Pagal Chidiya (crazy bird) in Chennai

クレイジーバードが楽しんだ＜ダクシン・チトラ＞

Chennai has a lot to offer, and this trip surely has been very enchanting! While “the boys” were having fun at the conference sharing their super-smart brains🧠, a very kind and beautiful Mrs. Vandhana, wife of the organizer, took me to this lovely place called “Dakshin Chitra.” 

チェンナイはとてもカラフルな街、いろいろな観光名所があります。旦那さん達が学会でとーっても難しい材料化学や物理学の討論をしている中、とても優しくて綺麗なオーガナイザーの奥様🥰が＜ダクシン·チトラ＞と呼ばれる施設に連れていってくださいました。

Dakshin Chitra is a community service project operated by a non-profit organization called Madras Craft Foundation. Through this facility, they wish to promote and preserve the cultures of the South Indian region, with emphasis on Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhara Pradesh, Telenanga and Karnataka. Each area presents traditional architecture and historical/religious relics. 

ここは、南インドの５つの地域文化（タミール·ナドゥ、ケララ、アンダラ·プラデェシュ、テレナンガ、そして、カルナンガ）を、それぞれの建築物や歴史的、宗教的な遺品を集めて紹介している、非営利団体＜マドラス·クラフト財団＞による地域奉仕プロジェクト。広い敷地内に、伝統的な家々がならび、各地域の文化の違いを、まるでお宅にお邪魔しているような感覚で学べました。

There are plenty of hands-on activities! So, I tried this “grinding rice” experience, with a traditional stone mill. I am smiling because it was just for 3 minutes; imagine you need to do this for all the family every day, to make yummy dosa or idlii… I would not be smiling then. 

ハンズオン·アクティビティも豊富！タミール·ナドゥ地区ではお米を昔ながらの石臼を使ってひく体験などができました。これ、少量だったら楽しい体験ですが、毎日のドーサやイドリィのためにゴロゴロって大変な仕事ですね、きっと。

Of course, a place like this is not complete without a photo spot! I bet Dakshin Chitra is a popular place for school excursion trips. 

子供の頃に、日本の”明治村”を訪れましたが、なんだか雰囲気が似てました。そして、こういったテーマパークには必須の＜顔出し写真＞。もちろん、出します（笑）！きっとここは修学旅行にもばっちりでしょうねぇ。

There were also many introductions to the religious teachings at each pavilion. For example, this is God Kamadhenu. She has the body of a cow, but you can also see the feathers like a peafowl and legs like a horse. Apparently, she is said to be the nurturer of all living things, as well as to provide whatever the owner (of the live stocks) would wish for. Such a special God!

この地域に広がっているヒンデゥーや他の宗教の教えもたくさん紹介してありました。例えばこのカーマデーヌと呼ばれる神様。牡牛の体ですが、孔雀のような羽に、足は馬っぽい。いろいろな動物のパーツが集まっているんですが、ようは全ての生物の養育者らしく、また、人の願いを叶えてくれるというありがた～い神様だそうです。

Mrs. Vandhana was so sweet, so knowledgable, and so fun to be around😍. I immediately fell in love with her! By the way, I asked to see if we could stop at a shop to buy “Mango Yakult”… Ta-da! She made my wish come true! She is my Kamadhenu 🙏! 

私のたっての希望『ヤクルトのマンゴー味が買いたいんですが。。。』にもこころよく対応してくれるバンダナさん。彼女は私にとってカーマデーヌさん～💖

We were all happy to attend the Conference Banquet at Taj Fisherman’s Cove, which really reminded me of Sheraton Waikiki 🏝:) My husband got to try local favorite; Tamil Nadu’s Ultra Premium Exclusive Beer, “British Empire” 🍺 – sounds pretty powerful, isn’t it? Everyone here has a PhD (or working toward to obtain), with their IQs probably five times higher than mine, but they were all welcoming and sweet to me – even though my Hindi nickname is Pagal Chidiya (Crazy Bird)🐥. I am so grateful!👏

学会主催の盛大なバンケットに参加させてもらいました。旦那さんはタミール・ナドゥご自慢のローカルビールも楽しめてニコニコ🍻。ここにいるみなさんは私のIQの５倍くらいある博士さんや、これからPhDを取る秀才さんばかりなんですが、ヒンディー語のニックネーム＜Pagal Chidiya (クレイジーバード）🐣＞な私なのに、どの方もとても優しくしてくださいました。感謝でいっぱいです！

Extra highlight! I got to have a coffee with Mr.Prasanaa, who is a great artist, an amazing model, and a passionate organizer of art sessions in Mumbai. He happened to be in Chennai for his business trip, so we were able to meet up – thanks to the Instagram feed! Humdullila 🙌 for social media these days… 

今回は、アーティスト／モデルを通じて知り合った、プラサナーさんがムンバイから出張されているということで、思いがけずコーヒータイム☕️！いやぁ、SNSの良いところを実感しました。

Krishna’s Butterball and Handsome Apostles

クリシュナのバターボールと、イケメン聖人たち

I came to Chennai accompanying my husband to attend a conference at IIT Madras. I feel very lucky to be able to experience Tamil Nadu’s charms, especially the people! They are all so kind and their smiles are very sweet. Their faces bright up every time they smile, as bright as the Madras sun – and I love to smile back at them, too🌞. 

今回の旅は、旦那さんのIITMでの学会参加に同行という形でやってきましたが、はじめてのチェンナイに魅了されております。とにかく、人が優しい！そしてみなさんの「笑顔」がめちゃくちゃかわいいのです。太陽のようなピカピカ光った笑顔、こちらも自然と笑顔になっちゃいます。

Some sightseeing I got to do in Chennai…さて、チェンナイで訪れた素敵な場所をいくつか、、、

First, San Thome Church. It is located in the Marina Beach area, and its breathtaking white color of the cathedral and the ocean’s blue give wonderful contrast. What’s so special about this cathedral? Saint Thomas, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, is resting here. We were welcomed by many paintings of good-looking saints inside the church. Kind of like BTS of saints. Well, my favorite was, “slightly-Mel-Gibson-alike” Saint John. 

