I am not joking about “Mzah” – Loquats

びわとの出会いは冗談ではありませんでした

I have noticed these small orange-colored fruits at Hanouts (the Moroccan version of convenience stores) and vegetable stores recently. I have also seen them growing on trees on roadsides where I walk. I thought they looked like loquats, but I wasn’t sure. 

最近、こちらのハヌート（モロッコ版·コンビニ）や野菜屋さんで気になっていたオレンジ色の実。よく歩く道端の木にもなってるんですよね。どう見ても「びわ」っぽい。

My image of loquats – from Japan – are “high-class” fruits. Each fruit is often wrapped in thin paper and placed in a beautiful box; it is a luxury fruit that is even presented to the Imperial family; it is a forbidden fruit that I was told by my mother “you may only eat two for a day” (then I would secretly eat another one later – I was the youngest child, the most mischievous one, of course). 

でも、私のイメージのびわは、一つ一つが薄い紙に包まれていて、きれいな箱に入っている、天皇家にも献上される、高級フルーツ。あんまりたくさん食べれない（母に「今日は２個だけね」と言わつつ、隠れてもう１個食べて、後で怒られる末っ子系）フルーツ、というイメージがあります。

IF these orange fruits are indeed loquats…?? It is my duty to try, isn’t it? But, they are placed carelessly, without any special protection or signature boxes, right next to cucumber and carrots. I was worried. I have nothing against cucumbers and carrots. I was just slightly in culture-shock, I guess, but then, I realized, I could probably eat more than two pieces of loquats a day, IF they truly are loquats…

しかし、もし、ここにあるのがびわだったら、、、? これは絶対にトライしなければ。これは私のミッションです。でも、こちらでは、かなり無造作に、ドッカーンとおいてあるものだなぁ、と。きゅうりやにんじんの横に。良い意味でカルチャーショックです。あ、でも、これだったら、２個以上食べても怒られることはなさそうです。

I decided to ask Mr. Mol Hanout (Hanout Master), “what is this?” He gave me a very Mol Hanout answer: “Oh, it’s sweet, it’s delicious, it’s Mzen! Mzen! (good! good)!”

勇気を出して、ハヌートの陽気なお兄ちゃん、Mol Hanut君に「これはなんなのかい？」と聞いてみたところ、「甘いヨォ～。美味しいヨォ～。ムジエン！ムジエン！（グッド!グッド！）」と、商売上手なお答え。

Fine, I just have to try then. I bought some. Sidi (brother) said, “It’s called Mzah; you peel it, and you eat.” Wakha (okay) 👍🏼🙆🏻‍♀️! 

食べてみるしかないか！と思い、恐々、とりあえず購入しました。Sidi曰く、「これはMzahって言うんだ。皮をむいて食べてね。」と。オッケー。Ohh, they look like loquats… やっぱりびわっぽい。。。

Let’s peel it… 皮をむいて。。。

Oh, the seed looks like loquat’s. お！タネもびわのタネじゃないのぉ〜！

It tastes like loquat – it IS loquat! Hooray! 食べたら、やっぱりびわの味！やったー！

As a loquat lover, this was a wonderful surprise. I never thought I would be able to find loquats so easily in Morocco. びわ好きな私には、これはとってもとっても幸せなビックリでした。モロッコでこんなに簡単にびわに出会えるとは、、、

By the way, this fruit is also called “Japanese Plums” here – isn’t it sweet? Plus, Mzah has another meaning in Darija, which is “Joke.” 😂 They were not in nice boxes, but, to me, this Petit Japon is such a treat in springtime in Morocco. Also, for me, who knows the price of loquats in Morocco now, the price of loquats in Japan seemes like a joke. Is it also necessary to overpackage fruits like Japan? That part seems like a joke as well.

ちなみに、Mzahという言葉、Jokeという言葉の意味もあるそうです。冗談のようなフルーツなのでしょうか？またの名をJapanese Plumとも呼ばれて親しまれているモロッコのびわ。丁寧な箱に入ってないけれど、私にとっては、💎宝物💎のような気持ちで出会えたPetit Japon🇯🇵です。こちらのびわのお値段を知ってしまった私にとっては、日本でのびわのお値段が冗談に感じてしまいそうです。あるいは、単なる果物にあんなに過大包装をするという部分もジョークに思えてきたりもします（それで余計、高値になるんでしょうか？）。

Bad Dream with (New) Norwegian Husband

プチ更年期障害と（新しい）ノルウェー人の旦那さん？

Today was a resting day. I had terrible cramps and headaches, and I just couldn’t get up. I practically stayed in bed all day. Come to think of it, it was my first time to spend a whole day inside the room after we moved to Morocco. Well, couldn’t help it. 

プチ更年期の症状なのか、腹痛と頭痛がひどくて起き上がれない日となり、今日は1日ベッドで過ごしちゃいました。モロッコに越してきてからはじめてかな、1日寝てたのは、、、。こう言う日があってもしょうがないですね。

So, my symptoms: I looked them up, and I found out something. 調べてみると、このようなことがかいてありました。

“Perimenopausal hormone fluctuations can worsen your familiar, underlying premenstrual and menstrual symptoms, as high levels of estrogen can cause your body to release prostaglandins, or chemicals that make your uterus contract, which cause pain like heavy cramps.”

「閉経前のホルモンバランスは既に更年期時期に起こりやすい症状を悪化させる傾向があります。例えば、高エストロゲン血症がプロスタグランジンという子宮の収縮を促す化学物質を出しますので、強い生理痛のような痛みを引き起こします。」

🤷🏻‍♀️Oh, fun… そうかいな🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, I haven’t slept well for a while. That’s supposedly another thing about perimenopause. I wake up so often, like every one or two hours, or, I get strange dreams. Usually dreams with nonsense stories. Apparently, I ask my husband questions when I wake up (he is often awake next to me, as he is working with his laptop) and poor Olof has to listen to my silly stuff which doesn’t make sense at all… 

あと、基本よく眠れていないんです。寝ても、1~2時間毎に起きています。そして変なストーリーの夢を見ています。どうも、その夢に関して、隣で起きている旦那さんに質問したりしてるみたいです。ごめんねぇ。

For example, this is the kind of dream I have. Note: my son is an artist, but I am not.  例えばこんな夢。絵で説明します。ところで、絵を描く才能があるのは息子であって、私ではありません。

Olof is working, Tomo is Studying, Ewoks from Star Wars are patrolling us with their guns. – なぜか離れた部屋でそれぞれ作業中の夫婦、スターウォーズのイゥオークが拳銃を持ってパトロール中。
Olof wants to go to the Cave to buy his “Adult Beverages” but Tomo worries that he will be shot by Ewoks. – お酒を買いに行こうとするオオラフを「イウォークに撃たれちゃうから、やめて！」と必死に止めるトモ。
But, his passion for “Adult Beverages” was big. Ewoks await. Tomo cries. – オオラフはお酒屋さんへ出発。イウォークは定位置へ。トモは泣く。The End.

