Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes in Agdal

July 20, 2026

I recently noticed something different while walking around our neighborhood. “Huh? Where are the store signs?” Once I noticed a few of them, I cannot stop noticing more and more – oh my goodness, so many signs have been removed! It seemed a bit excessive for a “summer cleaning”, doesn’t it?

Also, the terrace seating areas of local cafés have been significantly “down-sized” or “renovated”; some of the awnings are gone, replaced by parasols, and the tables and chairs don’t stick out to the sidewalks.

Even our Hanout, which used to have many cases of vegetables and fruits in front of the shop, noe sells everything “inside.” So, overall, the sidewalks have been widened, making it easier to walk, or easier for people with wheelchairs to maneuver.

But, it really happened suddenly! Pourquoi? Alesh? A little research revealed that the local government has stepped in. Apparently, the Rabat City Council has implemented various regulations to improve the landscape and ensure the pedestrian space. For example, signs that don’t follow the regulations in terms of type, size, or placement are now subject to removal. They also check if sunshade tents or display shelves are too large and obstruct pedestrian traffic.

I guess, Starbucks signs are okay as they are: but not Krispy Kreme…

These kinds of regulatory campaigns are definitely underway. No wonder the streets looked different, a bit featureless. But, I guess, we will see more aesthetically pleasing, welcoming, and beatifying signs – I hope, Inshallah.

I had a shocking encounter the other day, just a few blocks from our apartment, that I couldn’t move for a while.

The Golden Girls Sun Visor in Morocco!

For those who don’t know how iconic the Golden Girls show is in the U.S., let me tell you; The Golden Girls was a television drama series that aired for eight seasons, starting in 1985. It captured the lives of four wonderfully ‘aged’ ladies – Blanche, Sophia, Dorothy and Rose – who have finished married lives and raising children, and started living together in Miami. Their comical conversations, filled with juicy romance, mishaps, and dramas, were so attractive that they even won an Emmy Award.

I believe that “aged” things are wonderful. Fruits, cheese, balsamic vinegar, or wine for those who drink. Perhaps it’s after their 50s that women finally develop a deeper, more refined charm, with better taste in lifestyle choices after experiencing both sweet and sour aspects in life. So, when such nicely-aged women came together, it’s no wonder that the Golden Girls became popular and ended up as a big hit.

When I moved to America for the first time, I watched reruns of the Golden Girls. It became one of the best shows to understand the “American sense of humor”, I must say. And my favorite character was Rose, who was played by Ms. Betty White. Oh she was, and still is, my hero! She’s so playful, witty, a bit naughty, and adorable. Betty was an active actress until she left the earth at age 99. Absolutely stunning lady!

Anyway, why did I see the sun visor with the Golden Girls here? Was the show popular in Morocco? I started thinking, and of course, the theme song “Thank you for being a friend” was stuck in my head while thinking. I don’t know the definitive answer, but it seems the entire series is available to watch on <Disney+ Morocco>, and even in French! Well, that’d be something I would enjoy watching…

Incidentally, other countries really jumped on the concept of this “mature women power” sitcom and created their own versions. For example, “Altn Kizlar” was Turkish Golden Girls, just not in Miami, but in Istanbul. How about these beautiful Chilean ladies? Their show was called “Los Años Dorados”, so, I guess they were living in the Golden Years of their lives.

Representing Africa, I would like to introduce “Sukkar Ziada” ladies from Egypt. With their “extra sugar”, I am sure they all have sweet lives, like four Cleopatras enjoying nectars of fruit… I find their colorful costumes quite lovely!

Four dames living on the coast of Sussex, England, were captured as “Brighton Belles.” In Spain, “together but not revolted” Chicas enjoyed their life together in the show “Juntas, pero no revuletas.” One of the Catalan women was portrayed as a <dissipated and a man-eater>; well, I guess cougars are everywhere in the world…

“Girl Power” is so appreciated and so refreshing regardless of where you are from. And, now, I am ready to say to all my girlfriends, in Morocco, in the US, in Japan, in India, and in Hawaii, in EU…  “Thank you for being a friend!”

Thank you for being a friend!”

