モロッコで出会ったゴールデン・ガールズ

I had a shocking encounter the other day, just a few blocks from our apartment, that I couldn’t move for a while.

先日、あまりの急な出会いにびっくりドッキリしてしまい、しばらく動けない状態になってしまいました。

For those who don’t know how iconic the Golden Girls show is in the U.S., let me tell you; The Golden Girls was a television drama series that aired for eight seasons, starting in 1985. It captured the lives of four wonderfully ‘aged’ ladies – Blanche, Sophia, Dorothy and Rose – who have finished married lives and raising children, and started living together in Miami. Their comical conversations, filled with juicy romance, mishaps, and dramas, were so attractive that they even won an Emmy Award.

ゴールデン·ガールズとは、アメリカで1985年から8シーズン放映されたテレビドラマ。4人の素敵なおばさまの共同生活、結婚や子育てを卒業した熟年さんのブランチ、ソフィア、ドロシー、そしてローズ。恋多き、ジョーク多き、ハプニング多き、とにかく元気いっぱいな熟女たちのコミカルな会話がエミー賞にも輝いておりました。

I believe that “aged” things are wonderful. Fruits, cheese, balsamic vinegar, or wine for those who drink. Perhaps it’s after their 50s that women finally develop a deeper, more refined charm, with better taste in lifestyle choices after experiencing both sweet and sour aspects in life. So, when such nicely-aged women came together, it’s no wonder that the Golden Girls became popular and ended up as a big hit.

「熟した」ものは素晴らしいんです。フルーツやチーズ、バルサミコ酢、お酒を飲む方ならワイン？女性も、甘い酸っぱいを経験した後だからこその＜味わい深い＞魅力が出てくるのは、50代以降でしょうかね。そんな素敵な女性が4人集まれば、そりゃぁ味わい深いショーになるわけです。

When I moved to America for the first time, I watched reruns of the Golden Girls. It became one of the best shows to understand the “American sense of humor”, I must say. And my favorite character was Rose, who was played by Ms. Betty White. Oh she was, and still is, my hero! She’s so playful, witty, a bit naughty, and adorable. Betty was an active actress until she left the earth at age 99. Absolutely stunning lady!

アメリカに越してきた時、このゴールデンガールズを再放送で観ていた私にとっては、何よりも「アメリカンジョーク」を学ぶ場として最高でした。そしてお気に入りは、ベティ·ホワイトさん扮するローズおばちゃん。とってもお茶目でちょっとナイーブで可愛い。ベティさんは99歳まで現役女優として活躍していた方、数々の名言も残してくれていますぅ。

Anyway, why did I see the sun visor with the Golden Girls here? Was the show popular in Morocco? I started thinking, and of course, the theme song “Thank you for being a friend” was stuck in my head while thinking. I don’t know the definitive answer, but it seems the entire series is available to watch on <Disney+ Morocco>, and even in French! Well, that’d be something I would enjoy watching…

で、The Golden Girlsはいったいモロッコで流行っていたのか？テーマソングの＜Thank you for being a friend>が私の脳裏で止まらない状態な中、すごーく大切な質問が頭にあがりました。確実な答えはわからないのですが、どうもDisney+ Moroccoで全シリーズ視聴できるようです。それも、フランス語で。うふふ、なんだか観てみたい。

Incidentally, other countries really jumped on the concept of this “mature women power” sitcom and created their own versions. For example, “Altn Kizlar” was Turkish Golden Girls, just not in Miami, but in Istanbul. How about these beautiful Chilean ladies? Their show was called “Los Años Dorados”, so, I guess they were living in the Golden Years of their lives.

ちなみに、このような＜熟女パワー＞がモティーフのテレビ番組は他の国でも制作されているようです。例えば、Altn Kizlarは、ゴールデン·ガールズがマイアミの家からイスタンブールへ移った感じでしょうかね。チリの熟女達もお元気そうです、その名もLos Años Doradosなので、ゴールデン·イヤーズですね。

Representing Africa, I would like to introduce “Sukkar Ziada” ladies from Egypt. With their “extra sugar”, I am sure they all have sweet lives, like four Cleopatras enjoying nectars of fruit… I find their colorful costumes quite lovely!

アフリカ圏から代表でSukkar Ziadaもご紹介。”砂糖を多めに”というタイトルがなんだかあったかいです。クレオパトラが4人で共同生活している感じなのでしょうか。カラフルな衣装がなかなか素敵です。

Four dames living on the coast of Sussex, England, were captured as “Brighton Belles.” In Spain, “together but not revolted” Chicas enjoyed their life together in the show “Juntas, pero no revuletas.” One of the Catalan women was portrayed as a <dissipated and a man-eater>; well, I guess cougars are everywhere in the world…

イギリス、サセックスの海岸に住む4人組は、＜ブライトンの美女達: Brighton Belles＞だそうです。そして、”うんざりしない共同生活 (Together, but not Revolted)”を楽しむスペインの熟女達。うち1人のカタラン人女性は「ふしだらで男好き」という設定だそうです。やりますね。このJuntas, pero no revueltas, なかなかドラマティックそう。

“Girl Power” is so appreciated and so refreshing regardless of where you are from. And, now, I am ready to say to all my girlfriends, in Morocco, in the US, in Japan, in India, and in Hawaii, in EU…  “Thank you for being a friend!” 

このようにアメリカ版The Golden Girlsを元にしたドラマは、数々の国で作られていたようです。どの国に住んでいても、やはり『女の友情』は大切なのですね。”Thank you for being a friend!”

“Tooth” to be told… I am a big girl now

モロッコの歯医者さんに行きました

What is your “weakness”? For me, it’s definitely a “going to the dentist.” Back in the states, I had a dentist I entrusted everything to, and his name was <Dr. Moody>. Yes, it’s his real name. I’d always be very moody the day before my dentist appointment. He was a very good dentist, but my “Dental Phobia” never subsided, though I somehow managed to endure it.

みなさんは「弱点」ありますか？私は”歯医者さんへ行くこと”が最高の弱点です。アメリカ時代、歯のクリーニングから治療まで、全てをたくしていた歯医者さんがおりまして、彼の名はDr. Moody。歯医者さんの予約のある前の日からは、私の方がかなりムーディー。とても良い歯医者さんではありましたが、私の『歯科恐怖症』はおさまる事はなく、それでもなんとか耐えていました。

Now, we live in Rabat, been here for a year and a half. Surely, it’s about time to get my teeth cleaned. Just as I was thinking so, a piece of a previously treated tooth chipped – a very sad moment. Oh, well, it’s a sign that I really needed to see a dentist.

そして。モロッコに越してきて１年半。「そろそろ、歯のクリーニングが必要だよねぇ～」と思っていた矢先、以前治療してあった歯のかぶりものが欠けるという悲しい出来事。しょうがない、、、歯医者さんに行こう。

So, first thing first, “Dentist Shopping” started. We picked out well-reviewed dentists nearby, using the power of the internet and visited them in person. Duo Dentist, which is only an 8-minute walk from our house, seemed to be a very “comfortable” with a nice relaxed waiting room and a Rene Magritte-looking painting. I like Magritte. And, it’s close to my favorite Indian restaurant. “We could do a consultation now if you like!” and I was immediately taken to the treatment chair. Seriously??? I felt completely unprepared, both mentally and physically.