According to my husband, when “Bad Olof” (such as this) appears in my dreams, it is NOT a real Olof. That “Bad Olof” is a “Norwegian Olof.” Because the Real Olof is Swedish. 

ちなみに、夢の中で出てくる＜悪者オオラフ＞は、スウェーデン人ではなく、＜ノルウェー人のオオラフ＞だそうです。

Anyone who is going through Perimenopause or menopause: Do you have bad dreams? Do you experience cramps? Do you have a Norwegian partner who appears to be Swedish in your dream? I hope we are able to survive during this challenging time together (with a good sense of humor and lots of understanding from our partners) 💝💝💝

Easter Morning Thought – “Advanced Society”

イースターの朝に思う「進んだ社会」の定義とは？

What is the definition of “Advanced Society”? Is it Technological Prowess? Is it Economic Prosperity? Is it Richness in Culture? When ChatGPT gives us an answer, when Katy Perry can fly into space, or when we can purchase online, are these the signs of advanced society?

いきなりですが、＜進んだ社会＞の定義とはなんでしょうか？テクノロジーや文化、経済が発展した社会？ChatGPTに聞けばなんでも答えが返ってきて、ケイティ·ペリーが宇宙で１１分間飛べて、オンラインでお買い物できる世界？

I am going to share my personal opinion here. What I value in an advanced society is, simply, “Kindness.” 私的な＜進んだ社会の定義＞は、その社会に『まわりに対する優しさ』があるかどうか、です。

People simply get scared when we see others who are not like ourselves. That’s a normal human defense mechanism. Then, we have a choice: 人間って、自分と同じ人種や文化ではない人にはどうしても防衛体制をとってしまいますよね。これは普通のこと。でもそこで選択枠があるのかな、と。

#1) We could stay being scared, which leads to confusion or misunderstanding. But, without trying to be inclusive or reaching out, we create a big gap. In a terrible scenario, this creates arguments, then, a real worst case, war between countries or cultures. そのまま防衛体制をとり、それがもとに、混乱や誤解も起きてしまったり。理解しあおうとしないので、大きな溝が生じてしまい、闘争がうまれ、最悪の場合、国や文化の間で戦争にまで発展してしまう。

#2) We acknowledge that we are all humans, and we should be open-minded about differences. No need to create arguments; instead, put energy to find a common ground. みんな人間！だから、違って当然、と認知する。その上で共通点を見つけることに集中していく。

I think #2) requires extra work, BUT, with the help of “kindness”, anyone can achieve it – without any ChatGPT assistance or an Amazon Prime purchase. However, giving kindness to others is a POWERFUL decision, a real dedication, and a rewarding lifestyle, which has an even MORE POWERFUL capability to change society. 

２番目を選択するのは、”優しさ”という力をかりれば、誰だって達成できることだと思います。ChatGPTのお世話になることもなく、Amazonプライム会員になる必要もなし。でも、周りの人に親切にすることは、実はとてもパワフルな決断だと！心からの献身があり、やりがいがあり、それがあるから、パワフルに社会を変えていく事ができると思うんですよね。

I live in Morocco as an immigrant. I am not an expat, I am not a diplomat, I simply migrated from another country. I am an alien who cannot speak the local language, nor understand the local culture fully. YET, people here have been welcoming me, trying to help me, and including me with an open heart (By the way, not many people here care about Katy Perry’s space trip – I asked).

私は単に1人の移民としてこのモロッコに住み始めました。駐在員でも外交官でもありません。他の国から「おじゃまさせていただきます🙇🏻‍♀️」と入ってきたのみ、です。現地の言葉もきちんとしゃべれませんし、こちらの文化もしっかり理解できていません。でも、こちらの方達は、私を温かく迎え入れてくれ、助けの手を差し伸べてくれ、心を開いてくれています（ちなみに、こちらでは、ケイティ·ペリーの宇宙旅行の件には興味ない方が多いようです）。

That’s what I call “Advanced Society” – There is a harmony. And, when you are in harmony, people are vibrant. Their smiles are genuine. And, that has a positive, contagious effect, that I would also like to be kind to them & contribute to their society somehow. これが、＜進んだ社会＞なのかなぁ、と。そして、そういった調和ある社会にいる方達は、活気に満ちています。笑顔も本物です。そして、そのような社会にいると、自然と、私もみなさんに優しくなりたい、貢献したい、と思えてきます。

Our son who studies Graphic Art at RISD shared with us these assignments; apparently, he had to “choose a cultural theme (e.g., festival, tradition) and create a series of illustrations incorporating only 5 colors significant to that culture. You should explain their color choices in relation to cultural symbolism.”

RISDでグラフィックアートを勉強中の息子の課題作品。”文化的なテーマ（イベントや伝統など）を選び、その文化にそった意味のある色５つを使ったイラストを制作。そして、その色彩の選択を、文化的な象徴性と照らし合わせて説明する”という内容だったそうです。

He chose the “Sami” culture, as he is part of Sami and we, as a family, cherish its tradition dearly. The harmony of the colors and expressions in these illustrations encouraged me to express what I wrote today. I found the tremendous “kindness” in his art. Tack så mycket, Koji! On this Easter, on this day of hope & renewal, I choose to be kind. 

