to give a lecture/workshop at a local university in Rabat. I followed him along! そんな中、地元ラバトの大学で、講演をするチャンスをいただきまして、私も一緒に講義を聞かせてもらいました。

The topic was about Informatics, I think. I said, “I think”, because I really didn’t understand what he was teaching… I am not good at IT stuff. There were about 30 students in attendance, and all participants seemed to understand (ha!) and to be able to learn something new, using their own laptops.

内容はコンピューターサイエンス系。集まった学生さんたちは約３０名ほど。みなさん、それぞれのラップトップでワークショップ的に参加しておりました。

Seeing my husband’s patient, friendly yet truly academic approach to the local students really made my day! I am so, so proud of him, and I respect him more than anyone else in the universe.

私はコンピューターのことは全然わからず、、、なもので、本当に申し訳ないのですが、彼の話す内容はちんぷんかんぷん。でも、学生さんたちの反応をみながら、丁寧にかつフレンドリー、そしてやはり「学者肌」な旦那さんの活躍を見れるのは、とても誇らしかったです。宇宙いち尊敬してます。

At the end, he received a certificate of appreciation, which was incredibly heartwarming. Well done! It has been our wish to be able to contribute something to the community since we moved to Rabat. We’re very happy to be able to connect with the locals little by little, through lectures like this one.

最後は「感謝状」のような賞状もいただいちゃって、なんと嬉しいこと。ラバトに越してきてから、何かしらコミュニティに貢献したい、と思っている私たち。少しずつではありますが、今回の講義のような形で、ローカルの皆さんと近づいていけたら幸せです。

And a big Shukran Bzaf to ENSIAS (Ecole National Supérieure d’Informatique et d’analysantes des Systems) for giving us this opportunity!

そして、このようなチャンスをくださったENSIAS (国立高等情報システム分析学部)のみなさんに感謝！

The Night with Wartburg Choir

ワートバーグ・クワイヤーの歌声に魅せられた夜

We recently attended a fabulous concert. 先日、とても素晴らしいコンサートに行くことができました！

The Wartburg Choir from Iowa came to Rabat as part of their world tour! This choir consists of students from Wartburg College, which was founded in 1852 based on the teachings of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. My husband and I are believers in this particular denomination, so we were very excited when we found out that the Wartburg Choir was coming. The choir has a great reputation and nearly 90 years of history.

アイオワ州からやってきているThe Wartburg Choirのワールドツアーが、ラバトにもきてくれたんです。こちら、Wartburg Collegeの学生さんたちによるグループなんですが、90年近い歴史あるクワイヤーであり、またキリスト教の中でもルーテル教団の教えに基づいて1852年に創立された大学。私たち夫婦も同じ宗派の信者、とてもワクワクで足を運んだコンサートでした。

Before the concert, we had dinner at a charming restaurant, Blue River, by the water near Rabat Medina. Even though it was 18 degrees outside, the kids were jumping into the river! We felt cold just looking at them… Anyway, we really enjoyed this great restaurant with a great view, and great food & great service.

コンサートの前に、メディーナからすぐ横、水辺の小粋なレストラン、Blue Riverでお夕食。1８度なのに、子供たちは川にジャンプインしておりました。寒そう～。お魚のグリル、すごく美味しかったです！

Then it was time for the concert. Guess what? It was free! How generous! The venue was a smaller concert hall right next to the Mohammed V Theater. I felt that the acoustics of the building were actually better than the Mohammed V Theater.

そしてコンサートの時間。なんと、無料！あらまぁ、ふとっぱらです。場所は、Mohammed Vシアターのすぐ横、小さめのコンサートホールなんですが、建物による音響効果はこっちの方が良さそうな気がしました。

First, Let Voix du Maroc performed a little Moroccan music. I was impressed by the beauty and the power of their sound, featuring eight singers and classical Moroccan instruments.

最初は、モロッコを代表して、Les Voix du Marocがモロッコの音楽を披露してくれました。８名のシンガーと、チェロやモロッコ古典楽器をふくめた演奏の美しさと力強さに感動。

Then, the Wartburg Choir appeared. There were about 80 singers! They tour Germany, Morocco, and Spain – my hut off to the organizer of this tour for such a big group! Apparently, the choir travels internationally for their concert tour every three years. It must be an unforgettable experience for the students.