で、まずは＜歯医者さんショッピング＞。ネットやらで近場で良さそうな歯医者さんを抜粋し、実際に足を運ぶ事に。そんな中、我が家から歩いて８分というロケーションにあるDuo Dentalへ向かったところ、ブラウン調のリラックスできる待合室とマグリットっぽい絵に好感触高め。「なんなら初診、今やっちゃう？」となり、すぐさま診療台へ。おいおい！心と体の準備、全くできてないよ～と思いつつ、まぁ、とりあえずドキドキしながら初診が開始となりました。

I had X-rays taken with the latest 3D scanner, was throughouly examined, then had many photos with flash taken with a cellphone-like device. It was like <Teeth-Selfie>.“This is what those TikTok girls feel like, maybe,” I thought. I was then led straight to a beautiful office, where my teeth were projected onto a huge TV screen on a wall, the one you’d watch football playoff games. I was both amazed and embarrassed at the same time, seeing my gigantic set of teeth. A young handsome dentist, Dr. Krafess, who is not moody at all, explained everything in English. Mostly just fine, but he pointed out, “these can be put in laminate veneers, they will look nice!”

最新の3Dスキャナーでレントゲンを撮ったり、診察されたり、、、そして携帯のようなカメラでぱしゃぱしゃと何枚も写真を撮られたと思ったら、素敵なオフィスへ直行。おおおおおおおきい、フットボールの試合をみるようなテレビスクリーンにドカーン！と映し出された自分の歯に恥ずかしさと、あまりのハイテク度にびっくりになっていると、先生が流暢な英語で「こことここ、ラミネートベニアにしたら見た目も綺麗だし、いいよ」と。

And so, my dental visits began just like that. Smoothly and unexpectedly. I thought that veneers were for the rich ladies of “The Real Housewives” shows or for the Hollywood celebrities, but I guess a normal civilian like me could get one, too. Maybe, I could start a “The Real Housewife of Agdal” series. Anyway, after only four visits (the last one was just a 2-minute check of the veneers), the results were amazing! The doctor was always attentive, and the procedure was done so gently and carefully, with “All-I-Can-Ask-Anesthesia” — I almost felt guilty.

というわけで、まるで流作業のようにスイスイとはじまった歯医者さん通い。ベニアって、お金持ちの奥様達が審美歯科で行うホワイトニングの一環だと思っていたので、なんだか不思議。とはいえ、ほんの4回（そのうち最後の１回は、ベニアの状態をチェックするのみ、３分間だけ）で、綺麗な綺麗な出来栄え！たのめば好きなだけ（笑）麻酔もしてくれるし、とにかくいつも優しくチェックしてくれつつ、の施術なので、なんだかこっちが申し訳なくなるくらい。

I know I shouldn’t dwell too much on the cost differences, but the price of cleaning and these cosmetic dental treatments (veneers) here is probably 50%~80% less than what I would pay in the US, even without insurance (and let’s not start talking about the incredibly high insurance cost in the US…). No wonder that Morocco is one of the popular destinations for dental/medical tourism…

あまり金額のことは言うべきではありませんが、クリーニングや審美歯科治療（ラミネートベニア）をこちらで受けた場合の額とアメリカで支払っていた額、と信じられないくらい差があります。たぶん、50％～80％、モロッコの方が安いです。アメリカでは、すっごく高い保険を払っていても歯医者さんはお金がかかる、という感じでしたが、さすがモロッコは＜歯科医療ツーリズム＞の目的地となるくらいなんだなぁ、と実感。

I don’t think my “Dental Phobia” will ever go away. It’s in my DNA and can’t do anything about it. But, I am so grateful for: 1) finding a dentist in this new country, a new neighborhood where I can receive satisfactory service, 2) for being able to make appointments easily, 3) for its walking distance location and, that means, I can treat myself with a yummy fresh juice at Sahbi (my favorite juice stand) after the appointment, and 4) for being budget-friendly. I feel like I am a big girl now! I am proud of myself to have taken a big step forward, as a person with a dental phobia, to have received dental care in Rabat. Having healthy teeth really does make you feel more positive & grownup, isn’t it?

私の『歯科恐怖症』は一生無くならないと思います。はい。でも、新しい国、新しい土地で、1) 納得のいくサービスを受けられる歯医者さんを見つけられた事、2) 予約がしやすい事、3) 歩いていける距離という事（治療の帰りに、ご褒美のフレッシュジュースをお気に入りのカフェで飲める事）、そして4) お財布に優しい事、、、全てにおいて感謝です。なんだか「一歩先に進めた！気分」であり、「大人になれた（笑）気分」でございます。歯の調子がいいと、心が前向きになれますよねぇ。

I would like to send BIG CHUKRAN to my husband and my teddybear who always come to my appointments for emotional support. By the way, the “Duo” in Duo Dental seems to come from the fact that they have two dentists in the office. It has nothing to do with Duolingo. 

歯医者さんの予約にいつも一緒にきてくれた旦那さんとテディベアのフーバーに感謝。ちなみに、Duo Dental のDuo は、先生が2人いらっしゃるからのようです。Duolingo とは関係ありません。

A Dream You Dream Together Becomes Reality

みんなで見る夢は現実になる

Question: Are Architects Artists or Engineers? I once had a discussion about this with my artsy friends back in the US. What do you think? I believe that great architecture has a power to give special identity and pride in humans life — during our time in Barcelona, I really enjoyed being surrounded by the Catalan Art Nouveau of Antoni Gaudí and Lluis Montaner. And, in the US, it was overwhelming to encounter some of the fascinating designs by Frank Lloyd Wright or Frank Gehry. In our hometown, Seattle, we have a wonderful public library created by Rem Koolhaas.

建築家はアーティストか、エンジニアか？以前、アート仲間達と討論になった事があります。優れた建築物は、人々の生活に特別なアイデンティティと誇りを宿す力があると思うんですよね。バルセロナ滞在時代はアントニ・ガウディやルイス・ミュンタネーのカタルーニャ・アールヌーボーを楽しめましたし、米国内では、フランク・ロイド・ライトやフランク・ゲーリーの建築物に圧倒され、またホームタウン、シアトル市にはコールハースがデザインした素敵な図書館もありました。

And now in Rabat. The Royal Theater, designed by Ms. Zaha Hadid, opened this spring. Even a fleeting glance at its exterior takes your breath away. It is said that Ms. Hadid was inspired by the flowing lines of Arabic script. Looking at such a beautiful architecture made me wonder how it was inside… well, we finally had the opportunity to visit the interior of this amazing theater the other day!

そしてラバト。ここに、あのザハ・ハディットさん設計のロイヤル・シアターがオープンしたんです。一瞬みただけでも、息を呑む外観。こちらはアラビア語の流れるような線にインスピレーションを受けているそうです。中も見てみたいなぁ、、、と思っていや矢先、このロイヤル・シアターの内部に足を運ぶ機会がありました。

It was a comedy stand-up show by Egyptian-American, Mr. Bassem Youssef! He is known as the “Egyptian John Stewart” for his jokes, which are full of political satire. His humor not only made him famous as a comedian, but he was also named one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” due to his openness about political issues. By the way, his background as a cardiac surgeon is also quite interesting, yes?

