Happy Homemade Bagels

なければ作ろう、ホームメードのベーグル

My dear friend, Iyoko-san, is very wise. She says “A mind that can imagine leads to a mind that can create something good” – now, in Japanese, the words Imagination (Sozo: 想像) and Creativity (Sozo:創造) have the same pronunciation – so it’s kind of like a word riddle in Japanese. Anyway, I “imagined” that my husband would be happy to have bagels🥯. Yes, New York Style🗽, chewy inside, crunchy outside bagels, with cream cheese and maybe, smoked salmon. He really likes bagels for breakfast. And, we haven’t seen any bagels in Rabat so far, even at the Boujee Carrefour. 

お友達のいよこさん、とてもとても賢いお方でして、「想像する心が創造をうむのよね✨」と。さすがです🙏。さて、旦那さんはベーグル🥯が大好きなんです。ニューヨーク·スタイル🗽の、中がモチモチ、外がカリッとした、スモークサーモンやクリームチーズと一緒に食べると美味しいやつです。朝食にベーグル、アメリカではよく食べてたんですが、こちらのおしゃれカルフールでもどこでも見当たらない。きっと食べたいんだろうなぁ、あったら嬉しいんだろうなぁ、、、と、彼の心を’想像’していたんです。

Here comes my “creativity” part! Maybe, I can make it at home?よって、”創造”してみましょう、と思いつき、家で作る事に挑戦です！💪

I checked some websites, and, surprisingly, the ingredients are not overwhelming. Something very usual. In fact, I seem to have everything! Ha! ググって調べてみたら、あら、材料は全部家にあるもの。よかった、よかった。

Leeeeet’s try: ではでは始めましょう！

I normally don’t have good relationship with yeast. But this time, I pray and try to have a strong faith. Inshallah. I hope it works… 

イースト菌を使うお料理ってあまり得意じゃないんです。でも、今回は、うまくいくように祈り、信念をもって取り組みました。

For the kneading part, which is suggested for 15mins, I asked Olof to come help, for the last 5 minutes. Since I am 100% Japanese and kneading bread is not in my DNA, I thought it is best that way. His nickname from MIT days was “Loaf”🥖 because he was (and still is!) so good at baking bread. Cute! I do like kneading, though – it makes me think of being a Snow White – I should have birds and chipmunks coming to help and sing with me🐥🐿. 

こねあげなんですが、15分はやった方がいいと。ここはですね、オオラフ先生に最後の5分だけご登場願いました。というのも、私は「パンをこねる」というのに自信がないのですが、彼は、MIT時代に＜LOAF (パン）🍞＞というあだ名さえ付いていたくらい、パン焼き名人！なので、ここはちょっとだけ、プロの手を拝借です👨🏻‍🍳。パンの生地をこねるのって楽しいですよね。なんだか白雪姫になった気分になります。小鳥さんやリスさんが来て歌ってくれそうです🎶。

The dough has to rise for an hour in a warm place. Luckily we have a perfect place – our sun room! その後は1時間ほど温かいところでおやすみ～サンルームがバッチリです。

Then, shape the dough. After that, this is an unique process to give bagels that chewy, mochi-mochi texture. Boiling. Like, giving a dough some Onsen treatment. 

その後形を作ってから、ここがベーグルならではの行程。あのモチモチ感をだすには、お湯でにろにろ～。まるでベーグルちゃん達が温泉に浸かってるようです。

I made a shape of a heart – why not? Is it going to stay in this shape? We will find out. せっかくなので、ハート型も作ってみましたが、ちゃんとそのままの形にのこるかどうか？

And then, baking for 20 mins… anticipation… そして２０分間、オーブンで焼きますと、、、Yay! They are done! And they look like bagels! できた！ベーグルっぽい～！

So, what do you think…?さてさて、お味はいかが？

なぜハロウィーンのフレームかは、なぞです。

Awwww… I think my imagination created some happiness in a little apartment in Rabat. I will be honest, I never thought I was going to make bagels at home, and it was a bit of work – many steps to follow. But, seeing my husband being so happy, I wouldn’t mind doing it again (maybe once in three months – same schedule as my Natto making). And, the heart-shaped bagel stayed in a heart shape! 

私の想像から、創造へつながり、そして、小さなハピネスになりました。まさか自分でベーグルを作る時が来るとは思いませんでしたが（結構手間がかかります、はい）旦那さんの幸せそうな顔をみたら、また作ってもいいなぁと思いました。3ヶ月に一度、かな（納豆作りと一緒の間隔で）。そうそう、ハート型のベーグルもちゃーんとハートの形でいてくれました！

Mr. Gatou’s Sweet Gâteau – The Longest Strawberry Cake

世界一長いいちごケーキはモロカン魂で

Reading Moroccan World News has become a part of my daily routine recently. I find it very uplifting. Many articles are about how Morocco is preparing for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, with better infrastructure and more construction. Better technology and better education. Or some news about religion, relationships with African neighbors or EU countries, and, of course, a lot about how our King’s doing. 

Moroccan World Newsに目を通すのが日課になってきているのですが、気持ちを明るくしてくれる内容が多く、例えば、2030年のワールドカップに向けて、モロッコ王国がいかにその準備に向けて頑張っているかなどなど。より良いインフラや急ピッチで建築物をプランしたり、テクノロジーや教育分野へも30年へ向けてめざましく動いている感があります。他にもよく目にするのが、宗教関連のニュースやアフリカの隣国との関係やヨーロッパ各国とのやりとり、もちろん、王様のご様子なども頻繁に登場します。

フランス在住のモロッコ人シェフ、ユセフ·エル·ガトゥが、世界最長のイチゴケーキで世界記録を更新

Okay, in my opinion, there are so many things to point out here. First, the name of Gatou. Gâteau means “cake” in French. And his name is Gatou? It’s not a stage name, is it? And what is this “longest strawberry cake”? Breaking the record means that someone else made a long cake before? Is there such a competition to make the longest cake? The world is so interesting.

