How to mail postcards from Rabat (with Inshallah)

モロッコからMission Impossibleな絵葉書を送る

I guess I am old-fashioned. I love sending/receiving postcards with exotic designs of stamps and pictures unique to each country. I especially like imagining the sound when the postcard hits the recipient’s mailbox – ‘plop!‘ 

こんなに世界がオンラインで繋がっている世の中ですが、なぜか今でも「絵葉書」を書くのが好きです。その国ならではのデザインがほどこされた切手を貼ったり、そのハガキが郵便ポスト届く時の「コトンッ」っという音を想像したり、、、そういうのが好きなんですよね。

So, I thought it would be fun to mail postcards to my family and friends from Rabat. I got stamps from Poste Maroc and I was ready to get postcards! 

で、ラバトからも絵葉書を送ろうと、まずはこちらの郵便局で切手を購入。王様いっぱいで、準備万端！では、ハガキをゲットしましょう〜

It wasn’t an easy task – I couldn’t find any postcards featuring Rabat. Pourquoi (why)? Not at the train station, which should be the gateway to Rabat, not in the Medina, or not even at Moroccan souvenir stores – I can only find argan oil related stuff, magnets, camel plushies, etc. Really, pourquoi? 

と思いきや、ない。ラバトの絵葉書が売っていないんです。なぜ？街の玄関である駅の売店にも、メディーナにも、モロッコ・グッズを売っているお土産屋さんにも、どこにもない。アルガンオイルやマグネットやラクダのお人形はあるのに、絵葉書はない。。。😔

Then, J’ai une bonne idée – let’s go to the touristy area. Maybe there is a vendor who sells postcards for gaijins! Sure, Kasbah, here I come! “Kasbah of the Udayas“, and even Tom Cruise came to film for one of his Mission Impossible movies (number… ?). Result? 

そこでアイデアが💡-「観光地に行けばいいんじゃない？そこでガイジンさん相手（私みたいな）にベンダーさんが絵葉書売ってるかも。そうだ、カスバに行ってみよう！」と。カスバとは、ラバト内でも有数の観光地で、17世紀に作られた城塞地区。中に入ると、まるでギリシャにでもいるような青と白の壁に囲まれた雰囲気で、眺めも良い人気の場所です。あのトム・クルーズも映画撮影でやってきた場所ですし、きっとここなら絵葉書の一枚くらい、と思ったら。。。

🥳I found it! あった、あった！🥳

But, none of them was Rabat one. They are Marakesh, Fez, Casablanca, or even Meknes… No Rabat postcards. Again, pourquoi? 🤨 So, I had no choice but to buy these neutral ones.

ですが、あるのは、ラバト以外の街ばかり。カサブランカ、マラケッシュ、フェズ、メクネス、他。なんでぇ🤦🏻‍♀️しょうがないので、ニュートラルなこちらを購入。

However, at one of the art dealers nearby, I found these unique postcards – of course, they were sent to my kids. 

アートショップで、こういうのを見つけてしまい、心を大きくひかれたため、つい購入（さっそく子供達のもとへ）。

Here is my “Mission Impossible”:

I found out the exact prices of postcards after I sent out mine to the US and Japan. Nice Sidi at Porte Maroc said that I put two of the 4.10MAD stamps and one of the 9.80MAD stamps on each card, so I did. Three Mr. Kings on each postcard looked really good (Peace be upon him, Mr. King). HOWEVER – to my parents in Japan – the price is slightly different… 18.10MAD postage needed (to the US, it is 16.30MAD) ?

郵便局の優しいお兄ちゃんに教わった通り、アメリカへ送るための絵葉書に4.10MADの切手を2枚、そして、9.80MADの切手を1枚貼って送りました。「ハガキ郵送はきっと世界共通だよね！」と勝手に理解して、日本の両親にも同じように送ってしまった後にこのような事実を知り、、、

Oh, dear! It was short on 0.10MAD! Ahhhhh! But, it’s too late – all my postcards have been dropped, there is no way I can take them back. Are they going to terminate the delivery? Is Tom Cruise going to help me somehow? This is a true “Inshallah” moment, I have to say. 

つまり、0.10MAD(約1セント）足りていないんです、、、。どうしよう、これで郵送不可になるのかしら。もうすでに投函してしまったし、私的にはもうすでにミッション・インパッシブル。トム・クルーズさん、助けてくれるかしら？まさに、インシャーラな世界、結果は後ほどお知らせします。

Storks bring you good luck and nostalgic flavor

コウノトリさんが持ってきてくれる幸運と懐かしい味

Storks. In Japan, they are known to bring good luck, and they are also known to transport babies, which is also a sign of good luck (most of the time, I’d like to believe). I am not sure if this delivery system is a good luck from the babies’ point of view, but I am not going to argue with it here. 

