”L♥︎ve your Intestine” – Yakult Heaven in India

『腸を愛しましょう』インドでヤクルトいっぱい！

Vannakam (hello) from Chennai! We flew in from Frankfurt by Lufthansa. Did you know they always display fresh flowers on their flights? Mr. Andre was so nice to let me have this beautiful yellow gerbera daisy 🌼 when disembarking 🙂 Once I stepped outside the airport, this flower and I both became pretty dehydrated – it is hot here🥵! I have come to India many times, but this was my first time in Chennai. Apparently Chennai’s “Madras Heat🔥” happens from March to June, with temperatures higher than 40 degrees every day with muggy, humid air. So, July is a bit cooler, according to the locals here. Oh dear… 

チェンナイから、バナッカム！フランクフルト経由だったのですが、ナイスなルフトハンザのCAさんから、機内に飾ってあった生花🌹をいただいて降りた空港、もうジワアァァという暑さでした。インドには何度か来ていますが、チェンナイは初めてです。毎日３５度以上で暑い＆蒸し蒸しです。でも、チェンナイの”本気の夏”は3月から６月だそうで、４０度を超える暑さが続く日々は＜マドラス·ヒート🥵＞とも呼ばれるほど。と、比べると今は涼しいらしい。。。

However, thanks to Taj Hotels, I am grateful for the comfortable air-conditioned accomodation. And, my favorite part of a hotel experience in India is, of course, Khaana (food)! Especially breakfast! Taj Coromandel even offers live music for Le petit dejouner, and South Indian flavors such as Dosa, Idli, Pongal are all amazing. But, the highlight of Indian Hotel Breakfast, for me, is Yakult! and so many of them. Humdullila! Apparently, their majesties Emperor Akihito and Express Michiko of Japan stayed here – I wonder if they had some Yakult, too…

Tajホテルズさんのおかげで、エアコンの効いた過ごしやすい日々に感謝しつつ、大好きな＜インドのホテル朝食＞を楽しんでおります。朝から生演奏も提供しちゃうタージ・コロマンデルさん、さすがぁ。ドーサ、イドリ、みんな美味しいんですけど、私にとっての目玉は、なんといってもヤクルト！「好きなだけ取っていいのよお～」という感じで並んでいるんです！幸せすぎる！ハンドゥリラ～。退位された明仁天皇様＆美智子皇后様もお泊まりになったコロマンデル、ヤクルトお飲みになったかしら。

Yakult seems very popular in India. Maybe it’s because the word Yakult in Sanskrit, means “Liver”. This word also appears in the teachings of Ayurveda, so as a brand name, Yakult definitely had an advantage when this tiny probiotic drink first launched on the Indian market in 2008.

インドってヤクルトの人気が高いそうです。それもそのはず、だってYakultという言葉、サンスクリットだと意味は”肝臓”のLiver。アーユルベーターの教えの中でも登場するこの言葉、それじゃあインドのみなさんには親しみやすいでしょうねぇ。

And, Yakult Ladies are working hard all over India! About 300 ladies deliver Yakult, door to door; see, each small Yakurt bottle contains about 6.5 billion Lactobacillus cases strain Shirota, which is said to support your intestinal regulation properly. But, temperature is a key – these Shirota strains will die over 10 degrees centigrade. Soooo, Yakult ladies are very important as they can deliver it as quickly as possible and keep it cold in their special bags! Romba Nandri (thank you very much in Tamil), YL!

2008年からインド市場をはじめたヤクルトさん、インド全土にはあの＜ヤクルトレディ＞さんが三百人ほど働いていらっしゃるとか。１本あたりに６５億個の乳酸菌シロタ株が眠っていて、その効能が整腸によい、けれど１０度以下に保たないとこの大切な株が死んじゃうんですって。なので、冷たいまま素早くお届けできる＜ヤクルトレディ＞さんのお仕事ってとっても重要なんでしょうね。毎日デリバリー、おつかれさまです！

This “Light Mango” Yakult is only available in India! It makes sense, as India is the number one producer of mangoes in the world. I definitely want to taste this new flavor while I am here – and so happy to know that one of my favorite Bollywood actresses, Sanya Malhotra is the brand ambassador. 

インド限定商品の＜ライト・マンゴ＞、これは滞在中に絶対飲んでみたいぃ～と思っております。低糖＆低カロリーというのも嬉しいし、お気に入りの女優さんサニャ·マルホトラちゃんがブランド·アンバサダー、っていうのもさらに嬉しいです。

Do you find it a bit challenging in “department of number 2💩” while traveling? Well, I do😤. That’s why I pack dried prunes as a traveling snack🎒. But, if I can drink Yakult or two (or three!) every day, my “department of number 2” experiences no problem. Humdullila! Merci beaucoup, Yakult! You are Japan’s pride🎌! Oh, and look! There is a Sumo tournament aired on TV! Come to think of it, India is a lot closer to Japan, than Morocco or the US to Japan. With unlimited Yakult 😍and NHK world-Japan, I am becoming slightly nostalgic for Japan😿. 