そしてワートバーグの皆さんの登場。なんと80名ほど！これだけの数でドイツ、モロッコ、スペインなどをツアーするって、オーガナイザーの方、それはそれは大変そう。このクワイヤーのワールドツアーは３年毎だそうです。学生さんたちにとっては、大学生活でのかけがえのない思い出になるんでしょうねぇ。

Most of the songs they performed were a cappella, with each part having two parts (ex: Alto1 & Alto2), resulting in an eight-part structure. The harmonies resonated beautifully. I was fascinated to see how singers were arranged on the stage. They were rather more mingled than the traditional way of each part arranged separately. This way, I think, the scale of each part can influence itself in a more wholesome way, and the sound coexists better. Which also means, their harmonies can flow into our ears more smoothly. It was like magic!

ほぼほぼアカペラ曲の内容、どのパートも２部ずつあるので、８部構成。それだけに、ハーモニーの素晴らしさが響き渡っていました。そして並び方にも注目！それぞれのパートがお互いの音階を影響しあい、かつ、共存できるようになっているようです。だから、調和音が私たちオーディエンスの耳へスッと入ってこれる。魔法のようでした。

Just listen to it – the whole hour or so, I had goosebumps, or how I would say in Hawaiian, “Chicken Skin.”

とにかく少し聞いてみてください～。本当に鳥肌ものでした！

The performance ended with ‘Give Me Jesus.’ This song is quite famous, both lyrics and melody, among christians like us. My husband and I were deeply moved by the wonderful and nostalgic feeling of praising God through singing, which brought us into tears (see, there is no Lutheran church in Rabat and I miss our church time).

最後はGive Me Jesusで終了。この曲は、クリスチャンならきっと知っている、歌詞もメロディもかなり有名なもの。そして、私たち夫婦は、＜歌を通して神を賛美することのすばらしさ＆懐かしさ＞をめいいっぱい感じ、涙が出ました（ラバトにはルーテル教会がないんです）。

It was a precious time that was able to recharge our spirits. We are truly grateful to everyone at the Wartburg Choir for coming to Rabat and sharing their amazing talents. And, I still cannot believe that it was free…

スピリットが充電できた貴重な時間。こんなチャンスをもらえて、ワートバーグのみなさんに心から感謝です。ほんっと、無料だったなんて信じられないけど、、、

It’s that time of the season! – Jidar Street Art Festival

今年もやってきた、ジダール・フェスティバル

The Jidar Street Art Festival is back again this year! Last year’s Jidar happened shortly after moving here, and, thanks to Jidar (which means, “Wall”), we not only enjoyed street art but also learned the names and locations of various districts in Rabat.

今年もやってきました、Jidar Street Art Festival. 去年は、引っ越してきてすぐの時期、このジダール（壁、と言う意味）のおかげで、ストリート·アートを楽しむだけではなく、いろいろな地区の名前と場所を覚えることができました。

This year, the 11th edition, there were no artists from Japan, but it was still very international; artists from Spain, Italy, Russia, South Africa, etc., in addition to the local Moroccan talents were all welcomed and new murals were painted in 14 different locations throughout our beloved Rabat.

１１回目を迎える今年は、日本のアーティストさんはいなかったけれど、スペインやポルトガル、ロシアや南アフリカからの方を迎えて、１４ヶ所に新しい壁の絵が描かれました。

We took a stroll around and visited most of them. We enjoyed our walk & cafe time as well. I would like to mention a few of the murals which I think are absolutely inspiring! 

お散歩がてら、カフェでお茶などしつつ新作の壁画をみにいきました。その中で気になった作品をいくつかご紹介したいと思います。

First, this is a work by Malina Capdevila from Spain. It was still a work in progress when we visited, but I really liked these unique, rounded figures and the playful expression of the aunty! She looks a bit mischievous, yet full of life – she could be my role model 🙂

こちらはスペインのMalina Capdevilaさんの作品。まだ途中だったのですが、この独特な丸みある構図と、遊び感覚たっぷりなおばちゃんの表情がたまりません！私もこういう表情のできるおばちゃんになりたいです。

Another artist from Spain, Guillem Font creates something very natural to the next level, with his signature black and white colors. Looks simple, yet complicated, its composition is definitely a masterpiece. I guess that people with a fear of heights probably aren’t suited to being mural artists.

