From Mr.Egg Man to Couscous Friday – Highlights of Siv & Jill Days

卵おじさんからクスクス・フライデーまで；シブおばさんとジルさんデイズ

Our Moster Siv (“Moster” means “Aunty” in Swedish🇸🇪. When I first heard my husband’s family calling her that way, I thought it was “Monster Siv” 😈 – I felt that it was very disrespectful. At the same time, it made me very nervous to meet Siv in person) used to be a flight attendant for Pan Am. Apparently, sometime soon, she will be considered a Human Museum Piece as an ex-Pan Am cabin crew – whatever that means. Peace be upon her 👑. 

ジル叔母さんは元々フライトアテンダントさん。それも、パンナム航空にも従事していたという筋金いり。スウェーデン語で母方の叔母さんの事を”ムスター”と発音するのですが、はじめてそれを聞いた時、”モンスター”としか聞こえなくて、「げ、なんか怖そうな人なのかな？」と緊張したのを覚えております。

So, she had been in Rabat during her flight attendant days. She would then stay at the Hilton hotel – now called Sofitel. She would walk around shops in old Medina. For this visit, it was especially interesting for her to see how Rabat has changed after 50+ years! 

パンナム時代、ラバトは経由地だったという事で、50年ほど前はヒルトンホテルに泊まって（今はソフィテルになっている場所）、メディーナに行ったりしていたそうです。というわけで、シブ叔母さんにとって、今回のラバト滞在はその時の記憶を辿るような、ちょっと興味深い感じだったのかもしれませんね。

We had so so so much fun hosting Siv and Jill for a week in Rabat. Here are some highlights of what we did:　お二人は既にゴールデンなお歳ですのでゆっくりめな過ごし方でしたが、こんな感じのラバトデイズでしたぁ:

* 3-4 hours of breakfast time at our lanai every day! With lots of mint tea and coffee, and a variety of Moroccan bread and, of course, with Västerbottensost – aka King of Cheese 🤴🏼- which they brought from Sweden. Shukran Bzaaf. 毎朝、3-4時間我が家のラナイでのんびり朝食。モロッコのミントティやパン、そしてスウェーデンから持って来たもらった「チーズの王様🧀」とも呼ばれる＜ベスタボッテンオスト＞と一緒に！

* Visiting Chellah and looking at Storks for hours. Fika ☕️(Swedish coffee time) at the rather expensive Ciconia café, admiring the view of Roman ruins and Islamic architecture. シェラーへ行きコウノトリを眺めつつ、お高めなカフェ🫖でフィーカ・タイム。

* Wandering through Old Medina and shopping for Babouches, Tea cups, Djellaba… tried some street food!🐟 ラバトのメディーナでモロカン·スリッパやドレス、ティーカップなどお買い物。ストリートフードにもチャレンジ！

* Fun train ride to spend a day in Casablanca – Hassan II Mosque – and a luxury & touristy brunch at La Sqala. 列車でカサブランカへ。ハッサンIIモスクを訪れた後は、ラ·スカラでゴージャスなブランチ。

* Andalusian Garden and National Adornment Museum in the Oudayas. ウデイヤスにあるアンダルーシア·ガーデンと装飾品博物館を堪能。

Wedding gowns for a Jewish bride & a Muslim bride

* Pay respect to our king Mohammed VI of Morocco by visiting Royal Palace, and saw royal cats. モロッコのロイヤル・パレスを表敬訪問、ロイヤルな猫と出会う。

* Jill splashed into the Atlantic Ocean! We were also cheering for her daughter’s Equestrian 🐎 competition happening in Norway 🇳🇴 (and she was acing! Hooray!). ジルさんはビーチタイムも！そしてお嬢さんがノルウェイで行われている馬術競技大会に参加中という事で、みんなで応援！

* Having Rose Hip Soup and Lingonberry drinks🍹 (also brought from Sweden) in Morocco – with a twist.🌪 スウェーデンから持って来てくれたローズヒップ·スープやリンゴンベリー·ジュースを＜大人流にアレンジ＞して楽しむ３人😎。

* Introducing our favorite local restaurants such as, “Hatch” and “O’Goethe 2.0”. 地元のおすすめレストランにも足を運んでもらいました。

Couscous Friday! After Pea Soup & Pancake Thursday!

* Experiencing “Couscous Friday”! 金曜日といえば、クスクスの日！

* Saying hello to  “Mr. Egg Man🥚” even though, normally, we would only hear his voice from our Lanai (you can listen his beautiful voice in this short video). 卵売りのおじさん (いつもはラナイから声だけ聞くんです。よろしければ、動画を)と実際に会えました。

BUT, above all, the best thing was to be able to spend lots of time with Moster Siv-san and Jill-san. They really brighten up our days like lovely Moroccan sunshine🌞, and we were so blessed to have them here. Everywhere they went, local people would welcome them with warm hearts, and there were always lots of laughters.

と、並べてみましたが、なによりも最高だったのはお二人がわざわざここラバトまではるばる足を運んできてくれて、私たちの家に泊まってくれた事！お二人との楽しい会話ができる時間が本当に幸せで、モロッコのおひさま☀️のようにポカポカ、あたたかい日々でした。

Tack så mycket för att du kom till Marocko! Thank you for coming to Morocco – 来てくれてありがとうございました。And, please come back again soon (remember, Bank of Olof has the best exchange rate, and is always OPEN) !　また遊びにきてくださいね（”オオラフ銀行” いつでも最高のレートで営業中です💸🤑）。

She is NEVER a monster to me!

Välkommen till G. Clooney Barber Shop

ジョージ・クルーニー・サロンへようこそ！

We had a fabulous week of hosting even more fabulous guests from Sweden 🇸🇪 – our favorite Auntie Siv and her friend Jill. It was really our “dreams come true” time. See, we have been feeling that there are no words to explain how amazing Morocco is, and you really have to visit the country and experience it in person. So, we would love you to visit us! Experience all sorts of wonderful culture, food, nature, etc, which Morocco can offer, and meet the most hospitable & the most friendly people on earth. And we would be so happy to host your stay. 💗

スウェーデンから大好きなシブ叔母さんとジルさんをお迎えしていた１週間。とても楽しく、まさに、私たち夫婦の夢が叶った時間でした。前々から、モロッコの素晴らしさは、どうやって言葉にしてもなかなかうまく伝わらないのよねぇ～と思っていて、やはり実際にこの国に訪れて体験してみて欲しいなぁと。ですので、シブおばさん達が来てくれて本当に嬉しかったです。文化、食べ物、自然、優しい人々、たくさんの魅力があるモロッコ、皆さんもぜひ遊びにきてくださいねぇ。

Anyway, before Siv and Jill came – there was ONE THING, a very critical, a very necessary thing we had to do. In order to host our guests properly, we needed to do this. さてさて、シブおばさん達をお迎えする前に、ひとつ、とても重要な事をしなければなりませんでした！それは、、、