旅行中は便秘がちになりませんか？私は旅先にはドライプルーンを持参して食べるようにしていますが、このヤクルトちゃんが毎日飲めるならもう、ぜーんぜん心配ない！うふふ。ありがとう、ヤクルト！日本の誇り！と1人感動していたら、テレビでお相撲が観えて、、、あぁ、やっぱりインドって日本に近いんだぁと感無量🥹（いや、ただ単にホテルにNHK-Worldのチャンネルがあっただけでしょ？というツッコミはなしで）。

You will never feel Blue in Chefchaouen

気持ちはブルーにならないブルーシティ: シェフシャウエン

There is a city called Leavenworth, about a 2-hour drive from Seattle. It’s a unique place to visit because, even though the city has nothing to do with German ancestry or strong relationships with German trade🇩🇪, the buildings, signs, everything (including Starbucks) are set in a Bavarian-style ambience. Therefore, the whole city would give you a feeling like “oh, did we arrive in Germany? Where is Octoberfest?🍻🥨” It was a deliberate effort to revitalize the city and attract tourism into this little village in the Cascade mountains – and, it worked💪!  

ワシントン州に”レベンウォース”と呼ばれる街があります。こちらは別名”ドイツ村”🇩🇪とも呼ばれているんですが、決してドイツ人の移民が多かったとかドイツとの貿易交流があったとかではなく、単に「観光客を呼ぶにはどうしたらいいか、、、。あ、そうだ！全てドイツっぽい街並みにしたら、みんな来るんじゃない？💡」という経済効果を狙った発想だったんですが、これが大当たり。

Chefchaouen, aka the Blue City🦋, apparently had the same idea. “What would attract people to visit our city…?” They decided to paint the whole city “Blue.“ I am glad that the municipal legislators didn’t decide on Purple or Yellow, personally. I like Blue. It’s a good color to feel relaxed & feel chill. Definitely a nice color on Instagram. I have read somewhere that the color blue in Chefchaouen also symbolizes the Jewish belief (it reminds them of heaven and god)🕍, or it even keeps mosquitoes away. All is good – all stories are appreciated. 

シェフシャウエンは、泣く子も黙るインスタ映えのするブルーシティ。聞いたところによりますと、こちらも実はレベンウォースと同じ流れだったようです。「街中を青い色に塗ったら、人が来るんじゃない？☝️」と。もちろん、この地にたどり着いたユダヤ系の方達にとって神聖な色だった青🕎、また、虫が来ないようにする作用のある青🦟、という話も聞きますし、それらもきっと正しいお話。どちらにしても、＜シャウエンの青＞はスンバラしいのです～。

Again, we had an amazing guide to show us around this beautiful city. As professional as he could be, Mr. Hazim seemed to know what color of clothes he should wear as a guide; all in white. See how cool he looks, and how easily we can find him in the blue walls (if we get lost)? He was so attentive and kind, and a lot of fun to be with. And so accommodating ☺️.

こちらでもナイスなガイドさんに恵まれた私たち４人。ハジームさんはさすがプロですね、ご自分の着る服装の色は”白”です。インスタ映えしますし、クネクネな青い道でも、見つけやすいガイドさんでした。どんな要望にも答えてくれ、歩くスピードも、必要に応じた休憩も、臨機応変に対応してくれる素晴らしい方でした！

We walked through their Medina, Callejon (stairway) El Asri, the Mellah (Jewish quarter), and the Kasbah (old castle) area. Some “photogenic” 📸 blue spots are not free – you are encouraged to pay 5MAD (about 50cents) or so. Worth it or not? You can decide. 

メディーナや古城を見たりしつつ、さすが観光地！場所によっては５ディルハムの「お写真料金」がかかるんですね。💸うふふ。

The whole city is small – but it has ups and downs, so you need strong legs🚶🏻‍♀️. The signs on the streets are Arabic, Spanish🇪🇸 (not French) and English. Hmm, exotique! 

街自体は2時間もあれば全部あるけるくらいの大きさ。ちょっとエキゾチックな感覚にしてくれたのは、壁のサインがアラビア語、英語、そしてスペイン語（フランス語ではない）ところでしょうか。

Our stay at Chefchaouen was at Place El Haouta. Walled-in area which was once used for a fish market🐟. Dar Kisania was located in the center of Haouta, and fully renovated! And the view from their rooftop, with substantial breakfast… just amazing! We could just stay there forever (that’s why we didn’t even try to do any hiking to the mountains in the heat – no need 🤣) And, I really enjoyed the view from the bathroom – too bad I had to close every time I took a shower🚿. But, I bet nobody needed to see me naked. Hamdullilah🙏.  