エジプト系アメリカ人のバッセム・ユセフさんのコメディーショー！彼は＜エジプトのジョン・スチュワート＞と呼ばれるほど、たっぷりの政治風刺を入れ込んだジョークは、彼をコメディアンとして有名にしただけなく、「世界でもっとも影響力のある百人」にも選ばれたほど。元々心臓外科医だったという経歴も興味深いですよね。

The show was incredibly fun! Especially because it’s been a long time since I laughed so hard at stand-up comedy in English. For me, who constantly struggles with Darija and French these days, it felt like a much-needed break…

さて、バッセム氏のショーはすっごーく楽しくて、久しぶりに英語のスタンダップで大笑いしました。日頃、ダリジャ語とフランス語と葛藤している私にとって、しばし休憩をいただいたような気分。

However, what was more amazing was to be able to step into the Royal Theater itself. From the moment we entered, I was in “Oh my goodness!” mode. The walls, stairs, ceiling, even benches and doors — everything was mystical and mesmerizing. You know the feelings that you stand in front of the amazing painting and you just cannot move, because you are surrounded by the massive amount of story coming from the painting? It was like all the details of the interior were there to welcome you with surprise gifts, or surprise stories. Kind of like a special moment on Christmas morning, just before opening presents. At the same time, so surely, you know you just became a part of the architecture. Looking closely at the interior— it seems symmetrical, but not. Geometric, but warm. The entire space was filled with a rather unique worldview — neither past nor future, neither outside nor inside. Maybe, I felt like I was swimming in a deep sea. Anyway, it does make you lose track of where you are — perhaps, this kind of feelings is the message which Zaha-san wanted to send; “Now, let yourself be enchanted by the magic of art!!”

でも、なにが素晴らしかったかといえば、このロイヤルシアター内部！入った瞬間から「オーマイガー」状態。壁も階段も天井も、全てが神秘的で魅惑的。素晴らしい絵の前に立って、その絵の中にある膨大な量に囲まれて身動きができなくなる感じ？でしょうか。インテリアのあらゆる部分が、なんだかサプライズ・ギフトのようなサプライズ・ストーリーのような。クリスマスの朝の、プレゼントを開ける直前のワクワク感がありました。内装をよく見ると、シンメトリーのようでシンメトリーではない、そして幾何学的なのに、あたたかみがある。過去でもない、未来でもない、どの時代にいるのかわからなくなるような、深海を泳いでいるような、、、不思議な世界観で満たされていました。たぶん、そういう感覚が「さぁ、これからアートの魔法にかかってね！」という、ザハさんからのメッセージなのかもしれません。

We had balcony seating. My first impression was that it was designed so that every seat could be VIP seats. The sense of immersion and unity can be experienced from wherever your seat is situated. Inside the theater, it was full of sharp lines, I saw some triangles, some squares, and some diamonds. But again, not many of them were symmetrical. These intricate lines made me feel like I was folding origami. So, I took a picture with an Origami crane!

座席についてまず思ったのが「全ての席がVIP」になれるように設計されているところ。どの席からも臨場感が味わえるよう、そして一体感が生まれるようにデザインされている感じ。ギザギザな三角形や四角形が合わさっているんですが、やはりシンメトリーではないんです。入り組んだシャープな線の数々は、まるで折り紙を折っているような気分。という事で、折り鶴と一緒にパチリ。

The theater pays meticulous attention to even the smallest details. For example, the wall in front of the concession stand has a gentle dent to prevent drinks and snacks from falling. The metal toilet paper covers in the restroom have the Royal Theater logo! The main theater (there is also a mini-theater) can accommodate about 1700 people, and each seat has a beautiful design, with very comfortable padding.

細かい部分にも非常に気を遣っている劇場。たとえば、コンセッション前の壁には、飲み物やスナックを置いてもおちないような窪みができていたり、そうそう、お手洗いのトイレットペーパーカバーには、ちゃんとロイヤルシアターのロゴがありました。約1700人収容可能のメインシアター（ミニシアターもあるそうです）、座席ひとつひとつにも素敵なデザインが施されていて、座り心地も抜群でした。

Ms. Zaha Hadid designed not only buildings but also household stuff, such as cutlery. I’d love to dine on this streamlined set – I bet the soup tastes so good and so smooth with this spoon… You can take a look at this set in the museum located within the Rhode Island Schools of Design, where our son is studying graphic design (yay! the class of 2027!).

ちなみにザハさんは、建築物だけでなく、このようなカトラリーなどもデザインしています。流線形なこのセットでお食事してみたいです。このスプーンでスープなんて食べたら、美味しそうだわぁ。こちらは、我が息子が勉強しているRhode Island School of Design 内にある美術館で見ることができます。

So, it was more of an “architecture show” than a comedy show for me. On the way home, we walked along the beautiful Bon Regreg river, catching glimpses of the city’s summer tradition: the Mawazine Festival. My husband and I were filled with joy of living in Rabat, seeing people enjoying the lovely summer night. Maybe, it became our version of “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” by stepping inside a dreamlike building.

というわけで、コメディショー以上に＜建築ショー＞だった夜。帰り道は美しいBou Regreg 川のほとりを歩き、夏の風物詩であるマワジン・フェスティバルの様子を垣間見ながら、ラバトに住んでいることへの幸せとワクワク感でいっぱいになった私たち夫婦でした。まるで真夏の夜の夢、でも見てるような。

Finally, my personal opinion on “Are Architects Artists or Engineers?” is this: I believe that architects can be artists and engineers, but above all, they are Dreamers. They are the people who never lose their passion for realizing their dreams. And, this reminded me of what John Lennon said – “A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together becomes reality.” 

最後に、『建築家はアーティストかエンジニアか』の私的な見解：建築家は、アーティストであり、エンジニアであり、でもその前に、夢を実現することに情熱を絶やさない人、ドリーマーなんだと思います。そして、『ひとりで見る夢はただの夢にすぎない。みんなで見る夢は現実になる。』この、ジョン・レノンの格言を思い出しました。

I love you, My Liver.

あなたは私の、大好きな肝臓

Do you have a pet name that your partner uses? My husband and I call each other by our first names and don’t really have our “love-names” or “pet names.” But, he often describes me as “My Watermelon Consumption Machine” and I am incredibly honored to be called that way! Yes, I love watermelon, especially Moroccan ones. They are so sweet; it’s no wonder, considering its African origin.

みなさんは、パートナーからどのように呼ばれていますか？私たち夫婦は名前で呼び合っていますが、時に旦那さんから「僕のスイカ消費マシン」と呼ばれることもあります。大好きなんです、スイカ。。。特にモロッコのスイカはめっちゃくちゃ甘いです。さすが原産地がアフリカの果物。

In Darija, the Moroccan dialect, people apparently call their “sweetheart” as <Lkbida Dyali> – this means, “My Liver.” I know ‘my heart’ is widely used in a romantic setting, and it kind of makes sense, BUT, liver? That’s pretty… profound? Here is the explanation: lkbida (الكبدة) means “liver,” and Dyali (ديالي) means “my” and the reason behind is that “you are as important as my internal organ I need for being alive!” Very true, you need your liver to digest food, which is truly a basic for staying alive. So, for the sake of your loved ones, you want to avoid excessive alcohol and high-fat foods in order to prevent liver failure.