彼はサーミ文化を選択。彼自身もサーミ族の血が入っており、私達家族もその伝統を大切にしています。このイラストの、色の調和と表現の豊かさから、息子のサーミ文化に対する＜優しさ＞を感じ、今日のブログを書くきっかけとなりました。コウジさん、ありがとう！イースターの朝、私も＜優しさ＞を持ち続けられるよう、希望を忘れず、心の再更新をしていきたいと思います。

Sakura & CousCous & Obento

サクラとクスクスとお弁当

Everyone has their own way of expressing themselves. Some dance, some sing, some paint, some calligraphy, some act, or some say jokes – whether they are funny or not (I love my husband) . I think I often make silly Obento 🍱. When our kids are at school, I made these weird Obento, and this might have caused some unnecessary difficulties or questions for them. Or, they learned to be extra forgiving (I love my kids).

自分を表現する方法、というのはいろいろあると思います。ダンスする人、歌を唄う人、絵を描く人、書道をする人、演劇をする人、ジョークを言って笑わせる人 (愛する旦那さんがこのタイプ）、などなど。私は「変なお弁当を作る人」なのかもしれないのですが、そのせいで、子供達には多大な迷惑をかけてしまったかな、それとも、とても寛大な子供達に育ったかな、とも思います。どちらにしても、最愛の子供達です。

I made these “Themed Bentos” or “Character Bentos” often. However, unfortunately, they don’t often turn out to be the way I want them to be, or stay as they should be in bento boxes (as shown in the photo). Also, you might want to know that I don’t always go for silliness – for example, on Japanese New Year, I make traditional boxed dish, called Osechi.

こんな感じのキャラ弁などをよく作ったのですが、失敗も多々ありました（写真のような）。また、私は真面目な時も多々あります。お正月はおせち、これもある意味、とってもスペシャルなお弁的かな、と。

I wonder if Obento culture is unique to Japan? It is simply a boxed lunch, with all sorts of nutritious food. But, it’s more than that. Ekiben, or Bento at school trips or sports events… The Bento on those occasions is not just food for our bodies, but for our souls; because we pack the memories which come with Bento eating time along with already beautifully packed food, and we carry it, we keep it, and we cherish it for a long time. My silly Obento was never that well-packed or nutritiously ell-balanced (sorry) but I can tell they were unique. 

お弁当カルチャーって日本固有のものなのかしら？駅弁や遠足のお弁当って、なんとなく独特な文化がありますよね。箱詰めになった中にひそむ、味わいとバランスの取れた栄養。それに見た目もよければ最高！お弁当の中には、栄養だけでなく、懐かしさやあたたかさも一緒になってつめられていて、食べ終わったあともその気持ちはずっと残っているように感じます。ところで私の変なお弁当達は、決して美味しいものだけではなかったかな、と反省。でも、話題性はあったかな。

In Morocco, Friday is Couscous Day! and you can find CousCous signs all over town at cafés and restaurants. Also, pumpkins, which are essential for couscous, become the main stage character in the vegetable section from Thursday! No, you don’t need to buy a whole pumpkin, you can ask Mul Hanut (store owner) how much you want and take home your desired amount. I kind of think the couscous you eat at restaurants is a bit like a Moroccan version of Obento. The balance of meat and vegetables is just right, it looks beautiful, well-packed, and it’s a perfect dish that comes together on one plate (At home, it is more likely served on a larger plate and everyone eats it in a circle). モロッコでは、金曜日が＜クスクスの日＞だそうで、街中のレストランやカフェでも大々的にサインが出ます。そして、木曜日くらいから、クスクスにはかかせない”カボチャ”が野菜売り場にドッカーンと主役になりまして、いえいえ、一つ丸ごと買う必要はないみたいです。’このくらいくださいな’でOK。レストランで食べるクスクスって、ちょっと＜モロッコ版のお弁当＞みたいだなぁ、って思います。お肉とお野菜のバランスもいいし、見た目もきれいで、ひと皿でしっかりまとまった完璧ディッシュ。ご家庭ではもーっと大皿に盛って、みんなでわいわい輪になって食べる、って感じのようです。クスクスや、モロッコの食べ物についてもっと知りたい方は、ぜひこちらに目を通されてくださいな（英語のみ）！

About this time of the year, I hear how beautiful Sakura is from my family and friends in Japan. Then, I start missing Japan more. Sakura does that to me, deemaa (always). So, I decided to make “Japanese Cherry Blossom (Hanami) Bento” – with whatever I can use at home. See, we still haven’t received our moving boxes, so, not much Japanese tableware… oh well. Please excuse me for having Natto in the Obento. I made it for the first time by myself (and lots of lots of it, so I have to eat it).

この季節、日本の家族や友人たちの「桜便り」を耳に＆目にすると、やはり日本が恋しくなります。いろいろな引越し荷物が船便で届いて来ていない最中、和食器もまだあまり手元にないのですが、なんとなく「日本のお花見気分弁当」を作りたくなりました。お弁当の中に納豆、が入っているのはご愛嬌。はじめて自分で作ってみたので（こちらでは買えないので）、つい、、、（いっぱいできちゃったんです）。

I wonder if there are cherry trees in Morocco where I could go do Hanami? So many beautiful gardens and parks here in Rabat, I bet I could find cherry trees somewhere? It’s been challenging days, to be honest with Carte de Séjour stuff… I could use some Sakura-Fix!

モロッコにも、桜並木とかあるのかしら？公園や庭がいっぱい、な国だから、きっとどこかにありそうな、、、探してみよう！在留資格ゲットのために、かなりあたふたと心落ち着かない日々だからこそ、ゆっくりお花見でもしたいなぁと思う今日この頃です。

I will “stick to” my idea that mailing postcards with stamps is still cool – a visit to Musée Barid Al-Maghrib

寛大な心であふれるモロッコの郵便局、と、その博物館へ

First, a very important announcement! まずは、お知らせから。

In a previous blog, I mentioned that I sent a postcard to Japan without enough postage; 0.1MAD short. I knew that I was wrong to do so, but it was too late. BUT, it reached! What’s more, it arrived within 10 days! which is a lot faster than when I sent it from Seattle or from Barcelona (to Tokyo)! Hamdoulilah! and Churkran Bzaaf, I’m so grateful to everyone at Post Maroc, I’ll definitely repay you for your kindness someday.

