Dima Maghreb! Always Morocco! (Maybe, Japan, too)

頑張れモロッコチーム！（と、日本、アメリカ、スウェーデン・チーム！）

Are you all following the World Cup? My husband and I are pretty into it, especially for Morocco, Japan, the US, and Sweden teams. I love the surprises, though, like when teams from “known to be strong” countries are defeated or end up tied with “not so known to be strong” opponents.

みなさんもチェックしていますか、W杯？私たち夫婦もしっかり毎日チェックしておりますが、モロッコ、日本、アメリカ、そしてスウェーデンを応援しつつ、今まで「最強」とされていた国のチームが、あまり強そうでない（？）チームと同点になったり、ビックリを楽しんでおります。

Another fun thing for us is our hometown, Seattle, is hosting some matches! Our eldest son lives there, and he apparently goes to a few games. I heard the atmosphere in Seattle is absolutely exciting, and I can totally feel it! I will be honest; seeing familia cityscapes on the screen makes me a little bit homesick. Seattle, “the Emerald City” – I miss you!

私たちの故郷、シアトル市もゲームをホストしています。シアトル在住の長男は、いくつかゲームに足を運んでいる模様。懐かしい街並みなどが画面に映し出されると、正直、ちょっぴりホームシックな気持ちにも。エメラルド·シティと呼ばれるシアトル。懐かしいなぁ。

Rabat is also well immersed in the FIFA mode! Many of the games by our Atlas Lions (Moroccan team) start at 11pm, but cafés and restaurants stay open until very, very late – so that you can watch the game while sipping mint tea. We don’t have TV at home, but it’s really fun to be able to hear cheers from outside, and we can easily get the “general idea” of the game’s progress 🙂 Who needs TV subscriptions, when all our neighbors can tell us what’s happening! 

ラバトもしっかりワールドカップ一色！モロッコのチーム、『アトラス·ライオンズ』の試合の時は夜２３時からが多いのですが、カフェやレストランなどはちゃーんと試合観戦ができるように夜中までオープン状態。テレビのない私たち夫婦も、しっかりお出かけして観戦しておりますが、外出しなくても外から歓声が聞こえてくるので、試合の大体の流れがわかる、、、という面白さ。

These are some fun decorations found at our local shopping mall – Arribat Center. The Canadian team’s theme was quite inviting, with a beach theme. The moose is very cute (and looks powerful, too).

地元のショッピングモール、アリバット·センター内も、W杯にまつわるデコレーションで盛り上がってます。こちらはカナダチームのデコレーション。なかなかムース君がかわいいですよね。

How about the American team? I guess the image of the US is “Coca-Cola” and “popcorn”… The eagle is awfully AI-driven, but I still take it.

そして、アメリカチーム。やっぱり、アメリカのイメージって＜コカコーラ＞と＜ポップコーン＞なのかしら。このイーグルのAIたっぷりなデザイン、すごい。

I see the FIFA Trophy motif everywhere. Did you know that this trophy is actually the “second edition”? So, the first one, adorned with a beautiful statue of the Greek goddess of victory, NIKE, was created by a French sculptor. This “first generation” trophy is kept in Brazil. However, it is actually a replica. Why? It’s been stolen numerous times (apparently when the Nazis tried to steal its gold, an Italian man hid it inside a shoebox, under his bed, to save it!) and it still hasn’t been found…

FIFAのトロフィーのモチーフもいろんなところで見かけるようになりました。ちなみに、このトロフィーは、実は２代目なんだそうです。こちらが、初代のものでして、フランスの彫刻家によって美しい勝利の女神、そう、Nike (ニーケ）が装飾されています。実は現在ブラジルに残されているこの初代トロフィーはレプリカだそう。何度も盗難にあったあげく（なんと、ナチス軍がゴールド目当てで奪おうとした時は、とあるイタリア人男性が自宅のベッドの下に隠して難を逃れたとか）、現在まだ見つかってないらしいのです。

Oh, by the way – Nike’s distinctive “Swoosh!” logo; can you see what they got inspiration from? Yup, these wings of the Greek goddess surely express power and victory, don’t they?

ちなみに、ナイキ社のあの独特なSwooshと呼ばれるロゴ。こちらはこのギリシャ神話の女神様の勇敢な羽の動きからインスピレーションを受けたとか、、、？

The design of the second generation of the trophy, which has been passed down since 1974, was crafted by Italian designers. Made of 18-karat gold with malachite inlay, it’s quite large, standing 36.8 centimeters tall and weighing 6175 grams. Incidentally, only members of the winning team and heads of state of countries visited on the “Trophy Tour” are allowed to touch (or kiss, maybe?) this trophy.

そして２代目、1974年から現在も受け継がれているこのトロフィーのデザインは、イタリアの彫刻家の手によるもの。マラカイトも施された１８金でできていて、高さは36.8センチ、重さは6175グラム、とまぁなかなかの大きさです。ちなみに、このトロフィーに触れる（よくキスなどもしてますね）のは、優勝国チームメンバーと、『トロフィーツアー』が訪れる先の国家元首のみなのだそうです。

In the midst of a complex global situation, with some saying a Third World War could break out at any moment, watching the World Cup matches makes me keenly aware of the importance of world peace. No matter which team wins, I believe the greatest champions are those who can maintain the peace in this world.