日本では、幸せを持ってきてくれる鳥として知られているコウノトリさん。そしてくちばしの中に赤ちゃんを運んできてくれるという、これも幸せ（だと思います）のお役目度が高い鳥さんなのですが、赤ちゃんにとってはどうなのかなぁ。キツキツそうですよね。

Now, a visit to Chellah is really something special in Rabat. While its ancient archaeological Roman ruins and Muslim royal necropolises are impressive to see, there are so many storks all over the site, nestling and chilling as if they are the kings & queens of the area. Some say they are the “Guardians of Chellah“, but, to me, they look more royal and noble than just guardians. And they talk to you! The sound they make – absolutely stunning! I actually counted how many were there – 73 – without binoculars. Maybe more, if I was with members of Wild Bird Society of Japan (note: I appreciate them especially because my parents both worked for NHK, and WBSJ always supports NHK’s signature show, Kohaku Uta-Gassen. I know, I know, such a personal feeling here…😝). さて、ラバトにあるシェラでは、古代ローマ時代の遺跡とその後に作られた古ーいマリーン朝の城壁跡が見れちゃう世界遺産。それだけでも一見の価値はあるのですが、そこで出会えるのが、たっくさんのコウノトリさん！＜シェラの守護者たち＞と呼ばれているらしいですが、気高く堂々とした風貌は、守護者というよりは、まさに王様＆お妃様達、という感じです。そして、コウノトリさん達の声！これがまたなかなかの発声音でして、、、あまり聞かない音なのでびっくりします。肉眼で数えてみても、73羽いました。日本野鳥の会のみなさん、お呼びしたいです（紅白の後にでも、ぜひ）。ちなみに、シェラやラバトの歴史などについてもっとよく知りたい方、こちらのブログ（英語）もどうぞ。お友達のモハメドさん、Moroccan Food Tourのガイドさんでもあり、ライターさんでもあり、食通さんでもあり、、、すごく勉強になります。

Speaking of storks – Cigognes in French – I am presenting, a very Moroccan soda. さて、コウノトリはフランス語でCigognes。その名前のついたお飲み物について；

This soda has a long history, and it’s a rather iconic drink for Moroccans, I heard. It was first introduced by Brasserie Glacière Internationale in 1929 (one year after Mickey Mouse was born!) to satisfy non-alcoholic drinkers during the protectorate period. However, the 70s came, and the soda couldn’t fight against big names such as Pepsi or Coca-Cola. La Cigogne had to be withdrawn from its production line officially in 1997.

このソーダは、1929年に発表され（ミッキーマウス君より1歳年下ですね）モロッコ人なら絶対知っている銘柄だそうです。要は、保護領時代に、お酒を飲まない方達をターゲットに作られた、と。当時は大々的な人気だったそうですが、70年代に入るとペプシ社やコカコーラ社の製品には勝てず、、、で、その後も売れ行きはのびず、1997年には製造を完全中止となる事に。

Sad, sad, sad… なんとしたことか。😭😭😭

However, the Renaissance arose due to high demand! “La Cigogne“ returned to shelves around hanut and supermarché in October 2024!

しかーし、ルネサンスです！Cigogneソーダは、2024年の10月から、晴れてモロッコのお店の棚に再度並んでおります！

Goût – taste? Hmm, even though I am not Moroccan, I felt somewhat nostalgic. It tasted like Mitsuya Cider. Maybe because I heard about the history of this special soda? or Hitesh (because), I like the logo; notice, there is Flag of Japan hiding, yes?

さて、そのお味はというと。私はモロッコ人ではないですが、なんというか”懐かしい味”？日本のミツヤ・サイダーを思い浮かべる味、がしました。このLa Cigogneのストーリーを知っていたからでしょうか、それとも、このロゴ・デザインをよく見ると、日本の国旗が隠れているからでしょうか？？？

Storks are back! They will bring good luck to everyone! More babies are delivered (maybe)!

このソーダを飲めば、コウノトリのごとく、きっとみなさんに幸運もやってくるでしょうし、赤ちゃん達もやってくる（のかな）？

What I found in search of delicious Tofu in Morocco

モロッコで美味しいお豆腐を求めた先に見つけたもの

“We are What We Eat” -that is totally true. Food can impact our mood, our lifespan, and maybe our relationship with others. Although I embrace different kinds of food and a variety of flavors around the world, I definitely feel that my Japanese DNA requires “goût Japonais (Taste of Japan)” occasionally.

『人間を形づくるものは食なり』とはよく言ったものですよね。食べ物によって、考え方や生き方、そしてコミュニケーションも変わっていくような気がします。私はいろいろな国のいろいろなお味が大好きですが、やはり、日本人DNAを持つ体、時として、”日本のお味”も恋しくなります。

But… mais… walakin… it isn’t that easy to obtain authentic Japanese groceries here in Rabat. That’s the hard truth. Well, no, let me put it this way; I have been spoiled in Seattle & Barcelona, where I could just get anything Japonais for the ingredients. So, it’s time to change my perspective. I should learn to be more creative (for example: let’s make my own Natto!).

しかーし。ここラバトで日本食材を調達するのは簡単ではないのがわかってしまった、辛い事実。というか、すぐ近くで日本食材が手に入ったという、今までのシアトルやバルセロナ生活では、かなり甘やかされていたのだと思います。ではでは、ちょっぴり視点を変えて「手に入るものだけでクリエイティブに修正した日本食！」にしようかな、と（納豆も自分で作るしかないか、、、）。

Or, I should appreciate anything I can find at the local stores if it is Japanese… even something like this – 例えばこういうお豆腐だって、ありがたいものです; A mysteriously bubbly tofu – and a very, very small one, for 50MAD (about $5). My heart didn’t go bubbly. But, if this is what I have to live with, I am okay with it. I will just look forward to a time when I get to eat good tofu somewhere. Inshalla. 🙏

この不思議な、泡立ちのいい？穴いっぱいのお豆腐、しかも小ちゃくて5ドルほどのお値段。私の心は正直バブリーにはなれないお豆腐ちゃん。そっかぁ、これからはこの”泡立ち豆腐”との生活かぁ、シアトルか日本で美味しいお豆腐食べればいいね〜と思っていた矢先に。。。

Then, I found this amazing yet ambiguous (btw, I like “ambiguë” in French) information: “Petit marché des produits chinois avec des prix raisonnables, Vous pouvez le consulter chaque mardi à Rabat près du consulat du chine (small market selling Chinese products. Reasonable Price. Every Tuesday near the Chinese Consulate – 小さなマーケットが毎週火曜日に中国領事館近くでオープンします。値段もリーズナブル).”