モロッコで話されているダリジャでは、”愛しいあなた”のことを「私の肝臓：Lkbida Dyali」と呼ぶそうです。「私の心臓」ならわかる気がしますし、実際にスウィートハートなんて呼んでいる人たちも多いはず。でも、肝臓、って、、、なかなか深いです。Lkbida (الكبدة) が”肝臓”、Dyali (ديالي)が”私の”、なんですが、その理由は、「あなたは私が生きていくのになくてはならない臓器のように、大切なのよ！」だそうです。さぁ、愛する人のために、アルコールや高脂質な食べ物は避けなくては。

This got me thinking… “What do people in other countries call their sweethearts?” Well, here are some interesting pet names I could find.

そこで気になったのが、「他の国ではスウィートハートをなんて呼ぶのかしら？」と。ようは、Pet Name というものですね。ちょっと調べてみました。

Let’s start with Ireland. Apparently, there is this expression, <Mo Chuisle> which translates to “my pulse.” Being near someone you love makes your heart race, yes? Combined with the Moroccan liver, it’s an expression of affection from Cardiology and Gastroenterology. Very well.

まず、アイルランドでは『Mo Chuisle』という表現があるそうです。これは訳すと「私の脈拍」。愛する人のそばにいれば、心臓ドキドキ！になりますよね。モロッコの肝臓と合わせて、循環器科と消化器内科で愛情表現できちゃいますね。

Speaking of wellness and human anatomy, let’s continue with some expressions with body parts. The Swedish word <Sötnos>, meaning “cute nose,” is apparently a pet name there. Swedes do have pretty good looking noses, don’t they? In Greece, <Μάτια μου (Matia Mou)>, meaning “my eyes”, is often used to call someone you love. Come to think of it, those eyes of the Gods/Goddess in Greek Mythology are pretty mesmerizing…

体のパーツで行きますと、スウェーデン語の『Sötnos』、つまり「かわいい鼻」がペットネームだそうです。スウエーデン人さん、鼻高くてきれいではありますね。ギリシャでは『Matia Mou』で「私の目」という表現も使われているとか。確かに、ギリシャ神話に出てくる神様達の目はなかなかのものです。

Does being in love raise your body temperature? In Thailand, a husband might sometimes call his wife <แม่ยอดชู้ (Mae Nua Oun)>, which translates into “mother of warm flesh.” I guess a good mom has a warm heart as well as a warm body, but I find it a bit unsettling.

愛で溢れていると、体温があがるんでしょうか？タイでは、仲の良い老夫婦の間で、奥さんのことを『แม่เนื้ออุ่น（Mae Nua Oun)』と呼ぶことがあるそうで、これは訳すと「あたたかい肉の母親」だそうです。嬉しいような嬉しくないような。

A country with many forests, Germany, has many animal-related pet names. Hächen (hare), Bärchen (bear), Spätzchen (spallow), and, more interesting one, Shnecke (snail) are all used as pet names. By the way, this spiral-shaped pastry is quite popular in Morocco and France, and it is called Schneck. If someone gives this to you, you might be very much loved!

森林の多いドイツでは、愛する人を動物にたとえるようです。Hächen (野うさぎ）、Bärchen （くまさん）、Spätzchen (つばめ）、変わったところで、Shnecke (カタツムリ）も愛称となるそうです。モロッコやフランスのパン屋さんでよくみかけるこのクルクルしたパン、シュネックと呼ばれていますが、これを誰かから頂いたら、愛されているってことかも知れませんねえ。

In English, many pet names come with food-related ones, such as Sweet Pea, Pumpkin, Cupcake, Honey, Sugar… Also, French people use <Mon Chou> to call someone they adore. “My cabbage” is a common pet name, apparently.

英語だと、Sweet Pea, Pumpkin, Cupcake, Honey, Sugar… と食べ物が多く使われていますが、フランス語でも同じように『Mon Chou』、私のキャベツちゃん、がペットネームなんだそう。これからキャベツを見る目が変わりそうです。

Finally, us, Japanese. I don’t think there are many pet names in Japanese culture. We may not express our affections often through words… but I’ve heard that the saying “The moon is beautiful, isn’t it?” has long been considered equivalent to “I love you.” Not direct, but kind of romantic, no? However, there is one problem: what should we do on nights when the moon isn’t out? I think I will just eat more watermelon.

最後に日本語。どう考えてもあんまりペットネームはない気がするんですが、昔から「月が綺麗ですね」と相手に伝える事が「愛しています」と同様の意味になる、、、と聞いたような。お月様が出ていない夜には使えない愛情表現です。

Grieving Watermelon & Exciting Neighborhood

悲しみのスイカと、盛り上がりまくるご近所さんたち

It was an incredibly exciting, football-filled day for us. Two important teams, Japan and Morocco, both had matches – and the games were so, so intense! There were some seriously nerve-breaking moments, and I was even worried about my husband, who had heart surgery two months ago. It was THAT intense…!

昨日は非常に「サッカー熱」の高い日となりました。ドキドキ度が高くて、実際のゲームでは夫婦そろって心臓バクバクになってしまいました。２ヶ月前に心臓の手術をした旦那さんのことが心配になるくらいでした。

The first game, Japan vs. Brazil, ended up as a heartbreaking match for us, with Brazil scoring in the last minute. Literally, “Last Minute.” After the match was over, I was spaced out for a while. It was a mean, brutal ending… but that’s sport, sometimes.

最初のゲームは＜日本対ブラジル＞。すごーーーーく残念な、残り１分で逆転されてしまった試合。終わってから、なんだかしばらくぼーっとしてしまいました。

We watched this match at our favorite local café, Hatch. My husband was fully immersed in cheering for Japan, wearing Mt. Fuji hat. I wore a Samurai Blue team T-shirt, with my teddy wearing a “Victory!” headband. You see, we were so ready to win…

地元のお気に入りカフェ、Hatchで観戦したのですが、旦那さんはしっかり”富士山”になって応援。私は侍ジャパンのTシャツと、テディベアに『必勝』はちまきを作って行きました。

Anyway, on our way home, to soothe our broken hearts, we bought a huge watermelon at the hanut. We were walking slowly, sighing, carrying the heavy watermelon. We were the two “Sad Gaijin (foreigners)” in the neighborhood – and many people made hand gestures indicating ‘well, that’s too bad…’ which warmed our hearts 🙂

帰り道、傷心を癒すため、アパート近くのハヌートで大きなスイカを購入。ため息まじりに、この重いスイカを運びトホトホ歩くガイジン夫婦。たくさんのモロッコの人たちが「残念だったねぇ」といったハンドジェスチャーをしてくれて、、、心が温まりました。日本チーム、よくがんばったよね！

Then, at 2am, there was another important match between Morocco vs. The Netherlands. We had planned to go somewhere to attend the watch party, but I became too sleepy to do so. Alors, we ended up watching it at home.