以前お伝えしましたが、切手代が足りないまま送った日本への絵葉書は、無事に、両親の元へ届いております！しかもバルセロナやシアトルから送った時よりも速い10日以内の到着という素晴らしさ。モロッコ郵便局のみなさん、0.1MADに目をつぶってくださって、本当に感謝です。この御恩はきっとどこかで返します。

I also wrote about my simple question; ‘why are there any postcards of Rabat?’ So, I came across this “the Barid Al-Maghrib Museum (Postal Museum)” in the Rabat Ville area – maybe, there is a gift shop, and MAYBE – Mumkin – I can find Rabat postcards there??? Of course, I was also interested in the history of Moroccan postal services and the stamp exhibits. Yes, I was. And, it happened to be very close to my language school.

さて、他にも以前「なぜラバトの写真付き絵葉書がないのかな？」という素朴な疑問について書きました。そんな時に目に入ってきたのが、この＜郵便博物館＞。モロッコの郵便の歴史や切手の展示にも興味がありましたが、”あ、ギフトショップに、ラバトの絵葉書があるんじゃない？”という期待もなきにしもあらず。これは行くしかない！と思い、語学学校の帰りに寄ってみました。

Entrance was tiny, but it looked very official. I paid 10MAD (about $1.0), and filled out the form – phone number, passport number, email address, etc., and I was ready to explore. At this point, I knew that there was no sign of postcards at all. But, I kept on moving, because, sometimes, that’s what a civilized person should do. Sometimes. 💪🚶🏻‍♂️

入り口はとても小さかったのですが、正真正銘、博物館です。10MAD (約1ドル）を支払い、パスポート番号や電話番号などの諸事項も書き込み、さて、出発！もうこの時点で、ギフトショップに絵葉書がない事は確認済み😭。めげずに、前進していきましょう。時には、前進のみ!

The exhibition hall was nicely equipped with easy-to-understand explanations in Arabic, French and English. My father-in-law was a stamp collector, and I wish I could have brought him here if he was still alive. He would be like a kid in a candy store, or, to honor his Swedish heritage, he would be like a kid in a herring store. 🇸🇪🐟🇸🇪

嬉しい事に、展示会場はわかりやすい説明がダリジャ語＆フランス語＆英語でしっかりと書かれています。私の義理のお父さんは、切手のコレクターさんだったのですが、生きていたらぜひここに連れてきてあげたかったなぁ、と思いました。かなりテンション上がりっぱなしだったと思います。

Various stamps are displayed according to time and place; under French rule, Spanish rule, German rule, or British rule. Meanwhile, in 1892, during the time of the Sultan Moulay Hassan I, the MAKHZEN POSTAL, a postal delivery system run by Moroccans which connected 13 cities in Morocco, was established. Back then, postmen called The Rekkas would either ride horses or walk to deliver mail – dressed like this (carrying a packed lunch of dates, honey, and bread). Must be a tough job! 

モロッコの複雑な歴史を映し出すように、フランス統治下のもの、スペイン統治下のもの、ドイツ統治下のもの、イギリス統治下のもの、と、時代にや場所に変わって並んでいきます。そんな中、1892年、サルタンMoulay Hassan I 氏の時代には、”The MAKHZEN POSTAL”、つまり、モロッコの13都市を結ぶ、モロッコ人による郵便配達システムが開設。レッカと呼ばれた郵便配達のお兄さんたち、当時は馬に乗るか自分達の足で、えっちらおっちら、と、この写真のような格好で（デーツ、ハチミツ、パンのお弁当を持って）郵便物を運んでいたわけですねぇ。おつかれさまです！

Apparently, the very first Moroccan stamps were printed in 1912. I met Tariq-san, who is a museum director; “You see, stamps from the Spanish colonial period had people’s faces and bodies on them, but Moroccan stamps tended to feature more scenery and architecture.” Oh, I see. Tariq-san was very informative and very funny, too. “By the way, you are the only two visitors today – ahaha…” SOOO, I truly recommend for you to visit this museum! Seriously, you get very personal attention & a friendly tour.

はじめてモロッコで切手が作られたのが1912年だそうです。美しい。。。こちらは館長のタリックさん。「当時のヨーロッパ統治下の切手には、人の顔や様子が描かれてるでしょ？でも、モロッコの切手は、情景や建築物が主流だよね。」確かに。タリックさんは、本当に面白くていろいろ教えてくれて。「だって今日の来館者、君たちだけだもーん。アッハッハ」って。皆様、こちらの博物館、今が足の運び時かと（笑）。ぜひ、真心こもった手厚いツアーをお楽しみ下さいマセマセ～。

Next section; the first and second wars broke out, and Morocco became a place of interest (remember the movie “Casablanca”?). Therefore, many airmail & military-related mail stamps are found here. The museum exhibit continues more to contemporary stamps, and some of them are considered “high-tech stamps” such as <fragrant stamps> or <stamps that pray national anthem>. Wow!

その後、第一次＆二次と戦争が始まると、モロッコの地は世界各国の注目の場となるわけですが (映画「カサブランカ」の世界ですねぇ）、いろいろな意味でエアメイルやミリタリーメイル関係の切手をみるのが興味深かったです。まだまだ続く展示会場には、モロッコがデザインしてきた切手の数々や、＜香りがしてくる切手＞や＜音楽が奏でる切手＞なんていうハイテク切手もあったり。

The museum also showcases some historical documents and postal artifacts. It was a great opportunity to learn how Morocco has developed while understanding the history of  its postal system.  I have to say, this is a museum worth visiting for only 10MAD – Especially it includes your visit to the nearby Moroccan Bank Museum (Bank Al Maghrib Museum). How generous are they???  No wonder they didn’t care about my -0.1MAD stamp situation. Please enjoy the part of Moroccan National Anthem through one of their stamps. 🎶

他にも、郵便関連の歴史的な文書や遺物もたっぷり。モロッコの郵便システムを通して、この国がどのように発展していったか、を学べる良いチャンスでした。10MADではもったいないくらい価値のある博物館。近くにある銀行博物館にも同じチケットで入れるという、、、すごく太っ腹ですねぇ。だから、私の足りなかった0.1MADも気にされなかったんですね。その寛大な心に敬意を表します。そして、切手から聞こえる国家のメロディが素敵。

“Amazing Grace”all over in Rabat on Palm Sunday

パーム・サンデーにAmazing Graceを

One thing I miss tremendously after 2 months of living in Agdal, is singing in a choir. I have been singing since I was 10 years old – and, singing in a choir has always been a very special way to connect with my faith (I am Lutheran). I knew there were a couple of choir groups in Rabat, but my lack of French/Darija knowledge has discouraged me from contacting any of these groups. I don’t want to be their burden when directions are conducted in those languages… I should learn the language first, then maybe try the audition… I think.