まずは、San Thome Church。イエス様の十二人の使徒の1人、聖トーマスが眠っていると言われているこのサントメ聖堂は、マリーナビーチの青い海の色と対照的な真っ白な教会。中に入ると、、、あらまぁ、ハンサムに描かれている使徒のみなさん！私的に1番のイケメンは、聖ヨハネかと（メル·ギブソンみたいぃ）。

I love the lights behind Jesus in the sanctuary. The neon remind me of Diwali – very Indian. なかなかイエス様の背後のライティングが、ディワリのようでいい味だしてました🪔。 

Saint Thomas was believed to have arrived in Madras in the first century for his missionary work, then he was martyred around the year 52AD. Therefore, the apostle’s tomb is located and worshiped tremendously 🙏.

インドで普及活動をしていたと言われる聖トーマスは、このチェンナイ（その頃はマドラス）で西暦５２年ごろ殉教死、よってこちらに彼のお墓があるんですね。

He is resting peacefully, and here again, the disciple looks pretty handsome. 静かに眠る聖トーマス。やはりイケメン。

There were also relics of St. Francis Xavier, possibly some bones. He is a well-known saint to Japanese people, as this saint played a key role in the spread of Christianity around Japan in the 16th century. 

日本の方にはよく知られている(世界史の教科書にも載っていますよね) 宣教師として日本にやってきた聖フランシスコ·ザビエルの聖遺物、たぶん骨の一部などもありました。

We also visited Mahabaliprum, a UNESCO-registered site. It is a large area filled with old temples and monuments built during the Pallava dynasty. There were huge granite temples, and they date back to the 7th or the 8th century. Yup, very old! From a far, they almost like big sandcastles – but if you get closer, there are so many cool details in the carvings. Pretty impressive 🤩.

次に訪れたのがユネスコ指定も受けている、マハバリプルム。こちらにはパラバ朝時代（3世紀~9世紀）に作られた、大きな大きな石や花崗岩をくり抜いたヒンデゥ寺院があります。遠くから見ると、よく作られたサンドキャッスルのようですが、近くでみると、たくみなデコレーションがほどこされていました。

In the western world, people used to paint or make statues to teach the story of Christianity in the old days. Here, Indians took harder materials to work on. Carving the huge stone. It was not an easy task, I bet. Some of the temples drifted away by the tsunami, and some carvings are still “work-in-progress.”

西洋の文化ですと、古い時代に字が読めない人達にもキリストの教えを広げるために、絵を描いたり彫像を作ったりしましたが、こちらインドでは、もっと難しい方法「石に刻む」と。すごいなぁ。津波などで海の底に眠ってしまっているお寺もあるらしく、まぁ、彫刻途中の状態の場所もあったり、、、

Say hello👋 to the divine couple of Shiva and Parvati, special name, Ardhanarishvara. In case you are busy worshiping them separately, how about the form of Half-Shiva & Half-Parvati? Very convenient. Surely, it represents the mixture of masculine/feminine energy in one (very powerful!) and it also teaches us that marriage is an auspicious thing. Don’t take it for granted! Good thing to be reminded of, right? I was kind of curious, though, in French, should I use “Le” or “La” for this god…?

こちらの彫刻はなかなか見応えがありました。＜アルダナーリーシュビラ＞と呼ばれる神様で、体の半分がシバ神、もう半分がパブラッティ女神。”一心同体のご夫婦”とはまさにその通りで、男性のエナジーと女性のエナジーがひとつになった、とてもパワフルな神様です。いつまでも夫婦仲が良いようにお祈りしつつ、「この彫刻の冠詞は、フランス語だとLe? La?」と気になりました。

My personal highlight of the visit was this: Krishna’s Butterball 🧈. No, it is not a turkey for Thanksgiving. It is actually a huge, 6m x 5m stone, which weighs about 110kg. It barely touches the ground, yet it has never moved for the last 1200 years or so. One of the world’s wonders for sure, and nobody knows how it keeps its balance. Apparently, while enjoying his favorite food, Butter 🧈 , Lord Krishna threw a piece of it onto this area. I guess he was very hungry to consume this much butter. Since he is God, I guess again, he doesn’t have to worry about high cholesterol. I am jealous. 

そして個人的な目玉は、これ、クリシュナのバターボール！直径約１０メートルの巨大な石なんですが、これがどういうバランスを保っているのか、ぜーんぜん動かないんだそうです。話によると、クリシュナ神が召し上がっていた大好物のバターのかけら、がここに落ち着いたらしい。あらまぁ、クリシュナ神はとても食いしん坊さんなんだ。神様はカロリーも気にせずにバター食べれるんですね、羨ましい。

Me, being Bahubali with the butterball. I noticed Indian ladies are very strong – they only need to use one arm to raise the stone. Humdullila. 

もちろん、ポーズをとっての写真撮影はかかせません。女性たちが’ヒョイッ’と片手で持ち上げている感じ、いいわぁ。

”L♥︎ve your Intestine” – Yakult Heaven in India

『腸を愛しましょう』インドでヤクルトいっぱい！

Vannakam (hello) from Chennai! We flew in from Frankfurt by Lufthansa. Did you know they always display fresh flowers on their flights? Mr. Andre was so nice to let me have this beautiful yellow gerbera daisy 🌼 when disembarking 🙂 Once I stepped outside the airport, this flower and I both became pretty dehydrated – it is hot here🥵! I have come to India many times, but this was my first time in Chennai. Apparently Chennai’s “Madras Heat🔥” happens from March to June, with temperatures higher than 40 degrees every day with muggy, humid air. So, July is a bit cooler, according to the locals here. Oh dear… 

チェンナイから、バナッカム！フランクフルト経由だったのですが、ナイスなルフトハンザのCAさんから、機内に飾ってあった生花🌹をいただいて降りた空港、もうジワアァァという暑さでした。インドには何度か来ていますが、チェンナイは初めてです。毎日３５度以上で暑い＆蒸し蒸しです。でも、チェンナイの”本気の夏”は3月から６月だそうで、４０度を超える暑さが続く日々は＜マドラス·ヒート🥵＞とも呼ばれるほど。と、比べると今は涼しいらしい。。。

However, thanks to Taj Hotels, I am grateful for the comfortable air-conditioned accomodation. And, my favorite part of a hotel experience in India is, of course, Khaana (food)! Especially breakfast! Taj Coromandel even offers live music for Le petit dejouner, and South Indian flavors such as Dosa, Idli, Pongal are all amazing. But, the highlight of Indian Hotel Breakfast, for me, is Yakult! and so many of them. Humdullila! Apparently, their majesties Emperor Akihito and Express Michiko of Japan stayed here – I wonder if they had some Yakult, too…