複雑な世界情勢の中、第三次世界大戦もいつはじまってもおかしくないなんて言われていますが、スポーツを通して競い合うW杯を観戦していると、平和の大切さをひしひしと感じますよね。どの国が優勝したとしても、本当の意味での1番の優者は、世界平和を保てる人たちなんだと思います。

But… still… I want Morocco or Japan to win. “Dima Maghreb!”& “Dima Japan!”　でも、やっぱりモロッコか日本に勝ってほしいので、、、がんばれえええ！

“Are you a fantastic horse?” – Tbourida Experience

モロッコのファンタジアへようこそ

I have been studying French as well as Darija, since moving to Morocco. One of the very first words I learned in French was “Cheval”, which means horse. Why? Because, well, it was thanks to Duolingo. They were trying to teach me “Are you a horse?” in French, but, I have never ever had an opportunity to use this sentence in real life. Maybe I will, someday?

モロッコに越してきてから、ダリジャ語と共にフランス語を勉強していますが、始めた頃に1番記憶に残ったのが馬、Chevalという単語でした。なぜか？Duolingoに出てくるセンテンスでこういうのがあったんです：『あなたは馬ですか？』この文章を実際に使えたことは一度もありません。

Anyway, there was a traditional Moroccan tournament centered around horses taking place nearby. Of course, I got interested – perhaps I might be able to ask “are you a horse?” question, finally. Soooo, three girls from different countries (Ireland, Belgium and Japan) went to check out this “Tbourida”! The Hassan II Trophy features 18 groups (called Sorbas) from 18 different districts of Morocco, competing in equestrian techniques. Unfortunately, the horses at the tournament looked very concentrated and professional, there was no chance that I could ask “Are you a horse?” to them.

さて、馬（Cheval）がメインのモロッコならではのトーナメントが近くで行われており、お友達ガールズ３人で行ってみました！The Hassan II Trophyと呼ばれる大会では、モロッコの１８地区からやってきたグループ（Sorbas)が馬術を競いあいます。『あなたは馬ですか？』と聞くチャンスはありません。

We arrived at the Dar es Salam complex just after a 20-minute drive. Parking and admission were free! It was a sunny Saturday afternoon, so there was a huge audience, bustling with families. Many stalls like a “Fan Zone” invited us, and we were immediately surrounded by beautiful horses as soon as we entered. So exciting!

約２０分の運転で到着したDar Es Salamコンプレックス。駐車場も入場料も無料！ということで、週末のこの日はたくさんの家族連れで賑わっていました。ファンゾーンのような屋台などもあり、入場してすぐに出会う美しいお馬さんにも囲まれ、気持ちはもりあがります！

About 15 minutes before the official tournament, there was a guest group performing some sorts of acrobatics. They seemed to be from another country (maybe Spain?) and they surely helped the audience prepare for the big tournament — very electric.

トーナメント１５分前。エンターテイメントなのでしょう、こんな風に雑技をしちゃうグループ、すごいなぁ。たぶん、モロッコの人たちではなさそうですが、会場は大盛り上がりでした。

Then, the tournament began. Each Sorbas consisted of 11 members. At the center was the leader called Moqaddam, who normally started by giving signals and prayers through the microphone. With his perfect guidance, the Sorbas aim to move as one with harmony. That’s the whole concept of this game!

そしてトーナメント開始！それぞれSorbasは１１人構成。中心にはリーダー的存在のMoqaddemさんがいて、マイクを通して合図やお祈りをしてはじまります。何よりも、グループが一心同体で動くのが目標のようです。

How do they get points to win? Apparently, there are three main important pillars to be judged. First, “Hada”: the quality of presentation itself. The team’s beautiful & traditional costumes, as well as the bridles and headgear on the horses are quite elaborate.

どうやって審査されるか？基本的には３つのポイントがチェックされるようです。1つ目はHada: プレゼンテーション性の高さ。チームの美しく厳かなコスチュームはモロッコの伝統的なもの、そしてお馬さんが装飾している頭絡·馬勒も審査の対象なのだそう。

Second, “El Marek”: the team’s movements. The 11 horses must walk/run/gallop in a synchronized way, as if they are on a single line. The way each person handles their musket guns also needs to be united.

2つ目はEl Marek: チームの動きそのもの。１１頭の馬達がまるで一つの線にそって歩く／走る、そして、それぞれが持っているマスケット銃の操り方も、ハーモナイズされていないといけない、と。

The third one is “La Talka”: at the end of the run, they all fire their muskets (either into the air or towards the ground), and it seems to be very important that the sound of the gunshots is synchronized.

3つ目はLa Talka: 走行の最後にはそろって銃を打つのですが（空に向けたり、地面に向けたり）、その音も同じタイミングであることが大切らしい。

Wow… quite challenging, isn’t it? and the sound of gunshot is REALLY something! These particular equestrian performances, which have been held since the 15th century, are truly awe-inspiring when seen up close. It’s no wonder they are designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage! By the way, the name “Tbourida” is said to originate from the Arabic word “barud,” meaning “gunpowder.” This tournament is also known as “Fantasia” – because it IS fantastic!

という、なかなか難しい内容のトーナメントです。銃を打ち放す音がすごいのなんのって、、、。15世紀から続けられている騎馬演舞、さすがユネスコ無形文化財に指定されているだけあって、間近でみるとかなり圧倒されます！Tbouridaというネーミングは、「火薬」を意味するアラビア語の「バルード」に由来しているそうですが、またの名を「Fantasia」とも呼ばれています。そう、お馬さんも騎手達もみんなファンタスティックなんですもん。

Speaking of fantastic, my friend brought watermelon for snacks! It was sweet, cold and delicious. Being able to enjoy these traditional events with fabulous friends, was definitely FANTASTIC!