これはツッコミどころがありすぎます。まず、Gatouさんというお名前。Gâteauってフランス語でケーキなんですが、発音が同じじゃないですか。芸名じゃないですよね？そして、「最長のいちごのケーキ」ってなんでしょう？記録を更新ってことは、前にも長いケーキを作った方がいたと言うことですよね？そういう世界がある、ということですよね？世の中はおもしろすぎます。

Anyway, he had to make the longest cake in a skate rink⛸ – in 24 hours. I guess it had to be in a skate rink because of the temperature control. Apparently, the cake was 121.88m long, which exceeded the previous record of 100.48m. Wow. 

彼はアイスケートリンクの中で、24時間かけてこのケーキを作ったそうです。なぜスケートリンクか。要は大きな冷蔵庫の役目をしたのでしょうね。❄️ さて、この最長いちごケーキちゃん、121.88メートルだったそうで、前回の100.48メートルを大きく上回っています。すごいわぁ。

Mr. Gatou used: こちらの材料ですが：

4000 eggs　卵 🥚

150kg of sugar　お砂糖 🍬

560kg of cream 　生クリーム🥛

350kg strawberries  いちご 🍓

I bet it was not possible to do this challenge in the US, with the high price of eggs. アメリカの卵の値段を考えると、フランスでケーキを作って正解ですね。

After receiving the Guinness World Record, this strawberry cake was given to members of the Moroccan community in France, and distributed to local senior centers, hospitals, and fire stations. Seems like Mr. Gatou is quite an interesting person, as he also made a 20-meter-long Galette des Rois (King Cake) in 2021. I bet he will continue to do something more exciting & delicious in the future!

晴れてギネスブックの指定を受けた後、このいちごケーキは、フランスのモロッコ人コミュニティの方達に食べてもらったり、地元のシニアセンターや病院、消防署のみなさんへと配られたそうです。実はこのガトーさん、違うお菓子、ガレット·デ·ロワの20メートル級を2021年に作ってたりして、なかなか面白い方です。これからもなにかやってくれそうな気配！

By the way, we say “It’s a piece of cake!” in English to express things are so easy to achieve. In French, they have a similar expression, “C’est du gâteau! ” I guess the feelings for the sweet cake is universal. For Mr. Gatou, making 120m gâteau was C’est du gâteau – peut être? 😅 You know, there is a really funny show on Netflix with a same title; I highly recommend! (English title: “Nailed it! France)

ところで、英語で『そんなんおてのものよ！』の意味で”It’s a piece of cake!“って言いますが、フランス語でも“C’est du gâteau! “って言うそうです。お国が変わっても、甘いケーキの感覚は一緒なんですね。ガトーさんにとっては、120メートル級のケーキも”C’est du gâteau!”だったんでしょうか。そういえば、Netflixで同じタイトルの面白い番組みれますよ〜。オススメです。(英語名はNailed it! France)

Yallah! to the Int’l Book Fair

国際ブックフェアへ行きました

We went to the Salon international de l’édition et du livre (SIEL: Rabat International Book Fair), because we saw this add on a tram… 

先日、近くのイベント会場で行われている、ブックフェアーへ足を運んできました！それと言うのも、地元のトラムでこのようなデザインを見てしまったので、、、That’s my Smarf! スマーフではないですか!

Since our kids left home, we have always taken Grumpy Smurf plushy (Schtroumpf is what it’s called here) everywhere. So, we couldn’t miss this book fair!📚

子供達が巣立ってから、小さなグランピーなスマーフ人形を自分達の子供のようにどこにでも連れていく（もちろん、モロッコにも来ています）私たち老夫婦、やはりこのブックフェアーは見逃せません！📕📗📘

Wow, it’s a lot bigger than we thought – the venue was huge! No wonder, it has 30 years of history, it has 30 years of popularity. But, the entrance fee is only 10MAD (about 1 dollar), so it is very accessible and welcoming. There were over 700 booths at the event, and exhibitors were from 48 countries, not only from Morocco, but also Kuwait, Egypt, the UK, and the Netherlands, etc. It’s so festive!

と言うわけで向かってみたら、あらまぁ、大掛かり。さすが30年の歴史あるフェアーです。入場料10MAD(約1ドル）で、たくさんの人が入場しやすくしてあげているところも良いですよね。会場には、700を超えるブース、モロッコ王国だけでなく、クウェートやエジプト、イギリスやオランダなど、48カ国からもはるばると出品者／出展者さんが集まっていました。

The first place we went in was, bien sûr, the Smurf House. It was very popular with the children, but the silly adults had fun, too.😁

最初に向かったのはもちろん、こちらではLes Schtroumpfsと呼ばれるスマーフの館。子供達に大人気でしたが、大人達も負けじと楽しみました（笑）。

There are more than just books to discover. For example, you can visit the replica of the Moroccan parliament (and take a photo!), listen to a discussion by famous authors, join the story time… so many activities are happening. At the Rabat/Sale/Kenitra district booth, I met a very hospitable administrator – I thanked him for letting me live in a wonderful city like Rabat. I promise, I will be a good citizen. 

広ーい会場内には、モロッコ国会内部のレプリカが見られるようになってたり、著名な方達の討論会があったり。ラバト／サレ／ケニトラ行政地区ブースでは、地域のすてきな地域運営者さんともご挨拶。ちゃんと良い市民として過ごします、約束します。ご迷惑はおかけしません。

At the China booth, it seemed like you could ask someone to write your name in calligraphy with 50MAD, which is more than the admission fee. That’s pretty wild. 