🤔🤔🤔

Well, there is only one way to find out☝️! I bet they have tofu there! So, my husband and I took a nice 40mins morning walk to the Chinese Consulate building, passing the Embassy of Japan (yay!) on its way, and… 

これは行ってみなければ！と思い、旦那さんと40分かけてテクテクお散歩。途中、日本大使館前を通り、テンション上がりました❤️

Hooray🙌 There IS a market! Petit Marché, it is! あった！あった！Yes! There is Tofu! Also, lots of asian veggies, condiments, pork, etc… I became SO BUBBLY!!!!!🎉🫧お豆腐はもちろん、アジア系のお野菜や調味料、餃子の皮や豚肉さんなど充実しておりましたぁ。

I met three wonderful Japanese ladies here as well – who are “Rabati” Senpai to me – they are very friendly & kind, to welcome my husband and me in this neighborhood. Merci & Chukran & Arigato Gozaimasu.

そして、マーケットで日本語ではなしかけてくれた美女３名、私にとっては大せんぱいのすてきなラバティの方々に出会えました。みなさん、フレンドリーで優しくて🥰。火曜日の朝の楽しみが増えてしまいました❣️ありがとうございます。

Marché Sidi (Sidi = Master in Darija – I decided to call him) said “Yup, we come every Tuesday. Yup, we would like to open a real store in Rabat soon (he already has a shop in Casablanca). Yup, please wait. Yup, it’s 120MAD today.” He is goooooood.

マーケット・マスターいわく、「毎週このようにオープン・マーケットできているけど、もうすぐお店も開く予定だからね〜。待っててねぇ〜。今日は120ディラハムねぇ〜。」と。いいなぁ、Sidi。

I got there around 10:30am, and I fel it was a bit too late. There were already lots of people and some “hot & popular” items in those plastic boxes became low at that time. Also, the line for the payment (cash only) takes time, so there was a long que. Kind of like Disneyland – it’s a small world after all. Next time, I will probably try to be there earlier. 

10時30分頃に到着したのですが、ちょっと遅かったかも。既にたくさんの人、箱の中のアイテムはだいぶ減って来ていたようだし、そしてお会計（現金のみ）はディズニーランド並みの長蛇の列。次回はもっと早く行こう！と心に決めました。

These are the items we purchased for aujourd’hui – not bad for 120MAD, no? I love that their tofu makes sure to tell us that it IS tofu, by its stamp. I feel bubbly again with such unnecessary details.

今日の勝利品🏆。12ドルでこれは素晴らしすぎるぅ。そしてお豆腐にしっかりと別に必要ないのに「お豆腐です」と押印されているところにも、さらにバブリーな気持ちになる私。🎊🛀

And, they became un dîner japonais incroyable pour la nuit! Sidi’s tofu was so yummy! こちらはさっそくお夕食の材料となり、夫婦そろって美味しくいただきました。もちろん、マスターのお豆腐は最高です-Bnin Bezzaf (so delicious) !

Passion, Creativity and Future through Art in Rabat

ラバトのストリート・アートにワクワク

When we lived in Barcelona, I really enjoyed the extensive and massive amount of graffiti art in the city, and its constant change & excitement of scenes and its phases, as if each graffiti is talking to each other, or maybe it is telling a story to pedestrians. I am a HUGE fan of art; in fact, my passion for art led me to become an art model as an occupation (not a fashion model – I pose for painters, sculptures, etc.).  And, possibly, my son thought that his art-loving mom’s passion wasn’t so bad that he also started liking art – now he studies graphic art at RISD – I am so proud of him – you can take a look of Koji’s works here 🙂

バルセロナに住んでいた時、街中に溢れんばかりのグラフィティ・アートに圧倒されつつ、その生き生きと変化する様子や、アートそのものが語り合いながら、あるいは、私たちに話しかけながら存在している感じが大好きでした。もともと美術鑑賞が大好きでして、それが理由で、サイドビジネスとして絵や彫刻のモデル業をはじめ、また、そんな母親を持つ息子もアート大好きっ子になり、現在ロードアイランド・スクール・オブ・デザインにてグラフィック・アートを勉強中（最近の作品はこちら）です。

I have to say, Rabat surprised me with quite the number of murals in the city, and it has been soooooooo uplifting to encounter them every day! Apparently, Rabat is the home of “Jidar Street Art Festival” since 2015, and these murals are examples of its successful past events. How lucky we are, to be able to add MORE beauty to an already beautiful city like Rabat. One of the invited artists last year for the Jidar was Kaori Izumiya-san, and she created this amazing mural which I was totally mesmerized!