シャウエンでのお宿はDar Kisania。ロケーション1番で選んだホテルなのですが、ここハオウタという場所は元々お魚市場🍤だったそうです。最近リノベーションしただけあって、全てが新しくて最新の設備！フェスのリアドな気分から急に近代化した気分。そしてこのルーフトップからの眺め！さらには、お部屋のバスルームからもハオウタの楽しい雰囲気が覗けるんです。本当ならずっとこの窓を開けてシャワシャワしたかった（でも、きっと誰も私の裸は見たくないと思う🛀）。ハンデゥリラ。

The Blue Door in Issaquah

Another fun fact (thanks to my dear friend, Iyoko-san😍) is that the City of Chefchauen and the City of Isaqquah have been in a Sister-City relationship 🫶 for nearly 20 years! I heard that the replica of the blue door was gifted to Issaquah and located near its city hall. What was gifted to Chefchauen in return…? According to some sources, there SHOULD BE some “Salmon Sculptures” from Issaquah, but I couldn’t find them (yes, we searched). All I could find were these frogs 🐸 in the fountain. If you know where Salmon Sculptures from Issaquah are located in Chefchaouen, please let me know…

私のお友達、いよこね～さんからの情報によると、シャウエン市とイサクア市（ワシントン州の街）は20年近くにわたって姉妹都市提携を結んでいるのだそう。そして、青いドアのレプリカがイサクア市に寄贈されているらしい。では、シャウエンには何か来ているのかしら？と思い調べた所「サーモンの彫刻品が寄贈された」と。。。というわけで市庁舎周りを探してみましたが、見つかったのは、このカエルさん🐸。どなたか、シャウエンで鮭の彫刻を見た！という方、教えてください（次回、確認しに行きたいので）。

According to recent news, Morocco welcomed 7.2 million tourists in the first 5 months this year 📈. As a person who worked in tourism back in the US, I am very inspired and curious at the same time about how Morocco will grow in the future tourism. Morocco has so much to offer! So much to embrace! I hope you all visit here to experience the true meaning of “Marhaba.” 

最近のニュースで、2025年度1月から5月までのモロッコへの観光客数は720万人にもなったそうです。米国生活中は通訳業務としても観光業に携わっていたので、やはり、モロッコの観光産業の動きには興味があります。この国にはたくさんの見どころがあり、たくさんの感動があり、本当の意味でのホスピタリティがあると思います。

It is a rather unfortunate reality that people tend to look down on tourism compared to other industries. However, in my opinion, there is no other industry that can create such a big leap forward through consistency from the grassroots level to the whole society and the whole economy as tourism. While traveling, you are encouraged to use five senses, in addition to your brain and mortor skills, which lead us to deep learning experiences for both sides – the ones who host and the ones who visit. These experiences can become the core strength to create better future in any circumstances. Most of all, I love and I honor the fact that “it takes people; with smiles” (and maybe with blue-painted walls). 

残念な事ですが、観光産業というのは、他の産業と比べるとなんとなく下にみられがち。でも（個人的な意見ですが）、この産業ほど＜人と人のふれあい＞という小さな草の根の部分から、大きな社会的貢献や経済的飛躍をうむ事のできるツールは他にはないと思うんです。ホストする側にも訪問する側にも、いつもそこには五感や体力や頭脳を使った大きな学びがある。そしてなによりも、『人の心が作る産業ー笑顔が作る産業』である事；青い壁がある／ない、にかかわらず、です。

Four Clocks are better than One (wife)

4つの柱時計と＜最後のローマ人＞に出会う旅

From Fes, we went to visit Volubilis and Meknes with our wonderful driver, Monsieur Mohamed, and our friend and Meknes-based guide, the MIGHTY Mediha! We met her last year when we first visited Meknes, and immediately, we fell in love with her beautiful personality and warm hospitality. If you are planning to visit Meknes, Volubilis, Fes… you should totally ask her to be your fabulous guide! She is THE BEST 💯🫶!

そしてフェスからの小旅行、ボルビリス／メクネスへは、モハメド運転手さんと一緒に車の旅。メクネスでは前回訪れた時からの友人、メディハちゃんとも再会！彼女にガイディングもお願いしましたぁ。

He is “The Last Roman”

In Volubilis, another Mohamed, AKA “The last Roman🏺”, led us to look around the crazy number of Roman ruins on the site. Here, you can see the ancient Roman houses, mosaics and interior designs, infrastructure of the city, water fountains, Pantheon-looking architectures and sorts🏛, and their “shopping mall.” It was huge and well-preserved! Why did Romans choose such a place to live? Olives🫒. Yup, good production of olive oil was a big attraction for them. 

ポンペイやローマ、スペイン内のローマ人達の遺跡を見てきましたが、いやぁ、このボルビリスでの遺跡の保存状態の良い事にびっくり。そして「僕はココ出身、人は僕を＜最後のローマ人🇻🇦＞と呼ぶんだ」というモハメドさんによるきめ細かい説明のおかげで、たっぷりとたのしめました。なぜローマ人はこの土地を選んだか？それは、オリーブオイルでしたぁ。

Every time I get to visit ancient ruins, I always feel the same thing: “Humans in any culture, at anytime in history, wanted the same things: NICE THINGS. Nice food, Nice house, Nice life. And each civilization (that we could see as ruins) somehow succeeded in achieving those at certain level. But then, how come we haven’t learn to bring more “NICEness” to other human beings? Can we be nicer to each other? Are we still challenged in that department?“ – I guess civilization is hard. 