“Are you a fantastic horse?” – Tbourida Experience

June 23, 2026

I have been studying French as well as Darija, since moving to Morocco. One of the very first words I learned in French was “Cheval”, which means horse. Why? Because, well, it was thanks to Duolingo. They were trying to teach me “Are you a horse?” in French, but, I have never ever had an opportunity to use this sentence in real life. Maybe I will, someday?

Anyway, there was a traditional Moroccan tournament centered around horses taking place nearby. Of course, I got interested – perhaps I might be able to ask “are you a horse?” question, finally. Soooo, three girls from different countries (Ireland, Belgium and Japan) went to check out this “Tbourida”! The Hassan II Trophy features 18 groups (called Sorbas) from 18 different districts of Morocco, competing in equestrian techniques. Unfortunately, the horses at the tournament looked very concentrated and professional, there was no chance that I could ask “Are you a horse?” to them.

We arrived at the Dar es Salam complex just after a 20-minute drive. Parking and admission were free! It was a sunny Saturday afternoon, so there was a huge audience, bustling with families. Many stalls like a “Fan Zone” invited us, and we were immediately surrounded by beautiful horses as soon as we entered. So exciting!

About 15 minutes before the official tournament, there was a guest group performing some sorts of acrobatics. They seemed to be from another country (maybe Spain?) and they surely helped the audience prepare for the big tournament — very electric.

Then, the tournament began. Each Sorbas consisted of 11 members. At the center was the leader called Moqaddam, who normally started by giving signals and prayers through the microphone. With his perfect guidance, the Sorbas aim to move as one with harmony. That’s the whole concept of this game!

How do they get points to win? Apparently, there are three main important pillars to be judged. First, “Hada”: the quality of presentation itself. The team’s beautiful & traditional costumes, as well as the bridles and headgear on the horses are quite elaborate.

Second, “El Marek”: the team’s movements. The 11 horses must walk/run/gallop in a synchronized way, as if they are on a single line. The way each person handles their musket guns also needs to be united.

The third one is “La Talka”: at the end of the run, they all fire their muskets (either into the air or towards the ground), and it seems to be very important that the sound of the gunshots is synchronized.

Wow… quite challenging, isn’t it? and the sound of gunshot is REALLY something! These particular equestrian performances, which have been held since the 15th century, are truly awe-inspiring when seen up close. It’s no wonder they are designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage! By the way, the name “Tbourida” is said to originate from the Arabic word “barud,” meaning “gunpowder.” This tournament is also known as “Fantasia” – because it IS fantastic!

Speaking of fantastic, my friend brought watermelon for snacks! It was sweet, cold and delicious. Being able to enjoy these traditional events with fabulous friends, was definitely FANTASTIC!

Eid-al-Adha blessing in our neighborhood

May 28, 2026

Friendly reminder: some photos include images of animal sacrifice (including blood)

Eid al-Adha is here! Last year, taking into account conditions such as water shortages for irrigation, many people in Morocco chose to observe the holiday without performing the traditional animal sacrifice. Since there was no such royal decree this year, the celebration is happening full heat!

Starting two or three days before Eid, the bleating of sheep and goats could be heard drifting in from all directions. It seems the animals were transported from farms to the city and loaded onto trucks. I learned that the sheep and goats come in two varieties: those raised domestically in Morocco and those imported from abroad (such as from Portugal or Spain). Apparently, the Moroccan-raised animals end up at a higher price.

Eid al-Adha is one of the two major holidays in the Islamic faith. It is celebrated by ritually slaughtering animal, usually a sheep or goat; this act serves as an offering to God, and the meat is distributed not only among one’s own family but also shared as charity with the poor. In our apartment building, the neighbors on the floor below us were performing the sacrifice.

I noticed something hanging down from the rooftop as well. Before long, the aroma of barbecue began wafting in from various directions. It was our first time witnessing the festivities of the Eid-al-Adah, and I found the whole experience quite fascinating.

I had been told that “all the shops and restaurants will be closed,” but the cafés and eateries in the Agdal neighborhood were actually open for business as usual. People were enjoying their coffee and mint tea, and many were dressed up for the occasion; looking even more stylish than usual, wearing traditional Moroccan attire. And so, my husband joined them!