ファンタスティックといえば、お友達が持ってきてくれたスイカ！甘くて冷たくて、美味しかったあぁぁぁ。こういった伝統行事をローカルの人たちと一緒に楽しめる事も、本当にファンタスティック、でした。

“Where there is Harmony, there is Peace”

平和な心はハーモニーから生まれます

Around this time last year, I auditioned for a local choir and, luckily, I became a member. For the past year, I’ve been practicing as a member of The Harmonize Choir, and last week and the week before, we had two concerts to finalize this season. In this blog, I’d like to share a little bit through pictures and short videos.

ちょうど去年の今頃、地元のクワイヤーのオーディションがありまして、幸運なことにメンバーになれました。それから1年、The Harmonize Choir の一員として練習に参加してきましたが、先週＆先々週、2度のコンサートがありまして、、、今回は、その様子を少し動画や写真でご紹介させていただきます。

The first concert was at St. Pierre Cathedral, a Catholic Church near Medina in Rabat. It was a roughly 90-minute show with a large audience. Singing all 15 songs without looking at the sheet music was quite a challenge for my perimenopausal brain… 😅

1度目のコンサートは、メディーナ近くにあるカトリック教会、St. Pierre Cathedral で。たくさんの観客の皆さんと一緒に、約９０分のショー。１５曲すべて楽譜をみないで歌う、というのは、メノポーズな脳みそにはかなりのチャレンジではありましたが、、、（笑）。

Our “choir colors” are white and beige. I don’t usually wear those colors, so I felt a bit ‘uneasy’ putting such pure & angelic colors on myself. But when we sang together, I forgot all about it! Choirs often choose black dresses or black suits, but this white/beige color scheme is quite nice, isn’t it?

白／ベージュが基本カラーなんです。あまりそういう色を着ない私は、ちょっと恥ずかしい気分。でもみんなで揃って歌えば、そんな気持ちは忘れちゃいます！黒いドレスやスーツで統一することが多いクワイヤーですが、この＜白／ベージュ＞な色合い、なかなか良いですよね。

Our conductor, Maestro Ghali-san, has an impressive background, having studied music at Berklee College of Music in Boston. The song with his solo was one of my favorites.

コンダクターであるマエストロ·ガリさんは、ボストンのバークリーでも音楽を学んだ素晴らしい経歴をお持ちです。彼のソロも入るパフォーマンス、私の大好きな曲のひとつでした。

The best accompanist, Madame Tatiana. She is a very talented musician and a very sweet lady!  

伴奏者のタティアナさん。彼女ご自身も素晴らしいミュージシャンなのですが、ハーモナイズ·クワイヤーにとって、なくてはならない存在！

The concert ended with a fun song titled “Dance!” It’s a song that requires “multitasking” as it involves singing AND dancing (well, just clapping…really 👏). This is the kind of moment when both the singers and the audience can enjoy themselves together – and I loved it!

最後は「ダンス！」というタイトルの楽しい曲で終了。歌と一緒に踊り（手を叩くだけですが、、、）もするという、”高技術”が求められる（笑）曲。歌ってるいる私たちも、オーディエンスの方達も一緒になって楽しめるひととき。

Our second concert was held inside this magnificent building: The Mohammed 6th Tower, where the Waldorf Astoria Hotel recently opened. Just being able to visit and go inside the hotel was a great experience, but we were invited to sing for a special “Employee Appreciation” event.

2度目のコンサートは、なんとこのタワーの中で。Waldrof Astoriaホテルが最近オープンしたばかりのMohamed 6th Tower。全てが美しく、全てが新しいこのホテル内で、従業員の方達を激励するイベントがあり、私たちのクワイヤーはそちらでのエンターテイメントとして参加しました。

We got to see some of the rooms of the upper floors… absolutely gorgeous! And the view was spectacular! Of course, the prices are also incredibly ‘spectacular’, so we probably won’t be staying there – but I’d love to try the restaurants one day.

高層階のお部屋もみせてもらいましたが、、、すっごーくゴージャス！もちろん、お値段もすっごーくゴージャスなので、お泊まりすることはないかも、ですが、レストランなど行ってみたいですねぇ。

The event also included a wonderful “cocktail hour,” where we enjoyed delicious cakes and snacks. We all felt like VIPs!

イベントでは、こんなに素敵な「カクテルタイム」もあり、美味しいケーキやスナックをいただきました。クワイヤーのメンバーの1人がこちらのホテルで働いている、というご縁、素晴らしかったです。

After moving to Morocco, I was a little sad about not being able to sing in my home church choir, but joining the Harmonize Choir really was one of the best things I did. The songs we sing in this choir include a lot of gospel and pop hymns, so it really gives me a chance to praise God through singing. I’m also incredibly grateful for meeting all the wonderful members, for working together towards the goal of putting on a concert, and for them accepting a foreigner like me. 

モロッコに来てから、教会でのクワイヤーで歌うことができないのがちょっと寂しかったのですが、Harmonize Choirで歌う曲はゴスペルやポップな聖歌なども多く、私にとっては歌を通して神様への賛美ができる嬉しい時間なんです。そして、メンバーのみなさんと知り合えたこと、一緒に「コンサート」という目標に向かって頑張ってきたこと、私のような’ガイジン’も受け入れてくれたこと、全てに感謝でいっぱいです。

Eid-al-Adha blessing in our neighborhood

犠牲祭を迎えました

Eid al-Adha is here! Last year, taking into account conditions such as water shortages for irrigation, many people in Morocco chose to observe the holiday without performing the traditional animal sacrifice. Since there was no such royal decree this year, the celebration is happening full heat!