スペインからもうひと方、Guillem Fontさん。白黒の中にイキイキと描かれる自然を重視したデザインがすてき。よーく見ると、なかなか手の込んだ構図なんです。高所恐怖症の人は、壁画アーティストには向いていない、というのもわかりました

This bright, shiny red color! And the passionate sun and moon together showing the warmth of the earth. From Ecuador, Azpeger seems to know how his mural can get attention from everyone. So dynamic but also so delicate. This really made me feel as if I was being protected by the beam coming from the wall.

この真っ赤な色！そして情熱いっぱいの太陽と月！エクアドルから参加のAzpegerさんの壁画は、一瞬にして私のハートをバクバクさせてくれました。ダイナミックかつ繊細な構図、壁からでている何か、ビームのようなものに守られているような気持ちになる、不思議な作品でした。

Such a cute name, MizMiz, is from Morocco. And, the wall was incredibly cute, too! This mural delights passersby with a graphic art-like feel, and it’s just simply fun to look at. Filled with sweet, delicious oranges, which are abundant in Morocco – it’s a design that brings smiles to people’s faces (also makes us want to drink fresh orange juice).

モロッコを代表するMizMizさん。名前もかわいいけど、絵もすっごくかわいい！グラフィックアートのような感覚で道ゆく人を楽しませてくれる絵です。モロッコでたくさん収穫できる甘くて美味しいオレンジがいっぱいで、笑顔が生まれるデザイン。オレンジジュースが飲みたくなるかも、、、。

This art with a surprisingly profound composition by Iramo, also from Morocco. I think it beautifully represents contemporary Moroccan culture, its diversity, and its identity across the entire wall. This mural, located above a gas station near the busy Medina, coexists wonderfully with a soundtrack of Darija, French, English, Spanish, and some other languages which I don’t recognize.

なかなか深い構図のこの作品は、モロッコ出身のIramoさんによるもの。現代のモロッコの文化、多様性、アイデンティティなどを壁いっぱいに表していますよね。こちらの壁画は、忙しいメディーナ近くのガソリンスタンドの上に製作されたのですが、周りから聞こえてくるフランス語／ダリジャ語／英語／スペイン語／なんだかわからない語、、、というサウンドトラックと上手に共存していました。

Jumu Monster, from Peru and Chile, made a truly eye-catching work with vibrant colors and powerful composition. Just standing near this mural seems to radiate some cool energy… Look at these fishes! It’s so beautiful, that I had to take a close-up. The artist’s name is “Monster” but I’d really enjoy getting to know this kind of monster.

ペルー＆チリから参加のJumu Monsterさん、このあざやかな色の作品は本当に目をひきます。この壁画のそばにいくだけで、何かパワフルなエナジーをいただけるような。みてください、このお魚さんたち！あまりに素敵なので、ついアップで。モンスターってお名前ですが、こんな怪獣だったらお会いしたいですぅ。

So, again, we really enjoyed Jidar Street Art Festival. I am definitely looking forward to next year!

というわけで、今年もたっぷりと楽しませていただいたジダール。来年も楽しみです！

More Trees! More fun!

もっと知りたい、ラバトで見かける木々

The weather has been lovely and that means, more walking and more opportunities to notice beautiful trees and flowers around us. I get so excited about learning new plants, and I am going to share some of them on my blog again.

この時期、毎日お天気でお散歩日和なもので、ついつい木やお花に目がいく私です。よって今回も、ラバトでみかける素敵な草花をいくつかご紹介しちゃいます。

This tree is called the Cape Chestnut Tree. Its Japanese name is apparently “Carodendrum capense,” which doesn’t sound Japanese at all. Although the name includes “chestnut”, it’s actually a member of the citrus family, and not the chestnut family. It has sweet nectar as many butterflies, moths, and bees like to gather around the flowers.

この美しい花でいっぱいの木は、Cape Chestnut Tree、日本語名は「カロデンドラム·カペンセ」らしいのですが、日本語っぽくないので、ケープ·チェストナッツでいいのかな。名前に「栗」が入っていますが、実は栗科の木ではないそうです。甘い蜜があるらしく、蝶々や蛾、蜂がたくさん集まってきておりました。

The reason why it got “chestnut” in its name is that the flowers resemble those of the Horse Chestnut, according to Google. Have you ever seen the flowers of a horse chestnut tree? Well, here you go – do they look similar? As you know, horse chestnut produces chestnuts, but oh my, they look rather spiky and scary. And, they are not suitable for eating (poisonous!).