A hair cut. Pour mon mari. 旦那さんのヘアカット。💇🏼‍♂️And, I knew exactly where he had to do. むふふ、どこでするかは決めておりました。💈

G. Clooney Barber Shop. ここです。

I would often pass by this barber (which is very close to Snack Disney, by the way – another curious place to try just because of its name), and thinking, “What’s up with George Clooney?” Ha! Inside the salon, there were 6 George Clooney(s), along with a picture of Mr. King of Morocco. Peace be upon him. Somebody really likes him, obviously…

よくこのサロンの横を通ってて気になってたんですよね（近くに＜スナック·ディズニー＞という怪しいカフェもあります）。なぜジョージ·クルーニーなのかしらん？中に入ってみると、あらま、ジョージのお写真が6枚。もちろん、王様もいらっしゃいました。

Then, I asked the salon master “are you going to make my husband look like George Clooney?” he answered “inshallah (god’s willing) ” with a smile. That’s the very best way to use the word, I guess. 

「あのぉ、ウチの旦那さんをジョージ·クルーニーみたいにしてくれるの？」と聞いたら、笑顔の「インシャーラ（それは神のみぞしる）、、、」のお返事。さすがです。

By the way, there is an esthetics department for women in the back, which seems to offer various services (I was given a tour by this nice lady while waiting). I noticed various sizes of  <cups> attached to a vacuum-cleaner-look-like-machine. “These are breast and buttock augmentation cups, they are very popular among Moroccan women!” Well, what needs to be done has to be done somewhere, I suppose. And Mr. George Clooney has a wide range of skills. I was pretty impressed.

ちなみに、こちら奥には女性用のエステサロンがあり、さまざまなサービスを行なっているようです（ツアーをしてもらいました）。中でも「これはね、モロッコの女性に人気の豊胸用、それと豊尻用のカップよ！」とその機械を見せてもらいましたが、まぁぁぁ、やるべき事がやるべき場所で起きているんですね。ジョージ·クルーニーさん、お手が広い。勉強になりました。

30 minutes later, my husband’s haircut was finished. Mr. hairdresser asked me, “How do you like it?” I replied, “OMG, I thought he was George Clooney!” Humdulillah. 🙏

さて、30分後に旦那さんのヘアカットが終了。「どう？気に入った？」と聞かれたので「もうジョージ·クルーニーさんかと間違えちゃって、びっくり！」と答えておきました。ハンデゥリラ。

When asked why they chose this name for their barber; “Because George Clooney is cool and he has class.” O see! Now, I must admit that my husband looks cool enough to welcome our important guests from Sweden, thanks to G. Clooney Barber Shop 😎🆒!!

なぜこのお店の名前に？の質問には『ジョージ·クルーニーって、カッコいいし、ハイソだから』だそうです。了解！我が旦那さんもハイソな装いで、大切なお客様をスウェーデンからお迎え～との運びとなりました。めでたしめでたし。

Jidar Street Art Festival – A Big City-Sized Picture Book (Part #2)

ジダール・ストリート・アート・フェスティバル ー街をあげての絵本作り （パート２）

Another day of Jidar Street Art Tour! This time, we explore the area of Yacoub El Mansour. My husband and I have been doing self-guided tours almost every day in the last week, using their handy-dandy phone app📱, but joining the tour with an experienced guide and getting an expert knowledge is such a gift.  

ジダール·ストリート·アート·フェスティバル最終日の今日、ヤコウブ·エル·マンスール地区のウォールアートツアーに参加してきました。ジダールの携帯アプリを使って、ここ１週間ほぼ毎日のように、旦那さんとお散歩がてらテクテクと近所をまわり、壁画制作の様子を楽しんできていましたが、やはり、ガイドさんの詳しい説明付きだと面白味が増します。

So much to see, so much to learn! And, we also get to meet another incredible artist from Japan🇯🇵, Shimo-san! He gets inspiration from “rocks”🪨 – and this time, Shimo-san brought one rock from Japan, then picked some from Morocco and combined them together, representing “unity”. He was kind enough to show us his rock collection, and guess what? he had a unique <deal>; “if you bring a rock to him, he will give you a special sticker! “

今回もたっくさんの壁画をみて、たっくさんのストーリーを聞く事ができました。その中で、日本が誇るアーティスト、制作真っ只中のシモさんにも会えました！シモさんは、＜石＞をテーマに描いていらっしゃるのですが、今回は日本から持って来た石と、こちらのビーチなどで見つけた石を合わせた作品をとても美しく描いてくださっています。そしてそして、「石を持って来てくれたら、シールをプレゼントしますよぉ～」と言うことで。。。

Well, I got a sticker!!! So cool, yeah?ジャジャーン！いただきましたぁ。ピカピカ✨なシール！家宝にします🙏

If you are a great mural artist, I guess, you also have to be a great crane operator. Here is the video of Shimo-san’s A++ crane action! 素晴らしい壁画を描かれるアーティストさんは同時に、素晴らしいクレーン操縦士でなくちゃいけないんですね。そんなシモさんの華麗なる操縦ぶりをどうぞ。

5 mins from our home, there is a space designated for “Mur Collectif” where the next generation of artists from Morocco get together and paint one long wall. One of the artists, Annas Doujdid-san from Meknes was so friendly that he invited us to be part of his mural! “Come! Put something on the wall!” OMG are you serious…? I love his art – it’s so inviting and warm, and organic. Yet, sharp and insightful. Just like an artist himself. For some reason, I thought of Hermann Hesse’s novel, Steppenwolf. We also got to meet the “heart and soul” ❤️‍🔥of the whole event, fabulous Hind-san & Sanaa-san ! I SOOOOO appreciate everything they do to make this amazing event going for 10 years!🙌

我が家の近くでは、何名かの新鋭アーティストさん達が集まって壁画を作成している場所があり、そこにも足を運んでみると。。。お隣の都市メクネス出身のアナスさん、「良かったら、君たちも書いていいよ！」って。えええ、いいのぉ？そして、こんな感じでなんと参加させていただいちゃいました。アナスさんのアート、優しそうで鋭くて、それでいて人を呼び込む力があって。なぜか、ヘッセの小説「荒野のおおかみ」を思い起こさせる不思議な魅力がありました。イベントの運営部分を担当されたヒンドさんやアナアさん、などコア・スタッフさん達にも出会え、写真をパチリ。フェスティバル最終日にふさわしい、素敵な思い出となりました！

Through our walks and through each of the murals, we met so many wonderful people, and we made many new friends 🙂 My husband and I are still newcomers to Morocco, and we are learning new culture and new languages every day. Often, we feel lost or we feel lonely.