（お休み中でしたが）中国ブースで「あなたのお名前を漢字で漢字でかきますよ」コーナーがあったみたいです。入場料より高い50MAD。強気だわ。

What I noticed was that there were so many booths for children’s books. Especially educational ones. I guess education is a key – and people here are very passionate about it. Also, many of them are in English, rather than French. I saw some nostalgic TV📺 characters from the US – I bet Dora says “Yallah!” when she says “Vamanos!” in Darija… but when Swiper the fox says “Oh Man!” what does he say? Is it “Wiliwiliwiliwiliwiliwiliwiliwili!“?

気づいたのは、とにかく”子供さんへのお勉強系の本”が多いこと。教育熱心なのかな。おフランス語ももちろんですが、英語での教育本もけっこう多くて、、、これは最近の変化なのでしょうか。そうそう、見たことあるキャラクター（ドラちゃん）にも出会えて、なんだか懐かしかったです。

The venue is also the starting/finishing point of “Rabat Marathon” the next day, so they seemed to be very busy preparing for it. I really respect those who run in the marathon! I respect them for just having the spirit to “run.” I absolutely can’t run for such a long distance myself, so I snapped a picture of the Smurf at the finish line. This is the best I can do. 🏃🏻

こちら、翌日は＜ラバト·マラソン＞の出発／ゴール地点にもなるということで、その準備で大忙しのようでした。マラソンされる方には、心から尊敬してしまいます！「走ろう！」という心意気があるだけで、大尊敬です。私は絶対に走れないので、スマーフだけでもフィニッシュ·ラインでパチリ。🏃🏻‍♀️

Scandinavia of Africa and Shopping at MIEVIC

アフリカ大陸の北欧と呼ばれる（らしい）モロッコ

There is a shopping mall called Arribat Center, about a 15-minute walk from my apartment. It’s a beautiful mall, reminds me of Ala Moana Center in Hawaii: beautifully decorated, partially open-air mall with large supermarket on the first floor, and a bunch of small retail stores upstairs. There is a food court with a variety of cuisines, including Mitsuki – Japanese. One place I always end up visiting is MIEVIC. At first, I walked in not knowing anything about it, but to my surprise, I found some stuff that I thought was just what I wanted (or I didn’t know I needed, but, now I am convinced that I sooo needed it 😝).

家から歩いて１５分ほどのところに、アリバット·センターと呼ばれるモールがあります。アラモアナ・センターのような美しいモールなんですが、１階には大きなスーパーマーケットがあり、上階には小売店がならび、大きなフードコート（なんちゃって日本食MITSUKIもあるよん）、なんですが、モールの中でつい足を運んでしまうのがこのMIEVICというお店。最初は何もわからず入ってしまった感があったんですが、意外や意外、「あ、これずっと欲しかったんだよねぇ」的なものにであえちゃったんですよ。ベルベット素材のついたハンガーだとか、携帯用フェイスクリーナー·ペーパーだとか、、、。

There is no DAISO in Morocco. YET (please come! Inshallah 🙏). You can find MINISO or YOYOSO, but they are not Daiso, they are not the same… you know what I mean🫢. Speaking of DAISO, when I was in India, I heard the news that DAISO had just opened in Luknow! So I went all the way from Kanpur to check it out (about a 2-hour drive). See, that’s my passion for DAISO, which my Indian family never seemed to understand. 

モロッコにはDAISOがないのですが、MINISOとYOYOSOはありまして、でもなんとな～く違うんだよなぁぁぁぁって思ってたんです。DAISOを愛する私には、どうしても拒否反応が出てしまうのかなぁ。そういえば、インドにいたとき、「LucknowにDAISOができた！」と聞いて、わざわざカンプールからDAISOへ２時間かけて向かったのは良い思い出。インドの家族はその情熱を全然理解してくれませんでしたが、、、。

Now, this MIEVIC at Arribat Center in Agdal. To me, the items they carry are a bit different from YOYOSO’s or MINISO’s. Kitchenware, travel goods, cosmetics, skincare stuff, stationery, accessories, simple electrical appliances, etc., are all cute and simply designed. And, reasonably priced. You can’t help but pick them up because a lot of things make you (or, just me? 😝) feel “Oh! this is smart, Oh!this would be convenient!” They also sell some “female-friendly” products, which I find a big plus. I always support a company that empowers women 💪💃! At MIEVIC, you can pay with a credit card, and the staff are all cheerful and welcoming. It makes your shopping really fun 🥰 Meet Hiba-chan in this picture! She taught me a lot of things the first time we went in – she’s such a kind girl.

さて、このMIEVIC。置いてある商品がちょっとそそるんです、私的に。キッチン用品、旅行グッズ、コスメ、スキンケア、ステーショナリー、アクセ、簡単な電化製品、などなど、店舗内にキュートかつ「お！これあったら便利っぽい！」とつい手に取ってしまうものが目地通し。この写真のような”女性に優しい商品”もキュートに売っててナイス。そしてお手頃ねだんなのも嬉しい！クレカ精算もオッケーだし、店員さんたちがみんな明るくフレンドリーなのもプラス。彼女はとっても可愛い💕ヒバちゃん💕。最初に行った時にいろいろ教えてくれて以来、私と旦那さんの顔を覚えててくれる優しい子です～。

I apologize if this only makes sense to those who know both Japanese & American retail experiences:

MIEVIC is like a

Combination of Plaza (formerly Sonipura) + DAISO + Bath & Body Works + TinyIKEA, divided by 4. 

日本とアメリカを知ってる方にしかわからないかも？ですが、

＜プラザ（昔のソニプラ）＞＋＜DAISO＞＋＜Bath & Body Works＞＋＜すごく小さめのIKEA＞を足して、４で割った感じかな。

According to their website, “MIEVIC” is an abbreviation of “Make It Easy Into Vogue Conception.” Now, one cannot complain and say “wait, should it be MIEIVC?” because there are more important things to complain in this world these days. The first store opened in 2014, and now all over in 20 countries, and MIEVIC is operated by a Chinese retail company, just like MINISO and YOYOSO. What makes MIEVIC different is, it originates from the Nordic design concept and it follows the Nordic design philosophy.  