どうしてこの名前になったかというと、この木になるお花がHorse Chestnut、日本語名のマロニエに似ているからだとか。どうかしら？このマロニエには栗の実がなるんですが、あらまぁ、なんだかギザギザで怖そうです。そして食用には向いてないらしいです。

Next, I ran into this funky plant. It’s papyrus! I had known the name, but it was my first time to see the actual papyrus plant. I was very excited!

続いて、この傘のようなフサフサしたもの。実はこれ、パピルスなんです！名前は知っていたけどはじめて見るパピルスになんだか異常に感動してしまいました。

When you hear papyrus, a lot of people will think of ancient Egyptian civilization, I bet. So, the paper was made from the stem of this plant, and thanks to that technique, we still get to see those preserved hieroglyphs and unique Egyptian painting at museums and such.

パピルスといえば、エジプト文明で紙を作る素材として有名ですよね。紙はこの茎の部分をそいだもので作られるのだそう。そしてあの象形文字だとか独特なエジプト絵画が残されていったと、、、なんだか夢がある植物です。

You can actually find some ancient Egyptian art describing papyrus on the walls of pyramid. I guess they were very useful plants during that time. I find it quite fascinating, that this plant has lived for all these years, and I get to see it so close.

エジプト·ピラミッドの壁画などにも残されているパピルス。こんな身近で見るのははじめて、そしてなんともいえない形が素敵でした。

And, it is a loquat season! There are several trees near our apartment, laden with fruits. Loquats are highly available at local vegetable/fruit stand, so I have been eating them every day. They are very inexpensive here, not like Japan. I don’t have to feel guilty eating them a lot! Hamdulillah!

そして、ビワの季節です！我が家の近くにも何本か木がありまして、たわわになっているビワちゃん達。モロッコの野菜／果物やさんでよく見かけるので、つい買ってしまいます。安いんですよぉぉ。日本でのお値段とは比べものにならないくらい。ですので、好きなだけ食べられます！

Rabat has many beautiful gardens, and sidewalks are also well taken care of with many trees and flowers. I am so thankful that I get to learn the names and the types of plants, and share them with you all!

ラバトには美しい庭園がいっぱい。よって木々＆草花の名前や種類をいろいろ知ることができます。嬉しい日々です。

Fun of ”Sanpo (strolling/walking)” and Tree Watching

お散歩でみかける「この木なんの木気になる木」シリーズ

We attend Darija language class once a week at a café in Hay Riad. It’s only about a 10-minute taxi ride away from our home, but we always enjoy taking our walk to the class. It’s better for our health, and walking for one hour on a pleasant morning is such a joy!

毎週１回、ダリジャ語のクラスに参加しています。タクシーに乗ったら１０分ほどの場所なのですが、健康のため＆気持ちの良い朝のため、雨が降っていない限りいつも歩いて向かっております。

While walking, we try to speak in French as much as possible (for my practice), therefore, our conversation is very simple 😂. That’s okay, because we then have plenty of opportunities to look at “interesting trees” along the way. We had a lot of rain this winter here, so perhaps the trees seem extra healthy and vibrant.

約1時間のウォーキング。できるだけフランス語を使ったりしてのんびりと、、、。そして私の「気になる木」をチェックしつつ、です。今年は雨が多かった冬、だからか、木々もとっても元気そうです。

First tree to introduce – this is a Cockspour Coral Tree. Yes, Cockspour. What on earth is it? The flowers have rather unique shape, and apparently they resemble the cockspour of a rooster’s foot.

まずは、この真っ赤なお花の木。こちらCockspour Coral Tree, 日本語名は「アメリカディゴ」というらしい。このお花、なかなかユニークな形をしていますが、これがニワトリの足にある蹴爪ににている（Cockspour)ということらしいんですね。

Of course, I was curious what the real cockspour looked like. Here you go, it’s that pointed little thing sticking out on the back of the leg. Hmm. The shape certainly does resemble it, don’t you think?

気になったのでニワトリさんの足をズームでみてみます。この後ろ足部分にヒョコンととんがってでている、これだそうです。赤くはないけど、ふむふむ、形は確かに似ています。

This tree is apparently the national flower of Argentina and Uruguay. And, in Japan, it’s the prefectural  flower of Kagoshima. The passionate colors of the tropics are quite lovely, and I am thankful that I got to learn something new – a body part of the rooster 🐔.