こういう＜遺跡訪問＞をする度にいつも思う事があります。結局、人間っていつの時代もどんな文化の中でもあまり変わらなくて「良い暮らし、良い食べ物、良い住み心地」を求めてきたんですよね。それで文明が発達してきた。でも、なぜか「同じ人間同士の良い関係」を築く事にはまだまだ、、、もっと発達したいものです！

In Meknes, we started with Couscous lunch by the golf course because it was Friday! Then we walked through the medina, learned about Damascene metalworks by local artisans, and also visited the Mausoleum of Moulay Isma’il, who ruled Morocco from 1672 to 1727 (until his death). He apparently wanted Luis XIV’s daughter, Marie Anne de Bourbon, to be (one of) his wife but that didn’t happen. Instead, Mulay Isma’il received 4 grandfather’s clocks 🕰 from Louis XIV. Good deal? My husband thinks so as “four clocks would probably be quieter than another wife in his life…” – he has a point, but I am not sure if it was a joke – maybe Hamda 🍋 (sour) joke…?

この日は金曜日！よってメクネスではクスクス·ランチをゴルフコース横で。その後は、名物のダマシン工芸をみたり、ムーレイ·イスマイール廊を訪問。ここにはお墓だけでなく、4つの大きな”柱時計”にも出会えます。実はこれ、イスマイール氏がルイ14世のお嬢様を自分の奥様(の’ひとり’）として迎えたい、とリクエストした際に、「ごめんねぇ～それはちょっと無理～」とお詫びの品だったそう。もうすでにその時点で４人奥様をお持ちだったイスマイール氏、この恋物語は叶わぬ物となりましたが、旦那さん曰く「奥さん５人持つより、４つの柱時計の音の方が静かでいいでしょ？」。的をついたその一言に笑っていいのかどうか、悩む私。。。

I like Meknes – it’s not as big as other Imperial cities, but it has its own charm. Beautiful Bab (gate) Mansur, sweet people (like Mediha!) and look at this, even Le Petit Paris🇫🇷! 

メクネス、好きなんです！他の王朝都市と比べると小さめですが、すごくチャーミングですし、このような美しいゲートに、優しい友達（メディハ！）に、そして、＜ミニ·パリス＞と呼ばれる貯水池エリアもなかなかキレィ～。

Monsieur Mohamed will now take us to the Blue City 🦋 – Chefchauen!お次はあの！青い街、シャウエンへと向かいます。

Fes with “S”, not “Z” – btw, “S” is for Saloon.

フェスでの楽しい時間（レッドライトなサルーンまで）

There are four imperial cities in Morocco – Fes, Meknes, Marrakesh and Rabat. “Imperial City” means that the country’s capital was located in one of those cities over the course of history. Current capital is, our beloved city, Rabat 👏. Pam and Gary wanted to visit other imperial cities as well, and why not?☺️ So, we all went off on a little excursion by our great national train system, ONCF🚈. 

モロッコには、４つの＜王朝都市＞と呼ばれる場所がありまして、ひとつはここラバト（現在の王朝が定められています）、あとはフェス、メクネス、マラケシュとなります。今回、パムさん＆ゲリーさんは、他の王朝都市にも行ってみたい！という事で、ラバトから国営鉄道を使って列車の旅～🚊。

In Fes, we stayed at Riad Sara. I wanted them to have an authentic Riad experience, and Wow! 🤩 it was just speechless! This century old house was once owned by a Jewish family, then now turned into a riad by a Moroccan family. Look at this courtyard… mesmerizing😍. Their service, amenities, location, everything was perfect! 

フェスでは、モロッコらしい”リアドでの宿泊”を体験してもらいました。ここRiad Saraは、ほんっとうに言葉にならないくらい美しいお宿、このコートヤードでいただく朝食はもうたまりません。元々はユダヤ系ご家族が100年以上前に建てた家、現在はモロカン家族の手によってリアドへと変わったそうです。サービス·アメニティ·ロケーションも最高で、フェスでは一押しのお宿。

We had a Medina area walk, with a little bit of “street food” time as well, thanks to a very knowledgeable local guide, Fatima. She introduced us to this “only in Fes” drink – Raisin Juice🍇. Yum! We visited the oldest university (in the world!), Al-Qarawiyyin, and Al Attarine Madrasa (school) . I think my IQ level got higher just by being there👩🏻‍🏫. 

フェスではファティマさんによるガイディングで「迷子になりやすい」と言われるメディーナを散策。美しい王宮を眺め、ストリートフードにもチャレンジし、そうそう、中でもこのフェス名物；レーズン·ジュースはラバトにお持ち帰りしたいくらいでした。世界最古の大学と言われているカラウィーイーン大学や、アタリン神学校にも訪れ、そこにいるだけでIQ値が上がった気分🏫。

Yup, he is explaining again… 😂

One place not to miss in Fes is the Chouara Tannery – the oldest & the biggest tannery in Fes. Smell? Yes, memorable👃🏻. Apparently, this distinguished aroma comes from the pigeon poops💩, which help the leather (Camel🐪, Cow🐄, Goat🐐, Sheep🐏 ) become soft because of its ammonia contents. Well, very organic. I felt a bit Oregonian. 

タナリーと呼ばれる皮なめし工房訪問は、フェス名物。”匂いがすごいよ～”と聞いていましたが、はい、その通りでした(笑）。ミントの葉っぱ🌱を渡されるんですが、そんなのでは足りないくらいのパワフルな香り。これは鳩さん🕊のフンから来る匂いだそうで、この中に含まれているアンモニアを使って皮を柔らかくし、色染めをする準備をするとの事です。オーガニックですね。

Some “adult beverage time” at British Saloon in Fes🥃. Didn’t feel particularly British, nor Saloon-ish, but it was nice. It was very red. It was fun.