ウェブサイトによりますと＜MIEVICというのは、“Make It Easy Into Vogue Conception (流行しているコンセプトを簡単に取り入れる）という文章の頭文字をとった店名＞だそうです。2014年に創業、北欧のデザイン哲学を商品に反映させつつ、現在２０カ国に店舗を広げているこのフランチャイズはMINISOやYOYOSOと同様、本社は中国です。ところで「頭文字だったら、MIEIVCじゃない？綴り間違ってるんじゃない？」というツッコミは受け付けないことにします。細かいこと気にしない。

Ahhh… yes, or, ja, Nordic! 

No wonder I was drawn to MIEVIC, I am married to a Nordic, ja!🇸🇪

Also, (this is what I heard) Morocco is said to be the “Scandinavia of Africa” because of its location…? So, sure, it makes sense to have a store like MIEVIC being popular, nej?

北欧のコンセプトだったのねぇ。旦那さんが北欧系だけに、私はこのお店にいとも自然に魅せらていったのね、と後から納得（と言うことにします）。聞くところによりますと、モロッコは、＜アフリカ大陸の北欧＞と呼ばれてるらしく(本当かしら？）なるほど、それならMIEVICが人気になるのも納得（にしときます）。

By the way, I found this interesting series of fragrances. I wonder if it’s called “Local Perfume Experience” or something, but each bottle is named after Moroccan cities like Casablanca, Marrakech, Agdir, etc.. I do like this marketing concept – and it’s only 38 MAD of fun! “Among all these, the best ones are probably Gold or Sahara,” the sales person said. Hmm? Neither of them has city name though…? Anyway, as a proud Rabati, of course, I bought The Scent of Rabat👃 – sweet fragrance with a hint of watermelon-ish smell, and it’s quite refreshing!

ところで、こんな面白いフレグランスを発見。「ご当地香水」とでも言うのかしら、モロッコの都市、カサブランカ、マラケッシュ、アグディールなどの香りが！うふふ、38MADのお楽しみ。もちろん、私はラバト人ですのでこちらを購入。店員ちゃん曰く、「一番のおすすめは、Goldか、Saharaかな。」って、、、両方とも都市じゃないけどいいのかな。ラバトの香り👏は、ちょっと甘くてちょっとクールな、爽快な香りです～！

I am not joking about “Mzah” – Loquats

びわとの出会いは冗談ではありませんでした

I have noticed these small orange-colored fruits at Hanouts (the Moroccan version of convenience stores) and vegetable stores recently. I have also seen them growing on trees on roadsides where I walk. I thought they looked like loquats, but I wasn’t sure. 

最近、こちらのハヌート（モロッコ版·コンビニ）や野菜屋さんで気になっていたオレンジ色の実。よく歩く道端の木にもなってるんですよね。どう見ても「びわ」っぽい。

My image of loquats – from Japan – are “high-class” fruits. Each fruit is often wrapped in thin paper and placed in a beautiful box; it is a luxury fruit that is even presented to the Imperial family; it is a forbidden fruit that I was told by my mother “you may only eat two for a day” (then I would secretly eat another one later – I was the youngest child, the most mischievous one, of course). 

でも、私のイメージのびわは、一つ一つが薄い紙に包まれていて、きれいな箱に入っている、天皇家にも献上される、高級フルーツ。あんまりたくさん食べれない（母に「今日は２個だけね」と言わつつ、隠れてもう１個食べて、後で怒られる末っ子系）フルーツ、というイメージがあります。

IF these orange fruits are indeed loquats…?? It is my duty to try, isn’t it? But, they are placed carelessly, without any special protection or signature boxes, right next to cucumber and carrots. I was worried. I have nothing against cucumbers and carrots. I was just slightly in culture-shock, I guess, but then, I realized, I could probably eat more than two pieces of loquats a day, IF they truly are loquats…

しかし、もし、ここにあるのがびわだったら、、、? これは絶対にトライしなければ。これは私のミッションです。でも、こちらでは、かなり無造作に、ドッカーンとおいてあるものだなぁ、と。きゅうりやにんじんの横に。良い意味でカルチャーショックです。あ、でも、これだったら、２個以上食べても怒られることはなさそうです。

I decided to ask Mr. Mol Hanout (Hanout Master), “what is this?” He gave me a very Mol Hanout answer: “Oh, it’s sweet, it’s delicious, it’s Mzen! Mzen! (good! good)!”

勇気を出して、ハヌートの陽気なお兄ちゃん、Mol Hanut君に「これはなんなのかい？」と聞いてみたところ、「甘いヨォ～。美味しいヨォ～。ムジエン！ムジエン！（グッド!グッド！）」と、商売上手なお答え。

Fine, I just have to try then. I bought some. Sidi (brother) said, “It’s called Mzah; you peel it, and you eat.” Wakha (okay) 👍🏼🙆🏻‍♀️! 

食べてみるしかないか！と思い、恐々、とりあえず購入しました。Sidi曰く、「これはMzahって言うんだ。皮をむいて食べてね。」と。オッケー。Ohh, they look like loquats… やっぱりびわっぽい。。。

Let’s peel it… 皮をむいて。。。

Oh, the seed looks like loquat’s. お！タネもびわのタネじゃないのぉ〜！

It tastes like loquat – it IS loquat! Hooray! 食べたら、やっぱりびわの味！やったー！

As a loquat lover, this was a wonderful surprise. I never thought I would be able to find loquats so easily in Morocco. びわ好きな私には、これはとってもとっても幸せなビックリでした。モロッコでこんなに簡単にびわに出会えるとは、、、

By the way, this fruit is also called “Japanese Plums” here – isn’t it sweet? Plus, Mzah has another meaning in Darija, which is “Joke.” 😂 They were not in nice boxes, but, to me, this Petit Japon is such a treat in springtime in Morocco. Also, for me, who knows the price of loquats in Morocco now, the price of loquats in Japan seemes like a joke. Is it also necessary to overpackage fruits like Japan? That part seems like a joke as well.