この木はアルゼンチンやウルグアイの国花だそうです。そして、日本では鹿児島の県花らしい。情熱的な南国の色、なかなかすてき。この木のおかげで、「ニワトリの蹴爪」というものを学びました。

Next up, the orchid tree. I always thought that orchids only grew in fancy pots, intended to be given as gifts or something. But, apparently, they can also grow into such tall trees. We saw white and purple-colored orchids along our path, creating a very elegant atmosphere.

おつぎはオーキッドツリー。蘭って、鉢に入ってご贈答に～的なイメージだったんですが、このような背の高い木にもなるんですね。私たちの歩く道には白と紫のオーキッドツリーがありまして、なんとも言えないお品のある雰囲気です。

Then we noticed a sweet pleasant fragrance coming near one of the mosques we passed. It was from the “Japanese Cheesewood Tree.” As the name suggests, it’s a tree native in Japan, and some Japanese people use these tree bushes for warding off evil spirits, with some fish heads sticking to those brunches… interesting.

そして、甘い良い香りがしてきたなぁ、と思って出会ったのが、このJapanese Cheesewood Tree。ジャパニーズ！と言う名がついているだけ、日本古来の木だそうです。日本だとトビラと呼ばれていて、厄除け用にも使われるんだとか。

So, cheesewood. This is what I found out; if you break a branch of this tree, it smells like cheese. What kind of cheese? Raclette? Stilton? Gorgonzola?? Well, only one way to find out, I guess.

「なぜチーズウッド？」と調べたところ、枝を折るとチーズのような香りがするんだそうです。ちょっとやってみたいような。どんなチーズの種類なのかしら。

Another name for this tree is “Japanese Mock Orange Tree.” It is true that the flowers create some sort of sweet, orange-like fragrance, kind of like jasmine. I think I am going to stick with this smell, rather than stinky cheese.

他の名前がJapanese Mock Oranger Tree と、＜Mock (フェイク）＞がついちゃうのが悲しいですが、確かにお花はオレンジのような、甘くて優しい良い香りを醸し出しています。わざわざ枝を折って匂いを嗅ぐ必要はないかと思います。

Finally, look at the pomegranate blossoms! There are two types of pomegranate flowers, and this kind we saw, which looks a lot like carnation, doesn’t produce many fruits. The other type, however, can produce a lot of yummy fruits that we enjoy eating. I’ve added a photo of that flower as well.

最後に、ざくろのお花！いちじくには大きくわけて２種類の花があるそうで、私たちがみたのは何重にもなっているカーネーションのようなもの。この種類はあまりざくろの実は育たないそうです。もうひとつの種類でしたらガンガン実ができると言うことで、お写真を足しておきます。

I am not sure if I enjoy our walk to get to the class more, or the class itself. Either way, I feel so lucky to be able to have pleasant mornings with my husband!

というわけで、いろんな木々と出会えるお散歩。ひょっとしたら、ダリジャのクラスより好きかも。いつも一緒に歩いてくれる旦那さんに感謝です！

Dancing “Tomo ki Jawani”

ボリウッドダンスで若さを保つ

I absolutely love Indian culture. Thanks to my best friend, who is like a brother to me, I got to learn and appreciate so much about the rich and diverse world of India. Thanks, Abhi! So, even after moving to Morocco, I still crave Indian food from time to time. Thankfully, there are a couple of Indian restaurants here, but I also cook Indian food at home. It’s a little challenge sometimes, since I can’t get my hands on fresh curry leaves…

インドの文化が大好きな私。家族のような親友がインディアン、彼のおかげでいろいろな「濃いインドの世界」を教えてもらいました。モロッコに来てからも、時々食べたくなるインド料理なので、レストランへいくこともありますが、家でもセッセと作っております。カレーの葉が手に入らないのがちょっと残念。。。

Anyway, one day I found an ad that a local dance team would hold a Bollywood dance workshop! Hooray! I signed up, of course! There were about 6 of us (all ladies) and the song we danced to was “Shila ki Jawani,” a quintessential Bollywood tune. Oh, how I missed those days when I would attend a “Bollywood dance party” back in Seattle 🙂

そんな中、地元のダンスチームさんが＜ボリウッドダンス＞のワークショップを開催！と言うことで、参加してきました。お題の曲が＜Shila ki jawani＞という、コテコテなボリウッド曲というのも魅力でした。昔、よく、シアトルのボリウッド・ナイトで踊った曲の一つ。


I thought that the choreography was pretty advanced (or, I am not an advanced Bollywood dancer – obviously) . The 90-minute workshop flew by. The two instructors from Bollywood Fusion, Zaara and Hajar, were incredibly friendly and professional. They are, needless to say, amazing dancers!