Tajホテルズさんのおかげで、エアコンの効いた過ごしやすい日々に感謝しつつ、大好きな＜インドのホテル朝食＞を楽しんでおります。朝から生演奏も提供しちゃうタージ・コロマンデルさん、さすがぁ。ドーサ、イドリ、みんな美味しいんですけど、私にとっての目玉は、なんといってもヤクルト！「好きなだけ取っていいのよお～」という感じで並んでいるんです！幸せすぎる！ハンドゥリラ～。退位された明仁天皇様＆美智子皇后様もお泊まりになったコロマンデル、ヤクルトお飲みになったかしら。

Yakult seems very popular in India. Maybe it’s because the word Yakult in Sanskrit, means “Liver”. This word also appears in the teachings of Ayurveda, so as a brand name, Yakult definitely had an advantage when this tiny probiotic drink first launched on the Indian market in 2008.

インドってヤクルトの人気が高いそうです。それもそのはず、だってYakultという言葉、サンスクリットだと意味は”肝臓”のLiver。アーユルベーターの教えの中でも登場するこの言葉、それじゃあインドのみなさんには親しみやすいでしょうねぇ。

And, Yakult Ladies are working hard all over India! About 300 ladies deliver Yakult, door to door; see, each small Yakurt bottle contains about 6.5 billion Lactobacillus cases strain Shirota, which is said to support your intestinal regulation properly. But, temperature is a key – these Shirota strains will die over 10 degrees centigrade. Soooo, Yakult ladies are very important as they can deliver it as quickly as possible and keep it cold in their special bags! Romba Nandri (thank you very much in Tamil), YL!

2008年からインド市場をはじめたヤクルトさん、インド全土にはあの＜ヤクルトレディ＞さんが三百人ほど働いていらっしゃるとか。１本あたりに６５億個の乳酸菌シロタ株が眠っていて、その効能が整腸によい、けれど１０度以下に保たないとこの大切な株が死んじゃうんですって。なので、冷たいまま素早くお届けできる＜ヤクルトレディ＞さんのお仕事ってとっても重要なんでしょうね。毎日デリバリー、おつかれさまです！

This “Light Mango” Yakult is only available in India! It makes sense, as India is the number one producer of mangoes in the world. I definitely want to taste this new flavor while I am here – and so happy to know that one of my favorite Bollywood actresses, Sanya Malhotra is the brand ambassador. 

インド限定商品の＜ライト・マンゴ＞、これは滞在中に絶対飲んでみたいぃ～と思っております。低糖＆低カロリーというのも嬉しいし、お気に入りの女優さんサニャ·マルホトラちゃんがブランド·アンバサダー、っていうのもさらに嬉しいです。

Do you find it a bit challenging in “department of number 2💩” while traveling? Well, I do😤. That’s why I pack dried prunes as a traveling snack🎒. But, if I can drink Yakult or two (or three!) every day, my “department of number 2” experiences no problem. Humdullila! Merci beaucoup, Yakult! You are Japan’s pride🎌! Oh, and look! There is a Sumo tournament aired on TV! Come to think of it, India is a lot closer to Japan, than Morocco or the US to Japan. With unlimited Yakult 😍and NHK world-Japan, I am becoming slightly nostalgic for Japan😿. 

旅行中は便秘がちになりませんか？私は旅先にはドライプルーンを持参して食べるようにしていますが、このヤクルトちゃんが毎日飲めるならもう、ぜーんぜん心配ない！うふふ。ありがとう、ヤクルト！日本の誇り！と1人感動していたら、テレビでお相撲が観えて、、、あぁ、やっぱりインドって日本に近いんだぁと感無量🥹（いや、ただ単にホテルにNHK-Worldのチャンネルがあっただけでしょ？というツッコミはなしで）。

Fly Royal Air Maroc!

美しい＜機内安全ビデオ＞

When you fly a commercial airplane✈️, your journey always starts with either a safety video or a demonstration by cabin attendants. I love watching each airline’s safety video; recent trends seem to be, each airlines is never shy about showing off their culture as a company and as a country in the video, therefore, they are all different in special ways. 

飛行機ではかならず「機内安全上の注意」ビデオ、あるいは、CAさんによるデモンストレーションをみますよね。それぞれの会社、それぞれのお国柄、それぞれの文化が反映されるビデオを見るのは、なかなか楽しいものです🛩。

And, it’s important for us, passengers, to acquire all the knowledge necessary in case of an emergency. One way to ensure that is to attract people on board to pay more attention to the safety video, right? So, let’s make it more attractive! Make it more entertaining! 

そして、「いざっ」という時に必要になる知識を得ておくのは、搭乗する人みんなの大切なお約束。動画に興味を持ってくれる人が多ければ多いほど、安全上の注意への考慮も高まる気がします🦺。

Since moving to Rabat, we have been flying Royal Air Maroc often🇲🇦. Their safety video has been renewed this year, and it is quite attractive and entertaining 🙂 It really captures the beauty of Morocco, in each city, with amazing culture and hospitable people in just less than 4 minutes. 

ラバトに越してきてから、ロイヤル・エア・モロッコを利用することが増えましたが、このエアラインが今年から放映している＜安全上の注意ビデオ＞、なんとも言えない良い雰囲気です。モロッコの美しいエリアや、奥深く美しい文化が上手に組み込まれている素敵な4分間弱の動画、YouTubeでもご覧になれますので、お楽しみください～。

We will be flying Lufthansa 🇩🇪and Singapore Airlines 🇸🇬this time for our trip to India. It’s been a while to see their safety videos – I am very excited 🙂 

インドへ向かう私たちは、今回ルフトハンザ航空とシンガポール航空を利用します。この２社は久しぶりの搭乗、どんな機内安全ビデオが見れるか、楽しみです🤗。

I am 16 apples tall – fun of learning French

私は＜１６りんご身長＞です。

Almost every day, I come across a French word or French expression I find interesting while studying. Some of it makes me wonder what on earth French people are thinking, yet I know they don’t care how I struggle, so I just keep on learning. That’s life. That’s French. C’est la vie.🤷🏻‍♀️

フランス語を学んでいると、面白いな！と思うことに出会ったり、なんでそういう発想になるの？と不思議になったりする毎日です。時にはイライラしますが、それがフランス風、セ・ラ・ビの精神です。