ウォーキングツアーや数々の壁画を通して、素敵な方達と出会い、お友達も増えました。私たち夫婦はまだモロッコに来て間もない新人、言葉や文化も知らないことばかりで、正直なところ、時には悩んだり寂しくなったり、もあります。

But, walking through the beautifully painted walls or “work-in-progress” murals gives me a positive feeling – kind of like, I am in a huge, city-sized incubator💓. “Something is cooking“or “Something good is going to happen!” feeling. The whole area of Rabat is creating a BIG picture book📕, and I get to be in the story – that’s how I feel. If that is the case, I would like to be a good character in a story… (not a villain🦹🏻‍♀️ – I should behave…😆). Shukran Bzaaf & Merci Beaucoup, the Jidar Street Art Festival! See you next year!!

でも、このような美しくユニークな壁画に囲まれていると、なんだか街中が大きな絵本になっているような気がするんです。そして、その中に私たちがいる、私たちもその絵本📘のストーリーの中にいさせてもらっている。物語の中の「悪者キャラ😈」にならないように、ちゃんと生活していこうと思います（笑）。ジダール·フェスティバルの皆さん、ほんとうにありがとう！来年も期待しております。

HATCH – my new favorite cafe in town!

HATCH – 今いちばん好きなカフェ

Being a Seattleite (person who has/had lived in Seattle) for 20 years, I can be picky when it comes to choosing my favorite café☕️. Now, in Morocco, there are TONS of cafés, and everyone is sipping their Atay bnaanaa (mint tea) or Kahwa nousnous (half coffee & half milk), facing one direction – towards the street. Smoking or discussing politics or last night’s football game. Or gossiping…? Whatever it is, they all know how they spend their café time. I love it. 

シアトルに20年ほど住んだ私は、カフェ選び☕️となると少々ピッキーになる傾向があるかもしれません。モロッコにはたっくさんのカフェがありまして、みなさん同じ方向をを向いて座りつつ、ミントティーやヌスヌス·コーヒー（ミルクとコーヒー半々）を飲みながら、サッカーの話なのか、ゴシップなのか、なんだかいろいろお話されております。

As much as I love that Moroccan-style café time, I also need to spend some café time in a way I used to – “Third Place Concept” style – bringing a laptop to do my work, checking emails and catching up on what’s going on in other parts of the world. Or reading Kindle books or writing my new blog (aha!). All the things I COULD do at home, BUT, I often need a different atmosphere where I can feel a change of pace, a change of smell, or a change of inspiration. With a cup of coffee or snacks. 

そういったモロッコ·スタイルなカフェの過ごし方も好きなんですけど、時には、”サードプレイス”的なカフェの過ごし方もしたい時があるんですよね。要は、ラップトップを持っていて、仕事をしたり、メールをチェックしたり、このようなブログを書いたり（笑）。もちろん、家でもできるんですけどね、なんとなく、違う環境で、違う匂いや違うインスピレーションを感じながら、、、という気分転換になるカフェが必要になったりしませんか？

I think I found the perfect place! in my neighborhood! そして、出会ったのがこのカフェだったのでした！

“Hatch” 🐣is a new café in Agdal, just a few blocks from our apartment. They opened very recently, and it is my understanding they named their café “hatch” because it is like an egg hatching – the beginning of new life!

Hatch🐣という名のこのカフェは我が家のすぐ近くに最近オープンしたばかり。赤ちゃんが卵の殻をわって出てくる意味がついています。私はそこのサラダが大好きぃ～。

As I said, I COULD be very picky about choosing my favorite café – so why I like Hatch? Hitesh (because) foremost, their drinks and foods are absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. I can tell that they take pride in making all these dishes and also having fun making them (I can hear the laughter from the kitchen). 

さて、カフェ·ピッキーな私がなぜこのHatchが好きになったか？まず、ドリンクとお食事メニュー、本当に美味しいし、お値段もお手頃。そして調理している方達の笑い声が聞こえてくるんです。これってすごく良いサインだなぁって思います。

The staff, Nada-san, Yasu-san, Jeff-san, are all so friendly and welcoming – look at them! They are really sweet. It just makes me want to come back again and again. Also, technical stuff, such as… their Wi-Fi is strong, outlets are everywhere, chairs are comfy, the music they pick to air is perfect (uplifting but not noisy), toilet is clean – I don’t underestimate the power of a clean bathroom! 

スタッフのこの笑顔！みなさんすごくフレンドリーで優しくて、名前も覚えてくれて、そうするとやはり「またくるねぇ～」ってなりますよね。そして、テクニカルな事ですが、Wi-Fiは強いし、コンセントはいっぱいあるし、椅子の座り心地はいいし、BGMの選曲はいいし（うるさすぎないし）、おトイレも清潔でナイス！

When I hear the word “Hatch”, I think of Salvador Dalí. Spanish surrealist artist, slightly crazy, but very talented in many ways. Eggs appear a lot in  his paintings. In fact, he used eggs to symbolize life, love, and hope. His museum in Figuares, Spain – you see a lot of eggs on top of the buildings, too. In order for an egg to hatch, it needs tender & loving care. Mama bird needs to give a good amount of attention & warmth. 

“Hatch”と聞いて、最初に頭に浮かんだのが、実はサルバドール·ダリのアートでした。シューレアリズムで有名な彼の作品のいくつか、卵がモチーフとして使われています。スペインのフィギュアレスにある彼の美術館／シアターの建物も巨大な卵でいっぱい。ダリ氏は、卵を人生や愛、そして希望の象徴として描いたと言われているんですよね。卵の中から生命が生まれてくるためには、たくさんのケアが必要で、その様子に気を配り温かく見守ってあげないといけない。

I just like to be at the Hatch because I can feel that the staff there would love to give their attention and heart-warming hospitality to their customers. Then, in return, when I “hatch” into the world, stepping outside the café, I can try to be kind to others, by giving attention and warmth to those in need. Maybe, that’s why I can call Hatch my favorite café 🙂 Anyone can “Hatch” if you are given a chance, don’t you think?

私がこのカフェが気に入った理由は、ひょっとするとそんな気配りやあったかさが感じられるからなのかも？そしてカチャカチャ仕事を終えて、自分も程よくリチャージされて、「さてと！自分も殻から出てがんばろう！」って気になるような、カフェのスタッフさんからもらった愛情のおかげで、ポジティブになれる、人に優しくなれそうな気にさせてくれる。チャンスがあれば誰でもHatch!できるのかも。

Many Takoyaki in Agdal? & “My name is Tomobil”

たこ焼きがいっぱいあるアグダルと、トモビールなトモ

I was born in Tokyo, but I love Takoyaki (Kansai area is known for this flavorful Japanese street food). I miss eating GOOD Takoyaki… Can’t have Takoyaki without Katsuo-bushi, in my opinion 🤓 The Bonito flake🐟. I have seen Katsuo-bushi in Morocco – Walakin (but), this size is Kbir Bizaaf! Trop Grand! Too big! as it is for professional usage? I think I will have to find small packaged ones somewhere…

私は東京生まれですが、たこ焼きは大好きです！こちらに来てから、残念ながら食べてはいませんが、、、鰹節には出会っております。ただ、この業務用サイズはちょっと買いにくいかなぁぁ（今度、小さいサイズのを持ってこよう）。

Now, these little half-spheres on the street in my neighborhood are placed to let the drivers and pedestrians know that this is the way for the parking garage. But, to me, they look like Takoyaki. I like stepping on them, just for fun. Sure, I am a weird, I have a mentality of 4 years old, and I am a Gaijin msattia (crazy) on a street of Agdal. Je suis désolé (I am sorry) .