ラバトに越してきてから、「この街にもたぁくさんのストリート・アートがあるじゃな〜い」と嬉しいサプライズが。それもそのはず、この街は、Jidarストリート・アート・フェスティバルなるイベントを１０年ほど前から開催していたんですね。そして去年2024年度には、カナダ在住の日本人アーティスト、いずみやかおりさんもやってきて、こーんな美しい壁画を作成してくださいました！

I am just going to put some photos from my phone – yes, all from my daily walk. My photo library is very simple – only three concepts: 1) art 2) food 3) cats 😂 とりあえず、日々のお散歩などで撮った壁画写真（ラバトに来てから、ワタシの携帯内の写真は、アート＋食べて美味しかったもの＋猫が主です）をどうぞ。🎨🍗🐈

And, I hope more murals will be added through the Festival this year, and a year later, and later, and later! we might all get to feel like being in the middle of the creation of a HUGE picture book… no? ✍️📚 Who will write the exciting story? Who is going to be the main character? (Maybe, it’s YOU! 😉)

今年も、来年も、再来年も、ずっと Jidarストリート・アート・フェスティバルが開催されて、たくさんの壁画がラバトに描かれていくといいなぁ、、、と思っております。まるで、街をあげて、一冊の絵本を作り上げていくような、そんな気持ちになっちゃいます。📕📗📘 絵本のストーリーは？そして主人公はだれでしょう？（それは、アナタかも！ウフフ😚）

The more I walk, the more I get to see the murals. I feel the passion, I feel the creativity, and I feel the future. And I feel the opportunity of the city and, I can’t stop feeling so lucky that I am in that opportunity as well – that’s the power of Art, yes? 

歩けば歩くほど、アートに出会える日々。一つ一つに情熱を感じて、創造力を感じて、未来を感じて、そして可能性を感じます。その可能性の中には、＜ラバトという街の可能性＞っていうのもあって、「そういう街に住んでいられるんだぁ。幸せだなぁ。」と、加山雄三さん的に思う今日この頃です。

Fighting Perimenopause in Morocco

モロッコで更年期と闘う

If you are human with female reproduction organs, you will likely have to go through various menopause/perimenopause symptoms. And they are no joke. I am 52 years old, therefore, I AM experiencing all sorts of crazy stuff every day – the hard ones are brain fog and dizziness. Wait, I also get sleepless nights and terrible headaches. Am I moody? Ask my husband, he will tell you. I learned that they do come in whichever continent you live on, even when you live with the most caring husband in the world (Je suis désolé, mon mari.).

女性の生殖機能を持つ方でしたら、更年期のもろもろは必ずしもやってきちゃうのではないでしょうか？私は現在52歳、よって更年期障害を絶賛”障害中”、楽しくない時や、「ゲっ、まじ？」っていう事も多々あり。ボーッとするわ、クラクラするわ、寝れないし、頭痛もするし、気も滅入ったり。地球上のどの大陸に住んでいても、どんなに心優しい旦那さんと一緒にいても、更年期障害はやってきちゃうんですねぇ（ごめんね、ダーリン）。

By the way, I always wonder why menopause/perimenopause issues are not so discussed openly. I also wonder how in the world ladies at my age stay positive & get support during this challenging phase. Anyway, here in my salon, I decided not to be shy about my journey through this transition – so that we, as women in “second puberty”, can feel that we are not alone, that we don’t feel ashamed, and that we can overcome together! 

しかしながら、この更年期障害ってあまりにもオープンに話されてないなぁと思っていまして。ならば、私のサロン・ブログでは、あえて自分の更年期時期についても書いてしまおうかと。そして他にも同じ時期を過ごしている方がいらっしゃったら「ひとりじゃないよ〜恥ずかしくないよ〜大丈夫だよ〜」と一緒に乗り越えられたらいいなぁと。💗💪💗💪💗

One of many many many reasons of our relocations to Morocco is, I find (and I would like to believe!) that Moroccan life seems to be more gentle & more friendly to my “second puberty” days. Here are some of my findings I would like to share 😍

実は、私たち夫婦がモロッコへの移住を決めたもろもろの理由の中で、この＜障害＞に対しても「あら、良いんではないかしらん？？」と思う事が多々ありまして。それらをここに綴ってみようかと思います。

Juice! Juice! Juice! Oh how I adore fresh jus de orange! Come to me, Vitamins!

モロッコはフレッシュ・ジュースの天国です。特にオレンジジュースは、オーダーしてからスクィーズがディフォルト。ジュースに含まれるビタミンは絶対体に良いはず！😘

Mint tea heaven Yes, Morocco’s national drink, Atay bn3an3a (mint tea) is great for women in menopause, as mint can be effective in reducing the discomfort of hot flashes, rebuilding the hormonal balance, and helping to get a better sleep (I heard). Merveilleux!

ミントティーはこちらの国民的ドリンクですが、このミントには、ほてりを減らしたり、ホルモンバランスを整えたり、睡眠の質を高めたりする効果があるそうです。素晴らしすぎる！

Interaction with people – real, physical ones Since I don’t drive here, I walk every day, go to school, do grocery shopping, etc. So, I make physical contact with people. Then, I learned that Moroccans are the most hospitable, the kindest, and the sweetest people on earth. Plus, they are so good at smiling at strangers – even with silly foreigners like me. Some uncles look kind of scary at first, but then when I say “ssalam lekum (hello)” or “aafak (please)”, they give me the biggest smile and some Bollywood star-like hand gestures which make those uncles look like SRK. I don’t underestimate the power of human energy.