アグダルに住みはじめて2ヶ月。だいぶ恋しくなってきてるのが、クワイヤーで歌う事。考えてみたら、10歳からクワイヤーに入っていて、クリスチャン（ルーテル教）としてクワイヤーで歌うのは、自身の信仰生活ととても強いつながりがある気がするんですよね。ただ、まだまだフランス語もダリジャ語もままならずなもので、現地のクワイヤーに入る事にためらいがある。。。まずは、言語習得かなぁ、と思っております。

So, when I found this flyer for the concert, I begged my husband “Can we PLEASE go?? S’il vous plait??” でも、こんなチラシを見たら「ね！ね！行こうよ、ね？」と旦那さんにお誘いもうしあげました！

🎶🎵OH MY GOODNESS! 🎵🎶

Not only are they absolutely talented musicians, but also, they are just fun-loving & sweet people! And the cathedral was packed with an audience with happy faces. 🥰🥰

本当に音楽性の高いそして優しく楽しいみなさんの演奏！そして会場となった教会は観客でいっぱいでした！

One group in particular touched my heart – Chorale Harmonize Choir from Rabat. Their repertoire was big, from Un Poco Loco to Cold Play’s Viva La Vida, but when I heard their Amazing Grace, I was in tears. I felt all my senses relaxed, almost like I was in my mother’s womb. But, in a way, it gave me some sort of permission to feel sad, because I missed singing so much. 

その中でも特に魅了されたのが、このハーモナイズ・クワイヤーのみなさん。ピクサーの曲からコールドプレイの曲まで幅広いジャンル、その中でも、このAmazing Graceを聴いた時には、もう涙がポロポロと出ちゃいました。身体中の神経が安心したのか、まるでお母さんの胎内にいるようなあったかい気持ちに。と同時に、「うぅぅ、歌いたいなぁ😢」と悲しさも感じたり。

Anyway, I didn’t expect that I would be able to listen to Amazing Grace, in Morocco, on Palm Sunday. What a treat! I thanked God, I thanked the Harmonize Choir, I thanked the director of the choir, I thanked my husband (who took time off to come with me!).

どちらにしても、モロッコで、Amazing Graceをパーム・サンデーに聴けるなんて、と、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいになりました。💕 ハーモナイズ・クワイヤーさんにも、そのディレクターさんにも、そして、嫌な顔せず一緒に来てくれた旦那さんにも。

There were three other choir groups; two from Casablanca, and another one from Rabat: Chorale Nagham de Casablanca, Chorale Polyphonique de Casablanca, Ensemble Vocal a Chœur Joie Rabat. They were all so wonderful, and the whole 2 hours passed so quickly.  At the end, Chant Commun was led by Mr. Thierry Thiebaut.

他にも３つのクワイヤーが集まり、2時間のコンサートはあっという間に終了！最後はまとめ役のティエリーさんリードによる全員合唱で終了。本当に素敵な日曜日の夜となりました。

Like I said, I miss singing, especially in a choir setting… so much. There were times Olof and I would put together duet performances at our home church in Seattle (Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Shoreline) for special occasions. Here, I am going to share the video of Olof playing ukulele, and me singing Swedish Christmas song (in English & Swedish), “Jul, jul, strålande jul.” I also recorded a couple of songs with Indian producers, and this one is on Spotify (sung in Japanese).

やっぱり、クワイヤーが恋しいです。シアトルのホームチャーチでは、時々旦那さんと一緒にデュエットもしたり（彼がウクレレ／私が歌）。クリスマスに、スウェーデンの伝統的な曲を英語／スウェーデン語で歌った時の動画を残しておきます。そういえば、インドのプロデューサーさん達と日本語で曲を作ったのは良い思い出。

I still remember what my choir master once said: “When singing in a choir, it is more important to listen to how OTHERS in different parts sing, rather than how well YOU sing. You will learn to co-exist, and that makes great harmony, and that also makes you sing better.” I feel like this is the lesson I am learning in everyday life in Morocco. People here are very good at this “co-existing” lifestyle, which creates strength and a positive future in society. I am so lucky to have good teachers around me.

とあるクワイヤー・デイレクターさんの言葉が心に残っています。『自分がどれだけ上手に＆間違わずに歌っているかより、周りの違うパートの人たちの声に耳を傾けて。そうすると、ハーモニーが上手に重なって、一人一人がもっと上手に歌えるようになるから。』これは、私が今、モロッコ生活で毎日感じている事でもあります。こちらのみなさん、この”周りの人に目や耳を傾ける”が上手なのかな、と。生活の中に、程よいハーモニーがあるように感じます。そこからいろいろ学ばせてもらっている気持ちです。

Surely, “Amazing Grace” was shed to everyone yesterday, at beautiful Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Rabat, thanks to the power of music. And, I should study hard! on my French & Darija!!!

音楽の力がSt. Peter’s Cathedral にいる全ての人たちに恵みを与えてくれた日曜日の夕方。いつか、こちらのクワイヤーにも入れるように、フランス語＆ダリジャ語、もっとがんばろう！と思いました。

Oh, and today’s Le Chat de Jour is a song from Cats 😽😽 (Memory) by A Chœur Joie Rabat.

If You are Happy and You Know It – Adult Beverage Situation in Agdal

私達の幸せな老後につながる、モロッコの酒屋さん

I wrote about La Cigogne on this blog before. I found out that the same company produces a beer called “Stork” – yup, Moroccans love their storks 🙂 Since I am allergic to alcohol, I asked my husband to do a taste test.