さて、私の住むアグダルの道端でみかけるこのポコんっとしたもの。こちらは、建物にある地下駐車場に向かう道を分けているもののようなのですが、なんだか、＜たこ焼き＞に見えて来てしまう私。そして、ヒョイっと登っちゃう私は、たぶん、街行く人の目にしたら、子供っぽい”変なガイジン”にしか見えない👀と思います。ごめんなさい。

These Takoyaki come in different colors, by the way. Some are red, some are Pokemon-ish, some are shiny. I have been a “Street Takoyaki Hunter” ever since I moved to Agdal. Instead of playing “Pokemon Go!” I am playing “Takoyaki Go!”  Cheap entertainment. 

このたこ焼きちゃん達、きにしてみるといろんなデザインがあって。赤系だったり、ポケモン的だったり。光り物系だったり、と、あります。新しいたこ焼きにであう度に写真を撮っている自分もおかしいんですけどね。”ポケモンGO”をやってるのと同じです。

So, the street parking situation here. There seems to always be designated “siddi (brother)” on the spot. He is not really hired by any association, probably, but he is really The King of the Street and knows which spot is open, will help the drivers to park, etc. And they will get small tips. It is a well-established system, I have to say. 

駐車場といえば、こちらは路上駐車する場所には必ずと言っていいほど、アテンドしているSiddiさん（お兄さん）がいます。おじさんの時も多々ですが、、、この方達、自称アテンドさんのようでして、特に誰かに雇われているわけでもないようですが、彼らのおかげでタイトなスペースにきっちりと車が駐車でき、また「こっちに空いてる場所あるよ！」と教えてもらったり、 難しい縦列駐車のサポートをしてもらったり。彼らにはチップを払ってハンドゥリラ～。よくできたシステムです。

By the way, in Darija, a car is Tomobil🚙. So, when I am asked what my name is, I often introduce myself as “My name is Tomo, just like Tomobil!🚘” – not a funny joke, but it is a good way for my new Moroccan friends to remember my name, I think.  Even though I don’t own a car anymore (and I am so happy about it!).

ダリジャ語で「車」は、トモビール🚙. 私はこちらにきてから自分の名前を聞かれた時に、「シュミティ·トモ（私の名前はトモ）、 トモビールみたいな！」 と言っております。つまらないジョークですが、ローカルの方達に名前を覚えてもらうにはいいみたい。車を所有してないのに、私は車🏎なのです、はい。

This is a school bus🚌 (kind of tomobil, no?) thingy at Arribat Center Mall – It’s cute, and kids love to go inside. Look, look! Tokyo is that way🗼! Awwww… そしてこちらは、近くのアリバットセンター·モールにあるオモチャのスクールバス。子供達👧🏻🧒🏻が中に入って遊んだりして微笑ましいのですが、なんと！東京にもお迎えに行くのかな？うふふ。

Fabulous Tajine & Yule Tomte

タジン鍋とトンプテの関係

Tajine. A fabulous tajine. When you think of Morocco🇲🇦, you probably think of that authentic looking pot with a pointed lid. To me, it kind of looks like a Christmas Tomte (Swedish gnome-ish character). Luckily, our landlord left us a large tajine pot – “Tab3n! (of course!)👏 I should totally use it!” so I have been trying to learn to include tajine dishes as much as I can.

タジン。奥がふかーい、タジン。モロッコといえば、きっとみなさんの頭に浮かんでくる、あのとんがり帽子のお鍋です。スウェーデンのクリスマス人形、トンプテにも似ています。もちろん、こちらではタジン鍋メニューをいろいろ目にしますし、我が家の大家さん🏠がタジン鍋（大）をキッチンに置いていってくださったので、「これは使うしかないでしょう！」という事で、私もできるだけタジン料理、挑戦中です。

Now, after three months of living here, our tajine family has grown, like the Bears from the Goldilocks story🐻. I have to say, it’s really convenient to own different sizes of tajine for different purposes. For example, when it’s just the elderly couple wanting to have eggs🍳 for breakfast, I can use a small one. Then, for a quick meatball tagine for two? The medium size is perfect. But when I want to simmer some beef shanks 🐄 with prunes (we are big fans of leftovers!) or when we are having guests over, I need the large size tajine.

さて、こちらの滞在3ヶ月となり、タジンちゃんファミリーは＜大＞から、＜中＞＜小＞と増え、「３匹のくま」状態となりました。やはり、用途によって使い分けられると便利なんですよね。例えば、朝ご飯に老夫婦2人だけで「ちょっと朝の卵を、、、」なんて時には＜小＞で。そして、お夕食時に「ミートボールのタジーンでさらっと行きましょう！」という時には、＜中＞がぴったりだし、「いやいや、今日は張り切って、牛すね肉🥩をプルーンと一緒に煮込んじゃうわよ！（明日、ひょっとしたら明後日も、残り物祭りよ！）」という時や、「お客さんが来るし、イカさん🦑の詰め物タジーンなんてやっちゃう？」なんて時は、＜大＞が必要なんです。

So, this world of tagine. The more I use it, the more interesting it gets. It kind of feels like it is a cooking gadget with personality, and the user (me) and the equipment (the tagine) need to communicate throughout the process. The inside of the pointy space is an unknown world, and often, I just need to be patient – let Mr. or Ms. tajine be in charge. I want to open it, but if I open it, the process of slow-cooking with steam inside that has been perfectly sealed up for a good & delicious reason, will be wasted! Ugh, it’s difficult. I have no choice but to trust the tagine.