For example, potatoes.🥔 In French, it’s pomme de terre. Now, in French “pomme” means apple🍎, and “terre” means land or even earth. So, potatoes are “apples growing on the land👩🏻‍🌾” according to the French people. Bien sûr (of course), I guess…🤔

ジャガイモ。Pomme de terre (ポム·ドゥ·テール）と言いますが、pommeはりんご、terreは地面とか陸地、つまり、「地面に育つりんご」がじゃがいもとなるようです。ほほぉ～。納得するような納得しないような。。。🙄

Then, I thought of pomegranate. It has “pome” in it, so somehow it must be related to apples? Apparently, “granate” has a meaning of “having many seeds.” This one makes so much sense!💡 However, in French, people just call it “grenade.” Fine. 😑

ふと、ザクロ、英語のpomegranateも何かりんごと関係があるのかな？と思い調べてみたところ、ラテン語のルーツによると、granateには”たくさんの種がある”という意味があるらしいので、これも「ああ、なるほどね～」と理解。でも、フランス語ではザクロの事は短くgrenadeとだけで呼ぶらしいです。いちいちポムを言わない、ということです。😶

Adam’s apple 🍏 on men’s throats is, “pomme d’Adam” – Ha! I can accept this easily. Since the word “pomme (pome)” is to describe any kind of fruit in general (according to the dictionary), the thing Adam and Eve ate could be an apple, it could be a lemon, it could be, possibly, a banana?🫒

そうそう、のど仏はフランス語だとPomme d’Adam。ちなみに、りんごは古～い昔からこの地球に存在したフルーツのようでして、よって、Pomme (Pome)には＜果実＞というひとまとまりな意味合いがあるようです。やっぱり、アダムとイブが食べた果実って本当にりんごだったのかしら、、、？バナナ🍌の可能性もあり？

A cute expression in French with apples would be, “Haut comme trios pommes”; meaning “short person”, “small child”, or “no big deal.” It literally translates as “the height of three apples.🍎🍏🍎” Well, that’s really too small for a human, but again, it’s my job to accept.👩🏻‍🎓 Now, if you want to know more about “Apple Height Measurement Technology” I have someone I would like to introduce here; 

フランス語の表現で「背が低い」「ちいさな子供」あるいは「大したことない事」なんて時に使うのが”Haut comme trois pommes.” ようは、＜りんご3つ分の背の高さ＞というイディオムなんですが、この＜りんご身長＞で思い出すのが：

Oh Hello👋, Hello Kitty! ハローキティ！

Did you know, Hello Kitty’s the height of 5 apples (and she weighs the same as 3 apples)? キティちゃんって、身長がりんご5つ分だって知っていましたか（そして体重はりんご3つ分らしい）？

So, I am about 16 apples tall – how about you? Let’s not talk about the weight, shall we? このテクノロジーを使うと、私は約＜１６りんご身長＞です。体重に関しては無視、ということで。みなさんはいかがでしょう？

My husband says “I feel that I can speak French more smoothly when I am drinking (French) wine.🍷” Okay, that’s nice. Moi, I don’t drink alcohol, so my “adult beverages of choice” is this: Poms. It’s an apple flavored soda available in Morocco. D’accord, I will drink a glass of Poms and hit Duolingo now. 

私の旦那さんは、「僕は、ワインを飲んでる時の方がフランス語がスラスラ出てくるんだよね～」と。アルコールを飲まない私にとっての＜大人のたしなみ飲料＞、そのひとつがこれ、Pomsです。りんご風味のモロカン·ソーダ🇲🇦。よし、今日はこれを飲みながら、フランス語のドゥオリンゴしてみま～す。

Natsumatsuri in Rabat & Japan Fair in Seattle

ラバトの夏祭りとシアトルのジャパンフェア

We have been having such lovely summer weather in Rabat – temperature wise, it’s high of 26/27, low of 19/20. Seriously, there is nothing to complain about, and I actually feel bad and feel rather “spoiled” when I hear the news about heat waves in other parts of Morocco🇲🇦 or in Europe🇪🇺. Of course, in Japan🇯🇵, too.

気持ちの良い、心地よい夏日の続くラバトです。モロッコの他のあつーい場所🥵やヨーロッパや日本での熱中地帯の方達に申し訳ないくらい、とても過ごしやすい気温の夏。甘やかされてしまっております。

Anyway… I found this Instagram post. そんな時に目にしたこのインスタ。

Oh dear, I really want to go to this Natsumatsuri (Summer : Natsu + Festival: Matsuri )! My husband and I have been busy getting ready for the conference in Chennai🇮🇳 now, but, you know, we need a break and hey, the event location is near “George Clooney Barber”💈! And, I get to wear my yukata👘 – which I made with my Nana 👵🏼 many years ago.

あっらぁ、これは行きたいです～。チェナイ学会出発前でいろいろ忙しいのだけど、気分転換に良さそうだし、場所は旦那さん御用達＜ジョージ·クルーニー理髪店＞のすぐ近くだし、久しぶりに、おばあちゃんと一緒に縫った浴衣でも着ましょうか🪷？

We entered, and Wow! Sugoi! Festive! 入ってみたら、わ！フェスティブ！

Okonomiyaki, Takoyaki, Yakisoba, kakigori, and even Osomen! Muzyen!! I overheard that the staff at the Japanese Embassy were there helping to cook this yummy food. Two months ago, I was assisted by the nice people at Japanese Embassy here in Rabat, in order to obtain some of the legal documents (such as a birth certificate in French) and I remember how kind and helpful everyone was at the Embassy. Big Arigaito goes to the Japanese Embassy in Morocco, for their Omotenashi & delicious food!

お好み焼きに、たこ焼きに、焼きそばに、かき氷に、おそうめんまで？すごーい！そして、お話を聞かせてもらったところ、こちらの在モロッコ日本国大使館の方々もお手伝いで作ってくださっているらしい。なんて心温かいイベントなんでしょう。実は以前、出生証明書などの書類でこちらの日本国大使館の方にお世話になったのですが、みなさん本当にお優しくて感動したのを覚えています。「日本って素敵な国🎌！」と思わせていただけた、そんな大使館のみなさんのご対応に感謝でいっぱいでした。

The ambassador of Japan in Morocco, Honorable Monsieur Nakata was there, too? How nice! あ、大使様もいらっしゃっていたんですね。とても素敵な大使様ですね。

At Natsumatsuri, we used this stamp card (you advance-purchase each stamp with 10MAD) to buy food or to try the activities, such as Yo-yo sukui, Karaoke, and Darts. One of the fun games, which my friend Sumi-chan encouraged us to try, was the “Bamboo Warrior”🎋. A friendly game, although, it had a potential to become a “husband-wife battle.⚔️” Did it affect our relationship? Not at all 😝! We are still happily married. Hamdulillah 🙏.