そして夜中２時の試合は、＜モロッコ対オランダ＞。こちらもどこかに出向いて観戦しようと思っていましたが、かなり眠気にやられてしまい、家で見ることに。

But, we could hear the excitement of people in our neighborhood from nearby cafés and restaurants, and the atmosphere was incredible (at 2-4am… I felt bad for people who didn’t care about football… sorry). The game went to a penalty shootout, and again, our hearts were pounding like crazy.

それでも、近くのカフェやレストランからワァワァと人の声がたくさん聞こえてきて（お外の席が多いですので）すごい熱狂！最後はPK戦になっちゃって、もうこちらも心臓バクバク状態。

The result was, Morocco advancing to the next round! Hooray! By this time, it was almost 5am, but the whole city had turned into a “celebratory parade,” with fireworks going off, car horns blaring, and people singing in unison… I wonder if everyone was able to go to work this morning.

結果は、モロッコが次のラウンドへ進出！この時点で朝５時近く、だったのですが、もう街中が「祝賀パレード」になりまして、花火はあがるは、車のクラクションは鳴りっぱなしだし、一斉に歌い出す声も聞こえてきて、、、みなさん、今朝（普通の火曜日の朝）、お仕事とか行けたんでしょうかねぇ。

Social media today are full of the joy of the Moroccan people. I will post scenes from Rabat right after Saibari-san scored & when the street became crazy with everyone celebrating (at 5am).

今日のソーシャルメディアは、そんなモロッコの人たちの喜びぶりでいっぱい。最後にサイバリ君がPKを決めた時や、その後のラバトの様子（早朝、５時ですよ）を貼っておきますね。

According to the weather forecast, Rabat will experience a slight heatwave starting tomorrow. However, the enthusiasm and passion of the Moroccan people for the World Cup is far hotter, making this a truly exciting summer! 

お天気予報によりますと、明日からはラバトも若干の熱波がやってくるようでして。でも、モロッコの人たちのW杯サッカーに対する熱気の方がはるかに高い＆熱い、そんなエキサイティングな夏です。

Pottery making experience in Sale

サレーで陶芸体験

Making something with your own hands is always fun, isn’t it? While living in the US, my job as a stage MC often involved making silly hats (to entertain audiences), or, making character bento boxes for our kids (which was not always appreciated, I think). 

自分の手で何かを作るのは楽しいですよね。私はアメリカ在住時代、仕事がら「かぶりもの」（司会業務の時にかぶって観客を楽しませる）を作ったり、子供達の「キャラ弁」を作ったりしてました。

I was also known to be a creator of “Santapons” – a very feminine Christmas ornament (if you want to know more about it, let me know 😆). However, there was one thing I was interested in, but never had a chance to try… that was, pottery making.

そして悪名高き（笑）「サンタポン」をクリスマス時期に作ったりもしていましたが、ひとつ、興味があってもまだやったことのない事がありまして、、、それは陶芸でした。

So, when my friends told me about a “beginner-friendly pottery workshop” in Sale, a town across the river from Rabat, I was so ready to join 🙂

ラバトから川を挟んだお隣街、サレーで”初心者歓迎陶芸ワークショップ”に参加できる！と聞き、お友達と一緒に参加してみました。

From our home, we took the tram to the very last stop, Hay Karima. Then about a 15-minute walk to this beautiful Safirat Al Khazaf, a place known as a “goodwill ambassador for ceramics.” Our reservation was for 10am, so we decided to have a lovely petit dejeuner nearby before the class. Then we’re welcomed with this beautiful courtyard. 

我が家からはトラムに乗って最終駅Hay Karimaまで。そこから約１５分歩くと、この素敵なたたずまいのSafirat Al Khazaf、＜セラミックの親善大使＞という場所に到着。10時のクラスの前に、近場で朝ごはんをして英気を養いました。ちなみに、ワークショップは予約制です。

First, it was time for registration and payment. The workshop alone costs 50MAD (about $5). But if you want your creation baked and pick it up two weeks later, it is 80MAD (about $8). What a bargain! Of course, we chose to pick up our “masterpieces” later. About 10 people gathered, and all put on cool aprons and ready to start!

はい、まずはレジストレーション＆お支払い。ワークショップだけなら50MAD (約850円）、自分で作ったものを焼いてもらい、２週間後に取りに来るなら80MAD (約1300円）。ということで、私たちはやはり思い出として自分達の作品をいただく予定で支払いました。約10人ほどの生徒があつまり、エプロンを着用して準備万端！

There wasn’t any formal lecture to start. We were simply handed chunks of clay. Okay, what are we supposed to do with it? A very sweet instructor, Ms. Naima, said “Knead it well to remove the air. You can do so, by, kind of like making a bread, or you can divide it into pieces and just slap them on the table.” Good stress release activity for sure, for the first 10mins.

特に形式ばったトークなどはなく、とにかく粘土が渡されます（笑）。「空気を抜くように、よく練って。パン生地のようにしてもいいし、分けてテーブルにたたいてもいいのよ」と優しく指示をしてくれるナイマさん。

Next comes the shaping. “You can make whatever you like!” we were told. Hmm, I should have planned, because I had actually no idea what I wanted to make. Eventually, I decided to make a flower vase, and the method I chose was hand-building; it seemed perfect for me, because I remember that I won the play-dough contest when I was in kindergarten. However, very soon I learned that the glory of kindergarten is meaningless when it comes to pottery skills as an adult. The other method would be to use an electric potter’s wheel, just like the one Demi Moor gracefully uses in her “Ghost” movie. I had a chance to try the wheel, but I wasn’t graceful at all. Maybe I needed to listen to “Unchained Melody.”

次は成形ですが、「好きなものを作っていいのよぉ～」という事で、ちょっと迷いましたが『花瓶』に決定。私が選んだ＜手びねり＞製法は粘土を手で積み上げたり、付け合わせたりして行うもの。もう一つの方法は、＜電動ろくろ＞を使った、そう、あの映画でデミームーアーが優雅に、ロマンティックにやっていたアレです。私”もろくろ体験”をさせてもらいましたが、全然ロマンチックにはならなかったです。

Well, it seemed that my husband and I had completely different approaches to a pottery making. He used a wooden ruler, carefully calculating every detail, and using very mathematical methods all the way through. Such a scientist. Pour moi? I just decided to create “a vase with attitude” and just kept on going with my hands and with free-spirit. When it comes to pottery, your personality really reflects, I guess.

陶芸に対するアプローチが全くちがう夫婦です。旦那さんは、木の定規を使いながら細かい部分のギャップなども出ないように計算しながら。さすがサイエンティスト。私は「ちょっと生意気な花瓶」をイメージしてこのような、自由人ならではの製作過程。性格の違いがよく出てます。

The workshop lasted about 90–120 mins. Before we left the class, we added our names to the finished pottery (or, the finished clay chunk? blob? which MIGHT become pottery). I believe there were about 5 instructors/assistants for the workshop, and they were all sweet and encouraging. They laughed at my “vase with attitude” and that’s all I remember at the end. These clay things will be baked in a kiln after they dry – and will be ready to be picked up. Pretty exciting! If I want to paint the pottery afterward, there’s an extra charge… I think I will decide after seeing how it looks in two weeks.