というわけで、このタジンさん。使えば使うほど、その調理器具としての性格というか、状態を察知していくおもしろさがあります。使う側（私）と使われる側（タジン）が一心同体になってる感覚というのでしょうか。とんがり帽子の中は、未知の世界なので、開けたい、でも、開けてしまったら、せっかく密封さされた中のスチームでゆっくりと調理されている行程が無駄になる！ううう、苦しい。もう、タジンさんを信じるしかない。

But, when the steam needs to be out a bit – this is how you do. Wooden spatula! I learned this when I took the cooking class through Moroccan Food Tour. It was such a fun time, I remember, as we got to experience from getting ingredients at the market, then cook at a beautiful Moroccan house. I strongly recommend their tours & experiences👍🏼👍🏼

それでも、ちょっとだけ蓋を開けて調理した方がいい場合もある。その時は、この写真のように木ベラを利用！これ、モロカン・フード・ツアーが開催しているクッキングクラスをとった時に学びました！材料調達から体験できる、とてもとても楽しいクラスでした。すっごくおすすめです🙌🙌

It’s like a combination of a pressure cooker and a slow cooker, but when you put a lot of vegetables in a pot (it fits a lot in the triangle space!) it warms up the whole house and your heart as well, and veggies always turn out so so yummy. In the land that is/was originally a desert region, this pot that is easy to cook in with a small amount of water must have been a good idea💧.

まるで、圧力釜とスロークッカーを足して２で割ったような感じなのですが、お野菜をたっぷり入れたお鍋（とんがり空間にはいっぱい入ります！）を細い火でゆっくりと炊いていると、家中や心もあったかくなります。そして、お野菜の美味しい事ったらもう、、、🤤。もともと砂漠地帯のこの土地では、この＜少量の水でも調理がしやすいお鍋＞は、グッドアイデアだったのでしょうね。

The “tajine restaurant” that you can find at the stalls in the souk sells “tajine of the day” like in this picture – the man opens the lid of each one to show the customers what to choose from. Then, serve it with bread such as khbuz. Bon appétit! Oh, by the way, Ras el Hanut is a spice that is indispensable when I make tajine. I feel like it is a Moroccan version of Garam Masala🇮🇳. Apparently, there are 20 to 30 different spices mixed in Ras el Hanut, such as pepper, cumin, turmeric, ginger, coriander powder, etc. It’s quite amazing how just shaking this gives it a rich, “Moroccan” taste.

スークの屋台などで見かける「タジン屋さん」ではこのように＜今日のタジン＞が売っておりまして、オジちゃんがひとつひとつ蓋をあけてみせてくれるので、気に入ったものを選べます。そしてお皿にもってもらい、クブズ などのパンをそえて、はい、どうぞ。そうそう、私がタジンを作る時に欠かせないスパイスがこちら、ラス・エル・ハヌートと呼ばれるものなんですが、モロッコ版のガラムマサラ🪷？でしょうか。コショウ、クミン、ターメリック、生姜、コリアンダーパウダー、などなど、聞いたところによると、20、30ものスパイスが混合されたミックスだそうで。これをフリフリするだけで、なんともいえない「モロッコな味」がしてくるのが不思議です。

My husband’s favorite tagine is the “Meatball Tagine.” It feels like an “exotic version of Swedish meatballs” (completely different from the IKEA one) with a lot of cumin flavor. Oh, I see, he’s of Swedish descent, so maybe that’s why he likes it? Or, because of Tomte? I guess you can’t really beat where he comes from… By the way, my beloved Moster (auntie) Siv is coming here from Sweden 🇸🇪 soon! I’m really, really looking forward to it!!!✈️

私の旦那さんが好きなタジンは「ミートボールのタジン」。感覚的には”スウィーディッシュ·ミートボールのエキゾチックバージョン”、（IKEAとは全く違いますが）クミンの味が多めです。あ、そうか、彼はスウェーデン系だった、だからこれが好きなのかな？あるいはトンプテの影響かしら？やはり血は争えない。そうそう、もうすぐ、スウェーデンから大好きなシィブおばさんがやってきてくれます！すっごくすっごく楽しみです～。

Jidar Street Art Festival – Because Art Doesn’t Discriminate (Part#1)

ジダール・ストリート・アート・フェスティバル２０２５：アートは差別しない！（パート1）

The much-waited Jidar Rabat Street Art Festival has begun! Some artists have already started to paint their murals, which I get to see the work in progress. It is sooo exciting 🙂 I have written about various murals and about this festival in my previous blog, but when this year’s festival is actually here – it is a different level of fun! 

楽しみにしていた、Jidar Rabat Street Art Festivalがはじまり、はじまり～！すでに壁画の制作がはじまっている場所もあり、テクテクと歩いてそのプロセスを見させてもらったり、アーティストご自身にであえたり、と、もうワクワクしちゃいます。以前のブログでもラバトのストリートアートについて書きましたが、実際に今年のイベントデーとなり、テンションがあがります。

My husband and I participated in a guided tour organized as a part of the festival program yesterday. It was a 90-minute walking tour explaining some of the murals created in the previous 9 years through their event. The guides were very informative, very friendly, and guess what? It was free! I was also able to meet local art lovers. I felt a bit bad, though, because I might have been the only one who needed some additional explanation in English – maybe it is my goal for the Jidar’s 11th edition – I will study hard in French so that I can understand better! Merci Beaucoup for being patient with me & for adding some English translation. 

そんな中、フェスティバルのプログラムとして開催された、ガイドツアーに参加してきました。今年10年目を迎えるこのイベントですので、ラバトにはたくさんの壁画が存在していますが、そのいくつかをウォーキングツアーで説明してくれる、しかも無料！という素敵な企画。地元のアート好きな方とも知り合え、とても楽しい時間でした。たぶん、英語での補足が必要だったのは私だけだったかなぁ☹️ごめんなさい。それでも嫌な顔もせず、英語で説明を足してくれました。感謝感謝です。

Among all the murals we saw (20 or so?), these two of them left the biggest impressions on me. その中でもいちばん心に残ったのは、この２点。

First one: Painted by the Mexican artist, Pixel Pancho, in 2015 – the very first year the Jidar (meaning, “wall”) festival launched. A robot with no emotion is a shepherd, surrounded by sheep and flowers. It looks quiet and peaceful, but, somehow, it is sending us a strong message, I felt. It might be sending question marks and those questions are emerging. Co-existing technology and tradition, the times are constantly evolving, but we should never forget to respect nature. Apparently, the artist asked the Jidar management team not to do any special maintenance on this particular piece after its completion, and let nature take its way. Maybe he meant that “this art is part of the environment, if you want to preserve it properly, it should blend in with the surrounding environment and nature”?

まずはJidar (とは、’壁’の意味）の初年2015年にメキシコ人アーティストのPixel Pancho氏によって描かれたもの。無表情のロボットが羊飼いになっていますよね。静かだけど、なかなかインパクトがあり、どんどんクエスチョンマークが生まれてくる。テクノロジーと伝統のCo-exsiting、時代はどんどん進化するけれど、自然を敬う気持ちは決して忘れてはいけないよ、そんなメッセージを強く感じました。こちらのアーティストさん、あえてこのウォールのメインテナンスには、特別な塗料を与えないようにお願いされたいったそうです。「このアートは環境の一部、ちゃんと保存したいなら、まわりの環境と自然と融合させて」って事なのかな？

Second one: This is a work by a duo from the Netherlands, Telmo & Miel. It’s surreal, but the strong-willed woman looks both old-fashioned and modern. She also looks like she is protesting about something, or she is resting and at peace after all the protesting is done. I was attracted to her powerful gaze, like a Joan of Arc of Morocco. Do you see multiple hands or shoulders? Or could there be multiple heads hiding? As someone who was an art model, I can say, it is a nightmare pose! 