イベント内は、スタンプを押してもらったカードを使って（ひとつ１０ディルハム：1ドルくらい）食べ物を購入したり、夏祭りっぽいアクティビティをしたり、、、その中でも、この<Bamboo Warrior >のゲーム⚔、お友達のすみちゃんに勧められて夫婦で対決の運び！勝敗はいかに、、、？

What a wonderful way to spend a summer afternoon in Rabat, to enjoy “Natsumatsuri” and a hint of Japanese flavors and Omotenashi. 『モロッコで夏祭り体験』ができるとは! おいしい日本の味やおもてなし、に再度、感動させていただく良いお時間でした🍧。

As a bilingual emcee🎤, one of the events I have worked on annually for 8 years in Seattle was the Japan Fair. At this two-day event, which attracts tens of thousands of visitors, I would introduce various Japanese cultures and entertainment on stage (often, with silly hats 🤠) . There are usually about 100 vendors to shop from, and many workshops and lectures for visitors to participate. As an emcee, it was a parade of preparation, exhaustion, excitement, and satisfaction! And I learned a lot from being “Team Japan Fair.” 

ところで、シアトルでは８年間＜ジャパンフェア＞というイベントのバイリンガル司会🎤をしていました。数万人の入場者でわきあいあいになる２日間のイベントでは、様々な日本文化やエンターテイメントをステージでご紹介したり（時にはかぶり物🎩と一緒に！😂）、100くらいあるベンダーさんが会場いっぱい、ワークショップやレクチャーなども充実。司会の身としましては、準備と緊張と感動のオンパレードで、本当にいろいろ勉強させてもらった業務でした。ジャパンフェア運営部の皆さんとの時間、懐かしいなぁ。

Japan Fair in Seattle is always held around the Tanabata – the Star Festival🌌. I will not be the host on the stage this year, but, like the Hikoboshi and Orihime of Tanabata👩🏻‍❤️‍👨🏻, I hope that Japanese culture and American culture will come together, and everyone at the fair gets to have a fabulous time! I am sending lots of love💓 from Morocco to Seattle on July 12th & 13th for their successful, fun-filled weekend at Meydenbauer Center. If you are in the area, please come and enjoy the event! Also, the staff and volunteers of Japan Fair, Gambatte🤞!!

いつも七夕🌠の頃に開催されているシアトルのジャパンフェア。私は今年の司会はしませんが、七夕のひこ星さんとおり姫さんのごとく、日本とアメリカの文化が深くふれあい、そして楽しい＆おいしいイベントになるよう、モロッコから願っています💖。今年は7月12日＆13日、メイデンバウワーセンターで開催、お近くの方、ぜひ行って楽しんでくださいねぇ～！そして、運営部のみなさん、がんばって💪！！

No Rice, No Life

モロッコで、＜ごはんの国の人＞が行き着いた炊飯器

Rice is important. VERY important. It’s not that I eat rice every day, but if I want to eat rice, I NEED to have my rice – and it is Japanese, sticky rice🇯🇵. Not Jasmine rice or Uncle Ben kind of rice. It is in my Japanese DNA and I don’t care which passport I have – nothing is going to change my love for white sticky rice🍚. 

＜ごはんの国の人＞なので、お米は大切です。２週間に１度くらいの割合で食卓にあがるお米なんですが、やはり日本のスティッキー·ライスは「食べたくなったら食べたい」ものです。ジャスミンライスや、アメリカのお鍋で作るパサパサなお米ではない、日本のご飯はやっぱり美味しい🍙。

So, as much as eating rice is important, making rice is also important. When we lived in Barcelona🇪🇸, this Joseph & Joseph M-cuisine’s small microwave-style rice cooker worked perfectly. It is the right size for just the two of us, and it makes pretty good rice within 15 minutes – in the microwave. 

アメリカに住んでいる時は象印様🐘の炊飯器で。そしてバルセロナの時は、この小さな電子レンジ用の炊飯器が大活躍してくれました。2人だけの生活ではこのサイズがバッチリだったし、１５分ほどのチンッで美味しく炊き上がってしまう簡単さに感動💕。

However… the cooker had an unfortunate incident – I must have put a wrong setting in microwave, and, it became, hmmm, “wrinkled.” It was a sad, sad day😭. It still works, it still makes rice, and it can still be used as a steamer also, but, the wrinkled container has been telling me “I am ready to retire soon…”

しかーし、モロッコに来てからとある日。私の手違いだったと思うのですが、この炊飯器ちゃんに”シワ”がよってしまったんです（泣）。まだ使えるといえば、使えるんですが、なんだかずいぶんと疲れ果てているような「もう、リタイアさせてくださいなぁ」と言われているような❤️‍🩹。

We have this option, too; an electronic pressure cooker. Yes, it makes rice also – but they tend to make the rice too soft. I’ve talked to the pressure cooker, sweetly🗣, that it doesn’t need to give too much pressure, but I think it contradicts the whole concept. Maybe it’s good for making porridge?

一応、圧力鍋もありまして、これでご飯も作れるんですけどね、なんだか柔らかすぎちゃうんです。圧力鍋さんに「そんなに圧力かけなくていいのよ〜」と言っても、それは無理ってものなんでしょう。なので、お粥専門、となりつつあります。

SO, we decided that it was time to purchase the ULTIMATE “Rice Cooker”!!!!! 🙌じゃあ、ここはもう、いっちばん性能良さそう＆自分達の暮らしにあった炊飯器を買おうではないか、と決断！

Voici! Meet our new member of the family; the one and only, a cute little rice cooker with extra features of porridge maker/hot pot machine/steamer/slow cooker/ keep warm! 