Eid al Adha がやってきました！去年は灌漑などの状況を踏まえて、動物を犠牲することはなく過ごした方が多かったモロッコ。今年はそのような国王からのお達しはなかったため、Eidの２～３日前から、どこからともなく聞こえてくる羊さんやヤギさんの声が聞こえてきました。

Starting two or three days before Eid, the bleating of sheep and goats could be heard drifting in from all directions. It seems the animals were transported from farms to the city and loaded onto trucks. I learned that the sheep and goats come in two varieties: those raised domestically in Morocco and those imported from abroad (such as from Portugal or Spain). Apparently, the Moroccan-raised animals end up at a higher price.

農家から街へやってくる時はトラックなどにのせられているようです。そして、羊さん＆やぎさんは、国産のものと海外から輸入（ポルトガルやスペインなど）のものがあるそうで、モロッコ産の方がお値段は高めなのだそう。

Eid al-Adha is one of the two major holidays in the Islamic faith. It is celebrated by ritually slaughtering animal, usually a sheep or goat; this act serves as an offering to God, and the meat is distributed not only among one’s own family but also shared as charity with the poor. In our apartment building, the neighbors on the floor below us were performing the sacrifice.

イスラム教の中で２大祝祭のひとつ、犠牲祭とも呼ばれているEid al Adha。羊や山羊などを屠殺して、神に捧げつつ、家族内だけでなく、貧しい人たちにも施されてお祝いされるんですね。我がアパートでも、下の階の方が屠殺しておりました。

I noticed something hanging down from the rooftop as well. Before long, the aroma of barbecue began wafting in from various directions. It was our first time witnessing the festivities of the Eid-al-Adah, and I found the whole experience quite fascinating.

近くのアパートでは、屋上でなにかつる下がっているものがあったり。しばらくすると、いろいろなところからバーベキューの匂いがしてきました。はじめて体験する犠牲祭の様子、なかなか興味ぶかかったです。

I had been told that “all the shops and restaurants will be closed,” but the cafés and eateries in the Agdal neighborhood were actually open for business as usual. People were enjoying their coffee and mint tea, and many were dressed up for the occasion; looking even more stylish than usual, wearing traditional Moroccan attire. And so, my husband joined them!

「お店やレストランが全部閉まるよ～」と言われていましたが、アグダル近辺のカフェなどは普通に営業しておりました。コーヒーやミントティーを楽しんでいる方達、いつもよりもおめかし、モロッコの民族衣装を身にまとっている方が多かったです。というわけで、旦那さんも！

Amidst all this activity, the busiest place of all seemed to be the butcher shops! Presumably, people were bringing in the livestock they had slaughtered at home to have the meat cut and prepared. During this rush, they even had “waiting chairs” for customers. The butchers looked incredibly busy, working hard until late into the night.

そんな中、とにかく忙しそうだったのがお肉屋さん！みなさん、各ご家庭で屠殺した家畜を持ってきて、カットしてもらいにくるんでしょうね。この時は「待合用椅子」まで登場。夜遅くまで大変そうでした。

It was reported in the news that His Majesty, King Mohammed VI, also performed the traditional rituals in his palace in Rabat. Eid al-Adha is a holiday celebrated by the entire family and community together; I’m hoping that next year, we might get “adopted” into someone’s family so we can celebrate it with them!

国王様もパレス内で儀式をされたようで、ニュースになっておりました。家族みんなでお祝いするEid al Adha, 来年はどなたかの家族にアダプトされたいなぁ。

Do you like my “golf” hat?

モロッコのゴルフ場へ

My husband loves playing golf. When we lived in Seattle, he even participated in monthly golf tournaments. We packed his golf clubs in our moving boxes to Morocco – yes, we’re eagerly awaiting their arrival…

旦那さんはゴルフが好きです。シアトルにいた頃は、毎月のゴルフトーナメントに参加していたくらい。モロッコへのお引越し荷物の中に「ゴルフクラブ一式」を入れたのですが、いつ到着するのかなぁ、と心待ちにしている毎日です。

Meanwhile, we learned that a PGA Championship tournament was being held at the Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Rabat, so we decided to take a look. It was also the perfect opportunity for our daily walking exercise 🙂

そんな中、ラバトのゴルフ場、Royal Golf Dar Es SalamでPGA チャンピオンによるトーナメントが開催されていることをしり、毎日のお散歩エクササイズがてら向かってみました。

The Hassan II Golf Trophy is celebrating its 50th year for the men’s division and its 29th year for the women’s division, the Lalla Meryem Cup. Admission as a spectator is free. We arrived around 9 AM (T-time is about that time), and, surprisingly, there weren’t many people. But strolling leisurely along the beautiful golf course, listening to the sound of “swoosh!” along with birds’ singing, was magical.

Hassan II Golf Trophyは、今年、男性の部が50年目、女性の部であるLalla Meryem Cupは29年目を迎えました。観客として行くのは無料。T-timeの朝９時ごろに到着したのですが、あんまり人はいませんでした。でも、美しいゴルフ場をのーんびりと歩きながら、朝の静けさの中に「パコーン！」というゴルフボールを打つ音をきく、、、気持ちよかったです。

King Hassan II – may he rest in peace – who reigned as King of Morocco from 1961 to 1999, also loved golf, and there were photographs of him playing on display, as well as the history of golf in Morocco.

1961年から1999年までモロッコ国王に即位していたハサン2世、ご本人もゴルフを愛していたようで、プレイ中のお写真などが飾られていました。他にも、モロッコ国内でのゴルフの歴史なども分かりやすく展示されていましたよ。

We ran into many groups of children in the fan area, probably on their school trips. Some were trying their hand at putting, or watching the tournament, and some were enjoying cool breeze at the food court. Golf is a sport that values courtesy and manners, and I think it’s fantastic for children to be exposed to that kind of sportsmanship from a young age.