もうひとつはこれ。オランダからやってきた二人組, テルモ＆ミエルによる作品なのですが、意志の強そうな女性が、古風にも現代風にも見えてきますし、また、何かに向けて抗議しているような、あるいは、抗議を終えて平和な気持ちになっているようにも見えてきませんか？まるで、モロッコのジャンヌ·ダルクのような眼差しに惹かれました。そして、あらら、手が、肩が、ひょっとしたら頭も多数、、、絵のモデルをしていた私としては、いやぁこれは難しいポーズです。

Now, this year’s festival brings two wonderful artists from Japan! Mr. Hideyuki Katsumata from Osaka and  Mr. Shimo Kyosuke. My husband and I were lucky enough to meet Katsumata-san while he was working on his cubical mural at Park Hassan II. 

さてさて、今年のフェスティバルには、日本からお２人の素敵なアーティストさんがやってきております！そのお1人、大阪からHideyuki Katsumataさんが近くのHassan II公園でキューブ·ミューラルを製作中！と聞き、ちょっとよってきましてお会いすることができましたぁ！

お忙しい中、気軽にお話ししていただいて、写真もとっていただいて、すごく嬉しかったです。また見に行きまーす！”次のクスクス（金曜日）までに”完成、頑張ってくださいね。

Near Katsumata-san’s cube, I saw this art by Blue Crab (also WIP). I guess it’s a motif of boxing… Well, my modeling DNA made me do this, of course. カツマタさんの近くにあったこちらも制作途中のモロッコ人アーティスト, ブルークラブさんのものです。ボクシングのテーマなのでしょうね、ついこのポーズで1枚。

This festival will continue 10 days, but honestly, I think that the greatest thing about the festival is that, even after the week is over, the spirit of the festival continues to grow, thanks to all the wall art. The colors, memories, and stories continue to spread. Art does not discriminate – Art creates harmony, so anyone can enjoy it when they see the wall. Jidar Street Art Festival is a chance to remind us that we should cherish art and nature, be grateful to have public spaces where we can live in peace, and maintain a world without war, where “walls” do not have to fall. It may seem obvious, but it is not, – because, without wall, there is no Wall Art.

このフェスティバル自体は10日間ではありますが、実はその醍醐味はイベント終了後も楽しめるところだと思います。壁画はそのまま残り、その絵の色や思い出をいつでもだれでも楽しめちゃう。アートは人を差別する事をしませんし、ハーモニーを産むものだと思います。そして、自然を敬い、公共の場所を持てる事に感謝したり、戦争のない世界、つまり、銃撃などで壁が崩壊される心配のない世の中である事、そういう社会を当たり前に思っちゃいけないんだなぁ、と気付かせてくれる良いチャンスをくれるのも、このJidar Street Art Festivalの良いところです。だって、壁がなかったら、＜壁アート＞

Knocking at the gate of Al Minbar Institute

門を叩きましょう！アル・ミンバー・インスティチュートで過ごした10週間

You find many big & beautiful Bab (gates) in Morocco. I believe they are remainings from Kasbah (citadel) or fort. When I go through these gates, I often think of the quote from my favorite Indian poet, Mr. Rabindranath Tagor:

“He who wants to do good, knocks at the gate; he who loves finds the gates open.” 

モロッコではたくさんの’門’を見かけます。古城の入り口や古い城壁が残っているからなのですが、毎日のように、この古く美しい門の数々をくぐりながら歩く時、ふと、大好きなインドの思想家／詩人ラビンドラナス・タゴール氏の言葉を思い出します。

「善い事をしていこう！と決めたら、門を叩いて道を開いて行きましょう。そして、そこに愛情があるなら、全ての門はすでに開いています。」

Right after we moved to Rabat, we started Darija class, twice a week, at Al Minbar Institute. The campus is located about 3.5km away from home, and we decided to walk to our class every time. It was a great exercise for us, as well as being a wonderful way to explore our nouvelle ville (new city)🏙. 

さて、こちらに越してきてからすぐ、今まで触れたことのない、ゼロからの出発となるダリジャ語を学ぶために、Al Minber Instituteという語学学校に週に２回、通いました。家から約3.5キロの場所にあるキャンパス、ウォーキングの距離的には最高！という事で、通学は徒歩🚶🏻‍♀️。おかげで程よいエクササイズにもなり、新境地の地理を知る良いチャンスにもなりました🌇。

We were practically spoiled! There were just my husband and me in the classroom, and we had the BEST teacher, Hajar-sensei!  There was no “Darija Learning Textbook 101”, instead, she practically catered for all our lessons depending on what we wanted to learn. She was so clever and kind enough to make all the handouts and iPad materials, based on what my husband and I would be interested in (I honestly think it is not easy to accommodate two VERY different people like us – one incredibly smart Material Scientist who received PhD. from MIT, and the other who is into art and thinks the moon is made of cheese 🧀 & wears Vache qui rit earrings). So all the classes got naturally sparked and full of laughters💖. She taught us not only vocabulary +grammar+sentences, but also about deep Moroccan culture and about the way Moroccans think and act in everyday lives. In a way, she has become our “guide”, “pathfinder”, “cheerleader”, “coach”, guardian angel”👼 (… I can find many more words) for our first two months in Morocco🇲🇦. 

なんと、クラスは私たち夫婦と先生1人という、贅沢な設定。そしてこちら、ハジャール先生が最高に素晴らしい方なんです～。特に「ダリジャ語習得テキストブック」のようなものがない代わりに、毎回ご自身で準備してきてくれるプリントと、アイパッドの資料を駆使して、バラエティにとんだ内容を教えてくれるんですよ。しかも、その内容は、私たち夫婦の興味や、前回のクラスで[ノってきた😆]内容を膨らますような、そういったもの。ですので、私たちも自然と興味がわき、そして、すぐに使いたい言葉や表現を教えてくれるんです。

To my surprise, Hajar-sensei told us in the beginning, “I am studying Japanese!” Wow! So, she would explain to me, such as “you know, this Darija expression is like “Gochiso-sama (‘thank you for the food’ in Japanese)🇯🇵.” One time, I gave her a shwiya (small) amount of Natto (⬅️Blog is here) as she was interested – I hope it didn’t shock her🤣🙏. I never knew I could call my Darija teacher as “先生: Sensei”. It was a total masdooma (shock) moment!