ジャジャーン！お披露目させていただきます。こちらが、炊飯／お粥／火鍋／シチュー／蒸し器／保温／全て可能な万能選手ちゃん。

We found this beauty on AliExpress. It’s made by Hyundai – a car company? Well, at least it says so. Anyway, that makes this rice cooker a Korean🇰🇷 product? But the manual came in Chinese🇨🇳. No English translation. Thanks to Google Translate, we have been able to utilize this great home appliance and I definitely ADORE this cooker😍. Not only can I make delicious rice, but I can also make variety of stews and soups, steamed veggies, pasta dishes… etc. My quality of cooking has gotten better, I think🆙.

AliExpressでみつけまして、ヒュンダイ社製って事は韓国製？でも、マニュアルは全て中国語でして、グーグル翻訳のおかげでやっと理解ができました。購入してから、ご飯を炊くだけでなく、チキンのクリーム煮を作ったり、お野菜をスチームしたり、パスタを茹でたり、、、キッチンでの時間がとっても楽しく＆便利になりました。

And the rice? AMAZING!!! 👍🏼This is just my opinion: when it comes to sticky rice, there is nothing more powerful than when people from China, Korea, and Japan come together and share knowledge about making the perfect rice. If there is a “Sticky Rice UN”🌎, these three countries will lead annual meetings, and bring world peace. Inshallah. 🙏

このヒュンダイちゃんで炊いたお米、もう、本当に美味しいんです～！それにしても、ご飯の炊き方＆美味しさ、に関しては、日本と中国と韓国の頭脳を合わせたら、怖いものないですね。もし＜ご飯国連🕊＞みたいなのがあったら、この３国はすごく良いリーダーになって世界平和をうんでくれそうです。インシャーラ。

You hear “When in Rome, Do as the Romans do.” I would have to say, “When in the world of sticky rice, Do as Chinese/Koreans/Japanese do.” 

「郷にいれば郷に従え」ではないけれど、「お米の世界にいれば、中国人／韓国人／日本人に従え」な気がしました🌾。

Indian Flavors in Agdal & “Panchayat” Season 4

大好きなアグダルのインド料理屋さんとインディアン・ドラマ

I wrote about my Abhishek in the last blog. Actually, there is another “Abhishek” I adore, but he is from the TV series📺, called “Panchayat.”

前回のブログで、私の＜バディ・アビシェク＞についてふれましたが、実はもうひとり、大好きなアビシェクくんがおります。『パンチャヤ』というウェブシリーズの主人公の彼でーす。

“Panchayat” is an Indian🇮🇳 drama series available on Amazon Prime, and my husband and I LOVE watching the show😍! The main character is an urban engineering graduate, Abhishek, struggling yet learning to live in a rural village in Uttar Pradesh as a secretary of municipal government (called Panchayat). I like its authentic and pure portrait of the people & the culture, gentle humor, and calm & uplifting storyline. It also helps me not to forget my Hindi (now that I am learning French and Arabic). 

『パンチャヤ』とは、インドで制作されているドラマで、今シーズン4までがアマゾン·プライムで視聴可能。エンジニアリングを学んだ若者が就職した先が、ウッタル・プラデッシュ州の農村地帯に属する、冴えない田舎村の地方自治体、そこでの秘書業務だったのですが、そこで起きるいろいろな出来事がドラマになっています。なんとも言えないのどかさとあたたかいユーモア、のんびりしたペースの中で繰り広げられる、心温まるストーリに釘付けな夫婦でございます。私にとっては、今、フランス語とアラビア語が入ってきて、忘れてしまいそうになっているヒンディー語のブラッシュアップに最高のチャンスでもあります。

The last few nights have been “Panchayat Watch Party”🥳 at our home (for just two of us, but it’s still a party!). Panchayat has a unique way to connect its audience – it reaches our simple minds. Still, it has a powerful attraction. We are huge fans of Panchayat because it’s funny and it’s peaceful, but, to me, it also reminds me of my favorite Indian beta👦🏻, My Abhishek and where he is from – Kanpur, AKA, “The Manchester of India”🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿; yes, that’s what he says (but not what I believe).

というわけで、この『パンチャヤ』の新シーズンを今や、今やと待っていたので、ここ数日の我が家の夜は「ウォッチパーティー」化🪩。キャラクターもストーリーも泣けるくらいシンプルなんですが、その魅力はパワフルでして。。。たぶん、どこかしら親友アビの存在を感じたり、彼の出身地の雰囲気があったりするからでしょうかね。

I miss your chai, Sweta! Actually, I miss your poha, your roti, your aloo & gobi… everything you make!

Speaking of “Simple yet Powerful Attraction”, I was very attracted by sabzi (veggie) dishes, roti, and many cups of chai ☕️ captured in the show; therefore, a “Simple yet Powerful Craving” for Indian food has begun… Kya karna hai? (what should I do?) 🤨

＜シンプルかつパワフルな魅力＞といえば、このドラマで目にするインド料理に多大なる魅力を感じてしまう私。アビ達と住んでた頃の、あの香り、あの味。野菜とロティ、チャイ。あぁぁ、もうだめ、インド料理が恋しすぎる。どうしましょう～❓

Let’s go to Indian Favors in Agdal! 💡そうだ！＜インデイアン・フレーバーズ＞に行こう！

At Indian Flavors in Agdal (very close to Starbucks near Avenue de France) you can find many authentic Indian dishes, from veg to non-veg. I love their Chicken Lollipop, which comes with a refreshing mint sauce. My husband likes Chicken 65, and he always makes his head sweat. 

アパートから歩いて５分の＜Indian Flavors＞、トラムのAvenue de France駅からすぐ近くの便利な場所にあります。まずは前菜〜チキン·ロリポップは私のお気に入りなんですが、辛めがお好きな方はChicken 65もおすすめです。

I also love chaat, which means snacks, or street food in India. Samosa Chaat, Sev Puri, Dahi Vada…hmm, those are all mouthwatering. Among all the chaat dishes, I definitely like Pani Puri (or Golgappa) the best! My Abhi would make it when we lived together, and we would just eat, eat, eat…hundreds of them. I would really love to eat Pani Puri at a street vender whenever I am in India, but, I force myself from doing so as I have common sense as a foreigner. 

Pani puri wala in India. He is a hero in town.