ちなみに、Mzahという言葉、Jokeという言葉の意味もあるそうです。冗談のようなフルーツなのでしょうか？またの名をJapanese Plumとも呼ばれて親しまれているモロッコのびわ。丁寧な箱に入ってないけれど、私にとっては、💎宝物💎のような気持ちで出会えたPetit Japon🇯🇵です。こちらのびわのお値段を知ってしまった私にとっては、日本でのびわのお値段が冗談に感じてしまいそうです。あるいは、単なる果物にあんなに過大包装をするという部分もジョークに思えてきたりもします（それで余計、高値になるんでしょうか？）。

Bad Dream with (New) Norwegian Husband

プチ更年期障害と（新しい）ノルウェー人の旦那さん？

Today was a resting day. I had terrible cramps and headaches, and I just couldn’t get up. I practically stayed in bed all day. Come to think of it, it was my first time to spend a whole day inside the room after we moved to Morocco. Well, couldn’t help it. 

プチ更年期の症状なのか、腹痛と頭痛がひどくて起き上がれない日となり、今日は1日ベッドで過ごしちゃいました。モロッコに越してきてからはじめてかな、1日寝てたのは、、、。こう言う日があってもしょうがないですね。

So, my symptoms: I looked them up, and I found out something. 調べてみると、このようなことがかいてありました。

“Perimenopausal hormone fluctuations can worsen your familiar, underlying premenstrual and menstrual symptoms, as high levels of estrogen can cause your body to release prostaglandins, or chemicals that make your uterus contract, which cause pain like heavy cramps.”

「閉経前のホルモンバランスは既に更年期時期に起こりやすい症状を悪化させる傾向があります。例えば、高エストロゲン血症がプロスタグランジンという子宮の収縮を促す化学物質を出しますので、強い生理痛のような痛みを引き起こします。」

🤷🏻‍♀️Oh, fun… そうかいな🤷🏻‍♀️

Also, I haven’t slept well for a while. That’s supposedly another thing about perimenopause. I wake up so often, like every one or two hours, or, I get strange dreams. Usually dreams with nonsense stories. Apparently, I ask my husband questions when I wake up (he is often awake next to me, as he is working with his laptop) and poor Olof has to listen to my silly stuff which doesn’t make sense at all… 

あと、基本よく眠れていないんです。寝ても、1~2時間毎に起きています。そして変なストーリーの夢を見ています。どうも、その夢に関して、隣で起きている旦那さんに質問したりしてるみたいです。ごめんねぇ。

For example, this is the kind of dream I have. Note: my son is an artist, but I am not.  例えばこんな夢。絵で説明します。ところで、絵を描く才能があるのは息子であって、私ではありません。

Olof is working, Tomo is Studying, Ewoks from Star Wars are patrolling us with their guns. – なぜか離れた部屋でそれぞれ作業中の夫婦、スターウォーズのイゥオークが拳銃を持ってパトロール中。
Olof wants to go to the Cave to buy his “Adult Beverages” but Tomo worries that he will be shot by Ewoks. – お酒を買いに行こうとするオオラフを「イウォークに撃たれちゃうから、やめて！」と必死に止めるトモ。
But, his passion for “Adult Beverages” was big. Ewoks await. Tomo cries. – オオラフはお酒屋さんへ出発。イウォークは定位置へ。トモは泣く。The End.

According to my husband, when “Bad Olof” (such as this) appears in my dreams, it is NOT a real Olof. That “Bad Olof” is a “Norwegian Olof.” Because the Real Olof is Swedish. 

ちなみに、夢の中で出てくる＜悪者オオラフ＞は、スウェーデン人ではなく、＜ノルウェー人のオオラフ＞だそうです。

Anyone who is going through Perimenopause or menopause: Do you have bad dreams? Do you experience cramps? Do you have a Norwegian partner who appears to be Swedish in your dream? I hope we are able to survive during this challenging time together (with a good sense of humor and lots of understanding from our partners) 💝💝💝

Love your neighbor – always

ローマ教皇が教えてくれた事

This Easter Monday, I woke up with the sad news of Pope Francis passing. Many years ago, I saw this video, and it brought me tears. I had to watch it again. What touches me deeply is that Pope Francis makes sure that all the audience in the area gets involved for this little Emanuel’s question and lets him hear the answer to console him. There is such a joyful, “let’s all say it together!” atmosphere. It almost looks like you are at the Bon Jovi concert, where you are asked to sing along. You would be singing with John Bon Jovi, would you? See, it’s not just from the Pope’s words to a little Emanuel, or, something like “this is what scripture says…” 

Everyone was involved. All the neighbors of Emanuel helped him. 

みんなが一緒に、エマニュエル君の隣人になって助け合ったんですよね。

イースター明けの月曜日、フランシス・ローマ教皇様が天に召されたとのニュースが入りました。何年か前にみて感動した動画、を再度見て、やはり涙。この中ですごいな、と思うのは、教皇様がエマニュエル君に「お父さん、大丈夫だよ！」と教えてあげる部分を、自ら、教皇というパワフルな立場を使って、ではなく、その場にいる皆さんの声と一緒になって聞かせてあげる、という優しさ。まるで、ボンジョビのコンサートのような感じです。あるいは「聖書にそう書いてあるから」、とか、難しいことではないんですよね。

Power of people: Power of community: I think little Emanuel (who is probably not little anymore) grows up to become someone who can learn to love and trust people in his community, and who can perhaps become a good leader to make his society a better place. Because he learned that the community as a whole can comfort a little boy with love and kindness. 