ワークショップは90分～120分。最後に名前をいれて、作った陶器（になるであろう、粘土）と、先生方とお別れ。乾燥したあとに、釜で焼いてくれるそうです。たのしみぃ！その後絵付けをしたい場合はまた別料金がかかるそうで、、、こちらは、焼かれた後の状態をみて決めようかな。

So, here are five things I learned from today’s experience: 今回の陶芸ワークショップで学んだ5つのことを書いておきます：

1) It’s good to have a general idea of what you want to make; drawing it down on paper and bringing it with you might be helpful also. 何が作りたいかある程度のアイデアを決めておくといい。紙に書いて持っていくのも良いかも。

2) It’s best to keep your nails short. Also, it’s a good idea to remove rings, and tie your hair. 爪は短い方がいい。指輪も取った方がいい。長い髪の毛は結んだ方がいい。

3) It’s not possible to expect that you can master the pottery wheel techniques in one workshop. ろくろのテクニックは1度のワークショップでは学びきれない。

4) It’s also not reasonable to expect magic. It’s a full of “inshallah” when it comes to pottery making. 美しい陶芸品は期待せず、あくまで、インシャーラの気持ちで参加。

5) It’s fun to check out the HUGE Carrefour and its shopping center across the street from Safirat Al Khazaf after class. I felt like I was in Detroit. お隣にあるカルフールがすごく大きい。ショッピングセンターのようになっていて、デトロイトにいるかと思った。

Anyway, I am really looking forward to picking up my vase in two weeks! Inshallah! ２週間後に取りにいくのがとても楽しみです。

More FIFA related fun!

W杯の雰囲気をさらにご紹介

Okay, continuing from the last post – let me show you the FIFA-heavy atmosphere of Rabat! 前回の続きで、FIFA色高いラバトの雰囲気をご紹介しますね。

Here’s the Moroccan team support decoration at the Arribat Center (shopping mall). There he is! The mascot, a lion named “Assad”- which means lion in Arabic.

ショッピングモール、アリバット·センターのモロッコチーム応援デコレーションがこちら。いるいる！マスコットのライオンちゃん、その名もAssadくん。アラビア語でライオン、の意味だそうです。

The Moroccan side’s locker room before a match, I suppose. I love that there are two very iconic Moroccan soft drinks; POM and Hawaii 🙂

試合前の控え室の様子なのでしょうが、さすが！モロッコが誇るふたつのソフトドリンク、POMとHawaiiが置いてあります。

And, of course, there is also tajine. After all, you would want to enjoy the taste of home to recharge your energy, right? そして、タジーンも。やっぱりね、「おふくろの味」を食して英気を養わなければなりませんので。

If you look closely, there is already the FIFA trophy! I admire your positive thinking, Morocco! そしてよく見たら、もうトロフィーが、、、すばらしいポジティブさです。

This billboard nearby street is for my favorite cheese, “La Vache qui rit” AKA, “The laughing cow.” It now features Mr. Nayef Aguerd, a member of the Moroccan national team.

近くの通りを歩いていてみかけたこの広告は、私の大好きなチーズブランド、La Vache qui rit（英語名：The Laughing Cow) のものですが、このW杯期間特別バージョンなのか、ナショナルチームの一員であるNayef Aguerdさんがご登場中です。

By the way… while writing this blog now, I am anxious to see the match in two hours – Japan vs. Sweden. As a couple with Swedish and Japanese roots, this is shaping up to be a very interesting match to watch. So, I made a “friendly dinner” with two flags. Let there be peace in our marriage after the match. Oh, the terrifying part is, though, that, depending on how Japan proceeds, it could turn into a “Morocco vs. Japan” match next!

ところで。あと2時間後に「日本対スウェーデン」戦があるんです。スウェーデン·ルーツ、そして日本ルーツをもつ夫婦としては、なかなか面白い観戦になりそう。とりあえず、今日のお夕食は、日本とスウェーデンを称えておきました（でも、日本に勝ってもらいます）。さて、怖いのは、日本がどのように次の対戦に進むかによっては、なんと「モロッコ対日本」の可能性が、、、という事なんですよお。

Well, if it does, I might not be able to leave home, honestly. I would be agonizing over whom to cheer for. I’d rather stay in my room and not watch the game. I don’t think I can take sides. The World Cup can be very tough. Very, very tough.

もし「モロッコ対日本」になった時には、私は家から出れないかも、、、どっちを応援していいかわからなくて悩みまくります。引きこもります。W杯ってかなり深刻になります。

On the bright side: I was wearing a Japanese team T-shirt when I went out shopping. A lot of people here cheered me on, saying, “Go Japan!” It made me happy to feel that Morocco is such a pro-Japanese country – AT LEAST for now.

ちなみに、本日、日本チームのTシャツを着てお買い物などに行っていたんですが、街の人に「日本頑張れ！」などなど、たくさんお声をかけてもらいましたよ！親日国なんだなぁ、と感じて嬉しかったです（今の時点では、ということで）。

Dima Maghreb! Always Morocco! (Maybe, Japan, too)

頑張れモロッコチーム！（と、日本、アメリカ、スウェーデン・チーム！）

Are you all following the World Cup? My husband and I are pretty into it, especially for Morocco, Japan, the US, and Sweden teams. I love the surprises, though, like when teams from “known to be strong” countries are defeated or end up tied with “not so known to be strong” opponents.

みなさんもチェックしていますか、W杯？私たち夫婦もしっかり毎日チェックしておりますが、モロッコ、日本、アメリカ、そしてスウェーデンを応援しつつ、今まで「最強」とされていた国のチームが、あまり強そうでない（？）チームと同点になったり、ビックリを楽しんでおります。

Another fun thing for us is our hometown, Seattle, is hosting some matches! Our eldest son lives there, and he apparently goes to a few games. I heard the atmosphere in Seattle is absolutely exciting, and I can totally feel it! I will be honest; seeing familia cityscapes on the screen makes me a little bit homesick. Seattle, “the Emerald City” – I miss you!

私たちの故郷、シアトル市もゲームをホストしています。シアトル在住の長男は、いくつかゲームに足を運んでいる模様。懐かしい街並みなどが画面に映し出されると、正直、ちょっぴりホームシックな気持ちにも。エメラルド·シティと呼ばれるシアトル。懐かしいなぁ。

Rabat is also well immersed in the FIFA mode! Many of the games by our Atlas Lions (Moroccan team) start at 11pm, but cafés and restaurants stay open until very, very late – so that you can watch the game while sipping mint tea. We don’t have TV at home, but it’s really fun to be able to hear cheers from outside, and we can easily get the “general idea” of the game’s progress 🙂 Who needs TV subscriptions, when all our neighbors can tell us what’s happening! 