修学旅行なのか、子供達のグループがたっくさん、ファン·エリアに来ていましたよ。みんなでパッテイングをやってみたり、観戦したり、フードコートで涼みながらご飯を食べている子もいました。ゴルフはコーテシーやマナーを重んじるスポーツ、小さな時からそういったスポーツマンシップに触れるのは良いことですよね。

We left the tournament venue hoping that our moving boxes would arrive soon so that my husband could play golf there. Oh, by the way, I’m terrible at golf. I once took a class with a pro, but the only thing he complimented me on was my hat. I did have a great hat, if I remember correctly, but, hmm… Maybe, I should try again! Just because I would be so happy to go back to Royal Golf Dar Es Salam.

早く引越し荷物が届き、旦那さんがモロッコでもゴルフができるようになるといいなぁ、と願いつつ、トーナメント会場を後にしました。あ、私はゴルフは、、、ダメなんです。一度、プロの方のクラスをとりましたが、褒められたのは「被っていた帽子」のみ。確かにあの帽子はお気に入りだった、けど、うーん。でも、ラバトのゴルフコースがとても素敵だったので、もう一度はじめてみようかなぁ、とも思っております。

Dar Jamai Museum in Meknes

メクネスのダール・ジャマイ博物館

A little bit more about Meknes. Luckily, we had some time to spare after my husband’s guest speaker appearance over there. It was a good idea that we made it as “a little weekend gateway” and enjoyed a more relaxed pace.

メクネスの続きを少々。日帰りでも可能なゲストスピーカー業務ではありましたが、術後でもあり、時間もあり、、、だったので、ホテルをとってゆっくりなスケジュールで行ってきました。

We had done most of the “sightseeing” in Meknes during the last two visits, but there was one place we really wanted to go!

ほぼほぼ「メクネス観光」はしていたのですが、１箇所まだ訪れていない場所＆行ってみたい場所、がありまして、今回はじめて行く事ができました。

Meknes’ proud Dar Jamai Museum. It showcases Morocco’s unique musical culture, located in Al Hadeem Square. The entrance is small, but once inside, the contents are quite abundant and very impressive. Also, look at that beautiful courtyard!

メクネスが誇る＜ダール·ジャマイ博物館＞。ここは音楽文化を紹介したミュージアムなんです～。メディーナの中心、エル·ヘディム広場にあるこの博物館、入り口はとても小さいのですが、中にはいってみるとなかなか見応えのある内容、そして、この美しいコートヤード！

As a music museum, traditional Moroccan instruments and their playing methods are beautifully displayed. What I found particularly interesting was the section introducing the music of people living in Berber culture. Even though it’s all called “Amazigh Music,” the sounds, singing voices, instrument usage, and dance styles differ depending on where people live and their historical influences.

音楽博物館、だけあり、モロッコの伝統的な楽器や演奏方法が美しく飾られています。特に面白かったのは、ベルベル文化で過ごす人たちの音楽紹介。ひとことで「アマジール」といえども、住んでいる場所や歴史的な影響によって、作り出す音や歌声、そして楽器の使い方＆曲にあわせた踊り方、など違うんです。そのあたりをしっかり見る事ができます。

This museum building is a magnificent mansion built in 1882 by the Jamai family, and it then served as a hospital during the French colonial era. The building itself is truly beautiful.

こちらの博物館の建物は、1882年にジャマイ家によって建てられた豪邸、フランス統治時代は病院にもなったという場所。この建物自体が本当に美しくて、もう感激～。

The mosaic-like tiles and colorful stained-glass windows, along with the unique lime plaster walls called Tadelakt, and the intricate and beautiful Naqsh (plaster sculptures), are so captivating that you could spend hours admiring them (that’s exactly what we did).

モザイクのようなタイルに、カラフルなステンドグラス。タデラクトと呼ばれる石灰の独特な壁に、ナクシュ（石膏彫刻）が複雑かつ美しく施されていて様子は、何時間かけても見ていたくなります。

As it’s a music museum, there’s “sound” everywhere you go. The speakers in the garden were even decorated to look like stone. Well done!

音楽博物館だけに、どの場所にいっても「音」がありまして。庭園のスピーカーは石のようにお化粧されておりました。素敵！

By the way, at the McDonald’s drive-thru in Meknes, we spotted some local warriors dressed in traditional Moroccan attire riding up to place their orders. I suppose you could call it a “Horse-thru”?

ちなみに、、、メクネスにあるマクドナルドのドライブスルーには、モロッコの伝統的なアーミー達が買いに来ていました。「ホース·スルー」って事かしら。

It’s cooooold in Meknes – in May

メクネスはクールです！

My husband’s recovery following his surgery has been going very smoothly. Since his doctor gave us the green light, we went ahead with a business trip he had originally scheduled (and, out of concern, I decided to come along with him).

旦那さんの手術後の回復はとても順調。お医者様からも「普通の生活に戻っていいよ～」とおすみつきをいただけましたので、もともと予定の入っていた出張に行ってきました（そして、心配なので、一緒に行ってきました）。

The destination was, ENSAM Meknes, a graduate school located in the beautiful city of Meknes. My husband had been invited there as a guest speaker. And, we were very excited to show up after seeing this poster. Who wouldn’t? Okay, a little explanation here:the theme of this campus event taking place that day happened to be “Siberia.” 

場所はメクネスという都市にある大学院。こちらでゲストスピーカーとして招待された旦那さん、その日にキャンパスで行われているイベントのテーマが「シベリア」という事で、彼のトークに関する告知ポスターもこの通り、、、（笑）。氷の中、とは、新鮮です。

Why Siberia? Well, it turns out it’s a play on words: “Cyber” combined with “IA”—the French acronym for AI (Artificial Intelligence). So, Cyber ​​+ IA = Siberia! How clever and creative! This “cool” theme was all over the decorations around the venue, which was quite amusing.