人の力＆コミュニティの力。小さなエマニュエル君は（もう今は大きくなってるでしょう）きっと、愛情深く誰かを信じれる人に成長できるんじゃないかなぁ。そして、より良いコミュニティを作るリーダー的な存在になってくれるかもしれません。「社会がひとりの小さな子供の心を癒すことができる」という大切な体験をしたのですから。

“Love your Neighbor” – Pope Francis taught us that in this video, in a most simple way. 『隣人を愛しましょう』フランシス・ローマ教皇の教えがこの動画にシンプルに溢れ出ていると思いました。

Please rest in eternal Peace, Papa. Amen.　どうか安らかに。

Easter Morning Thought – “Advanced Society”

イースターの朝に思う「進んだ社会」の定義とは？

What is the definition of “Advanced Society”? Is it Technological Prowess? Is it Economic Prosperity? Is it Richness in Culture? When ChatGPT gives us an answer, when Katy Perry can fly into space, or when we can purchase online, are these the signs of advanced society?

いきなりですが、＜進んだ社会＞の定義とはなんでしょうか？テクノロジーや文化、経済が発展した社会？ChatGPTに聞けばなんでも答えが返ってきて、ケイティ·ペリーが宇宙で１１分間飛べて、オンラインでお買い物できる世界？

I am going to share my personal opinion here. What I value in an advanced society is, simply, “Kindness.” 私的な＜進んだ社会の定義＞は、その社会に『まわりに対する優しさ』があるかどうか、です。

People simply get scared when we see others who are not like ourselves. That’s a normal human defense mechanism. Then, we have a choice: 人間って、自分と同じ人種や文化ではない人にはどうしても防衛体制をとってしまいますよね。これは普通のこと。でもそこで選択枠があるのかな、と。

#1) We could stay being scared, which leads to confusion or misunderstanding. But, without trying to be inclusive or reaching out, we create a big gap. In a terrible scenario, this creates arguments, then, a real worst case, war between countries or cultures. そのまま防衛体制をとり、それがもとに、混乱や誤解も起きてしまったり。理解しあおうとしないので、大きな溝が生じてしまい、闘争がうまれ、最悪の場合、国や文化の間で戦争にまで発展してしまう。

#2) We acknowledge that we are all humans, and we should be open-minded about differences. No need to create arguments; instead, put energy to find a common ground. みんな人間！だから、違って当然、と認知する。その上で共通点を見つけることに集中していく。

I think #2) requires extra work, BUT, with the help of “kindness”, anyone can achieve it – without any ChatGPT assistance or an Amazon Prime purchase. However, giving kindness to others is a POWERFUL decision, a real dedication, and a rewarding lifestyle, which has an even MORE POWERFUL capability to change society. 

２番目を選択するのは、”優しさ”という力をかりれば、誰だって達成できることだと思います。ChatGPTのお世話になることもなく、Amazonプライム会員になる必要もなし。でも、周りの人に親切にすることは、実はとてもパワフルな決断だと！心からの献身があり、やりがいがあり、それがあるから、パワフルに社会を変えていく事ができると思うんですよね。

I live in Morocco as an immigrant. I am not an expat, I am not a diplomat, I simply migrated from another country. I am an alien who cannot speak the local language, nor understand the local culture fully. YET, people here have been welcoming me, trying to help me, and including me with an open heart (By the way, not many people here care about Katy Perry’s space trip – I asked).

私は単に1人の移民としてこのモロッコに住み始めました。駐在員でも外交官でもありません。他の国から「おじゃまさせていただきます🙇🏻‍♀️」と入ってきたのみ、です。現地の言葉もきちんとしゃべれませんし、こちらの文化もしっかり理解できていません。でも、こちらの方達は、私を温かく迎え入れてくれ、助けの手を差し伸べてくれ、心を開いてくれています（ちなみに、こちらでは、ケイティ·ペリーの宇宙旅行の件には興味ない方が多いようです）。

That’s what I call “Advanced Society” – There is a harmony. And, when you are in harmony, people are vibrant. Their smiles are genuine. And, that has a positive, contagious effect, that I would also like to be kind to them & contribute to their society somehow. これが、＜進んだ社会＞なのかなぁ、と。そして、そういった調和ある社会にいる方達は、活気に満ちています。笑顔も本物です。そして、そのような社会にいると、自然と、私もみなさんに優しくなりたい、貢献したい、と思えてきます。

Our son who studies Graphic Art at RISD shared with us these assignments; apparently, he had to “choose a cultural theme (e.g., festival, tradition) and create a series of illustrations incorporating only 5 colors significant to that culture. You should explain their color choices in relation to cultural symbolism.”

RISDでグラフィックアートを勉強中の息子の課題作品。”文化的なテーマ（イベントや伝統など）を選び、その文化にそった意味のある色５つを使ったイラストを制作。そして、その色彩の選択を、文化的な象徴性と照らし合わせて説明する”という内容だったそうです。

He chose the “Sami” culture, as he is part of Sami and we, as a family, cherish its tradition dearly. The harmony of the colors and expressions in these illustrations encouraged me to express what I wrote today. I found the tremendous “kindness” in his art. Tack så mycket, Koji! On this Easter, on this day of hope & renewal, I choose to be kind. 

彼はサーミ文化を選択。彼自身もサーミ族の血が入っており、私達家族もその伝統を大切にしています。このイラストの、色の調和と表現の豊かさから、息子のサーミ文化に対する＜優しさ＞を感じ、今日のブログを書くきっかけとなりました。コウジさん、ありがとう！イースターの朝、私も＜優しさ＞を持ち続けられるよう、希望を忘れず、心の再更新をしていきたいと思います。

Sakura & CousCous & Obento

サクラとクスクスとお弁当

Everyone has their own way of expressing themselves. Some dance, some sing, some paint, some calligraphy, some act, or some say jokes – whether they are funny or not (I love my husband) . I think I often make silly Obento 🍱. When our kids are at school, I made these weird Obento, and this might have caused some unnecessary difficulties or questions for them. Or, they learned to be extra forgiving (I love my kids).