以前、こちらのブログで、La Cigogneのソーダについて書きましたが、同じ会社が出しているその名も「Stork (やはり”コウノトリ”）」というビールがあることが判明。私自身はお酒を飲まないので、旦那さんに頼んで実験台になっていただく事にしました。

​I sent him to get the beer from our neighborhood liquor store – but why did he get two cans? お試し用に購入してきて〜と、リカーストアに送ると。なぜ２つも買うんだろう？

And, he got these “Flag Spéciale” (x 2) , as well. Hmm? By the way, this brand is made by the same company. Pure Moroccan beer also🇲🇦!

しかも頼んでもないのに、違う種類のFlag Spécialeというビールも２つ登場。ちなみに、このブランドも同じ会社の製品。

They are kind of cute together, non? 一緒だと可愛くないですか？

Okay, so, I asked him how he liked the taste! で、早速ですが、ご感想を！

“Yeah, well, as expected, it tastes like beer in Sweden. It’s not that delicious, but it’s nice to have.” – I don’t really understand what he meant, but he probably meant that it is a kind of beer that you’d certainly know that it’s beer, and you are grateful that it exists in your vicinity. In short, its existence matters more than its tastes. Or, maybe, it’s like a same concept as “If You are Happy and You Know It” song. You can clap your hands because there is the taste of beer and there is a liquor store (which is open). 👏👏

「うん、まぁ、予想通り。スウェーデンのビールって感じだね。あんまり美味しくはないけど、ビールの味がして、そこにあるといい、って感じね。」よくわからない回答ですが、つまり、『あったら感謝する味』なんだと思います。たぶん、『幸せなら手を叩こう』の歌詞と同じコンセプトなのかなぁ、と。パンパン！👏👏

To tell you the truth, before moving to Morocco, some of my friends asked me “Are you guys going to be okay, can your hubby get alcohol there?” and I was really not sure what to expect. I myself was also a little worried that my Swedish husband, who enjoys drinking alcohol occasionally, would have some difficulties finding his “adult beverages” around, making new friends to enjoy glasses of wine or beer with, or going out to those “establishments” easily…

モロッコに引っ越す前、何名かのお友達に「大丈夫なの？旦那さんあっちでお酒は飲めるの？」と聞かれましたし、実際、私も、お酒をたしなむスウェーデン系旦那さんが、イスラム社会の中でお酒が手に入りにくなる世界を過ごさないと行けなくなるのかなぁ？オオラフと一緒にお酒飲んでくれる人いるのかなぁ、そういう飲み屋さんみたいなとこに簡単にいけるのかなぁ、など、ちょっと心配していたのでした。

But, where we live (in Agdal, Rabat), there are 4 liquor stores within walking distance! One is only a two-minute walk from our apartment. It’s VERY dangerous. There are also many pubs/bars nearby (you can easily tell, because there is a bouncer or a man in a black suit standing at the entrance – avec easy-to-tell neon lighting). The Ramadan period when alcohol sales and drinking establishments were completely closed off seems like an illusion now. I still cherish the great impromptu trip we took, crossing the border into Spain by ferry⛴, just to get his “adult beverages” 🤣 – Good time…

が。こちらラバト、特に、私達の住むエリアには、徒歩圏内に４つも！リカーストアがあります。そのひとつなんて、徒歩２分です。パブ／バーもありありです（入り口に、バウンサーや黒服さんが立っているのですぐわかります。怪しいネオンサインも確実です）。かなり危険地帯です。あの、「お酒販売＆飲み屋さんは完全密封」だったラマダン期間が幻のような状態となっています。あの時は、わざわざお酒購入のために、フェリーで国境越えまでしてスペインへ向かったのは、今でも良い思い出となっております（来年に向けて、学びました；笑）。

Come to think of it, it is so much easier to get beer, wine, or and any other “adult beverages” at anytime, than getting things such as, postcards of Rabat, fresh tofu, natto, or even plastic wraps with cutters. Oh well. But, as a person whose ultimate goal is to become a perfect wife I am so happy to see my husband go to his favorite liquor store to get his “adult beverages” here. I clap my hands. 👏👏

考えてみれば、私の欲する納豆や、ラバトの絵葉書、新鮮なお豆腐、カッター付きサランラップよりも、お酒を購入するのは簡単、というわけです。旦那さんが嬉しそうにお酒を買いに行く様子を見れるのは、良妻賢母を目指す私として、ひじょうに嬉しく＆幸せな毎日です。なので手を叩きましょう👏👏。

How to mail postcards from Rabat (with Inshallah)

モロッコからMission Impossibleな絵葉書を送る

I guess I am old-fashioned. I love sending/receiving postcards with exotic designs of stamps and pictures unique to each country. I especially like imagining the sound when the postcard hits the recipient’s mailbox – ‘plop!‘ 

こんなに世界がオンラインで繋がっている世の中ですが、なぜか今でも「絵葉書」を書くのが好きです。その国ならではのデザインがほどこされた切手を貼ったり、そのハガキが郵便ポスト届く時の「コトンッ」っという音を想像したり、、、そういうのが好きなんですよね。

So, I thought it would be fun to mail postcards to my family and friends from Rabat. I got stamps from Poste Maroc and I was ready to get postcards! 

で、ラバトからも絵葉書を送ろうと、まずはこちらの郵便局で切手を購入。王様いっぱいで、準備万端！では、ハガキをゲットしましょう〜

It wasn’t an easy task – I couldn’t find any postcards featuring Rabat. Pourquoi (why)? Not at the train station, which should be the gateway to Rabat, not in the Medina, or not even at Moroccan souvenir stores – I can only find argan oil related stuff, magnets, camel plushies, etc. Really, pourquoi? 

と思いきや、ない。ラバトの絵葉書が売っていないんです。なぜ？街の玄関である駅の売店にも、メディーナにも、モロッコ・グッズを売っているお土産屋さんにも、どこにもない。アルガンオイルやマグネットやラクダのお人形はあるのに、絵葉書はない。。。😔

Then, J’ai une bonne idée – let’s go to the touristy area. Maybe there is a vendor who sells postcards for gaijins! Sure, Kasbah, here I come! “Kasbah of the Udayas“, and even Tom Cruise came to film for one of his Mission Impossible movies (number… ?). Result? 