なぜシベリア？こちら、「サイバー」という言葉にフランス語でのAIがIA, つまり、Cyber+IA=サイベリア（Syberia）！あああ、なるほどねぇ、クリエイティブねぇ、と思っていたら、あらま、いろんなデコレーションもそのノリが面白い。

Incidentally, my husband’s name is Olof. Yes—just like the snowman from the Disney movie *Frozen*! So, as an “icebreaker” with the students, he wore this “Olaf” hat. It fit the “Siberia” theme perfectly!

ちなみに、旦那さんの名前はオオラフ。そうです、ディズニーの映画、フローズンの雪だるまと同じ！なので、学生さん達との”アイスブレーカー”として、この「オオラフ」帽子を持参。サイベリア·テーマに合ってました～。

The students were incredibly sharp, friendly, and positive. A lively Q&A session followed the lecture, with plenty of questions coming from the audience. Just as he had during his visit to the graduate school in Rabat, my husband appeared to thoroughly enjoy interacting with these young engineers. 

学生さん達はとても頭がきれる、フレンドリー、そしてポジティブ。講義の後に、たくさんの質問が出ていました。ラバトの大学院で行った時同様、旦那さんは若いエンジニア達との交流をとても楽しんでいた模様。

The journey from Rabat to Meknes takes just under three hours by train. Meknes is one of Morocco’s “Four Imperial Cities”- alongside Fes, Marrakech, and Rabat – as it served as the royal capital for a dynasty back in the 17th century. We’ve visited Meknes twice before, but on both occasions, our focus was strictly on sightseeing (Volubilis, the site of impressive Roman Empire ruins, is located quite close to Meknes). Consequently, spending time visiting a local graduate school, or leisurely exploring the city’s souks and local restaurants, felt like a truly fresh and relaxing experience.

ラバトからメクネスへは、列車で約3時間弱で到着。メクネスは、17世紀にアラウィー朝の王宮があったので、フェス、マラケッシュ、ラバトと並んで「四大帝国都市」です。過去2度ほど足を運んでいますが、どちらも観光がメイン（ローマ帝国時代の遺跡がみれるボリビリスもメクネスから近いんです）。なので、地元の大学院に行ったり、街中のスークをや地元のレストランをゆっくり楽しんだり、、、の時間はとても新鮮でした。

As for me, I could hardly believe that it had been just ten days since my husband underwent heart surgery. And seeing my husband on stage, delivering a lecture filled with passion and plenty of jokes, brought me to tears.

私は、といえば、ほんの１０日前に心臓の手術をしたのが信じられない、という気持ちでした。そして、ステージで情熱たっぷり＆ジョークたっぷり、に講義をしている旦那さんの姿に、涙でした。

I am so thankful.

感謝でいっぱいです。

You might have noticed that I have been blogging more frequently in the last few days. There is a reason: my husband was hospitalized for five days, and I had more time to sit down and work with my laptop.

ここのところ、ブログの投稿が頻繁でありましたが、それには訳がありまして。実は、旦那さんがこちらの病院に５日間入院していたのでした。

During those five days, my husband underwent surgery and is now recovering very well. Today, he was finally able to return home! Humdulillah! The doctors, nurses, managers, security staff at the clinic… everyone was so kind and professional. I was so touched by them. They always greeted me with warm smiles, and made sure everything was okay. They were angels – made me cry.

緊急手術も行い順調に回復中。そして今日、晴れて我が家に戻ってこれました！病院の先生、ナースのみなさん、セキュリティの方々、、、みなさん本当に素晴らしくて、優しくて。涙がでました。

I won’t mention the details of procedures and such, but I thought it would be worth sharing a little bit about our hospitalization experience in Morocco (to especially those who don’t live here).

病名などは控えますが、でも！モロッコでの入院体験を少しブログに残しておきたいと思います。

We were given a very comfortable private room with a nice bathroom. The cost was 600 MAD per night (about $65), which was without insurance. There was even a cozy sofa that could turn into a day bed for me to stay overnight, but I didn’t. The clinic was only 3 minutes away from our place, so I just went back and forth as necessary.

おトイレ／シャワー付きの個室をいただきまして（一泊の費用は約６００ディルハム、日本円で1万円くらいでしょうか）、とっても快適でした。私が一緒に泊まれるデイベッドにもなる心地よいソファーもありましたが、宿泊することはなかったです。家から3分の病院だったため、行ったり来たりしていました。

But, to keep him from feeling lonely sleeping alone, our teddy, Hoover, stayed with my hubby. The blanket in the room was so fluffy, it reminded me of something you’d find in a Japanese Minshuku (Japanese style bed & breakfast). Matched well with our Hoover.

1人で寝るのが寂しくないように、テディベアのフーバーくんはお泊まりです。このブランケットが、日本の旅館にあるようなフワフワ感で、なんとも心地よい。

The painting in the room was so Moroccan, so cute!　お部屋の中に飾られている絵が、すごく可愛かったです。

I am sure you would be interested in seeing “hospital food” in Morocco. A very “home-cooked” style with gentle flavors. Always comes with Moroccan bread, Khubs. My husband LOVES coffee, and was glad that there was this coffee package in the breakfast tray. The little pot contained warm milk, and you can put the coffee in there, which becomes NousNous (Moroccan latte).