自分を表現する方法、というのはいろいろあると思います。ダンスする人、歌を唄う人、絵を描く人、書道をする人、演劇をする人、ジョークを言って笑わせる人 (愛する旦那さんがこのタイプ）、などなど。私は「変なお弁当を作る人」なのかもしれないのですが、そのせいで、子供達には多大な迷惑をかけてしまったかな、それとも、とても寛大な子供達に育ったかな、とも思います。どちらにしても、最愛の子供達です。

I made these “Themed Bentos” or “Character Bentos” often. However, unfortunately, they don’t often turn out to be the way I want them to be, or stay as they should be in bento boxes (as shown in the photo). Also, you might want to know that I don’t always go for silliness – for example, on Japanese New Year, I make traditional boxed dish, called Osechi.

こんな感じのキャラ弁などをよく作ったのですが、失敗も多々ありました（写真のような）。また、私は真面目な時も多々あります。お正月はおせち、これもある意味、とってもスペシャルなお弁的かな、と。

I wonder if Obento culture is unique to Japan? It is simply a boxed lunch, with all sorts of nutritious food. But, it’s more than that. Ekiben, or Bento at school trips or sports events… The Bento on those occasions is not just food for our bodies, but for our souls; because we pack the memories which come with Bento eating time along with already beautifully packed food, and we carry it, we keep it, and we cherish it for a long time. My silly Obento was never that well-packed or nutritiously ell-balanced (sorry) but I can tell they were unique. 

お弁当カルチャーって日本固有のものなのかしら？駅弁や遠足のお弁当って、なんとなく独特な文化がありますよね。箱詰めになった中にひそむ、味わいとバランスの取れた栄養。それに見た目もよければ最高！お弁当の中には、栄養だけでなく、懐かしさやあたたかさも一緒になってつめられていて、食べ終わったあともその気持ちはずっと残っているように感じます。ところで私の変なお弁当達は、決して美味しいものだけではなかったかな、と反省。でも、話題性はあったかな。

In Morocco, Friday is Couscous Day! and you can find CousCous signs all over town at cafés and restaurants. Also, pumpkins, which are essential for couscous, become the main stage character in the vegetable section from Thursday! No, you don’t need to buy a whole pumpkin, you can ask Mul Hanut (store owner) how much you want and take home your desired amount. I kind of think the couscous you eat at restaurants is a bit like a Moroccan version of Obento. The balance of meat and vegetables is just right, it looks beautiful, well-packed, and it’s a perfect dish that comes together on one plate (At home, it is more likely served on a larger plate and everyone eats it in a circle). モロッコでは、金曜日が＜クスクスの日＞だそうで、街中のレストランやカフェでも大々的にサインが出ます。そして、木曜日くらいから、クスクスにはかかせない”カボチャ”が野菜売り場にドッカーンと主役になりまして、いえいえ、一つ丸ごと買う必要はないみたいです。’このくらいくださいな’でOK。レストランで食べるクスクスって、ちょっと＜モロッコ版のお弁当＞みたいだなぁ、って思います。お肉とお野菜のバランスもいいし、見た目もきれいで、ひと皿でしっかりまとまった完璧ディッシュ。ご家庭ではもーっと大皿に盛って、みんなでわいわい輪になって食べる、って感じのようです。クスクスや、モロッコの食べ物についてもっと知りたい方は、ぜひこちらに目を通されてくださいな（英語のみ）！

About this time of the year, I hear how beautiful Sakura is from my family and friends in Japan. Then, I start missing Japan more. Sakura does that to me, deemaa (always). So, I decided to make “Japanese Cherry Blossom (Hanami) Bento” – with whatever I can use at home. See, we still haven’t received our moving boxes, so, not much Japanese tableware… oh well. Please excuse me for having Natto in the Obento. I made it for the first time by myself (and lots of lots of it, so I have to eat it).

この季節、日本の家族や友人たちの「桜便り」を耳に＆目にすると、やはり日本が恋しくなります。いろいろな引越し荷物が船便で届いて来ていない最中、和食器もまだあまり手元にないのですが、なんとなく「日本のお花見気分弁当」を作りたくなりました。お弁当の中に納豆、が入っているのはご愛嬌。はじめて自分で作ってみたので（こちらでは買えないので）、つい、、、（いっぱいできちゃったんです）。

I wonder if there are cherry trees in Morocco where I could go do Hanami? So many beautiful gardens and parks here in Rabat, I bet I could find cherry trees somewhere? It’s been challenging days, to be honest with Carte de Séjour stuff… I could use some Sakura-Fix!

モロッコにも、桜並木とかあるのかしら？公園や庭がいっぱい、な国だから、きっとどこかにありそうな、、、探してみよう！在留資格ゲットのために、かなりあたふたと心落ち着かない日々だからこそ、ゆっくりお花見でもしたいなぁと思う今日この頃です。

Cheers! at Snack Sahbi “Where Everybody Knows Your Name”

Snack Sahbi: ラバトでみつけたサードプレイス

Have you watched an American TV show, “Cheers”? I didn’t, but I think it’s about a group of friends who always go to the same bar, get beer 🍻, and tell not-so-funny American jokes, and live happily ever after? I could be wrong. But what I know is, its theme song is so iconic that everyone seems to know, including me. It’s called “Where Everybody Knows Your Name.” 