Amidst all this activity, the busiest place of all seemed to be the butcher shops! Presumably, people were bringing in the livestock they had slaughtered at home to have the meat cut and prepared. During this rush, they even had “waiting chairs” for customers. The butchers looked incredibly busy, working hard until late into the night.

It was reported in the news that His Majesty, King Mohammed VI, also performed the traditional rituals in his palace in Rabat. Eid al-Adha is a holiday celebrated by the entire family and community together; I’m hoping that next year, we might get “adopted” into someone’s family so we can celebrate it with them!

I am so thankful.

May 9, 2026

You might have noticed that I have been blogging more frequently in the last few days. There is a reason: my husband was hospitalized for five days, and I had more time to sit down and work with my laptop.

During those five days, my husband underwent surgery and is now recovering very well. Today, he was finally able to return home! Humdulillah! The doctors, nurses, managers, security staff at the clinic… everyone was so kind and professional. I was so touched by them. They always greeted me with warm smiles, and made sure everything was okay. They were angels – made me cry.

I won’t mention the details of procedures and such, but I thought it would be worth sharing a little bit about our hospitalization experience in Morocco (to especially those who don’t live here).

We were given a very comfortable private room with a nice bathroom. The cost was 600 MAD per night (about $65), which was without insurance. There was even a cozy sofa that could turn into a day bed for me to stay overnight, but I didn’t. The clinic was only 3 minutes away from our place, so I just went back and forth as necessary.

But, to keep him from feeling lonely sleeping alone, our teddy, Hoover, stayed with my hubby. The blanket in the room was so fluffy, it reminded me of something you’d find in a Japanese Minshuku (Japanese style bed & breakfast). Matched well with our Hoover.

The painting in the room was so Moroccan, so cute!

I am sure you would be interested in seeing “hospital food” in Morocco. A very “home-cooked” style with gentle flavors. Always comes with Moroccan bread, Khubs. My husband LOVES coffee, and was glad that there was this coffee package in the breakfast tray. The little pot contained warm milk, and you can put the coffee in there, which becomes NousNous (Moroccan latte).

Every time I walked back and forth, this beautiful tunnel of Jacaranda trees encouraged me to stay positive.

Conversations with the nurses were either in French or Darija, which was a great learning experience for me. There was one nurse who kept on talking to us in Spanish though. I was glad that I took a Spanish class when we lived in Barcelona.

Our dear friends here and the US, our neighbors, my choir members, caretakers of our apartment building and around streets… thank you so much for reaching out to us, and sending us good wishes.

It was somewhat unexpected but definitely a valuable experience. I was deeply impressed by the quality of care we were able to receive in Moroccan healthcare system, and the high skills of the people working there. And their amazing warmth… so so thankful.

My husband is back home now, and I am feeling relieved. I think I’ll finally be able to get some sleep. These past five days have reminded me of simple but important things: to cherish each day, to give lots of hugs to the people we love, and never forget kindness and gratitude. God is great.

Beautiful Agadir – and Beautifully aging me…

March 3, 2026

Let’s write about our time in Agadir.

In January, it rained almost every day in Rabat, which we were happy about (Morocco really needed rain). But, we heard about this “sunny city” of Agadir, and why not? for a weekend trip. It took 1 hour flight to reach Agadir, very well known for its beautiful coastal resort.

The first thing I noticed when we got off the domestic flight was, that Agadir airport was full of foreigners! That was because we landed about the same time as flights from the UK and Germany, I think. But oh boy, it was the first “Are we still in Morocco?” experience.

Our goal for this trip was to “seek out the sun and just chill.” So, we stayed at the Iberostar Resort on the beach, using <all-inclusive accommodation>. My husband and I are not quite the “all-inclusive” kind of people, but there is always a first time for everything, non? The second “Are we still in Morocco?” experience happened once we checked in at the hotel. Most of the guests were caucasians, wandering around with beer and wine in hand, and lounging by the pool in bikinis and such.