フェスでの夜に、”ブリティッシュ・サルーン”なるパブでちょっとお飲みになる方達🍷。紅いライトが微妙に怪しいですが、まぁ、バケーション中ですしオッケー。👍🏼

Another place we tried (and we liked!) was <212 Pizzeria>. It was so close to our Riad, and the number 212 was “catchy” for us – it’s a country code of Moroccan phone number, AND area code of New York🗽 – Pastor Pam and Gary have lived and got married in New York, so it was our DESTINY to try this place. Camel burger was delicious & substantial (oh we didn’t try their pizza – oops).

+212は、モロッコの国番号☎️、そしてニューヨーク州のエリアコードでもある、、、これは何かのお約束に違いない！という理由だけで行ってみた『212ピザリア』（リアドから歩いて３分という理由も）。ここにはラクダさんのお肉で作ったハンバーガーがありまして、美味しかったですよぉ（ピザは食べなかったです）。

Our adventure continues… 旅はまだまだ続きまーす。

マラガ日記（パート３）：新しいカバンとコルドバへの旅

We did some sightseeing, too! First, the Alcazaba. This area was originally developed by the Romans (that’s why there is also a mini-coliseum, just like the one you would see in Rome), then later taken over by the Moors and turned into a fortress and a luxurious residential facility in the 11th century. So, once I stepped in, it was like “Oh, have I returned to Morocco🇲🇦?” 

マラガでは観光も一応しました（笑）。まずはアルカザバ。元々ローマ人が築いた土地に（なので、コロッセオなんかもあるんですよ。ローマの物と比べるとミニバージョン）、１１世紀ごろに入ってきたムーア人によって作られた砦、と、豪華な居住施設です。ですので、一歩城壁内へ入ると、イスラムな雰囲気まっしぐら。あら、モロッコに戻ってきたのかしら？と思うほど。

Beautiful gardens and breathtaking geometric ceilings… All the way to the top, we were rewarded with this gorgeous view of Malaga – it was worth climbing up in the heat🥵! 美しい庭園や幾何学模様の天井、暑い中、頑張ってテクテクと登れば、素敵な景色のご褒美です。

This is the Malaga Cathedral, AKA, La Manquita. As often happens in the area, this was a mosque turned into a cathedral in the 16th century. The interior is quite interesting; a mix of Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance. What caught my eye the most was this great painting by Mr. Enrique Simonet, “The Martyrdom of St. Paul.” The shining light there is all stunning (almost shocking!) and the composition is so captivating… I couldn’t move away from this painting for a while. 

そして、ラ·マンキータとも呼ばれるマラガ大聖堂。モスクだった場所が16世紀にカトリックの聖堂にかわり、内部はゴシック様式やルネサンス様式などが入り混じってる厳かな感じ。いまだに塔の部分はできあがっていない状態らしいですが、十分みごたえあり～。何よりも気に入ったのが、このエンリケ·シモネ氏の『聖パウロの殉教』。この光感、鳥肌が立つほど！そして目が離せなくなるほどの構図の素晴らしさ、、、私は好きな絵に出会うと動けなくなるのですが、ここでもやはり動けない病に。

Since Mr. Simonet’s painting was so amazing, that we decided to check out the Malaga Museum (Museo de Malaga) to see more pieces of his creation. The great thing about Malaga is everywhere is pretty much walking distance🚶🏻‍♀️! They organize their collections by the artists, not by the eras or the genres – so you can really compare each artist’s techniques and subtle differences, while making you feel like you are traveling back in time with the painters. The whole exhibition area was designed to experience “biography of each artist through looking at paintings”, I thought. 

あまりにシモネ氏の絵が素晴らしかったので、もっと彼の作品を生で見ておこう！と、マラガ美術館へ。こちらの美術館の良いところは、年代やジャンルや国別で展示を分けていないところ。アーティスト毎に作品をまとめてくれているので、巧みな技法やちょっとしたニュアンスの違いなどを比べられ、まるで画家と一緒に彼らの人生をタイムトリップしているような気持ちにさせてくれます。

Here it is, another masterpiece by Mr. Simonet: “Judgment of Paris” そして、シモネ氏のこれまた圧巻な『パリスの審判』。

Annnnd, we took one hour train ride to experience the Mezquita, a World Heritage Site in Cordoba!そして！どーしても行きたかったコルドバにある世界遺産、メスキータへ列車で1時間の旅！

This place was once the palace of an Islamic king with a huge mosque (even before, there was a Roman temple) , but now it’s Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption. The former minaret had become a beautiful bell tower, and the whole interior was… oh so mesmerizing. The beauty of the two cultures, two religions, and the complicated yet harmonious mixture of completely different design patterns, left me speechless. 

イスラム王の宮殿だった場所が現在はキリスト教の教会になっているのですが、その二つの文化·宗教·さまざまなデザインが美しく共存している素晴らしさに、「言葉を失う」という表現以外に何も見つかりませんでした。奥深い歴史のある建物なのですが、とにかく写真を掲載します。

Now, do you like his bag? My husband is not a “carrying a bag” person, but this bag was so unique and so funny, that he even had to get one at SuperSkunk at Malaga train station – well, I also urged him to do so! Isn’t that something??? (note: the store has NOTHING TO DO with marijana and we don’t smoke either. It’s like Spanish version of Frying Tiger.)

