お散歩でみかける「この木なんの木気になる木」シリーズ
We attend Darija language class once a week at a café in Hay Riad. It’s only about a 10-minute taxi ride away from our home, but we always enjoy walking to our class. It’s better for our health, and walking for one hour on a pleasant morning is such a joy!
毎週１回、ダリジャ語のクラスに参加しています。タクシーに乗ったら１０分ほどの場所なのですが、健康のため＆気持ちの良い朝のため、雨が降っていない限りいつも歩いて向かっております。
While walking, we try to speak in French as much as possible (for my practice), therefore, our conversation is very simple :). That’s okay, because we then have plenty of opportunities to look at “interesting trees” along the way. We had a lot of rain this winter here, so perhaps the trees seem extra healthy and vibrant.
約1時間のウォーキング。できるだけフランス語を使ったりしてのんびりと、、、。そして私の「気になる木」をチェックしつつ、です。今年は雨が多かった冬、だからか、木々もとっても元気そうです。
First tree to introduce – this is a Cockspour Coral Tree. Yes, Cockspour. What on earth is it? The flowers have a rather unique shape, and apparently they resemble the cockspour of a rooster’s foot.
まずは、この真っ赤なお花の木。こちらCockspour Coral Tree, 日本語名は「アメリカディゴ」というらしい。このお花、なかなかユニークな形をしていますが、これがニワトリの足にある蹴爪ににている（Cockspour)ということらしいんですね。
Of course, I was curious what the real cockspour looked like. Here you go, it’s that pointed little thing sticking out on the back of the leg. Hmm. The shape certainly does resemble it, don’t you think?
気になったのでニワトリさんの足をズームでみてみます。この後ろ足部分にヒョコンととんがってでている、これだそうです。赤くはないけど、ふむふむ、形は確かに似ています。
This tree is apparently the national flower of Argentina and Uruguay. And, in Japan, it’s the prefectural flower of Kagoshima. The passionate colors of the tropics are quite lovely, and I am thankful that I got to learn something new – a body part of the rooster.
この木はアルゼンチンやウルグアイの国花だそうです。そして、日本では鹿児島の県花らしい。情熱的な南国の色、なかなかすてき。この木のおかげで、「ニワトリの蹴爪」というものを学びました。
Next up, the orchid tree. I always thought that orchids only grew in fancy pods, intended to be given as gifts or something. But, apparently, they can also grow into such tall trees. We saw white and purple-colored orchids along our path, creating a very elegant atmosphere.
おつぎはオーキッドツリー。蘭って、鉢に入ってご贈答に～的なイメージだったんですが、このような背の高い木にもなるんですね。私たちの歩く道には白と紫のオーキッドツリーがありまして、なんとも言えないお品のある雰囲気です。
Then we noticed a sweet pleasant fragrance coming near one of the mosques we passed. It is called the “Japanese Cheesewood Tree.” As the name suggests, it’s a tree native in Japan, and some people use these tree bushes for warding off evil spirits… interesting.
そして、甘い良い香りがしてきたなぁ、と思って出会ったのが、このJapanese Cheesewood Tree。ジャパニーズ！と言う名がついているだけ、日本古来の木だそうです。日本だとトビラと呼ばれていて、厄除け用にも使われるんだとか。
So, cheesewood. This is what I found out; if you break a branch of this tree, it smells like cheese. What kind of cheese? Raclette? Stilton? Gorgonzola?? Well, only one way to find out, I guess.
「なぜチーズウッド？」と調べたところ、枝を折るとチーズのような香りがするんだそうです。ちょっとやってみたいような。どんなチーズの種類なのかしら。
Another name for this tree is “Japanese Mock Orange Tree.” It is true that the flowers create some sort of sweet, orange-like fragrance, kind of like jasmine. I think I am going to stick with this smell, rather than cheese.
他の名前がJapanese Mock Oranger Tree と、＜Mock (フェイク）＞がついちゃうのが悲しいですが、確かにお花はオレンジのような、甘くて優しい良い香りを醸し出しています。わざわざ枝を折って匂いを嗅ぐ必要はないかと思います。
Finally, pomegranate blossoms! There are two types of fig flowers, and this one we saw, which looks a lot like carnation, doesn’t produce many fruits. The other type, however, can produce a lot of yummy fruits that we enjoy. I’ve added a photo of that flower as well.
最後に、ざくろのお花！いちじくには大きくわけて２種類の花があるそうで、私たちがみたのは何重にもなっているカーネーションのようなもの。この種類はあまりざくろの実は育たないそうです。もうひとつの種類でしたらガンガン実ができると言うことで、お写真を足しておきます。
I am not sure if I enjoy our walk to get to the class more, or the class itself. Either way, I feel so lucky to be able to have pleasant mornings with my husband!