Now, this <all-inclusive accommodation> means a luxurious hotel buffet for three meals a day and never ending snacks and (also never ending) drinks, always available. AND, the drinks mean, anything including alcohol! I don’t drink alcohol, but I know someone who enjoyed it 😎. You can also participate in a variety of activities, such as aerobics, spa service, archery, and the kids’club. I guess it’s kind of like getting on a cruise ship – except we are not on a boat.

All Inclusive

To tell you the truth, we didn’t take advantage of all these services. But, we surely enjoyed our long daily walk on the beach every day. The beach was bustling with activities, with people doing windsurfing and such. The promenade is nicely flat and long, so organized. Even the hanuts (Moroccan convenience stores) are well organized, too. You know where this place reminds me of? Marseille.

If you head towards the three words on the hill, “Allah, Al-Watan, Al-Malik (God, Homeland, King)” you’ll find the Kasbah (old city walls). You can also take a gondola lift to the top of the hill, which gives you the nicest view of the city.

On the top, you can visit the old city which was destroyed by the 1960 earthquake. It shows us how they used to live; Muslims and Jews coexisted peacefully here. They were wise – we should definitely learn from them.

The current souk with mosque. Since it was redeveloped after the earthquake as well, it felt very organized. The city’s infrastructure overall is also very organized and clean. Agadir is surely a city friendly to pedestrians.

Last but not least, my third “Are we still in Morocco?” moment was the “nightlife” at the hotel. Yes, they provide “Broadway-style” dinner shows with very “Broadway-style” costumes. Almost half-naked male dancers, and very sexy costumes for female dancers. I hadn’t seen these types of entertainment for a while living in Morocco (with rather conservative standard), so it was a surprise. Sorry if I sound like an old, conservative woman – well, I guess I am becoming one (and am proud of it).

To be triangle or not to be triangle, that is the question.

August 11, 2025

In Morocco, you can find “The Laughing Cow” cheese everywhere. It seems like this joyful cow became an essential part of Moroccan breakfast or snack time. I am sure you have all seen this cheese somewhere. It’s been distributed to so many countries by the Bel Group in France since 1921. That makes this ‘laughing cow’ older than Mickey Mouse (who was born in 1928) .

You can feel assured that the cheese made from such a smiley cow must be delicious, non? Well, the original design of the cow is a bit questionable, but those were the days. Speaking of ‘questionable’, I am not sure about the life-size mascot either…

French is widely used in Morocco, therefore, the cheese is named “La Vache qui rit.” I have been a fan of this logo way before moving here; I actually own Vache qui rit earrings and a T-shirt, and I ADORE them (thanks to my hubby!). Especially, these earrings have become kind of like my identity; many people stop by and talk to me when I wear these 🙂 If you look closer, though, it is written “The Laughing Cow” because they were made in the US. And it’s not the original flavor (that’d be in a blue box), but orange (cheddar flavor). Okay, too many details…

I came across these fun designs of La Vache qui rit while I was shopping. The cows are wearing a variety of Moroccan hats! And each package design features a different region of this amazing country. SO, I HAD TO buy all 4 of them. Pourquoi pas? Why not? Thanks to Google Translate, I could see what these designs represent: “Treasure of the South,” “Great Atlantic Coast,” “Jewel of the North,” and “Authentic East.” This is a cheese with some poetic attitude.

Too big for earrings.

Scanning the barcode also leads to a game for children. Fun! Apparently, there was a “Cow with a Hat” contest, and the results showed that the one wearing the Moroccan cap came out on top. I love this kind of customer interaction. I am moooooved.

The Bell group sells cheese and other related products in 130 countries. In Japan, it started in 1983, and I’m sure you know the “BelCube” if you are reading this blog in the land of the rising sun. Now, why cubes? when triangle wedges are the norm in other countries? Is it the size? Oh, maybe it’s because Japan is a serious country, so they decided that cheese needs to be a bit “square“? If you know the reason behind the cheese shape, please let me know. I was impressed that they have 10 different flavors – chorizo, onion, prosciutto, scallop, blue, cheddar, camembert, tomato, olive, and creamy. Wow.