気になる「入院食」ですが、こんな感じです～。旦那さんはコーヒーが大好きなんですが、このコーヒーの粉！が朝ごはんの中にあって、よかったです。。。ポットの中は、あたたかいミルク。これでに粉を入れて、ヌスヌス（モロカン·ラテ）状態。

Every time I walked back and forth, this beautiful tunnel of Jacaranda trees encouraged me to stay positive.　毎日行ったり来たりの道。満開のジャカランダ並木がとってもきれいで、心が癒されました。

Conversations with the nurses were either in French or Darija, which was a great learning experience for me. There was one nurse who kept on talking to us in Spanish though. I was glad that I took a Spanish class when we lived in Barcelona.

ナースの方達との会話はフランス語かダリジャ語になるため、すごーく勉強になりました。なぜかスペイン語を話してくるナースの方もいましたが（笑）、バルセロナ時代に通ったスペイン語教室が少し役立ったかも。

Our dear friends here and the US, our neighbors, my choir members, caretakers of our apartment building and around streets… thank you so much for reaching out to us, and sending us good wishes.

こちらのお友達や、ご近所さん、アメリカのお友達、クワイヤーのみなさん、家の周りのケアテイカーの方達、、、たくさんの方が声をかけてくれ、本当にみなさんの優しさのおかげで乗り越えられました。

It was somewhat unexpected but definitely a valuable experience. I was deeply impressed by the quality of care we were able to receive in Moroccan healthcare system, and the high skills of the people working there. And their amazing warmth… so so thankful.

ちょっと予想外の貴重な体験をさせてもらいましたが、モロッコの医療機関の良さ、そこで働くみなさんのレベルの高さ、に感動いたしました。そして、みなさんの心のあたたかさ、、、

My husband is back home now, and I am feeling relieved. I think I’ll finally be able to get some sleep. These past five days have reminded me of simple but important things: to cherish each day, to give lots of hugs to the people we love, and never forget kindness and gratitude. God is great.

今は旦那さんも家に戻ってきて、ホッとしているところ。やっと睡眠が取れそうです。毎日を大切に、愛する人とたくさんのハグをして、優しさと感謝の気持ちを忘れずにすごす。シンプルだけど、重要なことをリマインドしてもらった５日間でした。神様に感謝の気持ちをこめて。

Easy as Pie, Turnips, Bread, Babyfood…

『そんなの簡単！』をいろんな言葉で表現

I suddenly got to thinking; the expression, “that’s so easy” can be described as “Piece of Cake” or “Easy as Pie” in English. I assume that these expressions came from “as easy as eating a piece of cake or pie” but! I became a bit curious; <What would people say, in a country without a culture of eating cakes and pies? Or, they are actually very expensive that it is NOT easy to eat cakes and pies…?>

ふと思ったんです。「そんなの簡単！」という表現、英語ですと”Piece of Cake” や、”Easy as Pie” と、ケーキやパイが登場してきますが、まぁ「ケーキやパイを食べるくらい簡単」という意味だと思うのですが、『もし、ケーキやパイのない文化の国だったら、なんて表現するのかなぁ』と興味が湧いてしまったんです。

So, I did some research. All kinds of different expressions to say “that’s so easy” in different languages. Turned out, they are quite interesting, revealing characteristics of different cultures and different countries. Why don’t we take a look together!

と言うことで、調べてみましたよ～。いろんな言語で表現する「そんなの簡単！」なんだかお国柄がでていてなかなか面白いですので、みなさまにもご紹介します。

I guess it’s same in French as “Gâteau” = cake. Come to think of it, Marie Antoinette supposedly said, “Let them eat a cake,” right?　フランス語も英語と同じ、Gateau, ケーキなんですねぇ。そういえば、マリー·アントワネットも「（パンがなければ）ケーキを食べればいいじゃない？」と言ったとか言わなかったとか。

Crepe-like pancakes in Sweden – oh so yum! Making those pancakes is not that easy, I have to say – it requires certain skills. But, I also have to say – it’s so easy to eat (a lot of) them! With lingonberry jam, cloud berry jam, and whipped cream…　スウェーデンのパンケーキは、クレープのように薄くて、リンゴンベリー·ジャムやクラウドベリー·ジャムホイップ·クリームで食べると最高～。軽く５枚くらい食べられちゃいます、はい。

Turnip is an essential ingredient in Borscht. I bet steaming it is certainly easy.　ボルシチには欠かせないかぶ。それを蒸すだけなら確かに簡単です。

Sewing while singing in Spain… that’s quite poetic! I might be able to hum a tune, but real singing? Hmm…　スペインでは歌いながらお裁縫する、、、なかなかイキですね。私も鼻歌くらいならできるかな。

Cantonese speaking people mention lettuce. Okay. I wonder if they eat raw? A bit too crunchy? It doesn’t seem so easy, but it must be very healthy.　広東語はレタスときましたね。生のままバリバリいくんでしょうか。そんなに簡単そうではないですが、まぁ、体には良さそうです。

I like this simplicity in Polish. Maybe Poland is a simple country. But, it’s also kind of charming and relaxing.　いいですねぇ、このシンプルさ。ポーランドってシンプルな文化なんでしょうか。なんだか落ち着きます。

I can totally imagine some German children playing on wooden toys or something. Then after their play time, they eat HARIBO.　　”木製の遊具で遊ぶドイツの子供たち”のイメージ。遊び疲れたら、ハリボーのグミ、かな。

Aww, baby food. That’s cute. But homemade baby food could be time-consuming. So, I believe, they mean baby food in those little jars.　ベビーフードとは、かわいい。でも、お手製のベビーフードはなかなか手間がかかるので、ここでの意味は、瓶詰めのものでしょうかね。