ラバトもしっかりワールドカップ一色！モロッコのチーム、『アトラス·ライオンズ』の試合の時は夜２３時からが多いのですが、カフェやレストランなどはちゃーんと試合観戦ができるように夜中までオープン状態。テレビのない私たち夫婦も、しっかりお出かけして観戦しておりますが、外出しなくても外から歓声が聞こえてくるので、試合の大体の流れがわかる、、、という面白さ。

These are some fun decorations found at our local shopping mall – Arribat Center. The Canadian team’s theme was quite inviting, with a beach theme. The moose is very cute (and looks powerful, too).

地元のショッピングモール、アリバット·センター内も、W杯にまつわるデコレーションで盛り上がってます。こちらはカナダチームのデコレーション。なかなかムース君がかわいいですよね。

How about the American team? I guess the image of the US is “Coca-Cola” and “popcorn”… The eagle is awfully AI-driven, but I still take it.

そして、アメリカチーム。やっぱり、アメリカのイメージって＜コカコーラ＞と＜ポップコーン＞なのかしら。このイーグルのAIたっぷりなデザイン、すごい。

I see the FIFA Trophy motif everywhere. Did you know that this trophy is actually the “second edition”? So, the first one, adorned with a beautiful statue of the Greek goddess of victory, NIKE, was created by a French sculptor. This “first generation” trophy is kept in Brazil. However, it is actually a replica. Why? It’s been stolen numerous times (apparently when the Nazis tried to steal its gold, an Italian man hid it inside a shoebox, under his bed, to save it!) and it still hasn’t been found…

FIFAのトロフィーのモチーフもいろんなところで見かけるようになりました。ちなみに、このトロフィーは、実は２代目なんだそうです。こちらが、初代のものでして、フランスの彫刻家によって美しい勝利の女神、そう、Nike (ニーケ）が装飾されています。実は現在ブラジルに残されているこの初代トロフィーはレプリカだそう。何度も盗難にあったあげく（なんと、ナチス軍がゴールド目当てで奪おうとした時は、とあるイタリア人男性が自宅のベッドの下に隠して難を逃れたとか）、現在まだ見つかってないらしいのです。

Oh, by the way – Nike’s distinctive “Swoosh!” logo; can you see what they got inspiration from? Yup, these wings of the Greek goddess surely express power and victory, don’t they?

ちなみに、ナイキ社のあの独特なSwooshと呼ばれるロゴ。こちらはこのギリシャ神話の女神様の勇敢な羽の動きからインスピレーションを受けたとか、、、？

The design of the second generation of the trophy, which has been passed down since 1974, was crafted by Italian designers. Made of 18-karat gold with malachite inlay, it’s quite large, standing 36.8 centimeters tall and weighing 6175 grams. Incidentally, only members of the winning team and heads of state of countries visited on the “Trophy Tour” are allowed to touch (or kiss, maybe?) this trophy.

そして２代目、1974年から現在も受け継がれているこのトロフィーのデザインは、イタリアの彫刻家の手によるもの。マラカイトも施された１８金でできていて、高さは36.8センチ、重さは6175グラム、とまぁなかなかの大きさです。ちなみに、このトロフィーに触れる（よくキスなどもしてますね）のは、優勝国チームメンバーと、『トロフィーツアー』が訪れる先の国家元首のみなのだそうです。

In the midst of a complex global situation, with some saying a Third World War could break out at any moment, watching the World Cup matches makes me keenly aware of the importance of world peace. No matter which team wins, I believe the greatest champions are those who can maintain the peace in this world.

複雑な世界情勢の中、第三次世界大戦もいつはじまってもおかしくないなんて言われていますが、スポーツを通して競い合うW杯を観戦していると、平和の大切さをひしひしと感じますよね。どの国が優勝したとしても、本当の意味での1番の優者は、世界平和を保てる人たちなんだと思います。

But… still… I want Morocco or Japan to win. “Dima Maghreb!”& “Dima Japan!”　でも、やっぱりモロッコか日本に勝ってほしいので、、、がんばれえええ！

“Are you a fantastic horse?” – Tbourida Experience

モロッコのファンタジアへようこそ

I have been studying French as well as Darija, since moving to Morocco. One of the very first words I learned in French was “Cheval”, which means horse. Why? Because, well, it was thanks to Duolingo. They were trying to teach me “Are you a horse?” in French, but, I have never ever had an opportunity to use this sentence in real life. Maybe I will, someday?

モロッコに越してきてから、ダリジャ語と共にフランス語を勉強していますが、始めた頃に1番記憶に残ったのが馬、Chevalという単語でした。なぜか？Duolingoに出てくるセンテンスでこういうのがあったんです：『あなたは馬ですか？』この文章を実際に使えたことは一度もありません。

Anyway, there was a traditional Moroccan tournament centered around horses taking place nearby. Of course, I got interested – perhaps I might be able to ask “are you a horse?” question, finally. Soooo, three girls from different countries (Ireland, Belgium and Japan) went to check out this “Tbourida”! The Hassan II Trophy features 18 groups (called Sorbas) from 18 different districts of Morocco, competing in equestrian techniques. Unfortunately, the horses at the tournament looked very concentrated and professional, there was no chance that I could ask “Are you a horse?” to them.

さて、馬（Cheval）がメインのモロッコならではのトーナメントが近くで行われており、お友達ガールズ３人で行ってみました！The Hassan II Trophyと呼ばれる大会では、モロッコの１８地区からやってきたグループ（Sorbas)が馬術を競いあいます。『あなたは馬ですか？』と聞くチャンスはありません。

We arrived at the Dar es Salam complex just after a 20-minute drive. Parking and admission were free! It was a sunny Saturday afternoon, so there was a huge audience, bustling with families. Many stalls like a “Fan Zone” invited us, and we were immediately surrounded by beautiful horses as soon as we entered. So exciting!

約２０分の運転で到着したDar Es Salamコンプレックス。駐車場も入場料も無料！ということで、週末のこの日はたくさんの家族連れで賑わっていました。ファンゾーンのような屋台などもあり、入場してすぐに出会う美しいお馬さんにも囲まれ、気持ちはもりあがります！

About 15 minutes before the official tournament, there was a guest group performing some sorts of acrobatics. They seemed to be from another country (maybe Spain?) and they surely helped the audience prepare for the big tournament — very electric.

トーナメント１５分前。エンターテイメントなのでしょう、こんな風に雑技をしちゃうグループ、すごいなぁ。たぶん、モロッコの人たちではなさそうですが、会場は大盛り上がりでした。

Then, the tournament began. Each Sorbas consisted of 11 members. At the center was the leader called Moqaddam, who normally started by giving signals and prayers through the microphone. With his perfect guidance, the Sorbas aim to move as one with harmony. That’s the whole concept of this game!

そしてトーナメント開始！それぞれSorbasは１１人構成。中心にはリーダー的存在のMoqaddemさんがいて、マイクを通して合図やお祈りをしてはじまります。何よりも、グループが一心同体で動くのが目標のようです。

How do they get points to win? Apparently, there are three main important pillars to be judged. First, “Hada”: the quality of presentation itself. The team’s beautiful & traditional costumes, as well as the bridles and headgear on the horses are quite elaborate.