By the way, there’s apparently an event in Zurich titled “La Vache qui LIT” (‘lit’ means ‘read’ in French). Yup, it’s a reading contest for children aged 8 to 12, with a ‘dad-joke’ title. Also, in the town of Lons-le-Saunier in France, there is an annual cycling race sponsored by the Bel Company. I don’t do sport cycling, but I do want that uniform.

Speaking of Lons-le-Saunier, it is the home of “La Maison de la Vache qui rit,” a museum dedicated to our beloved laughing cow. Visiting there is definitely on my bucket list. I might even be able to buy some underwear for my husband (not sure he wants it though) in their gift shop. Inshallah.

There is no such thing as “Too much meat” at El Aarjate

August 9, 2025

First, apologies to all the vegans & vegetarians. Today’s post is deeply about meat. 🍖

Selma-chan previously told us about a great Moroccan barbecue spot. Today, thanks to her arrangement, we decided to try it out! Selma, Badr, Alex, my husband and I took a 30-minute drive. Alex came all the way from Casablanca to join this “meat-eating-adventure”!!! See, he is that cool, and, to make him even cooler, he is a Natto-loving guy (I am so going to share my Natto with him)!

We arrived in an area called El Aarjate, a huge “truck-stop” 🚛 kind of place that popped up along the highway. The “touting” began even in the parking lot. I love this kind of “truck-stop” atmosphere. In Japan, it is called the “Service Area” and I have fond memories of our family vacations as a child in those places. We would spend summers in Karuizawa or Hakuba Village in Nagano Prefecture, and we often stopped at service areas along the way to eat ice cream🍦… Good times.

So nostalgic! – Petit hôtel Vert Pré.

So, our mission for today was, simply, to EAT MEAT! With Moroccan barbecue style, Chwa, of course. It’s not fancy, there is no tablecloth with a waiter with bow tie. But, it is the best kind of barbecue experience you can get! Just so that you know, mint tea is a must, even in a place like this. Humdulillah.

I took a peek at the grill and sampled a little piece of meat, generously coated in cumin powder. So delicious! Okay, I could tell, we were in the right place! When I asked the gents if I could take a photo 📸, they said, “Sure, go ahead, and you should grill also!” Alright then, if you say so👩🏻‍🍳.

We were a group of Moroccans🇲🇦, Chinese🇨🇳, Japanese🇯🇵, and Americans🇺🇸 with a hint of Swedish🇸🇪. We were like members of Petite United Nations 🌎 and were having a great time chatting, and then… THE MEAT arrived! A TON OF MEAT! 🙌

The grilled beef skewers and the lamb meat in foil were definitely “melt-in-your-mouth”, and Selma-chan’s favorite, the grilled liver skewers with the fat pieces rolled around them, were incredibly juicy. We had grilled tomatoes & onions as a side dish. Oh, by the way, the bread was served as a plate, as a fork, as a knife, and maybe as a napkin. How can we live without bread???🥳

Our stomachs and our hearts were so filled! Thank you for driving, Badr-kun!

Now, today, August 9th, marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki. Three days before, on the 6th, Hiroshima was bombed as well. Sure, 80 years is a long time, but it still gives me a lot of pain to think of all those who suffered from the bombings and were exposed to radiation. Of course, it should never happen again. Never.

Yup, we attacked them all! 完食!

Five of us were born in different countries, from different upbringings in different cultures. Yet, we were able to enjoy delicious barbecue together in a little village in Morocco. After 80 years of those devastating historical events, I cannot stop but think that a society where we can co-exist regardless of where you are from, should not be taken for granted. Especially with good food and good laughters. No more atomic bombs, no more war. These are the thoughts I had while sucking on my oily, greasy fingers. Gochisousama-deshita!🙏

“Do you like my hat?” or “Do you like my bread?”

June 26, 2025

Recently, I learned a new Japanese word. It’s “Rebe-chi レベチ”– it means “different level”, in other words, it’s an abbreviated term to describe something so amazing, or so outstanding, that you might think it’s at the next level. Japanese people love to shorten the words, so “Reberu(level) Chigau (different)” became “Rebe-chi.” Other creative versions include, “Dan-chi” for something one step above, or “Jige-chi” for being in a different league. They are all meant to complement something or someone, but, I don’t really feel comfortable using them… only because I am from the older generation, I guess.