I think Tajine could be “easy-to-prepare” dish in Morocco. You just need to put in meat, veggies, and spices, then simmer for some time. They will all taste good, thanks to the magic of Tajine… Yup, easy-peasy!　モロッコでの「手間のかからないお料理」って、やっぱりタジーン？確かに、煮込む時間は必要ですが、お肉やお野菜＆スパイスを入れて火にかけるだけ、、、ではありますね。

This Japanese expression feels the most fitting (according to my Japanese DNA). No need to eat cake, bread, turnips, or baby food. However, I do want to request “rice, natto and miso soup” for my breakfast after finishing some easy task when I wake up.　やっぱり「朝飯前」が感覚的に1番しっくりきます！ケーキもパンもカブもタジーンも食べる必要なし、さっさとできちゃう感じ。でも、タスクが終わったら、ゆっくり納豆ご飯とお味噌汁食べたいな（TKGもいいな）。

10 cents donut? In this economy?

お買い得で”貴重な”ドーナッツとザーザー

Let me write about two delicious & dangerous snacks that you are sure to come across while walking through the medina in Morocco. They might not be the healthiest snacks, but sometimes you deserve a “cheat day” – I certainly enjoy cheating with these snacks.

モロッコのメディーナを歩いていると、絶対にみかける美味しいスナックをふたつご紹介します。決して、「体に良い」スナックとはいえないのですが、、、人生、時には＜チートデイ＞も必要！と言うことで、はい。

The first one is something between a smoothie and a parfait, called Za3Za3. It’s pronounced “Zaa-Zaa”, which makes me think of the sound of rain in Japanese. This snack is primarily an avocado smoothie, and the name of Darija means “to shake things up.” The texture is kind of like milkshake at McDonald’s and it has full of fresh avocado flavor. But, Za3Za3 has a lot more to enjoy. It is generously mixed with walnuts, almonds, dates and other dried fruits, topped with fresh fruits. Sounds healthy? Wait a little bit…

まずは、Za3Za3と呼ばれるこのドリンク？パフェ？です。これで「ザーザー」と読みます。雨の音のようですね。こちらは、アボカドのスムージーが主体になったスナックでして、ダリジャ語で”シェイクする”という意味があるのです。あ、そうか、よくマクドナルドなどにあるシェイクですね。と、考えると、アイスクリームの代わりにアボカドが使われているし、ナッツ類やデーツなどもふんだんに混ぜ混ぜされている、、まぁ、ちょっと健康志向？

Here is the part you don’t want to be fooled. It is usually decorated with plenty of chocolate sauce, often with a big drop of whipped cream, and even cookies like Oreos or KitKat. Yup, this whole “Shaken up” snack can easily reach 700~800 calories.

いえいえ、だまされてはいけません。こちらには通常、たっぷりのチョコレートソース、時にはウィップクリーム、さらには、オレオやキットカット（なぜだろう？）といったクッキーがのるんです。これ、普通に全部一杯食べたら700~800カロリーは下らないでしょうね。

From a historical perspective, it seems that the popularity of avocados began around the year 2000 in Morocco, triggered by the success in local avocado production. Za3Za3 became incredibly popular as a desert after breaking the fast during Ramadan. You put everything you want to snack, but let’s mix them with healthy avocados! Yup, it works.

歴史的観点では、約2000年ごろからはじまったモロッコでのアボカド生産／販売の成功がきっかけとなって流行りはじめたとか。そして、ラマダン中の断食明けのデザートとしてすごく人気が出たそうです。わかる気がしますぅ。

The next item is Sfenj, a type of donut you see freshly made in the tiny little corner shop. Unlike the American-style donuts, which are dense and often with lots of creams and colorful, sweet icing, this Moroccan-style donut has a crispy texture, and usually just simply sprinkled with sugar or drizzled with honey (you can buy plain ones, too).

もうひとつは、スフェンジ。ドーナッツです！欧米でスタンダードなしっかり＆ぎっしりした生地とは違い、サクサクっとした食感。さらに、カラフルで甘ーいアイシングなどはなく、シンプルにお砂糖をまぶす、あるいは蜂蜜を垂らすのみ（プレインでも買えますよ）。

Similar donuts can be found in other Arab and African countries. What makes them so delicious is being able to eat fresh and hot. You will find a small stall where an uncle (or young man) is constantly throwing the dough in hot oil. Often, the flying pot looks as old as the uncle, the oil seems “well-used, well-seasoned, and well-loved,” and that’s what makes Sfenj so yummy!

他のアラブ諸国やアフリカの国でも似たようなドーナッツが広がっているようですが、なにが美味しいって、揚げたてをほくほく言いながら食べれるところ。通常、小さな屋台やお店で、おじさん（お兄さん？）がひたすら揚げまくっています。年季の入った揚げ油にお鍋、、、これがいいんですよ。

It is said that these kinds of donuts were invented by the Moors who lived in the Andalusia region of Spain. At that time, these donuts were so popular, with people saying, “Those who make Sfenj are as valuable as kings.”

はじまりは、スペインはアンダルーシア地方に住んでいたムーア族さんたちが作り始めたとか。当時、この魅力的なスナックは大変な人気だったようで、「スフェンジを作るひとたちは、国王ほどに貴重な存在である」と言われたほど、だそうですよ。

You can buy Sfenj in Rabat for 1~2 dirhams (10~20 cents) each. They go perfectly with our beloved mint tea! Indeed, a snack that you can enjoy at this price, in this economy, is so valuable.

ラバトのスフェンジ、ひとつ１～２ディルハム（15～30円）で買えます。ミントティと最高にあいます！確かに、このお値段で楽しめるスナックは、「貴重な存在」ですねぇ。