ちなみにこのバッグは、今回の旅行で旦那さんがゲットしたもの。あまりにユニークすぎて、おかしすぎて、日頃バッグを持たない彼もいきなり購入（私の絶賛プッシュもありましたが）。SuperSkunkというお店、なかなか良い物売ってますが、同じ銘柄でマリファナがあるそうです（聞いただけ）。

Bonus#1: I think it is because of that Viking DNA. Or, as my husband says, “there are only three days of summer in Sweden.” It seems that Swedes REALLY have the attitude of “if there is an ocean, I must go into it.” Here at the beach in Malaga, someone HAD TO jump in the water. For 5 minutes. Yes, by all means, Enjoy! 

番外編#1：スウェーデン人の気質なのでしょうか？夏が短い国の人だからでしょうか？「海があるなら入りたい」のが北欧の方たちのようでして。バイキングのDNAがそうさせるのかなぁ。はい、どうぞどうぞ、行ってらっしゃーい（あ、５分だけ？いいですよ、私は見てますので）。

Bonus#2: I met one of Telettubies at Cordoba station! He was drinking beer at noon. Way to go, Dipsy! 番外編#2: コルドバの駅でテレタビーがいた！お昼からビール飲んでた！さすがだわ、スペインのディプシー。

Andalusian Yumminess (Malaga Diary #2)

マラガ日記（パート２）：アンダルーシアで食べた美味しいもの

We had pretty hot days in Malaga – sometimes over 35 degrees🥵. So, we would always look for “shades” to walk, but, with some nice breeze and occasional cold beverages (or ice cream🍦), everything was grand! Speaking of “cold” items… This soup in Andalusia, called “Salmorejo”, was ridiculously delicious on a hot day! It is a very dense soup, as you would put tomato, garlic, olive oil, AND bread🥖 in a blender to make this yumminess. As for topping, some put chopped salami, tuna, or famous Jamón ibérico… Oh, it’s mouthwatering. 

マラガ滞在中、日中は３０度を越す日々でしたので歩く時はひたすら「日陰」を探しつつの状態。でも、心地よい風と冷たい飲み物があればすぐに身体はハッピーに。アンダルーシア名物のこの冷たいスープ🥣、サルモレッホと言うのですが、これがとっても美味しかった！ドロッとした感触は、トマトやガーリックと、オリーブオイルに加え、パン🍞も一緒にブレンダーに入れてスープにしているからなんだそう。これを冷やして食べる！トッピングはツナだったり、サラミだったり、名物のハモン・イベリコだったり、、、うーん、今でもよだれが出ちゃいます。

Also, fried anchovies! Just simple salt and lemon for flavor. Fried Mushrooms? Si! Si! The Andalusian way to eat eggplants is to add honey sauce. Hmmmm. See, all of them are wonderful tapas dishes – perfect Costa Del Sol food under the umbrellas with your drinks. 

他にも美味しかったのは、カラっとあがったアンチョビのフライ！これはもう、レモンを絞るだけでじゅうぶん。マッシュルームのソテーも、「アンダルーシア風は、蜂蜜ソースをかけるのよ」と説明してもらったナス🍆のフライもめっちゃくちゃ美味しかったですぅ。。。やはりタパスの名所、どのお味も＜おつまみとして存在する＞というか、太陽をいっぱいに浴びながら海岸沿いで食べるのにはモッテコイ！な一品ばかりでした。

We really enjoyed this place, “Los Maranagos.” Seems like there are 10+ locations in Malaga, and the owner’s families migrated originally from Lefkaga, Greece🇬🇷 in the 1930s. My husband was especially happy to hear this coincidence because he was in Leftaga also 🙂 Very authentic Malaga food, with reasonable prices and friendly service (Gracias, Fernando-san!). 

滞在中によく行ったお店がここ：Los Marangos. オーナーさんのご先祖はギリシャ🇬🇷のレフカダ出身だそうで、旦那さんが「僕行ったことある！」と、不思議な出会いに大喜び！マラガの味を忠実に守り、お手頃な値段でスタッフさんも優しいし。。。さすが街に11軒もあるだけ成功していますね。

One more thing about Malaga gastronomy which was a happy coincidence: そうそう、もうひとつ、旦那さんの「不思議な出会い」がマラガでありました。

This is Malaga’s famous local beer🍺, Victoria. No, the coincidence is NOT that my husband looks like this man in the logo. My Olof is much more handsome, and he is not German🇩🇪, and he doesn’t sweat💦 that much (note: apparently, this guy in the poster is a German tourist in the heat, therefore enjoying cold Vitoria Beer in Malaga in the 1960s). The beer was named its name officially on the feast day of Santa Maria de la Victoria – September 8th, 1928. Therefore, my husband and the beer share the same birthday!🎂 But not the same year! 🎉Hooray! 🥳