私はストリートフード系が好きでして、サモサやセブ·プリ、ダヒ·バダ、などなど、ようはインドの＜３時のおやつ＞的なのが大好なんです。その中でもパニ·プリと呼ばれるのが大好物！よく私のアビが作ってくれて、わんこそばのようにガンガン2人で食べまくってました。これ、本当はインドの道端でオッチャンが売ってるんですけどね、私はインドにいる時はかたくなに我慢しています。お腹こわしたくないので。。。

Lekin-Walakin-However-Mais, at Indian Flavors, I can enjoy Pani Puri! Without any worries! Hooray! Humdullila!🙏 しかーし！Indian Flavorsさんなら、このパニプリも食べれちゃう！お腹の心配もなし！ハンデゥリラ！

Also, their Mango Lassi. It is, in my opinion, the BEST in the world. Kyon (why)? Because they use fresh mango🥭, not an overly-sweetened purée from the can, I think. It was so so so refreshing and a “power to the body and soul” kind of drink. Another Humdulillah.🙏 

そしてここのマンゴーラッシー。独断と偏見かもしれません、が、言わせていただきます。たぶん、世界いち美味しい。なぜか？フレッシュなマンゴを使っているから！缶詰の甘ーいマンゴピューレの味ではない、本当のマンゴーの味。体にも心にもパワー全開!💪なラッシーに、またもやハンデゥリラ！🙏

We enjoyed Paneer Makhni and my comfort food, Dal Tadka (split lentil with spices) last night. But other dishes like Butter chicken, Kadai Paneer, etc. Everything there is AMAZING 🙂 Oh, btw, they make their own paneer! I guess I am more used to the northern Indian flavor, but next time, I am ready to try their Hyderabadi Dum Biriyani for sure. Because, I found out that a chef at Indian Flavors is from Hyderabad – it must be really really goooooood (and I will order extra Raita or Dahi ki Chutney…). 

Their presentation is very artistic.

今回は、パニア・マクニと私のコンフォート·フード、ダール·タッカも楽しんじゃいました。なんと、パニアはこのお店で自家製だそう！すばらしい〜👏どちらかというと、私は北インドの味に慣れているのですが、実はシェフさんがハイデラバードご出身と知りまして、、、じゃあ次回は名物のビリヤニを、ライタいっぱいで食べたい～と思いました。きっと美味しいに違いない。🤤

Look at these three handsome amigos at the restaurants. They are much better looking than Bollywood stars on the TV screen in the back🕺🏻. They recently upgraded their menu and are all waiting for you to come and try the flavors. Chalo! Yallah! 

こんなハンサムトリオさんのいるIndian Flavors。ボリウッドの俳優さんよりはるかにイケメンです。最近メニューをアップグレードしたとか。モロッコでインド料理、珍しいかもしれませんが、すっごく美味しいですので、ぜひぜひ、チャロ！

I would love to see Mango Falooda on their menu…😝

We are off to Chennai soon for work, which means, the land of Idli and dosa awaits… Meanwhile, we will continue watching Panchayat Season 4.🫶

というわけで、お腹がいっぱいになった後は、また夫婦で『パンチャヤ』をみて楽しみました。実はもうすぐチェナイ出張がありまして、ワクワクしてる2人です。

Hello Morocco! Helloooooooo Abhi!

看板につられてマクドのパープル飲料：グリモスくんの謎

The billboard sign I have seen a lot lately… 最近目にするこの看板、、、

“Hello Morocco!” Oh, Hi! I feel like I have to respond 🙂 This is Grimace, one of the McDonald’s characters saying “Hello” to us. I am not sure if he is a famous mascot compared to Ronald McDonald, or Hamburgler, but I know that he has become the “lucky charm”🍀 of the New York Mets (MLB team in the US)🏟; since the day he threw the first pitch, the Mets have won seven games in a row! And made it to the playoff game. Coincidence? Maybe… 

「ハロー、モロッコ！」なんて言われちゃうと、なんか反応しちゃいたくなっちゃうんですが、これはマクドナルドのキャラ、グリモスくんですよね。あんまりメジャーなキャラではなさそうですが、最近アメリカではニューヨーク·メッツの＜ラッキー·マスコット＞になってるとかで（彼が始球式⚾️した日からメッツが７連勝し、プレーオフまで行き着いた、という事で）、ちょっと有名になったかも。

After all, the Mets were defeated by the Dodgers – yup, the team Mr. Ohtani is playing! Therefore, this silly video was made. 

あの大谷選手がいるドジャースに負かされてしまったメッツ。この動画のごとく、グリモスくんも泣いちゃったんでしょうかねぇ。

By the way, it seems that 80% of Moroccans are “NY Yankees” fans, according to the caps they wear🧢. Often I notice “Boston Red Sox” fans, or “LA Dodgers” fans, but the overwhelming majority of people here seem to enjoy being Yankees fans. Fine. I like their likely-to-be new mayor, too. Anyway, I would also love to encounter a “Seattle Mariners” fan someday! 

ちなみに、街をあるくと、モロッコの人はほぼ80％の確率でNYヤンキーズ”ファンのようです(笑)。みなさん、ヤンキースの帽子をかぶっております。なぜなのでしょう？時々、”Bostonレッドソックス”や、なんちゃってなのか”LAドジャーズ”も見ない事はないのですが、圧倒的に多いのがヤンキーズさん。”Seattleマリナーズ“さん、もっと頑張ろう！

So, this Grimace character. Apparently he was born in 1971, as a villain of McDonald’s world (McDonald’s empire? McDonald’s society? However you call it, I guess). He originally had four arms, and he would skillfully use those arms to steal all McDonald’s shakes from the store🥤! Oh, no! How evil!😈 However, he somehow saw an enlightenment, or he might have attended AA meetings, then he was able to have a change of heart 💓; or, a change of character. Grimace is now a good friend to all the kids in the world, while busy promoting blueberry-flavored purple drinks🫐. And, look! Magically, he now only has one set of arms! Where did those two arms go???