車を所有しない生活にしよう！と決めまして、語学学校へも買い物へも、全て徒歩、あるいは、トラムやバスを利用中。すると毎日「人と人との出会い」があるんですよね。ちゃんと目と目を合わせてコミュニケーションしてくれる。モロッコの方達って、最初は見た目が怖そうなおじさんでも、ちょっと会話すると本当に優しくて、カッコいい＜モロッコ・ジェスチャー＞付きで返してくれて。ボリウッド・スター並みの輝きがあります。こういう人間同志のエネルギーって大切なのかなぁって思います。

Fresh Produce Heaven (and nuts) Markets here are full of fresh produce, and shopkeepers make sure to give us the best stuff! Avocado, leafy greens, carrots, tomatoes. Everything tastes good.

新鮮な野菜やナッツが豊富で、お店の人も良い素材を選んでくれちゃう。幸せでございます。

No need to show your bodyline Djellaba is our friend. One way or the other, we need to accept that we all gain weight anyway, so, why not be more acceptable to our body and also be flexible about our choice of clothes? Furthermore, Jellaba is pretty, and people will appreciate you when you wear local clothes – which’ll make you feel good (energy boost!)

ジェラバは、ローカルの皆様がよく着用するガウンのようなお洋服なんですが、これが体の線を隠してくれて、しかも美しくドレッシー。最高の装いです。そりゃあこの時期、何キロか増えちゃいますもの、しょうがないじゃあないですか。でもね、このジェラバを着ていると「あらぁ、ガイジンがモロッコの服きてるよ〜。いいねぇ〜」って喜んでもらえます。嬉しくなります。世界平和のために一役買っているような良い気持ちにもなります（かなり勝手な良い気持ち、ではあります）。

Hammam & Argan Oil feel goooooood Who can complain about Spa time, no?

モロッコのスパ、ハマム、そしてアルガンオイルに関しては、また後日に詳しくブログにしようかと思います！

No shortage of Cat Cuteness Sorry if you are a dog person (but I am actually not THAT sorry). Cats rule!

猫好きな方にはたまらない、街に出れば野良猫ちゃんがいっぱい＆癒しがいっぱい。犬好きの方は、ごめんなさい。

Un Petite Joie – Small Joy

ちいさな幸せ

Someone said “in Morocco, drinking mint tea is not just for enjoying its taste, or for satisfying your thirst. It is our identity, it is our ritual, and we take a whole experience VERY seriously” As I like to respect local culture, I deceided to choose my Beraad Atay (tea pot) seriously.

モロッコの方によると「ミントティーを味わう時って、ただ飲んで喉を潤すだけじゃないんだよね。ある意味、俺らのアイデンティティっていうか、自分達のルーツにのっとってるって言うか、、、まぁ、結構シリアスなわけよ」と。ローカル文化をできるだけ敬いたい私は、我が家のティーポットも”シリアス”に選ぶ事にしました。

This is my Beraad Atay which I gave serious thought to (and I had some serious problems speaking in Darija😅).　シリアスに選んだポットちゃんが、こちら〜（選んだマーケットで、ダリジャ語でシリアスな苦労もしました）。

By the way, I thought it was easy to make Atay bna3na3 (mint tea) at home, BUT it isn’t so. It actually has a few steps (first, soak the Gunpowder tea, then keep the first infusion called “spirit” aside, then rinse the leaves. Add hot water & sugar & mint and let the kettle boil & caramelize the sugar, then don’t forget to add the “spirit” back…) and it all takes tender & loving care. Patience, yes, PATIENCE. Moroccan culture is teaching me the value of patience, even during a tea making process. I love it! (and I have still not yet mastered… it will take a while, maybe another 10 years). 

ところで、ミントティーって作るの簡単だろうと思っていたら大間違い、でして、まず、ガンパウダー茶（中国産の緑茶なんですが、このネーミングからして最初からハードル高かったです）に熱湯を注いで、そこで最初に煎じたもの、”スピリット”とよばれますが、それは残す。その後に葉を熱湯で再度ゆすいでから、さらにお湯と砂糖、ミントを加えて沸騰させて、最後に”スピリット”も足して、、、と、なかなか時間と手間がかかるのでした。そっかぁぁ、ここでも「モロッコの忍耐力」を学ばさせていただける、ありがたい事です。そして私がミントティーを上手にできるようになるまでは、後１０年は必要かと思います。

And now, this is my “Un Petite Joie (small joy)” – Mr. (or Ms?) Beraad Holder. そしてこちらはおまけでもある、＜ちいさな幸せ＞ちゃんの、ポットホルダー君（さん？）です😻。

Wait, this reminds me of something… oh, that good old Calpis poster (*Calpis is a Japanese non-carbonated soft drink, very Natsukashii – nostalgic – taste of sweet yogurt). I kind of like the way s/he has a sneaky smile… 🙂 

昭和な時代をご存じのみなさま、禁止になってしまったあのカルピスのキャラに、なんだか似ていませんか？そして、私個人的には、ちょっぴりニヒルな口元の笑いがたまらない魅力です。怪しい何かがはじまりそうです。

Oh, and, s/he has long hair? Well, let’s give it a personal touch, to make this holder slightly “Moroccan-Japanese.” This is Mizuhiki – an ancient Japanese artform of knot-tying. 

あら、っと気がついたら、ロン毛ちゃんだったりしたので、水引のヘア・アクセなどつけて、（せっかく我が家に来てくれたので）ポキート🤏、＜ザ・ジャポン🎌＞な雰囲気にもなっていただきました。

Poor Sa7bi (friend – male) or Sa7bti (friend – female), whenever I open the lid, it hits its head.. sorry & smahli & désolé! But, please stay positive – let the “Spirit” be your guide!!