こちら、地元名産のビールのロゴ。いえ、ロゴのキャラがそっくりさん、とかそういうんじゃないです（ちなみにこの方は、マラガを観光に来て汗かいちゃってるドイツ人、という設定らしい）。こちらのビールと旦那さんの一緒だったんです！9月8日！🎊おめでとうございます㊗️と言うことで、胸張って１杯（いや、２杯？）🍻。

You are not a beer person? Well, for the tasting, we found an interesting “self-service” style wine bar🍷. I felt this system was very progressive and very European, and I guess the wine shop trusts the customers a lot, in a very mature way. How it works is… you choose the wine and how much you want to taste. Then, you pay with your credit card. Voilà! The machine will let you pour that much of what you paid for. Do you want to try it? ビーチ近くに見つけたワイン屋さん。ここでのテイスティングは、「完全セルフサービス」という、お客さんを信じきったヨーロピアン·システム。選んだワインとサイズのボタンを押して、クレカをかざすと、、、はい、注がれます。すごいなぁ。大人な国だわ。ご興味ある方は、VinumPlay というビーチ近くのお店へぜひ～🏖。

By the way, let me introduce a very important member of our family (in our fridge): this is Andalusia Sauce. You can buy this sauce anywhere here in Rabat – and it is a mixture of tomato paste , mayonnaise, garlic, paprika…? Anyway, we accompany this with pretty much any fried food, and it tastes so good. Why called Andalusia? I have no idea. 

ところで、我が家でいつも冷蔵庫にある家族の一員をご紹介。アンダルーシア·ソースちゃん。モロッコならどこのお店でも購入可能なソースなんですが、トマト味とマヨネーズとパプリカとガーリックを合わせたような、一度食べたら”これだけで全てうまくいく！”的なソースです。なぜアンダルーシアというネーミングなのかは知りませんが、最高です。

Picassoful Day in Malaga (Malaga Diary #1)

マラガ日記（パート１）：ピカソ三昧な日

We are still in the process of Carte de Séjour (Residence Permit Card), which means we need to get out of the Kingdom of Morocco every 90 days upon entry date. Until we receive the official card, this is something we need to do, and quite honestly, I think it is a very wise way for the Moroccan government to check on foreign residents through one of the most reliable identifications (passport) and through the homeland security system. It’s good to control us this way, and I respect that. In fact, every time I go through customs/immigration into Morocco, my love for Morocco seems to grow – I feel more and more “ I am so happy to be back and to be able to call this place home.”  WALAKIN (but) , it would be so nice that, one day, soon, we get Carte de Séjour! InshAllah.🙏

まだ在留許可証が正式に取れていないので、９０日ごとにモロッコ王国から海外へ出ないといけない私たち夫婦です。当初は「うぅ、なんとも面倒な」と思いましたが、考えてみれば、こうする事によって海外からの移住者の動向を３ヶ月ごとにパスポートを通してきちんとチェックできるし、ほほう、モロッコ政府、賢いですね。今までも何度かモロッコから出国／入国を繰り替えしていますが、モロッコへの入国審査を通る度に「ああ、この国に戻って来れて嬉しい、この国を”ホーム”と呼べて嬉しい」と思う気持ち&モロッコへの愛情が増えている気がします（でも、早く在留許可証欲しいなぁ）。

I call this outing “Petit Exodus” and, this time, we went to Malaga, Spain! この＜９０日おきの国外脱出＞をミニ·エキソドス（旧約聖書の中にある”出エジプト記”）、今回はスペイン·マラガへ～🇪🇸。

Pourquoi? Because we can take a direct flight from Rabat-Sale airport. With, one and only, RyanAir. I know, you all have mixed feelings about this Airline. Sometime ago, I made peace with “Ryan” (whoever that is) this way: “This is an airline that would like to teach me an important lesson: [There are times in life when I need to go beyond what I like or dislike, and accept what is available.]” Alhamdulillah.🙏

なぜって？それは、まず、ラバトからの足が良いのです。空港からダイレクトに多数の地へ飛んでいる賛否両論のRyanAir。『人生には、好き嫌いの感情を超えて物事をアクセプトする心が必要になる時がある』そういう大切な教訓を教えてくれるエアライン。というわけで、1時間の空の旅の先は、サラ～っとエスパーニャなのです！

Upon arrival… look at this beautiful city!到着してすぐ、まずは街の可愛さに目がハート😍

Sorry for the “half way eaten” picture… we were too busy enjoying the food. 写真映えしない食べ途中のスナップで失礼いたします。ガッツリと食べておりました。

Our first meal in Malaga, I have to say, was not very Andalusian. We enjoyed Chinese food with pork. 🐷We were not proud of ourselves, but we couldn’t hide our instincts. And there was a little Chinatown🥡 and there were delicious pork dishes (and beer🍻). It was their fault. 

そして、ひさしぶりの”豚肉たっぷり系”🥓中華料理を堪能。ぜんぜんアンダルーシア料理じゃないところが情けない、、、でも、本能は隠せない、、、（もちろん、旦那さんはビールも）！マラガの誘惑に負けました。

After the fulfilling lunch, we visited Picasso’s birth home, now a museum, Museo Casa Natal Picasso. Maestro Picasso was born on October 25, 1881, in Malaga with his official name of (are you ready?) – Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso – and lived there until he was 9 years old. He grew up in a wealthy family, and his father was a teacher at an art school, so he seems to have been familiar with art from an early age. 