で、このグリモスくん。彼はなんと1971年生まれだそうです！そして、実は当初はマクドナルド界（と言っていいのかな）の「悪役」👺として存在し、４本の腕を持ち、いつもシェイクを盗んでいたのだそう。まぁ、なんて邪悪な！でも、なぜか心変わりしたようで、今では良い子のお友達、美味しいブルーベリー味のシェイクを愛する🫐、そして知らない間に腕も2本になっているキャラなのでした。

The special shake which Grimace promotes (it was quite popular in the US, and other countries, created some meme, too…) has finally arrived in Morocco🇲🇦! I don’t usually go to McDonald’s, but, since Grimace was polite enough to say “Hello👋” to me, I wanted to pay a visit and say “Hello🙋🏻‍♀️” back to him. That’s what a civilized person should do, I thought, then, I should also try this shake. I asked my sweet husband “I have a favor to ask… s’il vous plait. You know, it’s been hot, and I have been kind of curious about that purple drink. It would be a great topic for my blog, too. Don’t you think?” He went to the machine and ordered a 25MAD special shake for his wife 🙂 Humdulillah. 🙏

そんなグリモスくんの宣伝している、スペシャル·シェイク🥤。が、やっとモロッコにもやってきたようなんですね。日頃マクドナルドって行かないなぁ、食べないなぁ、な私が、ある日突然、旦那さんに「あのね、お願いがあります。あの、むらさきの飲み物ね。ちょっと飲んでみたいのね。今日、暑いしね。ブログのネタにもなるしね。」とお願いしちゃったという、、、優しい旦那さん、無表情😑でオーダー完了。

Ok, this shake is very sweet! Too sweet! Trop sucré! Hlow bzzaf! This wasn’t “Hello! Morocco!” – it was “Hello! High blood sugar!” An auntie like me should have said “goodbye” to this kind of drink.

そして出てきたのが、このシェイク！ひょえぇ～甘い！これは「ハロー、モロッコ！」というより、「ハロー 、高血糖値！」です。おばさんにはきつかったです。

Note: My favorite “Hello!” character AKA lucky charm (?) is my Abhishek. He is an indispensable existence to me. Abhi is the only person I allow to tell me that I am getting old or fat (as I also tell him so). We lived together, and we learned together. We fought together, and we cried together also. But really, we had so many laughters and so much love over the years. It goes beyond friendship and affection; he is our family. I am here to say “Hellooooooooooooo! Abhi! (I miss you!)”

付け足し：私にとっての「ハロー！」キャラ＆なくてはならない存在、は、アビシェク。一緒に住んだ時期もあり、彼や彼の弟君の結婚式にはインドに行き、家族ぐるみでのお付き合い。よく討論し、よく喧嘩もし、でもよく笑ってとにかくもう、友情／愛情を超えた家族の存在。この世でひとり、私に「太ってきた、老けてきた」と言う事を許している人物（同じことを彼にも言えるので）。「ハローーーーー、アビ！I miss you！」

“Do you like my hat?” or “Do you like my bread?”

美味しいパンと楽しい朝ご飯

Recently, I learned a new Japanese word. It’s “Rebe-chi レベチ”– it means “different level”, in other words, it’s an abbreviated term to describe something so amazing, or so outstanding, that you might think it’s at the next level. Japanese people love to shorten the words, so “Reberu(level) Chigau (different)” became “Rebe-chi.” Other creative versions include, “Dan-chi” for something one step above, or “Jige-chi” for being in a different league. They are all meant to complement something or someone, but, I don’t really feel comfortable using them… only because I am from the older generation, I guess. 

最近、新しい日本語を学びました。「レベチ」です。これは、「レベルが違う」という意味だそうです。つまり、レベルが違うほどすごい、秀でている、という省略用語だそうで、他にも「ダンチ（段違い）」や「ジゲチ（次元が違う）」という応用型もあるそうです。みんな良い意味での表現ですが、なんだかしっくりこない私はおばさん世代だからですね。

Anyway, I previously wrote about <the world’s largest strawberry shortcake🍰> made by a “Rebe-chi” pastissier from Morocco🇲🇦. But, today, I would like to introduce an incredibly “Rebe-chi” boulangerie (bakery/baked goods shop) near our apartment! 

以前、モロッコ出身の”レベチ”なパティシエさんによる＜世界最大のいちごのショートケーキ🍓＞についてブログしましたが、我が家の近くにもめちゃくちゃ”レベチ”なパン屋さん／お菓子屋さんがありまして、、、

Amoud! It sure has a kind of lavish ambience, so I had been a little intimidated, to be honest, for a while. It took us a few months to actually go in and try their goodies… 

アムードさん～。もう見たからにして美味しそうなブランジェリー。実は、ちょっと敷居高くてずっとトライするのを控えていた小心者だったんですが、じゃじゃーん！

Tada! Oh my, the brioche, croissants, and the loaf of hard bread… everything was delicious and top-notch! Clearly, I now have a problem – Amoud is located too close to our apartment.

あらまぁ、ブリオッシュもクロワッサンも旦那さん好みの硬めのパンも、全て最高のお味～。困った困った、また美味しい物に出会ってしまった。

The qualities of Moroccan breads, any baked goods, or cakes and tarts, are all really high. Rebe-chi, Dan-chi, & Jige-chi 🤩!  Perhaps it’s because the foundation of traditional Moroccan breadmaking, which is already outstanding, has been fused with some new knowledge and techniques by the French during their ruling period…?

モロッコのパンや焼き菓子、ケーキのレベルは本当に高い！レベチ、ダンチ、ジゲチ、とにかく美味しいのです。もともと秀でたモロッコの伝統的なパン作りの基盤と、フランスの支配下だった影響でつちかったノーハウが融合されたからでしょうかねぇ。

When it comes to bread, my husband and I seem to have different preferences. He likes more crispy loaves with some seeds in it. Something which goes with cheese. Very “white people” bread. Kind of bread that reminds me of the iceberg in fjord, and is strong enough to hit someone. I tend to choose brioche-like bread with a sweet taste and moist texture, that I can probably continue to eat even after I get dentures🦷 (I hope that doesn’t happen – Inshallah. 🙏).

西洋系のパンに関しては、旦那さんと私で好みが違いまして、、、旦那さんはやはり北欧系のちょっとパリッとした感じのローフ系がお好きのようです。フィヨルドの氷河を思い起こさせるような強さがある誰かを叩けるくらいのパン。私はどちらかというと、ブリオッシュのような、甘ったるい湿った感もある、総入れ歯になっても食べ続けられるようなパンを選びがち。

We were laughing at these “bread personalities” one morning, then I suddenly found myself playing with “Go, Dog. Go!”🐶 story (which we used to read with our children when they were young). 

ふと、このパーソナリティーの違うパンちゃんたちで、昔子供たちと一緒に読んだ『Go. Dog. Go!（日本語題名：”それいけ、わんちゃん！”』🐩ごっこをしてしまった朝。

It was just a silly morning – but I love silly mornings. 老夫婦のたわむれです。Hamdulillah. 🙏