ちょっとかわいそうなのが、ポットの蓋を開けるたびに、ホルダーちゃんの頭が「ゴツンッ！」ってなっちゃう。ごめんねぇ〜🙇🏻‍♀️　でも、”スピリット” いっぱいで、頑張ってー🫡🤞

Meet “YOLALA”

”ヨララ”さんをご紹介

I love music – any kind of music. I appreciate musicians, I appreciate instruments, and I appreciate any enviroments & inspirations which create music. The only thing I am not a big fan of is tambourine played during church services (long story). 

私は音楽が大好きでして、ミュージシャンの方達、楽器の数々、そして音楽を創造して演奏する環境、全てに感謝感激してしまうタイプなのですが、一つだけ苦手なのは、教会礼拝中のタンバリンの音です（これはちょっと別トーク😝）

I was lucky enough to get to know a friendly group of musicians here! Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for… “YALALA”!!!🎤👏👏👏

さてさて、ラバトで出会ったバンド、YOLALAさんをご紹介しまーす！カタカナで書くとなんかヨーデルみたいでかわいい？💕

Let me introduce these talented & handsome musicians here! Youssef (darbuka & vocal), Yahya (guitar & vocal), Yassine (guitar & vocal), Ayouib (keyboard & vocal). Their genre of music is so versatile: Moroccan, African, American, ANYTHING! Oh, and they are also very good at skateboarding. 

モロカン太鼓（ダルブカ）のヨーセフ君、ギターのヤハヤ君、やはりギターのヤシン君、そして携帯キーボードを巧みに操るアユイブ君、みんな歌って、みんなイケメン。みんな上手で、みんな、なかなかのスケボー野郎くんでもあります（笑）。

Want to catch their sound? Check them out at El Bahia – you might be lucky to find them jamming at the salon, like these ラバトのメディーナにあるBahiaカフェに行くと、彼らの演奏をきける確率高し！ですよん。こんな感じです;

One time, we hung out in Fifties Cafe. Many musicians (pro/semi-pro/amateurs) tend to gather at this place, I heard. Good creative & artistic vibe there. It was after midnight, and somehow I got a feeling of being in a little bar in New York (Brooklyn side). Or, it was because, I was drinking “Coca-Cola Original” which created a bit of illusion – too much sugar… yes, I was slightly “sugar-high.” Of course, after getting out from the cafe, I saw many stray cats and signs of Maroc Telecom, then I knew I was in Morocco.

Fiftiesというカフェでも一緒になってジャミングしてたのですが、なんとも言えない薄暗い雰囲気といい（夜中だったから？）、いろんなミュージシャンが集まってる感じといい、まるでNY、それもブルックリン側にいるような錯覚を起こしていた私。不思議な空間と、いつもは飲まない＜レギュラーコカコーラ＞の糖分のせいかもしれません。お外にでれば、野良猫さんたちとアラビア文字で、しっかり「あなたは今モロッコです」と説得させられました。

“Music is the best ingredient to make everyone come together.” – “La musique est le meilleur ingrédient pour rassembler tout le monde.” – “音楽は全ての人をつなぐ大切な要素です。”

Eid Mubarak & La Lune & Le Chat Affamé

イードとお月様と腹ペコにゃんこ

My husband suggested that we check out the sunset on a beach, then see if we could find a crescent moon 🌙 (to make sure that Eid Al-Fitr is coming!). Sure, it sounds like a fun thing to do! So, we took a walk for about 45 minutes to the beautiful Corniche Rabat. Nice, quiet beach. Some people were walking, running, etc., but I can tell that pretty much everyone was getting ready for their Iftar at home. 

『夕陽の後に上がってくるお月様が見えたらイードが確認できるでしょう？ちょっとビーチまで見に行かない？』という旦那さんの楽しいアイデア！に乗っかってテクテクと45分。ラバットのコーニッシュと呼ばれるビーチに着くと、ウォーキングの方、走ってる方もちらほら。でも基本は、イフター前で皆さんご自宅にいらっしゃるんでしょうね、静かな雰囲気。

Here we are – admiring a beautiful sunset. Then, we waited for… a beautiful crescent moon! サンセットはきれいでしたが、本日の主役は、その後の三日月様〜。

Then, a special guest appeared. A very friendly chat – cat 🐱 ひとなつっこい、ねこちゃんが。。。

By the way, I found this information: ところで、こんな記載を読みました：

“Fasting on Eid is prohibited in Islam because Eid Al-Fitr is a day of celebration and breaking the Ramadan fast. Observing a fast on Eid Al-Fitr contradicts the essence of the religious occasion, as commanded in Islamic teachings.”

“イードの日の断食は、イスラム教で禁じられています。イード・アル・フィトルはラマダンの断食を解除するお祝いの意味があります。そのような日に断食をするのは、宗教行事の本質に反してしまうからです。”

I am not Muslim, but I think I can be very serious about this “not-fasting” part. And I know I am very good at it (toujours! – always) . My Darija school is off tomorrow; likely many stores are closed as well. My plan for tomorrow is to continue “non-fasting” and study more Darija and French at home.