そしてハジャール先生、「私、日本語勉強中なのよぉ～」と！嬉しいじゃぁありませんか。時々、「ああ、これは、日本語でいう、＜ご馳走さまでした＞と同じ表現ね❣️」と、なんともしっくりくる説明をくださるんですよ。日本の食べ物にも興味があるらしく「あの、ネバネバした、納豆 (⬅️ブログはこちら）？あれって美味しいの？」と聞くので、あげました。ごめんなさい🙇🏻‍♀️。なので、私は最初からずっと、＜ハジャール先生＞と”先生”付きで呼ばせてもらいました。

Some weeks fell into Ramadan, and she taught this 90~120mins classes without drinking a drip of water (and she had to talk all the time!). Hamdulla (Praise be to God)! She would share some gâteau (sweets) that her mom made, or Sellu  with us. Her sense of humor was top-notch! These 10 weeks with Hajar-Sensei sure were a great gateway for us, and her Bab is definitely always open. 

ラマダン中は、もちろんお水も飲まずにずっと喋り続けて９０分～１２０分の授業をしてくれた先生。「私のお母さんが作ったのよ👩🏻‍🍳」とお菓子や、ラマダン中のパワーフード、セルーを分けてくれたり、本当に心優しく、そして、ユーモアのセンスもたっぷりな素敵な先生でした。言語だけでなく、モロッコの毎日で役立ついろいろな＜How to＞を教えてくれたクラス、この１０週間は、私たち夫婦にとってかけがえのない門出、まさに、門を通っていた感じでした。

And, this beautiful lady, Khaoula-san from the admission office, was very sweet to us for the whole time. AND, she knew about “Flan Japan“ (⬅️Blog is here) (NOTE: I decided to devote myself as an unofficial spokesperson 🤣 for this product)!!! She said, “I knew this flan, I used to enjoy it when I was small! It’s so nostalgic! I love antique stuff!” Oh, how I love thee!!😍

そして、学校のマネージメントを担当してくれた、カウオウラさん。初めてキャンパスを訪れた時から、いつも「がんばってる？何か必要な事ある？」と声をかけてくれ、とても優しい方でした。そしてなんと！私のモロッコのアイデンティティ（と、勝手に決めている）Flan Japan (⬅️ブログはこちら）の事も知っていたのです！！！「あぁ～、これ、私、子供の頃食べてた！すっごい懐かしい～。レトロのものってチョーいいよねぇ！」って。もう意気投合してしまい、この喜びの写真です。

I am so glad that we chose Al Minber Institute for our school. It was the first best investment in Morocco, I feel, and I strongly recommend anyone to try knocking✊🚪 on their “gate” if you want to learn Arabic language or Moroccan culture. I am sure you will immediately know that their “gate” is open – dima (always) – and you will hear a very friendly “🤗Merhaba!🤗” 

本当に、このアル·ミンバーを選んでよかったぁ、と思った最終日でした。若い頃はその国に少し滞在すればある程度の会話がわかるくらいの外国語適応頭脳があったような私ですが、今はぜーんぜんだめになってしまって、トホホな日々。でも、ハジャール先生やカウオウラさんのおかげで、最高の１０週間を過ごせました。この学校はまさに、モロッコの文化と言語を学ぶ、偉大なる「門」だと思います。みなさん、どうぞ、トントン！✊🚪と、アル·ミンバーのドアを叩いて入ってみてくださいね。きっと、「🤗メルハバ！🤗」と両手を広げて待っていてくれますよ。

Tomo qui rit, when she can speak French

フランス語との戦いーいつかは勝者の笑みを

In Morocco, people speak several languages. While Standard Arabic, Moroccan Arabic and Berber are considered as their national languages, many people speak French in their everyday life – at school, at work, at restaurants, at stores… pretty much everywhere I go, I hear French. Our paperwork for Carte de sejour (residence permit) is in French. My favorite cheese is called La vachi qui rit (laughing cow) in French. So, I have been studying French, as well as Darija (Moroccan Arabic). 

モロッコの人は何ヵ国もしゃべれる方が多く、アラビア語（スタンダード＆ダリジャ）とベルべル語が公式用語と定められていますが、それ以外にも、フランス語がどこでもよくつかわれています。住民登録書の書類もフランス語、私の大好きなチーズブランドもフランス語、お店でもレストランのメニューもフランス語、よって、ダリジャを学ぶのと同時進行で、おフランス語も勉強中。

Now, to be honest with you, my menopausal brain is not very capable of accommodating two new languages. My birth language is Japanese, then I learned to use English pretty much my whole life. I also learned Hawaiian and Hindi. Touched a bit of Spanish, too. Now, French is the next level language for me. 

しかし、このプチ更年期の脳みそに、新しい２ヵ国語がなかなか入ってこないんですよねぇ。日本語と英語で生活してきて、ハワイアンとヒンディーを学び、スペイン語もポキート触れましたが、今、このフランス語がいかに難しい言語なのか、を、ヒシヒシと感じているんです。

First, it sounds like I need to drink a glass of wine 🍷 to pronounce those French words, but, unfortunately, I am allergic to alcohol. There are so many “silent” letters, or shortly cut words, which I really think I would be better if I were too drunk to notice. Also, my asian nose👃might not have the right shape for creating those nasalized vowel sounds. Je ne sais pas (I don’t know)…🤷🏻‍♀️

まず、フランス語をしゃべる時って、ワイン🍾があった方がいいような気がするんです。でも、私はアルコールがだめなんです🙅🏻‍♀️。フランス語ってなんだか発音しない文字だとか、隠れた音とか多くて、文字がぼやけて見えない方がいい、酔っ払ってた方がいいような。あと、あのなんともいえない鼻母音というか、独特の喋り方。私のアジアの鼻はああいう音はうまく出せない気がします。

Secondly, the difference between masculine and feminine nouns. This is also for Darija, but it is so hard for me to get it right. Maybe I think too much. Masculine words pair with the articles “le” or “un”, while feminine words use “la” or “une” – so, one baguette will be, Une Baguette (f), and one croissant will be, Un Croissant (m). Visually👀 & intuitevely🤨, I disagree with this gender definitions for these breads. Le Gyoza (m)🥟:I also have to disagree. How comes, Le Lait (milk)(m), when it comes from cows?  Le fromage (cheese)(m) continues to be masculine,  Le gâteau au fromage (cheesecake in French)(m) Okay, still manly. BUT, if it’s in a tart shape, it becomes La tarte au cheesecake (f). I rest my case here.