そこでアイデアが💡-「観光地に行けばいいんじゃない？そこでガイジンさん相手（私みたいな）にベンダーさんが絵葉書売ってるかも。そうだ、カスバに行ってみよう！」と。カスバとは、ラバト内でも有数の観光地で、17世紀に作られた城塞地区。中に入ると、まるでギリシャにでもいるような青と白の壁に囲まれた雰囲気で、眺めも良い人気の場所です。あのトム・クルーズも映画撮影でやってきた場所ですし、きっとここなら絵葉書の一枚くらい、と思ったら。。。

🥳I found it! あった、あった！🥳

But, none of them was Rabat one. They are Marakesh, Fez, Casablanca, or even Meknes… No Rabat postcards. Again, pourquoi? 🤨 So, I had no choice but to buy these neutral ones.

ですが、あるのは、ラバト以外の街ばかり。カサブランカ、マラケッシュ、フェズ、メクネス、他。なんでぇ🤦🏻‍♀️しょうがないので、ニュートラルなこちらを購入。

However, at one of the art dealers nearby, I found these unique postcards – of course, they were sent to my kids. 

アートショップで、こういうのを見つけてしまい、心を大きくひかれたため、つい購入（さっそく子供達のもとへ）。

Here is my “Mission Impossible”:

I found out the exact prices of postcards after I sent out mine to the US and Japan. Nice Sidi at Porte Maroc said that I put two of the 4.10MAD stamps and one of the 9.80MAD stamps on each card, so I did. Three Mr. Kings on each postcard looked really good (Peace be upon him, Mr. King). HOWEVER – to my parents in Japan – the price is slightly different… 18.10MAD postage needed (to the US, it is 16.30MAD) ?

郵便局の優しいお兄ちゃんに教わった通り、アメリカへ送るための絵葉書に4.10MADの切手を2枚、そして、9.80MADの切手を1枚貼って送りました。「ハガキ郵送はきっと世界共通だよね！」と勝手に理解して、日本の両親にも同じように送ってしまった後にこのような事実を知り、、、

Oh, dear! It was short on 0.10MAD! Ahhhhh! But, it’s too late – all my postcards have been dropped, there is no way I can take them back. Are they going to terminate the delivery? Is Tom Cruise going to help me somehow? This is a true “Inshallah” moment, I have to say. 

つまり、0.10MAD(約1セント）足りていないんです、、、。どうしよう、これで郵送不可になるのかしら。もうすでに投函してしまったし、私的にはもうすでにミッション・インパッシブル。トム・クルーズさん、助けてくれるかしら？まさに、インシャーラな世界、結果は後ほどお知らせします。

Storks bring you good luck and nostalgic flavor

コウノトリさんが持ってきてくれる幸運と懐かしい味

Storks. In Japan, they are known to bring good luck, and they are also known to transport babies, which is also a sign of good luck (most of the time, I’d like to believe). I am not sure if this delivery system is a good luck from the babies’ point of view, but I am not going to argue with it here. 

日本では、幸せを持ってきてくれる鳥として知られているコウノトリさん。そしてくちばしの中に赤ちゃんを運んできてくれるという、これも幸せ（だと思います）のお役目度が高い鳥さんなのですが、赤ちゃんにとってはどうなのかなぁ。キツキツそうですよね。

Now, a visit to Chellah is really something special in Rabat. While its ancient archaeological Roman ruins and Muslim royal necropolises are impressive to see, there are so many storks all over the site, nestling and chilling as if they are the kings & queens of the area. Some say they are the “Guardians of Chellah“, but, to me, they look more royal and noble than just guardians. And they talk to you! The sound they make – absolutely stunning! I actually counted how many were there – 73 – without binoculars. Maybe more, if I was with members of Wild Bird Society of Japan (note: I appreciate them especially because my parents both worked for NHK, and WBSJ always supports NHK’s signature show, Kohaku Uta-Gassen. I know, I know, such a personal feeling here…😝). さて、ラバトにあるシェラでは、古代ローマ時代の遺跡とその後に作られた古ーいマリーン朝の城壁跡が見れちゃう世界遺産。それだけでも一見の価値はあるのですが、そこで出会えるのが、たっくさんのコウノトリさん！＜シェラの守護者たち＞と呼ばれているらしいですが、気高く堂々とした風貌は、守護者というよりは、まさに王様＆お妃様達、という感じです。そして、コウノトリさん達の声！これがまたなかなかの発声音でして、、、あまり聞かない音なのでびっくりします。肉眼で数えてみても、73羽いました。日本野鳥の会のみなさん、お呼びしたいです（紅白の後にでも、ぜひ）。ちなみに、シェラやラバトの歴史などについてもっとよく知りたい方、こちらのブログ（英語）もどうぞ。お友達のモハメドさん、Moroccan Food Tourのガイドさんでもあり、ライターさんでもあり、食通さんでもあり、、、すごく勉強になります。

Speaking of storks – Cigognes in French – I am presenting, a very Moroccan soda. さて、コウノトリはフランス語でCigognes。その名前のついたお飲み物について；

This soda has a long history, and it’s a rather iconic drink for Moroccans, I heard. It was first introduced by Brasserie Glacière Internationale in 1929 (one year after Mickey Mouse was born!) to satisfy non-alcoholic drinkers during the protectorate period. However, the 70s came, and the soda couldn’t fight against big names such as Pepsi or Coca-Cola. La Cigogne had to be withdrawn from its production line officially in 1997.

このソーダは、1929年に発表され（ミッキーマウス君より1歳年下ですね）モロッコ人なら絶対知っている銘柄だそうです。要は、保護領時代に、お酒を飲まない方達をターゲットに作られた、と。当時は大々的な人気だったそうですが、70年代に入るとペプシ社やコカコーラ社の製品には勝てず、、、で、その後も売れ行きはのびず、1997年には製造を完全中止となる事に。

Sad, sad, sad… なんとしたことか。😭😭😭

However, the Renaissance arose due to high demand! “La Cigogne“ returned to shelves around hanut and supermarché in October 2024!

しかーし、ルネサンスです！Cigogneソーダは、2024年の10月から、晴れてモロッコのお店の棚に再度並んでおります！

Goût – taste? Hmm, even though I am not Moroccan, I felt somewhat nostalgic. It tasted like Mitsuya Cider. Maybe because I heard about the history of this special soda? or Hitesh (because), I like the logo; notice, there is Flag of Japan hiding, yes?