私はイスラム教徒ではないのですが、この、「断食禁止」に関しては非常に真面目に取り組めるかと思います。しかも、（いつも）とても上手です。明日も学校はお休みだし、お店などもお休み傾向のようです。なので、明日もおうちで断食禁止令を守って過ごす予定です。

WOW! ing for Ramadan in Morocco

ラマダン30日を体験して思った事

Ramadan is almost over, and I can feel that people here are getting ready for Eid. As a non-Muslim living in Morocco, I would like to share some things I’ve experienced during this 30 days. And, the best word to describe all is; “WOW!”

そろそろラマダンも終了、ローカルの皆様はEidに向けて準備に大忙し？なのでしょうか。私はクリスチャンですが、ラマダン30日をモロッコで過ごした感想をいくつか綴ってみます。

“The first WOW!” Everyone, really, EVERYONE fasts. Taxi drivers, Hanout (little neighborhood shops – kind of like 7-11 of Morocco) guys, Hammam ladies, our security guard… everyone does. No cheating, except cats on the street. Of course, people with an ongoing disease, pregnant women, small children, etc. can adjust/skip the practice. God is flexible, God is kind.

まず、とにかく「み〜んな断食する」。タクシーの運転手さんも、コンビニのお兄ちゃんも、ハマムの垢すりおばちゃんも、みーんな。誰も飲まない、食べない、タバコも吸わない。呑気に食べてるのは野良猫ちゃん達くらい。もちろん、例外もありますし、子供さんや妊婦さん達は臨機応変に対応🆗なところは、さすが優しい神様です。

Do you remember, during Covid-19, we would hear “We Are All in This Together” but we were not really together (at least in the US), because there were always some “anti-something” people who just didn’t get the message? Well, not during Ramadan, at least that’s how I felt here. People were all in the Ramadan spirit, so we decided to join, too. We didn’t eat or drink during a day outside for a month. Restaurants were open for the tourists and Gaijins (“foreigners” in Japanese) but we just didn’t feel like it. Was it easy? No, especially because we normally walk 10000+ steps a day 🙂 But I am glad we did – because now, I can appreciate the normal café opening hours.

思い出すのがコロナ禍の時。”みんな一緒に乗り気ろうね！”のキャッチフレーズと、それに乗らない方々も多かったアメリカを思い出します。マスク反対派、ワクチン反対派、と、いろいろありましたが。さて、ラマダン中、私たちもこちらの皆さんに合わせて、断食時間は家以外での飲み食いはしませんでした。毎日徒歩移動のため水を飲まないのはきつかったですが😬、これからカフェなど利用できる時の感謝率が倍増しそうです！

“The second WOW!” This is a time for connecting with family and friends and reassuring how precious human relationships are, and Moroccan people are so good at doing that with FOOD! They are also good at FEEDING FOOD! We were so lucky to have a couple of Iftar meals, (Shukran Bzaaf! Mouna’s family & Muhamed’s family!). And oh boy, we ate & ate – lmakla bnina (delicious food)! I can have Iftar every day – but then, I should have to go to the gym every day. Our lovely Darija class teacher at school even shared with us a special Ramadan “Power Snack” called Sellou. Our neighbor gave us Chebakiya cookies. We are so thankful! 💕

ラマダン中は、断食明けのお夕食、イフタールへの情熱がすごい！必ず食べるべきメニューはあるようですが（ハリラスープ、デーツ、シュバキヤ・クッキーなど）、それに加えて何品にも及ぶお料理。そして、何よりも『もっと食べなきゃ！はい、もっと取って、食べて！』と、まるでふるさとに５年ぶりに帰省した気持ちになります。これが全部美味しいので、やばいです。Iftar毎日オッケーです。でも、みなさんは断食あけのお食事。私は断食はしてなくてこの量。太りますね。ジムに通わないと、です。ダリジャ語の先生から「パワースナックよ！」というセルーもいただきましたぁ。

“The third WOW” I didn’t know Moroccans drive like Indians in Delhi or Mumbai. At around 4pm, during Ramadan. Lots of honking and speeding up, to go home for Iftar. I bet there is even a feeling for survival, after not eating & drinking for more than 12 hours. I totally understand that the traffic gets crazy. However, it is not a good time to stroll for pedestrian (like me) to take a leisurely walk. But then, at around 6pm, it gets all sooooo quiet – and streets are only for Gaijins and chats🐈. What a difference.

断食は12時間以上続く、と言う事はおタバコを吸う方などはそりゃぁ最後の１〜２時間は辛いですよねぇ。そうでなくても、『あともう少しで飲める！食べれる！』となったら、それは早く家に帰りたい。と言うわけで、午後4時5時ごろの道路は大混雑＆大混乱。インドにいるかと思うくらい。ラバトでこれなら、カサブランカとかどうなっちゃうんだろうなぁ。この時間帯は、命懸けで横断歩道を渡りますが、逆に6時ごろになると、人っ子一人いない、殺風景な雰囲気。変なガイジン達と野良猫のみの怪しい夕暮れとなります。

“The Fourth WOW!” Certain stores and restaurants COMPLETELY close during Ramadan. My husband learned in a hard way. I am talking about “Adult Beverages.” Here in Rabat, it is not difficult to purchase or drink wine or beer normally. In fact, there are a couple of wine shops near our apartment (dangerous), and Carrefour has a special adult beverage section called “The Cave.” Olof (my husband) likes The Cave. But, during Ramadan, his man-cave is closed (more like “sealed”) for 30 days. Restaurants don’t serve alcohol, and bars are closed either. Poor Olof. Next year before Ramadan, he knows what to do… in advance!