なかなかレベルの高いコリオグラフィー。９０分のワークの時間は、すぐにすぎてしまいました。ボリフュージョンのお二人が、これまたすごくフレンドリーで素敵な女性。出会いに感謝です。

This workshop reminds me how much I enjoy dancing. I used to go to Zumba classes, about 5 times a week. A collaboration with Bollywood music definitely makes it an even more enjoyable exercise, I think.

やっぱり踊るのは楽しいぃ！シアトル時代は週５日くらいでズンバにも通っていたなぁ。ボリウッドとのコラボだとさらに楽しいエクササイズ。また足を運びたいなぁ。

By the way, I walk, squat and stretch every day. As I enter this “mysterious world of menopause,” I’ve come to realize how important it is to stay active (but also, how important it is to rest when I need to!). Then, it’s strange that I still can’t seem to lose weight… Pourquoi? Alesh? Why? I guess that’s another reason for the “mysterious world of menopause.”

ちなみに、毎日歩き、スクワット＆ストレッチをしています。更年期なお年頃、やはり体を動かすことは大事なのだなぁ、と実感。それでも痩せないのはなぜだろう。やっぱりそこも、更年期さまさま、、、なんでしょうねぇ。

<Shila ki Jawani> means “Shila’s Youth.” Yup, pretty ironic title for me. Well, I cannot compete with “youth” anymore, but I wish I could be as charming a woman as Katrina Kaif, regardless of my age. That’s a BIG Inshalla! 

＜Shila ki jawani＞とは、『シーラの若さ』という意味。ま、若さには勝てませんが、カトリーナ·カイフのように魅力的な女性でいたいなぁ、と願う日々です。

モロッコよいとこ１度はおいで〜

Recently, we had guests from Denmark, Spain and the U.S. It’s always fun to have friends and family visiting us & catching up. My husband and I enjoy hosting them at our place, introducing some Moroccan dishes and such.

今月は我が家にデンマーク＆スペイン＆アメリカからお客様が来てくれました。我が家で一緒に過ごしながらモロッコをご紹介、とても楽しい時間でした。

The two young students, friends of our son, have been studying in Europe. So, they decided to visit Morocco for one long weekend.

若い2人の学生くんたちは、私たちの子供のお友達。現在それぞれヨーロッパに留学中、ということで、週末を使ってラバトへ。

We gave them our usual “Hellman Tour” of Rabat – Medina, Tower Hassan, Kasbah and Chellah. We also took them to Casablanca, visiting the Hassan II mosque.

いつも通りの「ヘルマン·ツアー」をしました。メディーナやカスバ、シェラアなどを一緒に訪れ、１日はカサブランカへ向かい、ハッサン2世モスクへも。

This Hellman Tour is well known for a special lecture by Dr. Hellman on “The Relationship Between Moroccan Tiles and the Fibonacci Sequence.” This portion of the tour is always included (and not optional), even if you are not particularly interested in mathematics.

このツアーには、ヘルマン博士による「モロッコのタイルとフィボナッチ数列の関係」の講義がもれなく含まれます（興味がなくても、もれなくツアーに入っています。オプショナルツアーではありません)。

One of them is Pescatarian, so this street food of grilled fish was a good choice in Casablanca. Plenty of fish, with moroccan bread and salad, and it only costs 40 dirhams (about $4) per person! Great food option for growing young boys!

1人がお肉を食べないと言うことで、カサブランカでは焼き魚のストリートフードをモリモリいってみました。サラダとパン付きで育ちざかりの若者にはもってこい！美味しかったなあ。これだけ食べて1人４０ディルハム（約４ドル）ってすごいと思いません？

For their last morning, I made Japanese bento boxes. It has become my tradition to serve Japanese breakfast to our staying guests. We’ve known them from middle school time – now they are old enough to drink alcohol! I am always happy when my husband gets to have some drinking buddies 🙂 Time passes so quickly…

最後の朝はやっぱり日本食のお弁当で。我が家にお泊まりのお客様には、1回「和朝食」をお出しするのがお決まりになってきています。息子が中学生の頃から一緒だったお友達、今ではしっかりお酒も飲める歳になってて、なんだか感無量。

Other guests were my husband’s MIT seniors and his wife, who came on a tour from the US. They joined the group tour to visit some of the cities in Morocco, and Rabat was their entry city from New York. I believe they’ll visit Meknes, Fes, Marrakesh, and Casablanca. Upon arrival, we met them at their hotel, and strolled around the media until their “tour orientation” time in the evening.