これはスペイン語の時もそうでしたが、<女性名詞と男性名詞の違い>。ダリジャでもそうですけど、この違いはもう？？？状態です。ビジュアル的にも直感的にも、フランスパンが女性で、クロワッサンが男性、って納得できないし、餃子が男性なのも「へ？」です、私的には。女性の牛さんからしか産出できないミルクが、なぜ、男性名詞なのか? チーズ（fromage) も男性のまま、チーズケーキも男性で、しかーし！タルトのようなチーズケーキとなると、女性名詞の La tarte au cheesecake になるらしく。もう、ここで終了。

Third, this is probably the biggest question mark for me. The counting system in French (vigesimal). I am okay until 60. Now, from 70 and up – pourquoi (why)? お次は、このエキセントリックなおフランスの数字システム (二十進法)。60まではよしとして、70以降が。。。

Apparently, French-speaking people in Canada, Belgium and Switzerland don’t use this system (instead, they use “septante” for 70, “huitante” or “octante” for 80 and “nonante” for 90). ちなみに、このシステム、カナダやベルギー、スイスなどでフランス語を話す方達は違うようです。

D’accord, I whined enough. Oh, I “wined” enough? 🍷🤣 Maybe I can speak French better from now on! C’est une mauvaise blague – it’s a bad joke!  (my opinion: “blague”(f) is “joke” in French – but, jokes are my husband’s specialty, so it should be masculine – especially if it’s mauvaise). Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy learning French. I find it very charming, when I encounter words like pumplemouse for grapefruit, poubelle for trash bin, farter for waxing, petit ami/petite amie for boyfriend & girlfriend (why their existences become smaller than normal friend=ami?), barbe à papa for cotton candy (literally dad’s beard)… all are fascinating!

じゅうぶん、言いたい事を言わせていただきました。すみませんでした。いえいえ、好きなんです、フランス語。可愛いところも満載です。例えば、グレープフルーツが”ポンプルムース”、ゴミ箱が”プベル”、ね？’恋人’がなぜか普通のお友達の存在よりも小さくなっちゃって、Petit/Petite を足したフレンズ状態になっちゃうのは不思議なんですけど、まぁ、お相手を’キャベツ(chou)’と呼ぶ方達ですので、それもありなのかな？そうそう、綿飴は”お父さんの髭”らしいです。ちょっと遠慮気味になります。

Fami-Chiki & Petite Ambassadors

ファミ・チキとちっちゃいアンバサダー達

I have been meeting many kind people here in Rabat, and if I start writing about each one of them, it will be a looong blog. Ana ferhana Bzaaf, hitesh s7abi mzyan (I am so happy thanks to amazing friends)!

ラバトに住みはじめてから、たくさんの心優しい方達に出会っております。一人一人のご紹介ブログを書いたらすごく長くなりそう。本当に幸せでございます！😍

I have often attended “Rabat Language Exchange” held in the Agdal area. It’s a perfect opportunity to meet locals who study English and want to speak English, or to meet people from other countries who are here studying or working (like us), therefore, learning Darija, or French, or whatever language they would like to speak! We end up talking about cultural differences, or just simply chatting about food, music, art… anything 🙂 

こちらで、開催されるRabat Language Exchangeを通して知り合ったローカルの人たちや、仕事や留学などさまざまな理由で滞在しているラバティのみなさんとの時間、英語、フランス語、ダリジャ語を使いながら、いろんな文化の違いを話したりできる貴重な時間です。

There, I met this cute Salma-chan❤️! She is originally from Marrakech – but is currently in Rabat for her internship at one of the government functions. She is a super-cool young lady (you can tell, yeah?) and to make her EVEN MORE cool, she studied at Meiji University as an exchange student! So she speaks Japanese!!!

そこで出会ったかわいいサルマちゃん💕。マラケシュ出身のクールな彼女、交換留学生として日本の明治大学に通っていたんですって！日本語もめっちゃうまくてサイコー🇯🇵! 今は、インターンとして、ラバトにある政府機関でお仕事中～。

“I miss the Tuna-Mayo🍙 Onigiri at Japanese convenience stores…” she said, in Japanese. Oh, it touches my heart. 「日本にいたときの＜コンビニのツナマヨ＞が懐かしい～」って。しかも日本語で言ってくれちゃうんですもの、もうたまりません。

And then, she continues; “Also, I wanted to try ‘Fami-Chiki’ but I couldn’t because it wasn’t Halal.” OMG, I could cry… my maternal love got at its max level! “Auntie Tomo will make it for you – just wait, you deserve it, Wakha?”

そして「ファミチキってね、食べたかったけど、ハラルじゃないから食べれなかったんだよねぇ。。。」えええぇ、かわいそう～😭もう、これは、トモおばちゃん、作ってあげる！日本でがんばってきたサルマちゃんへのささやかなご褒美です！日本を好きでいてくれてありがとう😻😻😻

So, I made a bento with fried chicken (not Fami-Chiki) made with halal chicken and tuna mayonnaise rice balls, to appreciate for her being such a great example of cool & happy ambassador from Morocco to Japan! Chukran Bzaaf! というわけで、しっかりハラルの鶏肉で（ファミチキじゃないけど）唐揚げと、ツナマヨのおにぎりのお弁当を。

This handsome-bogos man🕺🏻 in front is Sam-san. He works as a coordinator in charge of homestay programs for students from the US. I have a HUGE respect for what he does. When I was in Seattle, as part of my interpreter duties, I often worked collaboratively with homestay coordinators – such as giving introduction meetings for international students from Japan, guided tours in the area, or communicating with host families. So, I know how important the role of homestay coordinator is, at the same time, how hard it is. Hats off 🎩👏 to Sam-san!  Thanks to people like you, Morocco and the US will continue to have an amazing relationship 🙂 

お写真に写っている、ハンサム·サムさん（笑うところですよっ）。こちらのラバトにやってくるアメリカ人学生のホームステイを担当しているコーディネーターです。私もシアトル時代は、通訳業務の一環で、日本からの留学生受け入れ対応や、ホストファミリーとのやりとりなど、ホームステイ分野の業務を手伝ってきましたので、その苦労はすごーーーーくわかります。また、コーディネーターというお仕事の大切さも。サムさんのような方のおかげで、モロッコとアメリカの友好が続いていくんですよねぇ。

Being at the Language Exchange often makes me feel that we are somewhat participating in casual United Nations meetings 🌍, or, everyone here is a petit ambassador. Maybe, it is a good idea to act like a mini ambassador, anyway. See, you don’t necessarily need to represent your country, but you could represent what you really believe that you want to represent. Kindness? Sense of humor? Oh, I also learned something; parties and events can be just as exciting without the help of alcohol! You can be pretty funny and wild without booze – you just need good halal chicken🍗 🙂 

ランゲージ・エクスチェンジにいると、ちっちゃなUnited Nations🌏の会議にいるような、そして、みんな一人一人ががある意味＜ミニ·アンバサダー＞のような感じがしたり、です。また、いわゆるパーティーやうちあげ、などが、アルコールの力がなくても、十分盛り上がれる、というのもスンバラしい事です！お酒より、ハラルのお肉🐓があればよし！