さて、そのお味はというと。私はモロッコ人ではないですが、なんというか”懐かしい味”？日本のミツヤ・サイダーを思い浮かべる味、がしました。このLa Cigogneのストーリーを知っていたからでしょうか、それとも、このロゴ・デザインをよく見ると、日本の国旗が隠れているからでしょうか？？？

Storks are back! They will bring good luck to everyone! More babies are delivered (maybe)!

このソーダを飲めば、コウノトリのごとく、きっとみなさんに幸運もやってくるでしょうし、赤ちゃん達もやってくる（のかな）？

What I found in search of delicious Tofu in Morocco

モロッコで美味しいお豆腐を求めた先に見つけたもの

“We are What We Eat” -that is totally true. Food can impact our mood, our lifespan, and maybe our relationship with others. Although I embrace different kinds of food and a variety of flavors around the world, I definitely feel that my Japanese DNA requires “goût Japonais (Taste of Japan)” occasionally.

『人間を形づくるものは食なり』とはよく言ったものですよね。食べ物によって、考え方や生き方、そしてコミュニケーションも変わっていくような気がします。私はいろいろな国のいろいろなお味が大好きですが、やはり、日本人DNAを持つ体、時として、”日本のお味”も恋しくなります。

But… mais… walakin… it isn’t that easy to obtain authentic Japanese groceries here in Rabat. That’s the hard truth. Well, no, let me put it this way; I have been spoiled in Seattle & Barcelona, where I could just get anything Japonais for the ingredients. So, it’s time to change my perspective. I should learn to be more creative (for example: let’s make my own Natto!).

しかーし。ここラバトで日本食材を調達するのは簡単ではないのがわかってしまった、辛い事実。というか、すぐ近くで日本食材が手に入ったという、今までのシアトルやバルセロナ生活では、かなり甘やかされていたのだと思います。ではでは、ちょっぴり視点を変えて「手に入るものだけでクリエイティブに修正した日本食！」にしようかな、と（納豆も自分で作るしかないか、、、）。

Or, I should appreciate anything I can find at the local stores if it is Japanese… even something like this – 例えばこういうお豆腐だって、ありがたいものです; A mysteriously bubbly tofu – and a very, very small one, for 50MAD (about $5). My heart didn’t go bubbly. But, if this is what I have to live with, I am okay with it. I will just look forward to a time when I get to eat good tofu somewhere. Inshalla. 🙏

この不思議な、泡立ちのいい？穴いっぱいのお豆腐、しかも小ちゃくて5ドルほどのお値段。私の心は正直バブリーにはなれないお豆腐ちゃん。そっかぁ、これからはこの”泡立ち豆腐”との生活かぁ、シアトルか日本で美味しいお豆腐食べればいいね〜と思っていた矢先に。。。

Then, I found this amazing yet ambiguous (btw, I like “ambiguë” in French) information: “Petit marché des produits chinois avec des prix raisonnables, Vous pouvez le consulter chaque mardi à Rabat près du consulat du chine (small market selling Chinese products. Reasonable Price. Every Tuesday near the Chinese Consulate – 小さなマーケットが毎週火曜日に中国領事館近くでオープンします。値段もリーズナブル).”

Well, there is only one way to find out☝️! I bet they have tofu there! So, my husband and I took a nice 40mins morning walk to the Chinese Consulate building, passing the Embassy of Japan (yay!) on its way, and… 

これは行ってみなければ！と思い、旦那さんと40分かけてテクテクお散歩。途中、日本大使館前を通り、テンション上がりました❤️

Hooray🙌 There IS a market! Petit Marché, it is! あった！あった！Yes! There is Tofu! Also, lots of asian veggies, condiments, pork, etc… I became SO BUBBLY!!!!!🎉🫧お豆腐はもちろん、アジア系のお野菜や調味料、餃子の皮や豚肉さんなど充実しておりましたぁ。

I met three wonderful Japanese ladies here as well – who are “Rabati” Senpai to me – they are very friendly & kind, to welcome my husband and me in this neighborhood. Merci & Chukran & Arigato Gozaimasu.

そして、マーケットで日本語ではなしかけてくれた美女３名、私にとっては大せんぱいのすてきなラバティの方々に出会えました。みなさん、フレンドリーで優しくて🥰。火曜日の朝の楽しみが増えてしまいました❣️ありがとうございます。

Marché Sidi (Sidi = Master in Darija – I decided to call him) said “Yup, we come every Tuesday. Yup, we would like to open a real store in Rabat soon (he already has a shop in Casablanca). Yup, please wait. Yup, it’s 120MAD today.” He is goooooood.

マーケット・マスターいわく、「毎週このようにオープン・マーケットできているけど、もうすぐお店も開く予定だからね〜。待っててねぇ〜。今日は120ディラハムねぇ〜。」と。いいなぁ、Sidi。

I got there around 10:30am, and I fel it was a bit too late. There were already lots of people and some “hot & popular” items in those plastic boxes became low at that time. Also, the line for the payment (cash only) takes time, so there was a long que. Kind of like Disneyland – it’s a small world after all. Next time, I will probably try to be there earlier. 

10時30分頃に到着したのですが、ちょっと遅かったかも。既にたくさんの人、箱の中のアイテムはだいぶ減って来ていたようだし、そしてお会計（現金のみ）はディズニーランド並みの長蛇の列。次回はもっと早く行こう！と心に決めました。

These are the items we purchased for aujourd’hui – not bad for 120MAD, no? I love that their tofu makes sure to tell us that it IS tofu, by its stamp. I feel bubbly again with such unnecessary details.

今日の勝利品🏆。12ドルでこれは素晴らしすぎるぅ。そしてお豆腐にしっかりと別に必要ないのに「お豆腐です」と押印されているところにも、さらにバブリーな気持ちになる私。🎊🛀

And, they became un dîner japonais incroyable pour la nuit! Sidi’s tofu was so yummy! こちらはさっそくお夕食の材料となり、夫婦そろって美味しくいただきました。もちろん、マスターのお豆腐は最高です-Bnin Bezzaf (so delicious) !