こちらはアメリカからツアーでやってきた旦那さんのMIT先輩達とその奥様。ニューヨークからラバトへ、そしてメクネスやマラケッシュ、フェズなどを回るツアーだそうです。到着してすぐ、滞在中のホテルで出会い、「ツアー·オリエンテーション」の時間までメディーナをテクテク。

We walked through the souk, giving them the very first feelings of Morocco. Also, we introduced them to what we think is the best street donut in town! I hope they are currently enjoying the tour, visiting many different areas with their tour guide, plus 30 other participants.

ラバトで1番美味しい（と思う）ドーナッツをご紹介したり、スークの中を歩いて「モロッコ感覚」に触れていただきました。これからツアーガイドさんと一緒に総勢３０名ほどで回るモロッコ、楽しんでいただければと思います。

We’ve been very lucky to have our friends and family visiting Rabat often. I believe the true charm of Morocco lies in its people, and only one way to experience it is to be here, and interact with them. That should create the most wonderful souvenir, and, my husband and I are always happy to help that happen. So, please come visit us!

こうやって、いろんな方がラバトに足を運んでくれるのはとても嬉しいことです。歴史建造物やツーリストスポットを回ることも楽しいのですが、モロッコの良さは、「人」にあると私は思っています。真心のあたたかいモロッコの人たちとの時間が何よりも素晴らしい思い出になる。なので、みなさんもぜひいらっしゃってくださいねぇ。

Teletubbie Land in Morocco

ハイキングを楽しむ日

We have been members of the International Club of Rabat (ICOR) since we moved here. Through this club, where English is the common language, we enjoy making friends through participating in various activities. So great to get to know people from all over the world!

ラバト国際クラブに入っている私たち。英語が共通語のこのクラブを通して、世界各国からモロッコ（ラバト）に住んでいる方達との交友を楽しんでいます。

Coffee time, Happy Hour, Darija class, and Karaoke night! And, we especially enjoy hiking time which ICOR organizes.

コーヒータイム、ハッピーアワー、ダリジャクラス、ショッピングデー、カラオケナイト！などなど、様々な企画があるんですが、その中でも私たち夫婦が好きなのがハイキング。

This time, we hiked in Boughaba Lake National Park located in Kenitra. Since we don’t have a car (that is one of the reasons we moved to Agdal – no car life is what we wanted!), getting to the national park itself was already a pretty big event. Wake up early, take a train, then taxi…

今回は、アグダルからちょっと離れたケニトラ市にあるブーガバレイク国立公園でのハイキングでした。車のない生活にあこがれてアグダル生活を選んだと言ってもおかしくない私たち。この国立公園に到着するまでに朝６時に起床、電車でケニトラ駅へ向かい朝食、そしてタクシー、とそこまででだいぶ長い旅でした。

Anyway, it was well worth a visit! Gorgeous lake and gorgeous view. Since it was a weekend, many members with children participated, which made our outing even more fun. We hiked along the lake shore, observing wild birds, and saying hello to MANY sheep. Serious amount of sheep. I wonder if they know that Eid al-Adha is approaching…?

週末だったので、お子様連れのメンバーも多く参加。湖のほとりを歩いて野生の鳥を観察したり、たくさんの羊さん達に出会ったり。この羊さん、そろそろイード·アル·アドハー（犠牲祭）近いよねぇ、、、とふと思いました。

The hills were covered in tiny flowers. It kind of reminds me of Telletubbie Land. For our much-deserved break, we all sat down and enjoyed mint tea, moroccan bread & pancakes, honey, and olives…etc. on the top of the hill. The cool breeze was absolutely wonderful!

丘は小さなお花でいっぱい。なんだかテレタビーの世界。休憩は、丘の上でミントティーや出来立てホヤホヤのモロッコのパンケーキ、オリーブ、はちみつなどなど。涼しい風がとても気持ちよかったです。

My husband likes birdwatching – you can tell that from this picture. After coming back home, he enjoyed this. I’m sure it tasted extra delicious after walking 25000 steps. 

旦那さん、鳥が好きなので一生懸命みてました。かわいい。２５０００歩あるいた後のビールは格別においしかったようで、何より何より。