アメリカの古いTVドラマで、Cheersというのがありましたが、ご存じですか？私は内容はよくわからないのですが（確か、顔馴染みさん達がバーで飲んでいて、ひっちゃかめっちゃか、あんまり面白くないアメリカンジョークを言って終わる、みたいな？違うかな）その主題歌は特に有名、今でも耳にします。「みんなが君の名前を知ってる場所」という微笑ましいタイトル。

I guess this is a good example of the “Third Place” concept; a place where you feel relaxed besides your home (a place #1) , or your workplace/school (a place #2). You are there to be yourself, with people who know your name and your personality. This concept was apparently first proposed by an American sociologist, Dr. Oldenburg in 1989. Some find this “third place” in a café, at a gym, or, maybe, at a mosque or at a church. Do you have your third place? No, you don’t need to drink beer, or say bad jokes. Btw, I learnt that there is a Darija word for bad jokes – “Nukta 7amed” – literally means, “sour (like lemon 🍋) joke”, which my translator DNA really would like to call it as “Oyaji-gyagu” in Japanese. 😆😆😆 My husband is very good at this kind of jokes; 7amed bzaaf (bzaaf = a lot), in fact.

つまり、一番に心が落ち着く家、２番目に落ち着く会社／学校、の次に属する＜サードプレイス「第３の場所」＞的な空間の事を歌っているのかな、と思います。このサードプレイス構想を最初に提唱したのは、アメリカの社会学者オルデンバーグ氏、1989年のことだそう。人によってはそれがお気に入りのカフェだったり、通ってるジムだったり、あるいはモスクや教会など、なのかしら。みなさんのサードプレイスはどこでしょうか。別にバーでビール飲んでジョーク言わなくていいんですよね。ちなみに、ダリジャ語でも「親父ギャグ」的な単語があるようでして、“Nukta 7amed” :ヌクタが「冗談」、ハーメッドが「酸っぱい＆レモン🍋」旦那さんの得意分野でもあります。（笑）

When I lived in Seattle, where Starbucks headquarters is located, I often accompanied delegations on company visits related to the “Third Place” concept and café cultures in the Pacific Northwest as an interpreter. But, since moving to Rabat, I haven’t been to Starbucks at all. Nor, any posh cafes, actually. Yes, there are many bougie cafés around here, but my husband and I usually end up having Kahuwa nousnous (coffee & milk, half/half) at more locally recommended ones. Among them, Snack Sahbi has become MY third place! 

シアトル生活中は、スタバの本拠地だっただけに、通訳としてもよくこの”サードプレイス”関係の企業訪問の方達のお供もしましたが、ラバトに越してきて以来、スタバに行ったことは一度もなく（笑）。オシャレ系カフェも多々あるのですが、なんとなく足を運んでしまうのはこちらの友人に教えてもらう穴場系だったりします。そんな中、私のサードプレイスになりつつあるのが、ここ、Snack Sahbiさん！

Not only is it located just a 5-minute walk from our apartment, but it’s also open from 7am to 11pm! The biggest attraction? Their juice! And LOTS of LOTS of selections! I am always happy and get excited to sit down and think “Hmm, which one should I choose aujourd’hui…?”

アパートから歩いて３分！というすんばらしい場所にあるだけでなく、朝７時から夜１１時までやってくれちゃう嬉しさ。そして、何と言っても、フレッシュなジュースの各種！毎回、ここのジュース「今日はどれにしようかなぁぁぁ」と悩むのが嬉しくて楽しくて。

Now that we’ve been going there a lot of times, the staff have started to recognize us 🙂 Sahbi means “friend” in Darija – and to me, they are becoming my friends. While sitting facing the Avenue de France, watching the trams go by, and speaking in Japanese and in questionable French, and in even more questionable Darija with my husband and locals… and, a cat or two join our conversation, asking if we have anything for them to munch. Even when I am feeling a bit down, Bogoss (handsome) Imad-kun and other staff’s cheerful hospitality and delicious juice can cheer me up. Truly, Sahbi is becoming my “Third Place.” 

そして、何度も行くようになったので、顔も覚えてくれるようになったお兄さん達。Sahbiとは、ダリジャ語で「お友達」という意味なのですが、まさに、私にとってはお友達です、はい。Avenue de Franceの道に面して座り、行き来するトラムを眺めながら、日本語や、怪しいフランス語や、もっと怪しいダリジャ語で旦那さんやローカルさん達と話したりジュースを飲んでいると、猫しゃんが「何かくれませんかねぇ」とやってきたり。ちょっと落ち込むことがあっても、ここの明るくてイケメンなお兄ちゃん達や美味しいジュースで元気＆ホッとする時間です。

By the way, when you think of Moroccan food, I don’t think many of you would think of Sphagetti Bolognaise. 🍝 I didn’t think so either, BUT, now, I think of it as one of my comfort foods in Morocco. Here is why: 1) It tastes like Spaghetti Bolognaise, which my mother makes (and she is Japanese, never lived outside of Japan), 2) It’s a menu item you can find frequently, 3) No matter how I look at it & wherever I order it, Spaghetti Bolognaise in morocco so far tastes just like my mother’s, and I started to wonder if she was secretly Moroccan. It’s really a mystery and unexpected coincidence, that it even brings me tears – so nostalgic & so yummy. Bien sûr, Snack Sahbi also has it on their menu for 38MAD. I am crying. 

突然ですが、モロッコ料理と聞いて、「ミートソース·スパゲティ🍝」を想像する方はいらっしゃらないかと思いますが、私的にはこれが＜モロッコの意外なソールフード＞として存在してきております。なぜかというと、1)母の作るミートソースの味がする、2)メニューで頻繁にみかける、3)どう考えても、母の味がする、からです。私の母が実はモロッコ人だったのではないかしら？と思うくらい、どのお店で食べても懐かしい「ママの味」なのです。不思議すぎて、嬉しくて、涙が出るほどです。もちろん、Sahbiさんも38MADでメニューにのっております。最高です。🙏

From petit-déjeuner (breakfast) to the taste of my mom, Sahbi is definitely becoming my Third Place 🎼“Where Everybody Knows Your (my) Name”🎶 Cheers! ( with juice🥤)

朝ご飯から母の味まで、トータルで私の心をホッとさせてれる、Snack Sahbi。これからもガンガン足を運んでしまうと思います。