どうやって審査されるか？基本的には３つのポイントがチェックされるようです。1つ目はHada: プレゼンテーション性の高さ。チームの美しく厳かなコスチュームはモロッコの伝統的なもの、そしてお馬さんが装飾している頭絡·馬勒も審査の対象なのだそう。

Second, “El Marek”: the team’s movements. The 11 horses must walk/run/gallop in a synchronized way, as if they are on a single line. The way each person handles their musket guns also needs to be united.

2つ目はEl Marek: チームの動きそのもの。１１頭の馬達がまるで一つの線にそって歩く／走る、そして、それぞれが持っているマスケット銃の操り方も、ハーモナイズされていないといけない、と。

The third one is “La Talka”: at the end of the run, they all fire their muskets (either into the air or towards the ground), and it seems to be very important that the sound of the gunshots is synchronized.

3つ目はLa Talka: 走行の最後にはそろって銃を打つのですが（空に向けたり、地面に向けたり）、その音も同じタイミングであることが大切らしい。

Wow… quite challenging, isn’t it? and the sound of gunshot is REALLY something! These particular equestrian performances, which have been held since the 15th century, are truly awe-inspiring when seen up close. It’s no wonder they are designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage! By the way, the name “Tbourida” is said to originate from the Arabic word “barud,” meaning “gunpowder.” This tournament is also known as “Fantasia” – because it IS fantastic!

という、なかなか難しい内容のトーナメントです。銃を打ち放す音がすごいのなんのって、、、。15世紀から続けられている騎馬演舞、さすがユネスコ無形文化財に指定されているだけあって、間近でみるとかなり圧倒されます！Tbouridaというネーミングは、「火薬」を意味するアラビア語の「バルード」に由来しているそうですが、またの名を「Fantasia」とも呼ばれています。そう、お馬さんも騎手達もみんなファンタスティックなんですもん。

Speaking of fantastic, my friend brought watermelon for snacks! It was sweet, cold and delicious. Being able to enjoy these traditional events with fabulous friends, was definitely FANTASTIC!

ファンタスティックといえば、お友達が持ってきてくれたスイカ！甘くて冷たくて、美味しかったあぁぁぁ。こういった伝統行事をローカルの人たちと一緒に楽しめる事も、本当にファンタスティック、でした。

“Where there is Harmony, there is Peace”

平和な心はハーモニーから生まれます

Around this time last year, I auditioned for a local choir and, luckily, I became a member. For the past year, I’ve been practicing as a member of The Harmonize Choir, and last week and the week before, we had two concerts to finalize this season. In this blog, I’d like to share a little bit through pictures and short videos.

ちょうど去年の今頃、地元のクワイヤーのオーディションがありまして、幸運なことにメンバーになれました。それから1年、The Harmonize Choir の一員として練習に参加してきましたが、先週＆先々週、2度のコンサートがありまして、、、今回は、その様子を少し動画や写真でご紹介させていただきます。

The first concert was at St. Pierre Cathedral, a Catholic Church near Medina in Rabat. It was a roughly 90-minute show with a large audience. Singing all 15 songs without looking at the sheet music was quite a challenge for my perimenopausal brain… 😅

1度目のコンサートは、メディーナ近くにあるカトリック教会、St. Pierre Cathedral で。たくさんの観客の皆さんと一緒に、約９０分のショー。１５曲すべて楽譜をみないで歌う、というのは、メノポーズな脳みそにはかなりのチャレンジではありましたが、、、（笑）。

Our “choir colors” are white and beige. I don’t usually wear those colors, so I felt a bit ‘uneasy’ putting such pure & angelic colors on myself. But when we sang together, I forgot all about it! Choirs often choose black dresses or black suits, but this white/beige color scheme is quite nice, isn’t it?

白／ベージュが基本カラーなんです。あまりそういう色を着ない私は、ちょっと恥ずかしい気分。でもみんなで揃って歌えば、そんな気持ちは忘れちゃいます！黒いドレスやスーツで統一することが多いクワイヤーですが、この＜白／ベージュ＞な色合い、なかなか良いですよね。

Our conductor, Maestro Ghali-san, has an impressive background, having studied music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The song with his solo was one of my favorites.

コンダクターであるマエストロ·ガリさんは、ボストンのバークリーでも音楽を学んだ素晴らしい経歴をお持ちです。彼のソロも入るパフォーマンス、私の大好きな曲のひとつでした。

The best accompanist, Madame Tatiana. She is a very talented musician and a very sweet lady!  

伴奏者のタティアナさん。彼女ご自身も素晴らしいミュージシャンなのですが、ハーモナイズ·クワイヤーにとって、なくてはならない存在！

The concert ended with a fun song titled “Dance!” It’s a song that requires “multitasking” as it involves singing AND dancing (well, just clapping…really 👏). This is the kind of moment when both the singers and the audience can enjoy themselves together – and I loved it!

最後は「ダンス！」というタイトルの楽しい曲で終了。歌と一緒に踊り（手を叩くだけですが、、、）もするという、”高技術”が求められる（笑）曲。歌ってるいる私たちも、オーディエンスの方達も一緒になって楽しめるひととき。

Our second concert was held inside this magnificent building: The Mohammed 6th Tower, where the Waldorf Astoria Hotel recently opened. Just being able to visit and go inside the hotel was a great experience, but we were invited to sing for a special “Employee Appreciation” event.

2度目のコンサートは、なんとこのタワーの中で。Waldrof Astoriaホテルが最近オープンしたばかりのMohamed 6th Tower。全てが美しく、全てが新しいこのホテル内で、従業員の方達を激励するイベントがあり、私たちのクワイヤーはそちらでのエンターテイメントとして参加しました。

We got to see some of the rooms of the upper floors… absolutely gorgeous! And the view was spectacular! Of course, the prices are also incredibly ‘spectacular’, so we probably won’t be staying there – but I’d love to try the restaurants one day.

高層階のお部屋もみせてもらいましたが、、、すっごーくゴージャス！もちろん、お値段もすっごーくゴージャスなので、お泊まりすることはないかも、ですが、レストランなど行ってみたいですねぇ。

The event also included a wonderful “cocktail hour,” where we enjoyed delicious cakes and snacks. We all felt like VIPs!

イベントでは、こんなに素敵な「カクテルタイム」もあり、美味しいケーキやスナックをいただきました。クワイヤーのメンバーの1人がこちらのホテルで働いている、というご縁、素晴らしかったです。

After moving to Morocco, I was a little sad about not being able to sing in my home church choir, but joining the Harmonize Choir really was one of the best things I did. The songs we sing in this choir include a lot of gospel and pop hymns, so it really gives me a chance to praise God through singing. I’m also incredibly grateful for meeting all the wonderful members, for working together towards the goal of putting on a concert, and for them accepting a foreigner like me. 

モロッコに来てから、教会でのクワイヤーで歌うことができないのがちょっと寂しかったのですが、Harmonize Choirで歌う曲はゴスペルやポップな聖歌なども多く、私にとっては歌を通して神様への賛美ができる嬉しい時間なんです。そして、メンバーのみなさんと知り合えたこと、一緒に「コンサート」という目標に向かって頑張ってきたこと、私のような’ガイジン’も受け入れてくれたこと、全てに感謝でいっぱいです。