Anyway, I previously wrote about <the world’s largest strawberry shortcake🍰> made by a “Rebe-chi” pastissier from Morocco🇲🇦. But, today, I would like to introduce an incredibly “Rebe-chi” boulangerie (bakery/baked goods shop) near our apartment!

Amoud! It sure has a kind of lavish ambience, so I had been a little intimidated, to be honest, for a while. It took us a few months to actually go in and try their goodies…

Tada! Oh my, the brioche, croissants, and the loaf of hard bread… everything was delicious and top-notch! Clearly, I now have a problem – Amoud is located too close to our apartment.

The qualities of Moroccan breads, any baked goods, or cakes and tarts, are all really high. Rebe-chi, Dan-chi, & Jige-chi 🤩!  Perhaps it’s because the foundation of traditional Moroccan breadmaking, which is already outstanding, has been fused with some new knowledge and techniques by the French during their ruling period…?

When it comes to bread, my husband and I seem to have different preferences. He likes more crispy loaves with some seeds in it. Something which goes with cheese. Very “white people” bread. Kind of bread that reminds me of the iceberg in fjord, and is strong enough to hit someone. I tend to choose brioche-like bread with a sweet taste and moist texture, that I can probably continue to eat even after I get dentures🦷 (I hope that doesn’t happen – Inshallah. 🙏).

We were laughing at these “bread personalities” one morning, then I suddenly found myself playing with “Go, Dog. Go!”🐶 story (which we used to read with our children when they were young).

Dog.

It was just a silly morning – but I love silly mornings. Hamdulillah. 🙏

”Watermelon Consumption Machine” in Rabat

June 25, 2025

Summer has come in Rabat! That means, watermelon season has arrived 🍉!

I LOVE watermelon. In fact, when I was pregnant, my husband gave me the nickname, “Watermelon Consumption Machine”, as I would eat watermelon every day during the summer, or, in the US, not in the summer also (a mystery of the US food distribution system). My husband knew that eating watermelon would make me happy, so he would always make sure to have cut watermelon in our fridge when I was pregnant (or when I am not pregnant). Such a sweet gesture…🥹 We owe many watermelons for our almost 30 years of happy marriage💒. Humdlilla.🙏

Moroccan watermelons… in Darija, it’s called Delaah, are DA BEST! Sweet, juicy, true-to-the-motherland flavor. There are seeds, but Mashi Mushikili (No problem).  They are just so delicious & inexpensive, and, are always available at our neighborhood hanut (moroccan version of seven-eleven), so it’s very convenient to purchase & carry home, even if it’s this size – 13kg (28lbs)!

These Moroccan watermelons’ “marketing style” come differently. On our road trip, I often saw “Standing Watermelons” to attract customers on streets. I was very curious how they would make watermelons stand – aha! egg cartons on the bottom! How about this pretty wild-looking, “Fresh off the Farm Watermelon” appeal? You will have to do a lot of trimming & cleaning, but I bet they taste superb 😻.

My husband makes “watermelon juice.” It is a delightful red juice, and I just feel loved when I get to sip a glass of it. I often add chopped watermelon pieces to our salad – they go really well with feta cheese and mint leaves, I think. See, if we have a 13kg baby, we would have to consume a lot in various ways, for a loooong period of time (and I am not complaining at all!)

Apparently, watermelon’s ample amounts of potassium and magnesium help you reduce stress. Also, its antioxidants help to prevent the onset of heart diseases. Something called “carotenoid” ensures good health in your eyesight. Furthermore, lots of vitamins, especially A & C in this fruit, are great supporters of weight loss. Yes, I am reading WebMD for all this information, but they all seem perfect 🤩 for perimenopause women like me! I DO have faith in watermelons (they helped me produce two amazing humans into this world after all), and I am sticking to my faith💪.

Most importantly, watermelon is a sign of love from my husband to his “Watermelon Consumption Machine.” This red color of watermelon juice must mean “passion❤️‍🔥” – yes?