この後は、マラガで一番行きたかった場所、「ピカソさんの生家」へ！マラガはピカソ巨匠の生まれ故郷、裕福な家で育った彼は、9歳までこの家で育ちまして、現在は博物館となっています。1881年10月25日、美術学校の先生をしているお父さんの元に生まれ、幼い頃からアートに慣れ親しんでいたようです。ちなみに、彼の本名は：パブロ・ディエゴ・ホセ・フランシスコ・デ・パウラ・ホアン・ネポムセーノ・シプリアーノ・デ・ラ・サンティシマ・トリニダード・ルイス・イ・ピカソ。

Maestro drew “doves” in his paintings often. Apparently, doves were his father’s favorite birds. Picasso built a dovecote at home, and even named his beloved daughter “Paloma.” Btw, she and her husband live in Marrakesh – how cool is that 🥰! Another motif you see frequently in his art is bullfighting. Little Picasso and his father would often go out to enjoy watching bullfighting; it was a fond father-son activity. I saw this cape by Sesena, a long-established brand in Madrid. Picasso looks dashing like a bullfighter in this picture, non? He left Spain in his later years for various reasons, but I can tell the Spanish blood flowed through his mind & body. And, his love for his father. Master Picasso is said to have been laid to rest in his coffin wearing this cape.

ピカソの絵に頻繁に使われる「鳩」は、実はお父さんが大好きだった鳥。世界平和のためのポスターに描かれた事は有名ですが、自宅に鳩舎を作ったり、愛娘に”パロマ”と名付けたり、と、鳩さんへの愛情は深そうです。そうそう、パロマさんとご主人、現在マラケシュにお住まいだそうです😘。うふふ、ご近所さん！そしてこれまたピカソと言えば、の闘牛。こちらも幼少期に親子で楽しんだアクテビティのひとつだったとか。博物館でみたこのマント。マドリードの老舗ブランド、Sesena社のデザイン。まるで闘牛士のようなピカソさん。晩年はさまざまな理由によりスペインを離れていたけれど、やはり心も体も、スペインの血が流れ、そして、いつまでもお父さんの事を思っていたんでしょうね。そんなマエストロ、棺の中でこのマントを着て永眠されているそうです。

In this small but rich-in-history building, you can enjoy rare art pieces of Picasso donated by his family, as well as masterpieces by his father (Jose Ruiz y Blasco) , Picasso’s baptismal gown, shoes, toys, books, etc.. At the park in front of the museum… Oh, hi! Are you sitting on the bench? It is said that if you stroke the head of Mr. Picasso, you will have good luck! 

お父さんのホセ·ルイズさんの作品や、ピカソちゃん（笑）の洗礼式で使われたお洋服を見て微笑ましい気持ちになった後、目の前の公園で、あら！こんにちわぁ～。このブロンズ·ピカソさんの頭をナデナデすると良い事が起きるそうです！

And it worked! It happened at the Museo Picasso Malaga where we visited next. はい、幸運が起きました！この後に訪問した「ピカソ·ミュージアム」で、最高の出会いが。。。

I was able to encounter the painting I wanted to see! I have loved this one for a loooooooong time. Probably my favorite Picasso piece of all. “Seated Jacqueline” makes me feel a lot of things. At the same time, it makes me think that, nothing really matters. Jacqueline Roque, Picasso’s last muse, while posing, quietly but strongly sends messages to his lover, and he answers with his inks and blushes. The colors are almost painfully bright and there are so many geometric patterns, yet, somehow, there is a warmth and calmness. I think it is because this painting is two lovers’ conversation, a secret little Love Letter💌, blessed by sunlight. 

ずっとずっと大好きだった（たぶん、ピカソ巨匠の作品の中で個人的に1番好き）なこの作品に出会えたんです。巨匠にとって最後のミューズとなったジャクリーンさんの体育座り。彼女の頭の中に浮かぶクエスチョンマークに、巨匠は絵の具とブラシで答えているような。痛々しいくらいの色あいと幾何学的な線がいっぱいなのに、なぜかあたたかく感じるのは、きっとこの絵は2人の間のラブレター💌だからなのかなぁ、と。

…while I was getting very emotional and impressed by this painting, my husband couldn’t stop laughing at one of Picasso’s masterpieces. Yes, he is a kind of guy who laughs to tears 😂 at Picasso’s work (and that’s why I love him 🤣) と、感動している横で、美術館で涙ながして笑いながら写真を撮る人が。。

I started laughing, too (and I also apologized to people around for our non-stopping laughs). “Insecto” bottle🪲. It’s from one of Picassos’ many phases: probably from “I think I am going to create ceramic with animal bodies and stuff, and let me put many arms” phase. And, why not?? I love it. 確かに笑える、この「Insecto：虫さん」ボトル。<～の時代> とさまざまなフェーズを生きたピカソさん、この『生き物系セラミックの時代』、カッコ良すぎます。子供みたいなアイデア💡で最高です！こんなに笑わせてくれるアーティストさんて、そんなにいない。やはり天才ですね、ピカソ巨匠。🙌