お酒を飲まない私にはあまり辛い事ではなかったのですが、バイキングの血を引く旦那くん、”ラマダン中はお酒の販売もサービスも一切ございません”メッセージを知らなかったもので、おいおい、、、ちょっと待って〜状態。その名も＜The Cave＞と呼ばれる、カルフールのお酒セクションは、ハエさん１匹入れないくらいしっかりと密封されているし、近くのバーも1ヶ月閉店 (お店としての予想年間収入額、ラマダン月を入れないで計算しているのかな？と余計な心配してしまいました)。とりあえず、オオラフさん、来年度のラマダンに向けて、大きな学びがありました（今年はフェリーでスペインまで行って”買付”してきましたが、来年は早めの準備など、、、）。

“The Fifth WOW!” Just like everyone fasts together, everyone celebrates together. As its holy month of Ramadan ends, there comes Eid Al-Fitr. and it seems to me, very similar to Japanese OSyogatsu. Wear nice clothes, gather with family & friends, eat festive breakfast! Apparently, kids receive money? like Otoshidama. So many similarities. 🙂 

ラマダンが終了すると、イードがやってきますが、すると今度はまさに＜日本のお正月＞的になるようでして、新しいお洋服で着飾って、家族やお友達とあつまってお食事をして（おせちみたいに）、そうそう、子供達はお金をもらったりするようですよ（お年玉🧧？）。聞いた話ですが、旦那様から奥様に『ラマダン中、おつかれ〜』とプレゼントをする文化もあるんだとか？いいですねぇ。

During this Ramadan in Morocco, I grew even more respect toward people in Morocco. Their patience, their commitment, and their love for the family, friends, community, and even their newcomers from other countries, like us… I have been so lucky to be able to notice their wonderfulness. Through people here, I can see God’s amazing work. Eid Mubarak! Peace be upon you – all of you. 

モロッコでのラマダンを体験して、この国の方たちへの尊敬の念がさらに増えた気がします。みなさんの忍耐強さ、献身的なところ、そして家族や友達への愛情、また、私たちのような、海外から来た隣人へも手を差し伸べてくれる温かさ。本当に、この国に住めて＆そういったところを感じる事ができて幸せだなぁと思います。きっと神様（どの神様でもいいんです）が一人一人の中にいるんだろうなぁ。。。世界中のみなさんに平和が注ぎ込まれますように。

Flan Japan & Sauce Samourai

日本プリンとサムライ・ソース

Although my passport says that I am American, my DNA says that I am Japanese. Oui, je suis VRAIMENT japonais, or, Ana yabania 100%. Therefore, anything that reminds me of Japan makes me excited; especially when it contains a mysterious & exotic appearance.

私のパスポート／国籍はアメリカですが、DNAは日本国。よって、モロッコで見かける日本🇯🇵にはついワクワク・ドキドキしてしまいます。特に、ちょっぴりあやしく＆エキゾチックなものには。。。

Such as this 例えばこのようなもの;

A bottle of Samurai sauce with a pink label featuring a sombrero and a dish of meat and vegetables.

This sauce was interesting because it has a Mexican hat design on “OK” logo, and definitely tastes more like a sauce for tacos. Of course, with “picante” spiciness was there, but I like the attitude of Samurai in this. I honestly don’t know what Samurais taste like (I don’t think they taste good – probably sweaty, so salty). Anyway, if I were asked to rename the sauce, I would call this “Samurai Mex” or “Samurai Nas Nas”- to give credit to our Mexician friends for 50% (“nas nas” in Darija means 50-50) . But I am pretty sure no one cares about my opinions regarding the sauce name.

この『サムライソース』に関しては、メキシカンハット付きでいかにも侍風味でないのはわかっていたのですが、つい購入。そもそも、”サムライの味”がわからないのですが、ピカンテソースという事でさすがにポキート、スパイシー。タコスにはきっと合う感じ。ただ、なぜ”侍”なのかは微妙なままです。できたら『侍メキシカンソース』だとか、『侍ナスナス（ナスナスとは、ダリジャ語で50/50の意味）』というネーミングの方が良いのでは？と思いますが、私の意見は無意味でしょうね。

Now this. It’s impressive, in many ways. Its package design has a giant flan, and Ms. Japan in a traditional Kimono, and 1dhm for a box (and makes 4 servings). Amazing. This flan mix has a competitor – clearly, a Moroccan lady. Ms. Ideal. Now, Ms. Ideal comes in 6 packs for 7 dhm (when I purchased). Well… She is on peu special et elle est optimiste, comparing to our Madame Butterfly-ish Ms. Japan, I guess. 

こちらは、見て一瞬で恋に落ちた『Flan Japan』ひと箱たったの1dhm（約10セント）の誘惑、そして日本髪に着物の蝶々夫人的お姉さまが大きなプリンを持っているデザイン。これでプリンが4つできちゃうんですが、彼女にはライバルがいるようで、モロカンなショートヘアの似合う彼女、なんと’６個入りで７dhmという、ちょっぴり強気なおねーさんです。

So, I made flan from both packages and did a comparison. I had to, right?これは両方作って比べるしかない、と。。。

Result? EXACTLY THE SAME. 🍮 Exactement les mêmes. Both were Bnina Bzaaf (very yummy)! I enjoyed decorating the flan as well 🙂 両方全く同じお味で😅でも美味しかったです。コスパよし！デコレーションするのも楽しい、なプリンちゃん達でした。
